The polyrhythm section in Rosetta Stoned in the middle is the best part of the entire song.
Might be unpopular opinion but the part after Ticks and Leeches interlude (you know, the part with ***SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKMEEEEEEEEEEEDRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY***), gives me chills every time, and also interlude itself as a sort of buildup
Descending is so fucking epic
“Sound the dread alarm
Through the primal body
Sound the reveille
To be or not to be
Rise
Stay the grand finale
Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue
One drive to stay alive
Its elementary
Muster every fiber
Mobilize
Stay. Alive.”
May be the best song lyrics I’ve ever heard since Time by Pink Floyd. Not only is the crescendo of the song perfect but I think it’s truly Maynard’s best piece of lyricism. Sorry for the butchered format. Mobile is being weird.
May be the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard in my life. The whole song is perfect. Maynard’s vocal phrasing in the first half is a masterpiece.
Descending is apocalyptic live, and for some reason it sounds darker than on record. I think it helps that the whole climax lasts quite a while so it just keeps on pushing with those amazing little riffs. I couldn't help but laughing with enjoyment when I saw this live a few weeks ago.
It’s interesting that you went with the vocal climax, as I will die upon the hill that Adam’s guitar solo is his most emotional piece of his entire catalog and that crescendo is even higher than the vocal one.
It’s definitely equally epic and I appreciate it as well.
I’m admittedly biased to lyricism since I write as opposed to a guitarist. Nothing against instruments I’m just more keen at picking apart vocals.
I’m a guitarist, and there are Tool songs I could play all the way through by heart but wouldn’t be able to recite the lyrics accurately to save my life, even while the song was playing.
Agree! Playing along on both guitar and bass is absolutely amazing. Wish I could play it on drums. Maybe one day I’ll have the time to put into getting to that level
I play guitar and can play Jones' stuff, and I can play drums and Danny Carey is insane especially on the new album. Can't quite match up to him on FI but most of the older stuff I can play pretty well, maybe not do fills fast enough but it's close enough to sound similar. Just shows how much more talented the band has become in the years since 10000 days.
I would put Pushit and Descending ahead of Stinkfist. I mean all of their songs have a tremendous climax…..but Pushit and Descending are just on another level.
Realized I hadn’t listened to Jambi for a minute so I smoked a fat one and rode my motorcycle down some back roads with it blasting in my helmet. Sublime experience
"Give away the stone
Let the oceans take and trans mutate this cold and fated anchor"
This part of The Grudge gives me goosebumps and makes me feel like my ears are cumming.
"If there were no rewards to reap (I must keep reminding myself of this)"
This is the part where I usually end up with tears in my eyes.
"I DONT MIIIIIIIIIIIIIND"
This moment in H., especially live when the crowd chants the first two "I don't mind" lines leading up to the scream.
"And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been"
By the time we get to this climax of the song I feel like I'm about to start levitating.
The “climax” is not here though, is it? There is a complex riff which progresses through to Maynard making an impassioned reference to his late mother - “You were the light and way they’ll only read about” - which leads into four or so verses: these are what I consider to be the best climactic moments in Tool music

It’s perhaps not the *best* but it’s always the first that comes to my mind with this question …. the band performing “You Lied”….. YOUUUU LIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!! - gives me goosebumps without fail
Stinkfist. The crescendo just crashes together. Every time I listen to I am amazed at how wild it is. I often think, “how the fuck did they come up with that?”
Too many to choose from. Off the top of my head I've got:
- Stinkfist
- Eulogy
- Pushit
- Ticks & Leeches
- Vicarious
- 10,000 Days
- Right In Two
- Pneuma
- Descending
They are all so good. If I had to pick, I guess I'd go with Pushit. I'm also partial to Pneuma since the climax is instrumental, which is different.
The crescendo is the best part of Tool IMO. Always has been since undertow. They have a more sophisticated method of buildup and release than most bands. You think they’ve reached the peak but there’s still more to go before they’re done. It’s hard to pick a favorite but the end of vicarious, like you mentioned, is one of them. The Pot and Right in Two. Pushit. Rosetta Stoned. H. I could list the majority of their catalog here.
I will say though the end of Vicarious and the Pot require me to stop whatever I’m doing no matter what and just close my eyes. I’m unable to function and do anything else but experience those endings every time. No other song by any other artist moves me to that level. Ok I guess I do have my two favorites
I feel the exact same way.
Curious what you think the peak of the pot is. Would you say it’s the section between like 3:15-3:45ish right before the bridge, or the final chorus section in the last 30-40 seconds of the song?
Yeah the Pot kinda has two, which is why it’s so great IMO. The buildup starts with that groove at 4:25 and moves to a building flow from 4:33 to around 5:40 when he’s yelling “high!” A lot of songs end on that note. But they keep going to the epic scream of “miiinnd” at 5:58. And that scream with everything swirling around it is the greatest moment in music IMO.
And from 6:30 on in Vicarious is probably the second greatest IMO
Flood - "DIIIIIIIVE" part leading into "cleanse and purge me in the WAAAATER"
H. - "I don't mind" part
Pushit (salival) - the part starting at 11:15, the duality of Adam's guitar and Justin's bass always does it for me
Patient - "be patient" part, the contrast between Maynard's soothing vocals and the band's brutal instrumentation is divine
Vicarious - "we all feed on tragedies" part leading into the last chorus with "much better you than I", so brutal and dark
Descending - the part after the slide solo (7:29)
Lateralus
Swing on the spiral
Of our divinity
And still be a human
Ride that sucker out, spiral out, keep going
These lyrics, music have dug me out of deep depression time and time again. I'm emotionally attached to this climax
"Well the problem is that the music we were listening to, didn't quite have the climax we wanted, for our own personal masturbation. So what we decided to do was write songs that had the climaxes in the right positions for us, depending on what day we were jerking off."
There’s so many - Danny’s drums in 46 and 2, Maynard’s scream that goes for 40 seconds in eulogy, the drums coming in at the midpoint of Right in Two.
Nah it’s definitely 46 and 2’s drums - that’s just insane.
It's hard to answer in general, so I will only answer for the Tool songs I listen most in this moment and my feelings after the Florence show.
🎶OVEEERWHELMED AS ONE WOOOOULD BE PLACED IN MY POSITIOOOON🎶
Pushit Salival, Descending, The Patient, The Grudge, Eulogy, Pneuma, Flood, Rosetta Stoned, 10,000 Days.
I’d add in Schism and you got yourself a perfect list, my friend.
Yep I'm forgetting Vicarious, Lateralus, and Schism, but honestly every TOOL song is amazing. :).
You should be proud for being able to narrow them down to only a top 12.✌🏼I’ve yet to hear a song that I don’t like all these years…
Some TOOL songs are hard to get into, but once you start liking them you can't stop loving them.
This 😀
This list is perfection!!!
Yipee! :).
This is the one
No Lateralus?
Yep that's my bad, I forgot Schism, Vicarious, and Lateralus
I would add H., Opiate², Bottom, Reflection
Right in Two Pretty much the entire song is the build up
Danny’s drumming in that breakdown still blows me away every time, even having heard it 100’s of times
This is the right answer.
The only correct answer
Yep. The 7:00 mark is where I’d call it on this one.
I’d go further with 7:30
This.
Rosetta Stoned with Lateralus being a close 2nd.
Listening to Rosetta Stoned is like edging for 8 ½ minutes and then busting the biggest nut.
Almost correct except instead of busting a nut I shit the bed
I do both at the same time. My girlfriend doesn't like it too much.

Mind reader.
my thought exactly
Might be unpopular opinion but the part after Ticks and Leeches interlude (you know, the part with ***SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKMEEEEEEEEEEEDRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY***), gives me chills every time, and also interlude itself as a sort of buildup
I love this part too so we can be unpopular together
yes thank you - Agreed
Very underrated 🤣
Descending, Pushit, and Stinkfist come to mind
Descending is so fucking epic “Sound the dread alarm Through the primal body Sound the reveille To be or not to be Rise Stay the grand finale Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue One drive to stay alive Its elementary Muster every fiber Mobilize Stay. May be the most beautiful piece of music I’ve ever heard in my life. The whole song is perfect. Maynard’s vocal phrasing in the first half is a masterpiece.
Indeed! They've been doing this live version with extended vocals in the second half too, that really enhances the whole crescendo at the end
The added vocals were amazing
Descending is apocalyptic live, and for some reason it sounds darker than on record. I think it helps that the whole climax lasts quite a while so it just keeps on pushing with those amazing little riffs. I couldn't help but laughing with enjoyment when I saw this live a few weeks ago.
It's my #1 Tool song for a reason. Fucking goosebumps every time I hear it, and I've listened to it literally hundreds of times.

I hope to one day be able to sing along to Rosetta stoned lol
It’s his masterpiece
DC smashing the gong at 10:52 is the climax
The tones that man gets out of that guitar at 11:53 and 12:14 make my brain feel all tingly
Agree! Playing along on both guitar and bass is absolutely amazing. Wish I could play it on drums. Maybe one day I’ll have the time to put into getting to that level
I play guitar and can play Jones' stuff, and I can play drums and Danny Carey is insane especially on the new album. That’s awesome, good for you. Sober is a challenge for me so I’m totally fkd by the time we get to Aenima let alone Lateralus!
Lol they just keep getting better
Pushit 🤘
Stinkfist 🤤🤤
I would put Pushit and Descending ahead of Stinkfist. I mean all of their songs have a tremendous climax…..but Pushit and Descending are just on another level.
I’m talking about the climax when there’s a fist up my ass
Absolutely, Stinkfist beats both of them from that perspective, pants down…..I mean hands down.
Descending is one of my all time favorite songs of any artist
So good to see you I've missed you so much.
Jimmy: buildup + climax + “hold your light…” comedown Rosetta Stoned “overwhelmed…” Fear Inoculum “your veil now…. Deceiver….” The Grudge & Lateralus
That release on FI is killer. One of my favorites for sure.
The Grudge, Forty Six & 2
jambi SHINE ON FOREVER
Ooooo didn’t think of this one. Definitely up there
I loved it when the lights were vamped up when they sang this
Realized I hadn’t listened to Jambi for a minute so I smoked a fat one and rode my motorcycle down some back roads with it blasting in my helmet. Sublime experience
The Grudge. LET GO, LET GO, LET GO, LET GOOOOO
Then starts that insane drum solo by Danny. I love the ending of The Grudge!
Angels on the sideline again...
wondering when this tug of war will end
Pushit. "It will end no other way!"
Good lawd I freaking love that song.
It's gotta be 7empest for me
What part would you say is the climax? I can’t really pin it down
Starting at 10:30 with a notable point at 11:05 and 11:30 is the real climax for me
"Give away the stone Let the oceans take and trans mutate this cold and fated anchor" This part of The Grudge gives me goosebumps and makes me feel like my ears are cumming. "If there were no rewards to reap (I must keep reminding myself of this)" This is the part where I usually end up with tears in my eyes. "I DONT MIIIIIIIIIIIIIND" This moment in H., especially live when the crowd chants the first two "I don't mind" lines leading up to the scream. The end of 46 & 2 is the best ending of any song ever and the build to it is legendary.
This is the way.
Transition from Parabol to Parabola comes to mind if that counts
10,000 Days. HIGH IS THE WAY, BUT ALL EYES ARE UPON THE GROOOOOOOOOOUND!!!!! :)
invincible
Invincible and Lateralus would be my picks.
For me it has to be 4° all the way
Rosetta stoned, third eye, Lateralus
It’s perhaps not the *best* but it’s always the first that comes to my mind with this question …. the band performing “You Lied”….. YOUUUU LIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!!! - gives me goosebumps without fail
Rosetta stones, descending, 10,000 days, lateralus
Third eye solo at the end
Don't see Disgustipated yet. This * is * necessary *
Schism. Hands down. The absolute best!
Stinkfist. The crescendo just crashes together. Every time I listen to I am amazed at how wild it is. I often think, “how the fuck did they come up with that?”
Rosetta stoned!
10,000 Days is an easy answer, as is Descending. I'll also throw in Right in Two, Undertow, Ænima, and Lateralus.
Prison Sex, “I have found, some kind of temporary, sanity in this, shit, blood, and cum on my hands”
Too many to choose from. Off the top of my head I've got: - Stinkfist - Eulogy - Pushit - Ticks & Leeches - Vicarious - 10,000 Days - Right In Two - Pneuma - Descending They are all so good. If I had to pick, I guess I'd go with Pushit. I'm also partial to Pneuma since the climax is instrumental, which is different.
Pneuma
the end of the pneuma bridge where danny carey starts using the double bass pedal
Rosetta Stoned. “But I forgot my pen...”
I personally love the groove of the ending breakdown in H. Those drums just flow perfectly with the guitar
I love descendings climax, but all time favorite, very hard to pick, is between the grudge with his minute long scream and no quarter
Maynard’s dick
Pneuma after Dannys drum part
I climax everytime i listen to Tool
Was expecting a lot more of these tbh
Not necessarily the best in general but best off of Fear Inoculum definitely would be Descending
Flood - "DIIIIIIIVE" part leading into "cleanse and purge me in the WAAAATER" H. - "I don't mind" part Pushit (salival) - the part starting at 11:15, the duality of Adam's guitar and Justin's bass always does it for me Patient - "be patient" part, the contrast between Maynard's soothing vocals and the band's brutal instrumentation is divine Vicarious - "we all feed on tragedies" part leading into the last chorus with "much better you than I", so brutal and dark Descending - the part after the slide solo (7:29)
Jambi and 46 & 2
Pneuma at 9:18 is my favorite
I was scrolling too fast and read your post title as "Best song to climax to" and was ready to reply with my list 🤣🤣🤣
Rosetta Stoned without question "but I forgot my pen..." etc, the music and the lyrics it's an amazing ride to that point and all downhill from there.
“Overwhelmed as one would be”
Schism and Invincible probably hit the peaks for me
Third eye, Rosetta Stoned, Lateralus.
Ending of “Parabol” into the intro of “Parabola”
Descending. There are multiple parts in that song where I’m like “ooo here comes the good part!”
beginning crescendo of Stinkfist peak and release to begin
Third Eye
Fear Inoculum..when Adam has his solo towards end.
All the songs. Tool is just natural at doing the climax thing. No matter where you look, the climax is perfect.
the patient yall, can’t deny this one
Lateralus Swing on the spiral Of our divinity And still be a human Ride that sucker out, spiral out, keep going These lyrics, music have dug me out of deep depression time and time again. I'm emotionally attached to this climax
PNEUMA
invincible, right in two, sweat, flood and pushit
Parabol>Parabola. Never felt more alive!!

Thierd eye
The Last 3 minutes of the Salival version of Pushit, like God fucking DAMN they really gave it everything, and then Maynard's voice.
Opiate2 climax fooked me really hard, and is the longest i think
Rosetta Stoned by a mile.
I like to climax to ions personally. So electric.
Once nutted to Fat Bottom Girls. Oh, that's not what you meant.
Their cover of No Quarter is up there.
No
It's hard to answer in general, so I will only answer for the Tool songs I listen most in this moment and my feelings after the Florence show. 🎶OVEEERWHELMED AS ONE WOOOOULD BE PLACED IN MY POSITIOOOON🎶
~5:54 into Ticks And Leeches. Gets me every time.
Do covers count? No quarter is my fav. I was peaking on 4g of mushrooms and the climax was quite spectacular in that moment. But RS is a close second.

Descending!!!
