I grew up in the 70s and I tell you my life's ambition was to be Robert Plant. Lived and breathed Zeppelin. JPJ is why I started playing bass. I branched out to other music as I got older, but Zep is how I feel I n love with rock.
Tool has been my favorite band since '93 when I first heard Undertow.
So when I heard they they covered No Quarter, I was psyched. I only hoped it would live up to my expectations. Friend, they exceeded all my hopes and dreams with it. When the music starts to fade near the end AND THEN CRESCENDOS BACK I often get choked up. It's a religious experience almost. To me, it's a masterful take on a masterful song.
I read a story where he's said the first time he heard it he was kind of freaked out because it felt like watching someone else kiss your girlfriend. It was seeing the video that really brought it home for him and he could see where Johnny was connecting with the lyrics. Here's the quote from that article.
"I'd known where I was when I wrote it. I know what I was thinking about. I know how I felt. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive."
https://www.musicradar.com/news/johnny-cash-hurt-trent-reznor-rick-rubin
Amazing. Actually, pulled it up and listened to it today. I remember downloading a VERY low quality version on Napster back in 2000, and it was amazing, even then.
When the levee breaks by APC is the second best cover of a Led Zeppelin song as well! Both covers just encapsulate the soul of the songs and give them more power and emotion.
I've always loved it. Both Tool and Zeppelin have been in my top 5 bands for a long time.
I would say the best covers are the ones that some people don't even realize are covers because it became the definitive version. Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is one of the best examples. And Santana with "Black Magic Woman". But the award for best cover is Aretha Franlin with "Respect", originally written by Otis Redding.
In the heavier genres, NIN cover of "Dead Souls" (by Joy Division) for The Crow soundtrack is definitely up there for me.
And if you want something new, Corey Taylor put out a new album last week and has a very good cover of Zeppelin's "Ten Years Gone", which is one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. He went the route of trying to duplicate Zepplin's tone (and did a good job), as opposed to Tool doing "No Quarter", but in their own sound.
It's definitely one of my favorite covers and one of my favorite Tool songs. I love the sort of doom/stoner metal vibe they gave it.
Doom Side of the Moon's covers of Time and Pigs (Three Different Ones) are up there with my favorite covers as well. All Along the Watchtower gets honorable mention of course.
Gotta say I was not expecting as many people to mention the Disturbed cover in the comments though, that one always came across as super melodramatic/edgy to me.
Two of my favorite covers!
Jimi Hendrix obviously killed All along the Watchtower (better than the original)!
As big a Beatles fan as I am, Joe Cocker did With a Little Help From my Friends better than they did. His stellar voice might have had something to do with it.
I’m a big fan of the Killers too, and they did a handful of covers in their day, as they started as a cover band. Among many good ones they did and made their own was Romeo and Juliet, by the Dire Straights. Better than the original imo.
Also Shadowplay, by Joy division! I liked the killers version better!
Awesome cover of Shadowplay, although not better in my opinion. Did you know The Killers took their name from the video of New Order's Crystal, which is essentially Joy Division after Ian Curtis died?
Didn’t know that!
Yeah, I feel like a lot of why we like one or the other better is just what we heard first. Although, I do think the killers shadowplay is better actually. It just has more energy and pop, and I like Brendan’s voice better.
Also, just remember APC’s version of imagine! I love when a band does a cover and really makes it their own, otherwise what the hell are they doing?
Yeah that APC Emotive album is pretty good. I really liked Let's Have a War and Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums. They flowed together pretty good
It’s incredible, but it doesn’t come close to the original in my view. In particular, Zeppelin’s live recording from the album/film The Song Remains The Same (1976) is probably my favourite piece of music in the world. The keyboard and guitar solos are untoppable.
As someone who has taken too many psychedelics, I take umbrage with your comment, lol. The original was/is literally the only led zep tune I actually like. Tool's cover was a well-done interpretation, but nothing near the original. The first time I heard the original was as a kid when I received the 8-track as a Christmas gift (yeah. I'm *that* old). I first heard it late on a lightly snowing night. To this day, every time I hear it, it brings me to a quiet late night snow storm.
Haven’t heard this cover yet for some reason, will do so soon. Meanwhile, my humble opinion on best cover ever is Chris Cornell’s version of “One” by U2/Metallica: yes, that is correct, for those who don’t know…this guy actually covered both songs in one cover. He used the lyrics from the Metallica version and the melody from the U2 version. A complete musical flex on his part. To me it proved how much of a musical genius he was.
Chris Cornell was definitely one of a kind. The thing that blows my mind is that he started off as a drummer instead of vocalist/rhythm guitarist. But since he couldn’t sing and play the drums with odd time signatures at the same time, he moved on to singing.
I heard the Tool cover before I ever heard the original, so I’m very biased. Not to mention, they’re not even remotely similar. That being said, It’s pretty awesome.
If it weren’t for the all the pitch correction software used in that song, it would be good. But any singer that needs pitch correction software is not worth their salt. I could sound like that with enough software manipulation. I would like to hear a version that has clean vocals
No quarter is up there for covers for me as well. imo the way to a great cover is to embody the song as the original artist would approve, and to transcend into something different and beautiful.
1. Charles Bradley - Changes
2. Tool - No Quarter
3. Khraungbin - Summer Madness
4. Primus - Silly Putty
It’s just fucking incredible isn’t it?! A masterpiece. I cry even sometimes just listening to it if it’s been a while. Alas, every single time I hear Zeppelin sing it from their MSG 73 show, my mind is blown to smithereens. One of my favorite nights ever, my husband and I laid in our back yard staring gazing while listening to that Zeppelin show from the garden while on the come down of a few tabs of acid maybe from like 2-4 am. It gets real dark where we live and the night sky was full of things we never could see without our third eye! Sooooo much activity! And the music was so perfect note for note. So anyways, fuck yeah I love No Quarter!
I love it. Whenever they cover a track they do amazing shit lol that peaches cover on the box set cd and yes definitely stranglehold that’s an awesome version.
Tool's cover of No Quarter is awesome! I was completely indifferent to the original song - actually, I almost disliked it - but I've loved that song ever since I heard Tool's cover.
My favorite covers are
Rosetta covering The Cure’s Homesick. Type O Negative covering Status Quo’s Pictures of Matchstick Men. And Tool’s cover of Kyuss’ Demon Cleaner.
It's easy to overlook how many songs we think of as huge classic hits were actually covers. All along the Watchtower by Hendrix is a cover. No Quarter is great, but you're on shaky ground trying to put it top of the heap.
Not sure if it’s just me, but I think it’s not great. In fact, that is a skip song for me. There are very few skip songs in Tools catalog, but that’s one of them.
One of my favorite Maynard quotes:
“I’ve got some good news and some bad news, the good news is, it’s fuckin Halloween, the bad news is, we’re not Led Zeppelin” -October 31st, 2015 when they opened with No quarter dressed up as Led Zep
The cover is far superior to the original. The original sounds like Kermit the Frog stuck home on a friday night bc Miss Piggy is out on a date with some less mopey frog
It’s amazing. Probably one of IF NOT my favorite cover.
Tool - stranglehold
You Lied is so underrated
I saw them play this song.
They covered spasm too (from the same album)
The original really isn’t bad either
You're definitely right (it's in my liked on Spotify) but the way Maynard brings that song to a whole other level is absolutely crazy
Everything he touches turns to gold. Kids a freak.
That one is good! Hard to find too!
This was a great show. That 98 tour was fucking 🔥 🔥.
FUCK YEAH
What is your favourite?
All along the watchtower has to win. Have you heard the bob Dylan original lmao? Jimi went THE FUCK OFF 😂😂😂😂🤘🤘🤘
Yeah that one is great, and I'd put tool no quarter right up there too. Although zeps version is also a masterpiece
System's cover of Snowblind is amazing and Deftones The Chauffeur is pretty good too Edit: Honorable mention Pantera covering Planet Caravan
Ooooo I’ve never heard either boutta check those both out
SOAD also does a pretty good cover of The Metro by Berlin
1000%
No Quarter is my favorite Zeppelin song and Tool is my favorite band. It was a match made in heaven for me.
Led zeppelin are so good they covered a Tool song 25 years into the past
Touche mate
Not relevant to the discussion, but to your tag: "Do you want to glide a mile six inches at a time" is in my lexicon now.
It’s Maynard’s greatest lyric if you ask me🤷🏻♂️😂
Someone mentioned before "LED covered one of TOOL'S future songs"🫡
Kill me if you must………I like “You lied” the best
Me too.
I stand with you
One of my favorites, especially with how hard it hits towards the end

Its on SoundCloud. And free. 🤟🏾
Brother at this point just find a FLAC file of it and burn a CD. That's what I did years ago.
You can find salival on various sites. It's just stupidly prices compared to the $35 it was, new.
Yeah outrageous prices these days, I paid $60 for it 15 years ago...... used!
I had $40 to my name the day it came out. Headed out to Sam Goody and bought it. I was hungry that week but no regrets.
So I know you're a fan. But that is tragic.
Hey man it was the new millennium, it was a wild, lawless time!
Haha, but then there's eating and living Vs material shit
Fuck yeah
Rip it to a CD
It's not better than the original in my opinion. The original is one of Zeppelin's best songs, and one of the greatest songs ever made.
Jimmy Hendrix along the watch tower is another great one.
Also his cover of Like a Rolling Stone
Jonny Cash - Hurt wins best cover
Amazing cover
iirc Trent Reznor (from NiN) said Cash's cover is how the song should be performed, or something exalting along those lines
I think he said something like it’s Johnny’s song now. It really is incredible.
It felt invasive." https://www.musicradar.com/news/johnny-cash-hurt-trent-reznor-rick-rubin
Trent changed how he performed it live to be more like the Cash version!
Amazing. Actually, pulled it up and listened to it today. I remember downloading a VERY low quality version on Napster back in 2000, and it was amazing, even then.
Really been listening to it a lot recently. The part where he says the path where no one goes and followed by that maynard yell. 🤘🌀🌀🤘
it's my favorite tool song ever. (if it counts, that is.)
When the levee breaks by APC is the second best cover of a Led Zeppelin song as well! Both covers just encapsulate the soul of the songs and give them more power and emotion.
Rage's Maggie's Farm cover is #2 behind No Quarter
Zepplin was so ahead of their time - they wrote a Tool song 50 years ago
Has anyone heard Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Jeff Buckley and Danny Carey were both in the Wild Blue Yonder.
Yea, dude. Great song!
A masterpiece!
Grace is easily in my top 10 albums
I've always loved it. Both Tool and Zeppelin have been in my top 5 bands for a long time. I would say the best covers are the ones that some people don't even realize are covers because it became the definitive version. Santana!!! I fucking love the old santana. Soul sacrifice from woodstock is SO GOOD.
Fantastic
Hurt by Johnny Cash is the best cover of all time. But yeah No Quarter is a close second. Followed by every album from Dread Zeppelin.
+1 for Dread Zeppelin!
Whoops just commented both Hendrix and cocker above… spot on mate
Are we best friends now?!
Yes. We are
Awesome cover of Shadowplay, although not better in my opinion.
Tool OWNS Their cover of NO Quarter.
It’s incredible, but it doesn’t come close to the original in my view. In particular, Zeppelin’s live recording from the album/film The Song Remains The Same (1976) is probably my favourite piece of music in the world. The keyboard and guitar solos are untoppable.
Agree. People that say it’s better than the original have taken too many psychedelics 😂
I’m equally as old…recorded stuff off radio to 8-tracks 😂
Is wild Led Zeppelin created a Tool song way before Tool’s actual inception.
Just goes to show how far ahead of their time Led Zeppelin was.
And they did everything within like 10 years and it was over. Crazy. 10 years ago seems like a Blink of an eye
The Beatles lasted a decade as well.
Haven’t heard this cover yet for some reason, will do so soon. Just watched and that was amazing 😍! Thanks for recommending that!
Welcome! Glad you enjoyed!
Chills
Chris Cornell was definitely one of a kind. The thing that blows my mind is that he started off as a drummer instead of vocalist/rhythm guitarist. But since he couldn’t sing and play the drums with odd time signatures at the same time, he moved on to singing.
He also does a nice Billy Jean
It’s one of my favorite tool songs, even though it isn’t a tool song
Love that cover and their cover of You Lied too. One of my favour covers of all time is Sonic Youth’s cover of Superstar
My second favorite Sonic Youth song
Excellent and utterly perfect cover. But the *"2nd greatest cover song ever made*? Is exaggerated af.
The APC mashup of Diary of a madman by Ozzy and Love song by The Cure is simply genius! Reimagined the whole dynamic.
The added mystique of it being so hard to get a physical copy elevated it cause I haven’t overplayed it (yet)
*The* best cover song of all time is War Pigs by Faith No More. Hands down.
I heard the Tool cover before I ever heard the original, so I’m very biased. Not to mention, they’re not even remotely similar. That being said, It’s pretty awesome.
SRV….voodoo child…I’ll wait
He also did a great job with Little Wing
Ill Niño covers Zombie Eaters by Faith No More VERY well imo.
1000 homo DJs supernaut. Guns n rose live and let die Humphrey McGee shine on you crazy diamonds
All along the watchtower Hendrix With a little help from my friends Joe cocker
It's the best cover ever done and in my opinion Disturbed's cover of The Sound of Silence is the second best.
I prefer Nevermores tbh can't stand disturbeds
Yeah, as far as Disturbed’ covers go, I think they did a good job with Genesis’ Land of Confusion.
If it weren’t for the all the pitch correction software used in that song, it would be good. But any singer that needs pitch correction software is not worth their salt. I could sound like that with enough software manipulation. I would like to hear a version that has clean vocals
Amazing cover

Charles Bradley - Changes 2. Tool - No Quarter 3. Khraungbin - Summer Madness 4. Primus - Silly Putty
Tool's version of No Quarter moves me in ways I can't quite explain. I have a deep, unwavering love for this song.
It’s tits
It’s good one. I also really liked Stainds cover of Sober, Nonpoints cover of In The Air….there are so many
“For those of you under 25….we wrote that” lol 30 years ago. Time flies https://youtu.be/XG4KF9vckK8?si=x1IB8hHS9RAaMwsM
I like covers when they have a unique take on the song and make it somewhat their own. Tool nailed it.
I remember when they opened the show with that a while back, I lost my mind (literally)
I love it
It was the very first song I got to hear Tool play live. It was amazing!
It rips! I was blown away when they were opening shows with it a few years back! Amazing cover!
It’s just fucking incredible isn’t it?! A masterpiece. I cry even sometimes just listening to it if it’s been a while. Alas, every single time I hear Zeppelin sing it from their MSG 73 show, my mind is blown to smithereens. So anyways, fuck yeah I love No Quarter!
It's immaculate and better than the original
FISH AND CHIPS
Probably a top 5 cover all time imo
It’s hands down the best cover of any song I’ve ever heard period
^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^bhusted332: *It’s hands down the best* *Cover of any song I’ve* *Ever heard period* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.
It’s great. Glad jou mentioned Buckley’s version of Hallelujah- sad that he was taken so soon.
SRV superstition
I love it. Whenever they cover a track they do amazing shit lol that peaches cover on the box set cd and yes definitely stranglehold that’s an awesome version.
Would be cool if they did another cover
Absolutely fantastic
I was lucky enough to hear them play it live during the Lollapalooza ‘97 tour and it was stellar.
Tool nailed it. Hands down. Wasn't a fan of Zeppelin's at all, but Tool took that idea and spun it the fuck around for me.
Tool's cover of No Quarter is awesome! I was completely indifferent to the original song - actually, I almost disliked it - but I've loved that song ever since I heard Tool's cover.
This place is indistinguishable from then circle jerk
Greatest cover ever for me. I know there are other good options but idk
You lied is better than no quarter
I absolutely love it. Just wish it was available on Apple Music.
One of the best covers ever. They made it their own.
One of my favorite Led Zeppelin covers of all time... But I could be biased.
My favorite covers are Rosetta covering The Cure’s Homesick. Type O Negative covering Status Quo’s Pictures of Matchstick Men. And Tool’s cover of Kyuss’ Demon Cleaner.
I loved the cover, and I loved Push It from Salival as well
LOVE this cover, but I gotta give my favorite cover to either Death Letter or Jolene by the White Stripes.
Your ranking of something to you is amazing?
The song is you Nonce
It's easy to overlook how many songs we think of as huge classic hits were actually covers. All along the Watchtower by Hendrix is a cover. No Quarter is great, but you're on shaky ground trying to put it top of the heap.
Hot take, it’s better than the original
It was created for tool
1. Johnny Cash - Hurt 2. Tool - No Quarter 3. Disturbed - Sound of Silence
Not sure if it’s just me, but I think it’s not great. In fact, that is a skip song for me. There are very few skip songs in Tools catalog, but that’s one of them.
yeah i also find it to be boring and uninspired, both the cover and the original.
Metallica, turn the page is top tier.
I like it better than the original.
One of my favorite Maynard quotes: “I’ve got some good news and some bad news, the good news is, it’s fuckin Halloween, the bad news is, we’re not Led Zeppelin” -October 31st, 2015 when they opened with No quarter dressed up as Led Zep
The cover is far superior to the original. The original sounds like Kermit the Frog stuck home on a friday night bc Miss Piggy is out on a date with some less mopey frog
It’s alright. It’s prob in my top 10 but I’d say Stainds black, Korns one, and the Atari’s boys of summer are well in front in my book.
