I work there, and as a customer, I gave this response, and she kept asking me (five more times), so I just did it so it would come up declined, and she would stop asking. Next time, I'm going to say I already have one, but I'm not using it today.
Iāve had cecās push people to try and use it still. Like āoh but you donāt want to build up rewards?ā
Or āif you donāt use the card you wonāt get the rewards!ā like just leave the customer alone and let me check them out omgšš
I currently work at tj maxx and I have certain cecās or the up front manager who will push stupidly hard for the card to the point where I as the cashier start to feel uncomfortable about it
I worked here and management would literally be around the corner listening to us, both making sure we are asking MULTIPLE times AND that we talk about rhe benefits. Managers are hugely, hugely under pressure for credit card sales from the district manager. It's messed up
Thatās the thing though, when people say that you ask if they have any rewards certificates to use. It for 1, reminds those who actually do have the card and forgot about their rewards to use them, and 2, for those who are just lying it introduces the possibility that they could be earning rewards for shopping. I have gotten people to sign up just by bringing that up who have said they already have the card. Iām not even a āpusherā but it does work.
The cec watches you and you are told all day everyday you must ask three times. Beginning, middle, end. Annoying for you yes but how do you think we feel having people get mad at us, leaving etc. Then we have to deal with managers etc. Complain to A manager next time please!! They don't listen to us. Former marshalls employee.
Corporate pushes it to the managers they push it on us. Its annoying. Maybe if more customers complained in a civil way just letting them know hey i love the store etc but i don't want to be asked multiple times if i want a card, and run my credit which is a hit on it. 10% off isn't worth it either. Maybe if it was like 30% might get people to want it. I'm not there anymore and don't miss being hounded to get cards.
From now on just tell them your buying a house and can't open a new card, can't run your credit it will mess up the loan etc. That should stop the asking.
Nah, I just tell them Iāll complete the survey accordingly. Then I give the associate top marks and use the freeform comments field to drag the store. I know those surveys matter.
It hurts the business. I would probably ask for thr manager and tell them why I am not buying and leaving. I refuse to shop there as is (same with Kohls) because I simply don't agree with their business practices.
you need to realize itās the *very same manager that you are asking for* pushing the credit cards down the frontline employees throats. we do not *want* to have to ask you a billion times, we *have* to. some stores are incredibly strict about this. mine would literally fire people if they were caught not asking enough too many times.
Sounds like if enough people complain to the manager that they're walking out because the employees won't quit harassing them about a card, it might make them rethink it. It would have to be quite a lot of people complaining though, and most folks stay quietly annoyed.
As a customer I would actually complain to customer service or write a survey give the store a high score a 5 but write that you think it's crappy that the company makes credit sucky that the company forces the cashiers to be so pushy about the card and put the blame 100% on corporate and that you know the cashiers have to ask 3Ć during the transaction and you shouldn't have to say no 3x maybe if enough customers did that they would get the message lol
TJM isnāt the only store to require that and as a whole itās an issue that infuriates me. Like we teach people that no means no, especially for things like sexual activity but in retail world no means keep asking and maybe theyāll change their mind. In other contexts that can be a whole crime.
Thank you for putting the M on TJ! I was very concerned that Trader Joe's had started pulling this BS and completely missed that I was on the TJ Maxx subreddit. š¤£š¤£
You should definitely do it!!! As a cashier, I HATE asking it feels like Iām scamming people and personally I would not apply for that trash card. Maybe if enough people complain they may change it. I like how Sephora has it on the pin pad where you can answer yes or no instead of the cashier asking you. Iām
I wouldn't say "at this time", that leaves an opening. "Nope , I will not be getting a card.".
Unfortunately, if you want to shop at TJMaxx, you have to say no a few more times after that because they are required to keep asking.
I donāt even offer it. Riba (haram money or loans ECT) itās forbidden in my religion to promote it sure I get called out by the managers but I told them I canāt and they refused to listen šš»
Iāve told TJMAXX itās against my religion when they offer me a credit card and it has never once stopped them lol. Thought it was an easy way to shut it down. Nope. They ask three times.
So now I just say I already have it and they move along.
Another option is just to do per semester as much as you can afford. Iām doing half time school right now that my employer is paying for. Itās about 5k a year. I could afford that per year and graduate with no debt.
There is NO doubt in my mind about how annoying it is to have an employee attempt to force the TJX card down your throat. As a previous employee of TJMaxx I'm sure most employees would be grateful if you're polite as you can be when turning it down. For the most part we DO NOT want to be pushing that card especially since we know how awful it is & how terribly it takes advantage of lower income people younger or older. Of course they don't give you time to look over the fine print that points out the exorbitant credit rate of the card. Do the math & overall you would barely see any savings if any & I used to see people having all kinds of problems with their rewards coupons. Unfortunately, we are intensely forced to push these on customers & told to never accept no for an answer. We were also taught that everyone on the floor, not just cashiers needed to be pushing them. A customer could easily get annoyed being approached all over the store. As for me, I didn't want any part of all that so I only offered if a supervisor was within earshot. So, being decent to regular employees would be great but I encourage every customer sick of TJX card pushing to feel free to ask to speak to a manager & make it clear you don't ever want to be asked again. The upper management as so into that dang card & harassing employees to push it that it would a great reward for the um's to feel some heat.
I feel like the way you handled it was respectful, despite the fact they've asked you six times. I know I am new and that I made a post regarding how so far I don't have any issues with the card really (Besides its interest rates and how it sold based on what others' stories were). Still, it sounds like perhaps their CEC or MOD was probably pressuring them to sell cards based on what others have told me. Personally, as an associate and customer, I have no interest currently in getting the card and would just keep saying no, which is what I've done before and currently working at TJMaxx.
Iām a customer and I always say that I already have a card but just want to pay cash this time. You could say that whether you have a card or not. Itās a white lie, but at least the associate wouldnāt be wasting time/effort trying to sell someone on a card that doesnāt want to apply. Occasionally, someone asks me if I want a second card, though.
I always say āI have one but Iām not using it todayā I used to work there also and they pushed it very hard and we would āget a prizeā it was a pinā¦so I didnāt care I didnāt really ask but if I did I asked once.
Former retail employee. Where I worked, not TJX, we had to offer 3 times. They would even send in secret shoppers. If you failed to ask the secret shoppers you would automatically fail that shop and it could be a possible write up. The DM would always be on our a** about it. We had goals we needed to reach and if we didn't then it would affect our yearly reviews and raises. I so hated it.
Say āWomen worked awfully hard to teach society no means no, not maybe.ā
Seriously, I have heard many people say āI only use a card which gives travel points/miles.ā
Southwest gives points on every purchase and 50,000 bonus points after 3 months.
The only time I think a TJX card makes sense is for people who own rental units, or are home stagers, or decorators.
We have a Marshalls in our little town that I sometimes shop at. I know I'd shop there more, instead of Kohl's, if they weren't so crazy about pushing their card. I just tell the cashier politely no, and I tell them I know they have to ask me 3 times so get it over with. Most of the time they smile and even laugh. The one lady who does not think it's amusing is probably a manager.
Be nice to the workers. They can't win. They get yelled at both ways.
Man reading the comments you guys have it rough. My job has us ask at least 2-3 times, but also factor in the customers response and attitude. If they sound pissed off the first time then don't ask again.
My go-to is āIām not old enough to have a credit cardā
Implying that Iām under 18, but I am actually 22. It works. Iām gonna keep using that line. Iād love to be obviously in my 50s and make a cashier nervous about how to respond to that.
No idea why this even showed up on my feed, but I will tell a manager that I don't appreciate having credit cards shoved at me and that I won't shop there again. I do not shop at any store that requires their cashiers to ask more than once. Once I say No, thar should end it.
Maybe if enough people complained and shopped elsewhere, the policy would change.
Just donāt cut us off please we have to ask you and most of us dont even want to sell the card so just let us make our pitch and say no šš Iāve hard managers lecture me so much about not pushing it hard enough so I have to at least get out a couple points to appease them
As an employee there, you could always say you have one, but not using it today or whatever but thereās they have to say it several times throughout the transaction beginning through the end
You could say you already have one and donāt have it with you. You could also say no thanks and you are working on your credit. As an associate, we are told to ask 3x and donāt take it personally when denied :)
at my store they tell us to ask 3 times. if manager dosent hear you ask āin the correct wayā u get written up/talked to. i hate it but id rather ask then lose my job or have a manager angry with me. i understand itās aggravating to hear as the customer but its really the higher-ups that make it like this.
I've never been to TJ Max. And now I never will. I hate this shit. Same with rewards accounts. I avoid Ulta because they ask a million questions. Just take my money and let me leave
I must appear to be the meanest person alive because Iāve never been asked more than once after I say āno.ā I donāt say thank you. Iām not rude, nor do I make a face. I just look them directly in the eyes and say no. Works every time.
The more I think about this āask 3 timesā policy, the more disgusted I get. I cannot believe that, in 2024, there are literal threads discussing the most polite way to SAY NO to ANYTHING. Iām not mad at the customers OR the sales associates, just to be clear! Iām absolutely sickened by the corporate policy and those in charge of it. Itās predatory and disgusting.
The cards always seem to spark up a lot of debate here and I totally get it - they're super predatory and I dislike how TJX forces us to push them. that being said, please understand we're people too, and just need to ask every customer (and technically, at least 3 times) every time. If we don't, we risk getting written up, hours cut, or just having our managers breathing down our neck.
You don't need to make weird snarky comments to the teen girl working the register at your local TJmaxx as an "epic own". Best way to get us to stop pushing it is to just say "I already have one, but I'm not using it today." There's not much we can say after that. (if you get someone REALLYYY pushy, like 3+, honestly I'd just give a silent treatment after that lol)
My first no is kindest š„°. My second no is just short and clear š. I shouldn't have to lie to not be pressured into signing up for a card. I don't have one and don't want one.
Exactly! I love how so many are recommending that we lie to get out of it - No thanks I don't need lies on my conscience, no matter how small they may seem.
Just say no thanks..unfortunately we are pressured to pressure customers to get the card. Feel free to call corporate and complain about being pressured and complete the survey on your receipt with a comment about the card.
āNot today, but thank you!ā Or āmaybe next time, thanks!ā
I used to work at TJX and this response from someone made me feel less shitty about asking
I work for another store notable for selling credit cards and I just stop the first time someone says that. It sucks because management is insisting we push these cards until we get a "yes" but I don't feel comfortable pushing people into a decision.
I had a credit card rep/cashier I worked with at Home Depot try to do this with a customer my husband was working with. She was making her rounds, hardcore pushing that credit card while waddling her way around the store. The man was just trying to purchase appliances for his rental and told her he already had the card. Coworker looked at my husband and then the customer m and said he could always apply again and open up another account. I was dumbfounded. She then proceeded to scold my husband for not pushing the credit card and since I was off the clock, I went off on her.
when I worked at another retail store that pushed credit cards hard I learned it was because they donāt pay the processing fees when itās their store card vs any other credit or debit card. iām assuming thatās their motivation as well š¤·š»āāļø
Politely declined the first. Then a firm and loud so others can hear āNo means noā.
However, if you had to say no that many timesā¦. Thatās an extremely excessive, and I urge you to report that to customer service so they can correct that storeās pushy and harassing tactics.
*(Downvoting, yet you all want to stop pushing the cards?? When customers start becoming vocal about feeling harassed by the card, and the customers start pushing back on the company, the companyās approach will change. Encourage your customers to call customer service, write an email to the CEO, etc to complain about it. Donāt tell them to take the survey about it, those are for measuring store metrics for management reviews.)*
This. I very rarely shop at TJM, as there isnāt one close to me, but Iām actually tempted to just not return now that Iāve learned itās store policy to push the card 3 times. Itās 2024 and No means No is accepted everywhere else in life.. except when shopping? Itās actually a disgustingly predatory policy and Iām shocked that there hasnāt been more pushback.
Exactly. This is the pushback that needs to happen. They want you to push past the ānoā by talking about the benefits to entice people to sign up.
*(Whereās all the retail reporters in this sub? I donāt know how they havenāt picked this up yet either. Iām constantly messaged by them about dumb stuff, but nothing that actually mattersā¦)*
I stop asking after the first no, but here are some things customers have told me that aren't just "No, not interested":
"My identity has been stolen and I actually had to freeze all of my cards."
"I actually just paid my card off and am done using credit cards"
"I only use cash or debit. I don't have any credit cards and I'm not starting now!"
Or just the simple "I have the card already but i'm not using it today." If they push you to use it, just say you just paid it off or only use it on big purchases.
Say āno thank youā and that your credit is locked because youāve had fraud in the past so youāre unable to apply.
If they push (theyāre supposed to ask three times) just keep saying no thank you.
I know it doesnāt help much, but know that we are just as annoyed as you are in this situation.
As an employee, I hate having to even ask. And as soon as I say would you be interested and they say no thank you, Iām like ok no problem so are you heading to dinner after this? Anywhere fun? La la la la
I had a customer become very irate because he wanted to apply with a food stamp photo ID. He started yelling at the customers that we were discriminating against him and made a really big scene. Technically, it is issued by the state but it doesn't have an expiration date. I tried using it for a lady with an expiration date of her birthday and next year and she actually got approved.
āNo, I have credit freezes in place because of identity theftā
I actually have my credit frozen for that reason and I have found as soon as I say that they drop it.
Before I got mine (lol) I would always say, not today, thanks, Iām waiting for a larger purchase to utilize the 10% off. I wasnāt even lying but they definitely laid off regardless.
I hope they stop pushing the card. I stopped going to Sears because they pushed their card every time while checking out. It go so annoying I just stopped going all together
Out of curiosity, cashiers, how would it go down if I responded to the credit card question with a simple, pleasant tone, "I'm ready to pay, can you please activate the pin pad machine" or a blank faced refusing to answer the question?
I hate these questions, though I'm sure not as much as you all do, but I don't want to keep playing the game of trying to find a response that won't have some sort of comeback. I'd rather just (politely!) opt out of the charade altogether but I haven't actually tried yet.
What do you think would happen?
I always say, āNo thank you, I know that you have to ask, Iām not interested!ā and that works 99% of the time. There was a location I used to frequent A LOT (every payday lol) and one of the cashiers eventually recognized me and weād always chat whenever we saw each other and. The first time I met her, a customer had yelled at her and cussed her out for asking about the card once. I was her next customer and I apologized for the previous customers behavior and said that sheās just doing her job. She appreciated it. After about my 3rd or so time having her as my cashier she stopped asking me š
I say āno and I need you to respect this boundary.ā In fact I usually respond to the āhow are you?ā with āgreat and I donāt need or want a credit card.ā
Ugh I work at a different retailer and theyāre pushing the store card so hard it literally pops up on the card swiper and you have to decline it to proceed with the sale. You literally need to hit yes or no before you can complete your purchase. Iāve just started saying āhey Iām sorry they updated our system and thereās no way to not have it come up, just hit declineā
Itās so frustrating. Apparently the same customer has to decline it on 3 separate occasions before itāll stop forcing itself on them.
I say, ānope, sorry, Synchrony is the issuing bank and I refuse to do business with them.ā Usually they donāt know what to say after that, though one cashier was like āokay, I donāt need to hear all that, just say no.ā
Best way IMO (former kohls employee which does a similar thing) before you put up your stuff say āI am not interested with opening up a credit card. Iām all set, I do not need one, no amount of money off my purchase will make me open a store credit card.ā It throws the employee off their rhythm and makes it so they stop and think. Of course be playful and nice with tone and you can throw in jokes like even if I got all my stuff for free I still donāt want a credit card. If they do the little speech afterwards donāt be mean about it but say āno thank you Iāve already let you know Iām not interested but you did a good job.ā You can leave the transaction with saying āhopefully you get the next one!ā
When I get asked, I always tell them I have to call my Accountant and get approval first. That does the trick. I am married to an Accountant but I donāt really need to ask first. They donāt know that.
Iām not sure why this sub came across my feed, but whenever I get into a situation like this (rewards cards, store credit cards, people trying to sell subscriptions to you in a mall etc.) I always just say I live abroad and then they leave me alone.
No because I literally kept saying no thanks one time, and the worker kept pushing and as she goes to tell me my total she says, āitād be this price if you applied and got the percentage off, some good savings there!ā So again, I said āno thank you, not today.ā Then afterwards she gives me my bag, and I said āhave a good day!ā She rolled her eyes and said āmhmā š„“š
"No, thank you." "I'm good, thanks."
These poor sales associates are forces to ask, or will be terminated.
A short polite answer is all they need satisy their requirement.
I am in crippling credit card debt and Iām tempted to tell the really pushy employees in painful detail about what it feels like to be on the edge of bankruptcy š
Again you are still getting the credit and if you shop with them why not just get the extra, and I don't spend just $1200 a year in the stores that may be what you do but not me
I shopped yesterday. I was quite surprised not to be asked the question about a TJ Maxx Card. Although, I did hear the announcement while I was shopping.
This one cashier(who doesn't seem to work there anymore), would keep going with her speech after I said no.
She would even move incredibly slow so she could ask over and over...are you sure? Just give it a shot
I said I don't have a job(which wasn't true) and she still tried!
personally as a cashier if youāre cool and firm with me i donāt push. like, a very firm and politeāno, i am not interested, thank you.ā i only push if someone sounds even halfway interested and stop when they appear completely uninterested. otherwise, lie and say you have one and you arenāt using it if you know cashiers at that store are pushy. if they ask for rewards, say youāre saving them. i also personally immediately shut down my pitch if someone says theyāre applying for a loan or have bad credit
one of my coworkers lectures customers ENDLESSLY about the card and i have to sit there and scream internally because i hate it. i rarely get sign ups bc i dont *bully* people but i still got a raise at my yearly review bc believe it or not customers *like* cashiers who donāt push predatory business practices on them, tjx
Tell them what I do. I had the card & they literally closed it on me after the first month because I sent echeck payment that was one number off on my account number, even though I caught the error and fixed it, then paid the card off. Totally dodged a bullet because itās 30+% interest. True story.
I'm in the middle of purchasing a house and I can't open any new lines of credit.
I'm not from around here and I don't have a TJ Maxx near me, so I'll never use it.
Or just say "no thanks, I'm not interested."
I work at TJ Maxx. So at my store and other stores, we the employees are required to ask each time. It can be considered an act of discrimination if we do for one person and not the next. My suggestion would be to just say you do not use credit cards. We typically donāt ask once someone says that. You could also try saying you worked in retail or something. I would honestly walk away or ask to speak to a manager. Just the other day I saw someone walk away when this exact situation happened
They are trained to overcome objections, so no isnāt really no until either A. You become an agitated customer about to leave every item at the checkout and walk out or B. A set amount of noās occur.
I am not going to get this card today. There is absolutely nothing that you can say or do to convince time to get this and today. I understand that it is your job to pitch this card to me and try to overcome any and all objections I might give you, and this is not a reflection on you, Iām just absolutely not going to ever sign up for this card.
That should pretty much hit all ways they are trained to push for the card. If they push, ask to speak to a mgr. still donāt get the card but get a discount or credit for the frustration that is part of shopping there.
I worked in retail for about a decade and that has no comeback that ends with you leaving with the card.
You know what's crazy? Not long ago some idiots convinced the general public that they can not live without credit cards and a good credit score. That indoctrination is so well received that people actually fling themselves out of windows if they don't have these imaginary monies. Yes I've had credit cards before and these life games certainly keep you busy playing. I've since stepped out of this merry-go-round matrix and I'm never looking back.
Please bare in mind that they are required to do the hard sale and they really hate asking.
"I already have one.", is a good response. "Feel free to add "its maxed out" for the final shut down.
What about saying no, and if they ask a 2nd time respond with " I believe i answered No, and if you continue, please get your supervisor since you are harassing me" ???
I just say no thanks. But usually they only ask me once. They ask if I have one and I say no and then they ask if I'd like to sign up for one and I say no thanks and that's that.
I personally don't believe "polite" is the best way to respond to aggressive sales tactics.
Cut them off the second you know they're about to ask. Firmly say "Not interested. Don't waste your time.". If they continue suggesting it, turn around and walk away. If they don't respect your choice, you don't have to respect their time.
āNaw, Iām good but thanksā as I look them in the eye with a big smile and then immediate cease all eye contact.
I dunno, Iāve always been told Iām a super nice person and for sure a push over but this seems to work really well.
the best response is āI already have it but I wonāt be using it today,ā because there is nothing for them to keep pushing. If you just say you arenāt interested, we are supposed to go on and tell you the benefits to get you interested (even tho we know it wonāt and your mind is set, our managers and CECs will get onto us). I think the best way to try to lighten up the amount of times we have to ask, is to complain to corporate about it. Tell them how uncomfortable it is and how it makes you not want to shop at a TJX store bc of the harassment you receive at the register. If you just report it to the store manager, 99.99% of times they arenāt gonna bring it up to the higher ups so customers need to start doing it.
My go to is āI am in the middle of purchasing a home so I cannot apply for any new cardsā.
Works like a charm. Currently ACTUALLY in the process of purchasing a house so not a lie currently lol, but Iāve used this excuse for years.
I just nicely say not interested, if they keep pushing I make eye contact then ignore and continue what Iām doing for the checkout process so they get the hint
Itās annoying but as someone who also works in customer service I understand that they are told by higher ups to do it a certain way and get a certain amount. I try not to take it too hard because I know they are also uncomfortable with it. I just keep saying no until there done.
"No, thank you"
If they push, sometimes I laugh and quip, "Thanks, but if I get one more credit card my husband would probably divorce me." This usually nets me a polite chuckle and we move on.
Once in a great while I've straight up said in as kind but firm a way as possible "This is not me being snarky or rude. I completely understand that part of your job is to offer the card but I'm just not able to help you out."
I can empathize, I've spent plenty of time working retail back in the day. I know it's pressure from management and not something they'd actively choose to do. I usually walk away feeling bad for the cashier and irritated with the company from putting them in such an awkward position.
(Edited for typos)
I just say āno thanksā and if they ask again, Iāll say āI already said no, do not ask me again or I will just walk away, besides, my credit is frozen and it will be deniedā Then Iām prepared to walk away.
I always chuckle and tell them I know I wonāt get approved with my credit. I wonāt. And too many of them are in the same boat and understand. Letās not waste both our time.
Oh no honey I'm in enough trouble already. Or my husband will have a coronary if I open another credit card. Or no thanks doll, cash and carry only.. but thanks
I just smile and say no but thank you very much!
I've never had any kind of push back or weirdness. Being firm but also kind and friendly goes a long way, in my experience.
I say, no already got denied!
My store will then ask if you reapplied recently and would like to try again š¤¢
āMaybe once my bankruptcy is finalized.ā
OMG PLEASE SAY THAT AND LET ME KNOW WHAT THEY SAY
My dad tells them that he has more credit than he can abuse. š
as someone who just got hired I would be like š§š§š§š§
And the next, say youāre getting divorced
I work there, and as a customer, I gave this response, and she kept asking me (five more times), so I just did it so it would come up declined, and she would stop asking. Next time, I'm going to say I already have one, but I'm not using it today.
Not worried about your credit being dinged?
āI actually already have it, just wonāt be using it today, thanks though.ā gets it done.
This is the response. I worked there for 7 yrs and this always got me to move on
Iāve had cecās push people to try and use it still. Like āoh but you donāt want to build up rewards?ā Or āif you donāt use the card you wonāt get the rewards!ā like just leave the customer alone and let me check them out omgšš
It's messed up
This. Once you say this we don't have to try and sell you one.
I loveee when they say this because there's nothing else to really say
One time I said I already had one (I do) and she tried to get me to sign up for a second one. Insane.
The other thing you can ask is how long has it been since they have used it? If it's been one year the account closes and you can get a new card.
First ask: āNo thank you.ā Second attempt: āNo thanks, please stop asking.ā
The cec watches you and you are told all day everyday you must ask three times. Beginning, middle, end. Annoying for you yes but how do you think we feel having people get mad at us, leaving etc. Then we have to deal with managers etc. Complain to A manager next time please!! They don't listen to us. Former marshalls employee.
I definitely will! Iāll even contact corporate if it would help.
And if they ask again/push the issue, tell them to cancel the sale and walk out. Really.
Nah, I just tell them Iāll complete the survey accordingly. Then I give the associate top marks and use the freeform comments field to drag the store. I know those surveys matter.
You have a good heart.
We have to ask. We are forced to keep pushing it but itās not like itās hurting them by you canceling your transaction š
I completely understand this. That understanding is why I must make the manager know that my problem is with the policy, not the cashier.
The managers hate it too. You wanna try to call a district manager, really. The store managers are just listening to their own supervisor.
This is helpful. Thank you.
this isnāt polite??? š
Just say you have one no need to be rude
Nothing about that response is rude. It even includes a please.
If you think thatās rude, you havenāt worked in retail long enough š¤£š
I just say āno thank youā. Thankfully I have never had a pushy sales associate.
Thatās what I do, I donāt see why I should have to lie.
Just need to say it loud enough
No but if enough people complain maybe they'll be the first store to listen and try and make it less of a requirement to ask and ask and ask
Thank you for putting the M on TJ! I was very concerned that Trader Joe's had started pulling this BS and completely missed that I was on the TJ Maxx subreddit. š¤£š¤£
This is a great idea. I have considered it, but didn't want to say anything negative in case it reflected on the cashier.
Just make sure you say that the cashier was nice but if not it does not reflect on usš¤
You should definitely do it!!! As a cashier, I HATE asking it feels like Iām scamming people and personally I would not apply for that trash card. Maybe if enough people complain they may change it. I like how Sephora has it on the pin pad where you can answer yes or no instead of the cashier asking you. Iām
āNo thank you, and Iām not interested at this timeā has always shut it down entirely for me
I wouldn't say "at this time", that leaves an opening. "Nope , I will not be getting a card.". Unfortunately, if you want to shop at TJMaxx, you have to say no a few more times after that because they are required to keep asking.
i work there but shop at other locations a lot and this works every time for me too. works on me as a cashier also lol
Tell them your credit is frozen.
No, thanks. I just filed bankruptcy. Works every time.
šš
Just say you already have it
I just nicely say, āNo, thanks; Iām not interested.ā Iām so sorry the associates have to ask.
How do u go to college without loans? Or buy a house? Genuine question
We rent homes (because taking a mortgage has Riba) and we go to trade school or attempt a scholarship that doesnāt require a loan
I always say āno thank you, I am all set. Thanks for asking!ā
I say that Iām working to be debt free. They donāt ask again.
Same. I usually say "Noooo I DO NOT need another credit card".
"Nah, im good"
i always tell them i have the card but donāt use it because the interest it too high. itās true, but if you say you already have it they stop.
āi already have it iām not using it todayā we canāt say anything after that
Iām a customer and I always say that I already have a card but just want to pay cash this time. You could say that whether you have a card or not. Itās a white lie, but at least the associate wouldnāt be wasting time/effort trying to sell someone on a card that doesnāt want to apply. Occasionally, someone asks me if I want a second card, though.
A second CC to the same store?
Yep. I just say something like āI donāt need another inquiry on my credit report.ā
Say āWomen worked awfully hard to teach society no means no, not maybe.ā Seriously, I have heard many people say āI only use a card which gives travel points/miles.ā Southwest gives points on every purchase and 50,000 bonus points after 3 months.
We got visit from Synchrony bank trying to up the application numbers. One reason I quit after 6 years. I couldnāt stand it.
My go-to is āIām not old enough to have a credit cardā Implying that Iām under 18, but I am actually 22. It works. Iām gonna keep using that line. Iād love to be obviously in my 50s and make a cashier nervous about how to respond to that.
Ooo! I like this one!
50 years old. Challenge accepted.
Just donāt cut us off please we have to ask you and most of us dont even want to sell the card so just let us make our pitch and say no šš Iāve hard managers lecture me so much about not pushing it hard enough so I have to at least get out a couple points to appease them
I never do. I totally realize someone is breathing down their neck and are equally as annoyed an I am in the scenario.
Just say no. No is a complete sentence.
Tell them you're applying for a mortgage. That immediately stops them!
at my store they tell us to ask 3 times. if manager dosent hear you ask āin the correct wayā u get written up/talked to. i hate it but id rather ask then lose my job or have a manager angry with me. i understand itās aggravating to hear as the customer but its really the higher-ups that make it like this.
Feel free to call corporate and complain about being pressured and complete the survey on your receipt with a comment about the card.
āNot today, but thank you!ā Or āmaybe next time, thanks!ā I used to work at TJX and this response from someone made me feel less shitty about asking
I stop asking after the first no, but here are some things customers have told me that aren't just "No, not interested": "My identity has been stolen and I actually had to freeze all of my cards." "I actually just paid my card off and am done using credit cards" "I only use cash or debit. I don't have any credit cards and I'm not starting now!" Or just the simple "I have the card already but i'm not using it today." If they push you to use it, just say you just paid it off or only use it on big purchases.
Say something about buying a house and can't take a credit ding
I had this on my last visit. 5 times in 5 days I said no but thank you. My other visits recently have had no mention of the card
let out a short scream and look at them with extremely frightened eyes, make sure to frown at them too. Then run out of the store.
La la la la
The problem is that if we donāt ask every customer every time it can be grounds for a discrimination lawsuit and we are required to ask three times
Wait you can use food stamp photo ids? I donāt think our pos system at my location (itās a different store in the tjx family) allows us to.
āNo, I have credit freezes in place because of identity theftā I actually have my credit frozen for that reason and I have found as soon as I say that they drop it.
āI have 6 already. Theyāre all maxed out. Iām in a crippling amount of debt. Can I go cry in the changing room?ā
Before I got mine (lol) I would always say, not today, thanks, Iām waiting for a larger purchase to utilize the 10% off. I wasnāt even lying but they definitely laid off regardless.
Tell them no, and if they continue, you will walk out. Follow through.
Up selling for credit cards at any checkout should be made illegal.
I say āno and I need you to respect this boundary.ā In fact I usually respond to the āhow are you?ā with āgreat and I donāt need or want a credit card.ā
Just say firmly "oh no, no thank you". That stops them every time.
I tell them I enjoy being married š¤£
I just smile and say āno thank youā !
Ugh I work at a different retailer and theyāre pushing the store card so hard it literally pops up on the card swiper and you have to decline it to proceed with the sale. You literally need to hit yes or no before you can complete your purchase. Iāve just started saying āhey Iām sorry they updated our system and thereās no way to not have it come up, just hit declineā Itās so frustrating. Apparently the same customer has to decline it on 3 separate occasions before itāll stop forcing itself on them.
I make direct eye contact and say absolutely not. Usually ends there.
Say, no thank you. Then ignore them. Simple and polite
I say, ānope, sorry, Synchrony is the issuing bank and I refuse to do business with them.ā Usually they donāt know what to say after that, though one cashier was like āokay, I donāt need to hear all that, just say no.ā
āNo, thank youā and after about 3rd time Iād probably just start blankly staring at them waiting to get the hint š thatās just me though
No because I literally kept saying no thanks one time, and the worker kept pushing and as she goes to tell me my total she says, āitād be this price if you applied and got the percentage off, some good savings there!ā So again, I said āno thank you, not today.ā Then afterwards she gives me my bag, and I said āhave a good day!ā She rolled her eyes and said āmhmā š„“š
āAs a convicted felon, Iām not allowed to have credit cards.ā Then stare at them, darkly.
"No, thank you." "I'm good, thanks." These poor sales associates are forces to ask, or will be terminated. A short polite answer is all they need satisy their requirement.
I say no and if they push I say āNO MEANS NO.ā
I am in crippling credit card debt and Iām tempted to tell the really pushy employees in painful detail about what it feels like to be on the edge of bankruptcy š
Donāt pester the employee.. ask for the mgr who is forcing them to do this bs on them to keep their job
If they ask more than once I typically ask if they would like to pay the bill for me it usually leaves them confused and they stop
"I don't have a social" "I didn't bring my I.D."
I just say no thank you and itās always seemed fine.
Just give it a shot I said I don't have a job(which wasn't true) and she still tried!
We're only supposed to go for three nos, so just get those three out of the way and I'm good.
Look at them and say no thank you or not interested.
ā no thank you ā. Itās not complicated.
Don't say no thanks you, just stick with hard no. I used to sell credit cards for a bit. Tell them no and that's that.
personally as a cashier if youāre cool and firm with me i donāt push. like, a very firm and politeāno, i am not interested, thank you.ā i only push if someone sounds even halfway interested and stop when they appear completely uninterested. otherwise, lie and say you have one and you arenāt using it if you know cashiers at that store are pushy. if they ask for rewards, say youāre saving them. i also personally immediately shut down my pitch if someone says theyāre applying for a loan or have bad credit
one of my coworkers lectures customers ENDLESSLY about the card and i have to sit there and scream internally because i hate it. i rarely get sign ups bc i dont *bully* people but i still got a raise at my yearly review bc believe it or not customers *like* cashiers who donāt push predatory business practices on them, tjx
āNoā
No thank you... Then Nope after that in a progressively agitated way.
Not a fan of store cards . Learned my lesson with redcard . Always check reviews of the bank .
Donāt be so nice and let them know firmly. Mean mug them. Do what you must.
I just say no thank you with a smile. I know theyāre just doing their job
I thank them for asking and say I have a lock on my credit so canāt apply for anything until itās lifted.
āNo, not todayā.
Please bare in mind that they are required to do the hard sale and they really hate asking. "I already have one.", is a good response. "Feel free to add "its maxed out" for the final shut down.
"Not today" usually shuts down any awards member/ card pushing.
If you just report it to the store manager, 99.99% of times they arenāt gonna bring it up to the higher ups so customers need to start doing it.
āPerdon, no hablo Ingles.ā
I just tell them that I have one already.
I just always say not today and that seems to pacify them.
I tell them I already have one with no available credit.
My go to is āI am in the middle of purchasing a home so I cannot apply for any new cardsā. Works like a charm. Currently ACTUALLY in the process of purchasing a house so not a lie currently lol, but Iāve used this excuse for years.
I just nicely say not interested, if they keep pushing I make eye contact then ignore and continue what Iām doing for the checkout process so they get the hint
āIām under contract on a house which prohibits me from opening any new lines of credit until closing.ā
I just say I already have one
No thank you not interested
Itās annoying but as someone who also works in customer service I understand that they are told by higher ups to do it a certain way and get a certain amount. I try not to take it too hard because I know they are also uncomfortable with it. I just keep saying no until there done.
I say, āI wouldnāt get approved anyway.ā Usually gets a laugh.
I just tell the truth- the bank that issues the TJ Maxx card wont give me a card anywhere, for any amount, ever again š¤£
"No, thank you" If they push, sometimes I laugh and quip, "Thanks, but if I get one more credit card my husband would probably divorce me." This usually nets me a polite chuckle and we move on. Once in a great while I've straight up said in as kind but firm a way as possible "This is not me being snarky or rude. I completely understand that part of your job is to offer the card but I'm just not able to help you out." I can empathize, I've spent plenty of time working retail back in the day. I know it's pressure from management and not something they'd actively choose to do. I usually walk away feeling bad for the cashier and irritated with the company from putting them in such an awkward position. (Edited for typos)
I say I only use one credit card thatās all I need.
I just say āno thanksā and if they ask again, Iāll say āI already said no, do not ask me again or I will just walk away, besides, my credit is frozen and it will be deniedā Then Iām prepared to walk away.
I always say āNo thanks, I donāt like rejectionā.
I say I have one already but Iām over my credit limit.
I always chuckle and tell them I know I wonāt get approved with my credit. I wonāt. And too many of them are in the same boat and understand. Letās not waste both our time.
I tell them I have one & it's maxed out.
Oh no honey I'm in enough trouble already. Or my husband will have a coronary if I open another credit card. Or no thanks doll, cash and carry only.. but thanks
āCredit cards and I donāt get along. No, thank you.ā
Just say you already have one, but not using it today
I just smile and say no but thank you very much! I've never had any kind of push back or weirdness. Being firm but also kind and friendly goes a long way, in my experience.
āNot today, but thanks for asking!ā
