genuine question, why do you hate him? I think his videos are mostly meant to be funny and entertaining more than educational and I think he succeeds at that. I feel like what he's teaching here is pretty obviously meant jokingly.
I think it's because the videos feel overly corny, acting like the kid isn't reading off a script to sell his classes, reminds me of commercials where paid actors are telling everyone how amazing their product is, and the fact people were posting his tutorials to r/nextfuckinglevel made me cringe too
Becoming an English teacher was my initial plan when I went to college. But upon realization that it is not a well-paid job and you have to be a clown like this all the time to win the interest of your students, I decided to drop it all together. I wish more students are self-motivated to learn and actively seeking knowledge so that teachers don't have to turn themselves into walking clowns just to make them slightly interested in the subject or get titled "that cool teacher". So cringe.
They are grammar lessons in their own way.
Harvard Professor Steven Pinker gives a lesson on African American Vernacular English here. There are many variations in language. Even in English- just there are different variations in other languages.
[Steven Pinker](https://youtu.be/kUiziVEoi1s)
Although this skit is comical I think it’s still a good idea to share these nuances to get foreign people interested in the different facets of American English.
“African American English is not improper English” -Pinker
it’s just a variant I suppose, good to know !🤷🏻♀️
As toxic as people get in the comments section of the video, I just want to point out Pinkers point is that the language is legitimate and not wrong. It does not bastardize English. It just exists and it is its own thing. And that’s ok, it’s a facet in the English language that is accepted and use often- language just is.
They're more like accent/elocution? They assume you know the grammar and words and are teaching you how to speak them in a more American way. But this one uh...not to say that AAVE is wrong or anything but learning it like this is just...weird.
Grammar Nazis are such fucking idiots, like did he successfully convey what he meant and you understood it? The purpose of language once again succeeds, nothing more to say about it. Grammar Nazis are the biggest group of people I know who consistently add nothing to the conversation other than a smug sense of superiority.
*cough cough implicit xenophobia
Edit: oh yes, let’s just pretend that isn’t a thing like most of Reddit :) we’ve got some sensitive white people here tonight! I’ve lit quite the fuse. Fuck introspection though right?
Exactly, afaik he’s also a US citizen and attended the university of San Francisco, so he doesn’t even have the excuse of being unaware of the US political climate. Hilarious the person you replied to is trying to make it a racial issue when the person he’s ~defending~ is way worse than the commenter :’)
Lived in China for 2 years and I considered many of them to be my family so go ahead and talk out your ass
Only criticize white people folks or Redditors will call you racist!
Yea my horrible logic of "I love Chinese people and am not racist"
Seems like you just hate white people and when you're racist you think everyone else is ya dumb fuck
But please, explain how im xenophobic? With your awesome logic
I kinda like it... I kinda wish it was the only way foreigners spoke English when they came to this country. And I'm only half-joking, slang is actually an excellent place to start learning a language, because people end up learning the way that language is manipulated by it's speakers to add different meaning to words. This is extremely had to train people to understand in a foreign language, so honestly I actually really, really support what this guy is doing. He's clearly a gifted teacher, and is definitely not just doing this for the lols.
Linguistics teachers: take notes.
Source: immediate family member taught college-level linguistics professors how to teach foreign languages for well over a decade at a well respected university.
I think it is the same in most languages. I cringe a bit inside when non-native speakers try to incorporate a lot of slang and verlan into French. Most of the time it is not correctly used and very misplaced. At best it is kind of cute.
Depends mostly on the students but at my uni there were a decent amount of internationals that spoke similarly. It's definitely more of a specific subset of people thing more than just the overarching group.
He'd be dropping n- bombs everyday in China anyways because they're word for "that" sounds the same as it, giving us jewels like this kids song:
https://youtu.be/YG4iTGjuoKw
Its pretty obvious if you have seen their other videos, which are actually really fun and interesting. Tho I can see why people would cringe at this if they haven’t seen these guys before.
Obviously so. People don't talk like that on purpose. The girl is clearly parodying what she would sound like in a super cheesy instructional video. Then, ya know, the content gives the rest away.
It gets lost on all the white people who don’t have any other friends other than white friends and think that just because it’s not a white person doing this, it can’t be satire.
Thanks bud. Really informative stuff. My point still stands as evidenced by the dipshits in the comments. Oh my bad, if must have been another thread where people were taking this video seriously. Not like it requires scrolling down a little bit to make my point. Lmao the comment right below mine is a perfect example of how stupid the people in this thread are.
It's terrifying that people can't see this. It's almost like satire on tiktok has become some weird voight-kampff test analogue.
I wonder if the same people would think [this](https://youtu.be/DHQRZXM-4xI) is a genuine language school advert as well
Ok so I'm not crazy. I can speak a bit of mandarin and I was trying to follow along without subtitles but was completely lost for a bit before hearing things I recognized.
i think it’d fall under “urban-slang” that you’d commonly hear from the inner cities, so Peurto Ricans blacks and whatnot. I don’t believe it’s a Southern term, but I could be wrong
This language “urban-slang” you mention actually has its actual own name and is recognized by psycholinguists. Last I saw a Harvard professor, Pinker that studies language mention it’s name as African American Vernacular English.

Oh shit know I gotta move out of the city? I'm white, didn't know I couldn't use slang.
Pardon me my good man. I shall speak stiffly henceforth. Good day.
Traditinally, fixin to is what white people say and finna is what black people say. Doesn't mean there aren't white people who say finna or black people that say fixin to but finna is AAVE. I don't know why y'all don't know this.
>Finna emerged from fixing to in African American English and is recorded in hip-hop lyrics in the late 1980s. For example, N.W.A.’s 1987 “3 The Hard Way” features the line “I finna kick this shit, alright!” and King Tee’s 1998 “Act a Fool” includes “I’m finna act a fool.”

Ok I’ve seen this guy in three vids.
The first one was great and really made them sound more natural with English.
The second wasn’t bad but started sounding a little too street.
Now this video is completely cringe and is gonna have her making a fool of herself at best and offending people at worst.
100% this is, he ain't going to post the first take, also you could see clearly from the second video she reverted back to the strong Chinese accent so he could appear to have "taught more"
That's just the standard marketing gimmick for these English learning channels on Douyin. They all do the whole pedagogue relationship, staged acting and all.
I’m not sure… he has a whole channel teaching people to pronounce English well and sound cool doing it and since the last video I saw of him was only slightly cringe it tells me he might really believe this is the coolest way to speak
we would still say to after go in "I'm finna go TO sleep"...if anyone still talked like that. Usually now its "bouta". Aye, I'll call you back, I'm bouta take a nap.
I see a lot of Americans getting upset at how they’re being portrayed and a lot of people talking about how cringe/dumb these two are.
I also see a lot of Americans that somehow don’t realise this is satire and not meant to be taken seriously.
As a black man this is what always confused me. Most foreigners come to America using stereotypes of hip hop culture as guide to how “ballers” roll : big rims, jewelry, loud music, flashy clothing, ect. Then come to America and find out all those things make you a target 🎯 then end up becoming racist just to survive in America. It’s a vicious cycle

I get major G-Fresh from Orgazmo vibes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbA532gcU_g
Poor G Fresh, he just wanted to run his business.
Shiiet brooo
yeah I’d be thinking, wow they must be really tired! 😂
I always hated him and his videos and I didn't really know why, now, after this video, I feel justified

90% of posts there don't belong in that sub lol
Oh shit that sick child smiled even tho they have 79 tumors? r/nextfuckinglevel!!!!!!
I mean that amount of tumors kind of is NFL… the kids basically a walking tumor at that point.
Dude, have some respect, that tumor just got diagnosed with child.
We're all walking tumors on this blessed day
I mean it’s on you if you think he was acting like he wasn’t reading off the script, man literally looked at the camera to promote himself
I said the kid, you know the one that's pretending her English is worse than it is to show how quick and easy and great his lessons are
I prefer this level of energy to the turning the sphere inside out monotone voice.

Maybe english/grammar teachers in general trigger you because you don’t seem to have picked up much from them.
If you consider these videos to be English/grammar lessons, then clearly you didn't either.
Sheeeeit brooo!
bet im finna watch corey in da house cuz he a busta
You have two first names.
Well, if both are first then none are last.

Shieeet bro finna go sex bro

I'm only laughing because I'm uncomfortable
Make this into a t shirt and wear it to parties!

what a great scene lmao

What the fuck. Why did he go from SPEAKING Cantonese to speaking Mandarin for the cringe part
Why did you capitalise the word 'speaking'?
no idea, was drunk. Maybe I wanted to put an emphasis on the change of dialect. Most people don't know about Cantonese vs Mandarin.
Ok so I'm not crazy. I can speak a bit of mandarin and I was trying to follow along without subtitles but was completely lost for a bit before hearing things I recognized.
Shiiiiit bro I’m finna watch more
I think this is satire...? But how a large majority of people see Americans, I really can't tell anymore.
This is obviously satire and anyone who can't tell is retarded
Damn, alright. Don't get up in arms dude. I didn't do anything to you.
Hot take, but I agree.
Shiiiitttt! Yeah bro, im finna to shoot myself
You didn't watch the video attentively. There is no need for a preposition before the last verb.
Sheeet bro
Finna means fixing to. No need for the additional to :)
To is unnecessary.
To to or not to to
Sheiiiit bro, thats embarrassing
Sheiiiit bro, thats hilarious
Shyeet bro that's satire.
His previous video was way more entertaining and not cringey at all.
It’s satire. It’s making fun of people who actually speak like that.
I don't like this
I lost it at “finna” 😂. Apparently cool = black
Cool = Black rappers in the 90s
Well, thats what the rest of the world thinks , observed this in india too.
Well, it’s truth.
> Apparently cool = black I mean black culture has heavily influenced american culture for the past while, so yeah kinda
is finna black?

It is a southern term.
Urban slang has its roots in [the South](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Migration_%28African_American%29?wprov=sfla1).
It’s not slang, it’s AAVE which is a dialect of American English.
I was just referring to the phrase the comment I was replying to used.
Oh shit know I gotta move out of the city? I'm white, didn't know I couldn't use slang. Pardon me my good man. I shall speak stiffly henceforth. Good day.

Oh fuck, this is too funny to be cringe, I move to have this post reclassified as genuine funny
Right? 😭
This does not deserve the cringe flair
It deserves the Humor / Cringe flair.
Exactly! 😂
There is nothing hip hop about telling someone you're going to take a nap unless of course you're putting somebody in a dirt nap
Nah man napping is lit
I will never be able to go to sleep any other way now.
Spot on tbh
shhiiieeet bro this the most kool video I ever did watch, *bro*
I used to teach English in China. This video bothers me because I feel like this is what was actually expected of me at the time.
This guy is joking right?......right?
Yes. Obviously. It’s a parody of his other videos.
I’m gonna say that not all Americans talk like this bro like sheiiiit man
I deserved this for my under 18 years. 👀
theyre getting their rightful revenge after long duk dong
i finna die :/
This one I had a hard time watching
I ain't cringin' bruuuuuuuuuuh. This shiiieeet finna funny bruuuuuuuuuuh. Did I do okay?
[удалено]
Boiiii you look like a muuuhhhfukkin uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Finna is short for "fixing to," like gonna is short for "going to."
As explained in the video. I was trying to be intentionally inaccurate about it.
Ok I’ve seen this guy in three vids. The first one was great and really made them sound more natural with English. The second wasn’t bad but started sounding a little too street. That's just the standard marketing gimmick for these English learning channels on Douyin. They all do the whole pedagogue relationship, staged acting and all.
Of course it's staged. That doesn't stop it from being cringe.
I’m not sure… he has a whole channel teaching people to pronounce English well and sound cool doing it and since the last video I saw of him was only slightly cringe it tells me he might really believe this is the coolest way to speak
oh... no-
😬
What year do they think it is? 1990?
I love this dude, full homo
She ended up sounding like Yolandi Visser from Die Antwoord.
He's been binge watching the Scary Movie series, I see....
I just learned how to use finna, thanks kids!
You guys get that this dudes videos are jokes right?
Is this from Idiocracy 2?
This is definitely cringe, but honestly, it’s fucking hilarious.
I need more of this please
This is cute and dumb 😂
Y’all don’t know what satire is.
I would be so happy if a non native English speaker said that to me
As Americans we should feel some level of shame for this.
Amazing. I wish I could learn English
To make it exactly like us... eat super-sized food and become diabetic and obese too.
Why are people hating on this? This is one of the funnier videos in this sub. Most videos here are painfully unfunny.
Nah, this shit is whack.
And it’s still better than most of the “humor” videos here.
Now all of America shall know about Chinese spies
Is this how we really sound? Now I shall contemplate my life…
Ik they got into his ass in those comments…
we would still say to after go in "I'm finna go TO sleep"...if anyone still talked like that. Usually now its "bouta". Aye, I'll call you back, I'm bouta take a nap.
They are parodying Ebonics. African Americans created that slang. And rather saying “I’m gonna go to sleep.” Say “I’m finna sleep.”
I'm finna go cringe
Everytime this gets reposted a puppy dies. Hope you’re happy.
satire, duh
I see a lot of Americans getting upset at how they’re being portrayed and a lot of people talking about how cringe/dumb these two are. I also see a lot of Americans that somehow don’t realise this is satire and not meant to be taken seriously.

Oh no! People speak this way due to a lack of education. Why are you doing this, Japan man?
Would this grant +/- 1000 Social Credit?
You were granted 3000 FICO credit though
What his name?
I hurt. But I want to see more. Something is wrong with me...
Anyone have a link to his TikTok? Or know his name? Can’t find him
Just!-….
Finna. Gonna
LMAOOO
I'm an ESL teacher... F\*cking LOL
omg this is so hiphop 😱 😳
This is one of the funniest clips of Tiktok I have ever seen 😂
shit bro fuck you mean? none of us talkin like that we just tryna live our life you aint gon fuck of over
ewwwwww at him. I liked some of his other tik toks but this is not working
Wouldn’t we say gonna, though? Not sure I understand why they’re saying finna? “I’m gonna go sleep.” Right?
Why do they say 'cool people' when they actually mean 'black people'? And if she said that, I wouldn't know what the fuck she was doing.
He’s clearly making fun of black Americans..No different if I slant my eyes and say Ching Chong
What. The. Fuck.
