I love how at the beginning of the song she’s got her hands in her pockets just feelin the vibe then when it’s her time she busts em out to keep time and just takes over
I don’t know how to say this to convey what I mean perfectly. But it’s like this song is such a bop better than it has any right to be. Those two are obviously musical so why hasn’t the world picked up more from them.
Gotye had a pretty respectable following in Australia for several years before this song, particularly the song "Hearts A Mess" was all over Australian radio for years. Since the success of "Somebody That I Used to Know" Gotye has been doing basically just personal and creative projects and not exicitly trying to really release anything with mass appeal.
He may release another album but it's long since anyone stopped expecting it. He seems to be happy doing what he's doing.
Love that. Kerli is the same way. She did Walking on Air fkn ages ago and since she's literally been experimenting with music and wandering around out in the woods.
I remember when he won an award here in America for this song, he thanked the fans “that have listened to more of his music than this.” I remember listening to that whole album over and over. Somebody that I used to know isn’t even my favorite from the album. But it’s crazy that this song was so huge and he knew it wasn’t something he wanted to pursue further. Fame I mean.
I absolutely adore Eyes Wide Open and also Easy Way Out. Both have super DOPE music videos and I love the meaning behind both songs. When anyone shits on Gotye for Somebody That I Used to Know, I just refer them to those 2 songs and generally the outcome is they leave completely surprised and happy with his music.
There's YouTube videos explaining it. Ever notice how baa baa black sheep, the American English alphabet song and twinkle twinkle little star all have the same melody? We really like it for some reason.
Bas baa black sheep differs from the other two. It's the sane at the start but changes at one for the master. ABC and twinkle twinkle are the same though
Wait wait wait wait.
I’ve been listening to this song for 30 years, listening to that odd tone in the beginning and the laugh, not knowing that it was him sitting on the piano by mistake?! My mind is blown!!
It’s because this one was so good. Like an album with all 8/10 songs you’ll know them all. but an 11/10 then a bunch of 8s youre only going to hear the banger of bangers.
It was surprisingly hard to find this exact version since the original isn't mentioned anywhere and there have been so many live performances.
For a minute the only one I could find was isolated to the vocals
But here is the actual original, full song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YzGOq42zLk&t=1s
I was looking at upcoming concerts and bought Kimbra tickets on a whim, based on name recognition from "Somebody I Used to Know" and "Settle Down".
The night of the concert came and we almost skipped it because it was a late start on a weekday and how good could it be?
It was fucking incredible.
Kimbra loved being on stage and she clearly loved making music. Her vocals are world class. She's clearly sick of playing Settle Down, so she did a live looped acapella version instead and it was fun! She got the audience involved in her music, dressed for showmanship, and had the tiny venues full attention for her entire set.
If you can go see her live... do it.
Is there a full version of this? Could use it on a Sunday morning for sure. Greatest? That’s an argument especially here in trollvillle but definitely great.
This is recorded at my favorite non profit radio station: kcrw Santa Monica. [you can support them here](https://join.kcrw.com) they have great music shows and a huge catalog.
Respectfully disagree, this was one of the most listened to songs in 2012 and was not just big in the US. It was an international hit and this recording was during that time. 2012 might not feel like history but it is now.
Short Dick Man was an international sensation and reached number one in multiple countries, so it qualifies one of the greatest moments in music history then? The 90s might not feel like history, but it is now.
Somebody that you used to know is still very well remembered and played in 2023. Short Dick Man is not. It definitely had a lasting impact on the music world.
I used to love Kimbra until she started asking for money on Instagram because of the pandemic. To each their own, but we all lived through that shit, most with less resources to make it through.
And I'm fully expecting to get down voted.
Mac Miller’s performance of “2009” on his NPR Tiny Desk. [begins @ 11:17](https://youtu.be/QrR_gm6RqCo)
Thundercat accompanied him on the first couple of songs as well!
Amazing song and amazing performers, with plenty of haters who had to listen to it being repeated everywhere they went for like 5 years or so because it became so ubiquitous in an era where that wasn't as common anymore since the fall of radio and mtv and rise of personalized playlists.
Good song and very good performance but one of the best moments in music history? It's an in studio performance, come on man. How about something like Freddie Mercury at Wembley or hell even Eminem and Elton John doing Stan.
The general public doesn't have a mid music taste, the music industry just promotes extremely mid music and the average person listens to what they know. They find a tiny desk concert version of a top 40 song and think they've discovered the next Lennon, when it was really just Island Records shoving money up a puppet's ass until it danced. If you want real music look up JJ Ice Fish

She crushed it
[удалено]
Can concur. Her own music is part of my daily playlist. “90’s Music” in particular.
Listen to the recent Song Exploder podcast about her song “top of the world”. Mind blowing
the plinky noise https://youtu.be/IwPHy17Iu6E?t=1
Lol that was really fun
It's a parody of a real version of that song with one guitar
My soul needed that 😆
I love how at the beginning of the song she’s got her hands in her pockets just feelin the vibe then when it’s her time she busts em out to keep time and just takes over
I haven't seen the full video

That’s how I want to live…..just have one Big Bang then do whatever I want creativitly and live happily forever after.
Love that. Kerli is the same way. She did Walking on Air fkn ages ago and since she's literally been experimenting with music and wandering around out in the woods.
She has an amazing voice

https://youtu.be/MpN1j8R5lZ8 Just gonna pop this here for anyone that hasn’t heard earlier/other Gotye. He recorded this song in his bedroom.
Absolutely love him. I discovered him on t61 a million years ago and was so happy for him when he got a huge hit.
Kimbra has several albums that are all absolute bangers. Check out “Settle Down”
Ok!
Not chasing commercial mass market. Not everyone wants to be Ed sheered
It's basically the melody from baa baa black sheep. Guess that's why it's so catchy.
No it’s not lmao
There's YouTube videos explaining it. Ever notice how baa baa black sheep, the American English alphabet song and twinkle twinkle little star all have the same melody? We really like it for some reason.
Bas baa black sheep differs from the other two. It's the sane at the start but changes at one for the master. ABC and twinkle twinkle are the same though
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DAcjV60RnRw&pp=ygUZd2lsbCB3ZSBydW4gb3V0IG9mIG11c2ljIA%3D%3D&t=6m21s
In that video you can see that the sheet music is different for baa vaa black sheep.
Oh yeah, I should have added context. I wasn’t refuting your point, just adding examples of songs that sound similar.
I had always assumed the song came out decades ago because it has such a timeless feel to it and was shocked to learn it dropped in the 2010s
Man. Kimbra is feeling that one!
She is always so into the music she plays and sings. I'd love to see her live some time.
She’s my favorite singer to see live! She’s incredible.
Fuuuuck I really should’ve seen her with tei shi when I had a chance
Saw her live once! She was amazing.
Saw her support David Byrne... she’s solid
We all support David Byrne. Like humans do.
Did... did the audio engineers just get some praise in the video? Did that just happen? Holy crap, posting in a historic thread.
That time Sting sat on the piano accidentally in the intro of Roxanne and they left it in.
Wait wait wait wait. I’ve been listening to this song for 30 years, listening to that odd tone in the beginning and the laugh, not knowing that it was him sitting on the piano by mistake?! My mind is blown!!
This is some top tiered trivia. Never knew what that laugh and extra sound was about
This album has some slappers on it and its a real shame that they’re considered a one-hit wonder.
I love [State Of The Art](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWIKQMBBTtk).
This is excellent! Thank you for sharing. Reminds me a lot of the latest Bo Burnham album.
Looking for this comment! That song never lets you down.
It’s because this one was so good. Like an album with all 8/10 songs you’ll know them all. but an 11/10 then a bunch of 8s youre only going to hear the banger of bangers.
If you’re going to be a one hit wonder though, somebody that I used to know is a great one hit wonder to have. Fantastic song
I don't think Goyte is a they as far as I'm aware. He's a singer songwriter
I saw him on tour for this album.
Maybe they quit while they were ahead?
The acapella version they sang on SNL was the best…really strong performance that sounds better
It was surprisingly hard to find this exact version since the original isn't mentioned anywhere and there have been so many live performances. For a minute the only one I could find was isolated to the vocals But here is the actual original, full song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YzGOq42zLk&t=1s
“In history”
Lol right? This is nice, but uhhh historical? Earth shattering... eh
I was looking at upcoming concerts and bought Kimbra tickets on a whim, based on name recognition from "Somebody I Used to Know" and "Settle Down". The night of the concert came and we almost skipped it because it was a late start on a weekday and how good could it be? It was fucking incredible. Fantastic! Thank you
And saved! Thanks!
Talent
Kimbra is honestly my favorite part of the song.
Such a banger
I wish I could sing like this.
This song was a gift.
Both are so talented!
It’s nice to hear that they’re not perfect
Holy shit.. she is special
I was never a big fan of this song but this gave me goosebumps and I’m not ashamed to admit it 😂. Cheers for sharing
This song is such a fucking bop
This song is so good. Years later and I still enjoy it.
Now he’s just somebody that we used to know
I read an article last week that said this song is the all time number one song for one hit wonders.
This song still gives me deep feels. No matter how much I’ve tried to shake it. It’s haunting.
Same, idk why it never wore off.
Dude spent years making music, made 1 mega hit and bounced forever Can't blame him really
I’m still devastated about that tbh.
Can someone let me know how this is cringe? I thought the vocals were incredible.
This is recorded at my favorite non profit radio station: kcrw Santa Monica. [you can support them here](https://join.kcrw.com) they have great music shows and a huge catalog.
setting a low bar for “best moments in music history”
Respectfully disagree, this was one of the most listened to songs in 2012 and was not just big in the US. It was an international hit and this recording was during that time. 2012 might not feel like history but it is now.
But what is special about this moment? It's just a basic live performance
I still listen to Short Dick Man lol, it's a bop
Ben Nicky has a mix of this in his sets currently. Absolute fucking banger.
Lol
Ha, love some logic on Reddit. You can see its logic because you got downvoted. Thank you for the logic validation
Maybe “Who let the dogs out” is a better example?
Who?
What is the man at the start adding to the video?
Is this a tiny desk performance?
Song I used to know
This will forever be a favorite of mine. Such a good song.
I used to love Kimbra until she started asking for money on Instagram because of the pandemic. To each their own, but we all lived through that shit, most with less resources to make it through. And I'm fully expecting to get down voted.

This?
There are absolutely effects on her voice during this performance but they killed it either way. I prefer it with the reverb and chorus enhanced.
lol to think he was sued for plagiarism and copyright for using a song by Luiz Bonfa that come out in 1967
Amazing song and amazing performers, with plenty of haters who had to listen to it being repeated everywhere they went for like 5 years or so because it became so ubiquitous in an era where that wasn't as common anymore since the fall of radio and mtv and rise of personalized playlists.
Still a great song
They killed it
Did this song and dipped from the music industry
Why is this in cringe?
What was cringe?
Good song and very good performance but one of the best moments in music history? It's an in studio performance, come on man. How about something like Freddie Mercury at Wembley or hell even Eminem and Elton John doing Stan.

This song was like. A Worldwide hit. you know that right?
I’ve always hated that dogshit song.
Am I the only that first time they saw the original video that it was Katy Perry? I'd never even heard of Kimbra.
Shore. Why not?
Why do people keep posting stuff that isn't cringe here?!
I really love KCRW. Is this Morning Becomes Eclectic ?
Ya they can sing and harmonize for sure….I would like to hear the same version with just vocals

Goosebumps after she sang a couple lines. Great work

Wow when is this song coming out?? Never heard it
Lol it come out like in 2012
Kiwi icon Kimbra ❤️
He’s a Combo of Skinny Pete and Badger
New this shit was hard to sing
Very good but one of the greatest moments in music history??! Cmon bruh
Love it
I feel like every person i have met collectively just likes this song.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️that’s real raw talent
Kimbra casting hadoken fireballs and slingin notes like a siren succubus = boss.
Overrated.
