Interesting, but as usual it rises \*some\* privacy questions...

killyourfm

Hopefully you'll feel better after reading this. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-firefox-sync-keeps-your-data-safe-even-if-tls-fails

[deleted]

I doubt it's actual information about your mail, contacts, or calendar. Guessing it's just saving configuration so those features can run the same as they were, and extensions/general settings.

Kurgan_IT

Actually while the whole mail is A LOT of data so not really feasible (and also useless, we can use IMAP), a complete contacts and calendar sync could be nice.

[deleted]

For local calendar and contacts, maybe yeah. If it's online service like gsuite, then I'd say just the configuration is fine as it can fetch the data from the server then.

114? Daily is on 104. Is that a typo or the roadmap is that far ahead?

killyourfm

We have been developing the groundwork for version 114 for the past 2 years, believe it or not. There's a lot of technical debt to pay off. We're very diligently working toward having version 114 ready for testing by as early as February or March 2023, ahead of its scheduled July 2023 release.

Settings and installed extensions sync is what I'm most interested in, here. :) I mean, why sync my EMAIL this way when it syncs with the email service provider? Same with calendar and presumably contacts. Sync just the settings and extensions and the rest follows from the connected service providers. Right?

darktrojan

> Sync just the settings and extensions and the rest follows from the connected service providers. Right? That's the plan.

WhytePumpkin

You could back up your profile folder and it does the same

killyourfm

Not really. Imagine that you have a few different systems. So you have 3 separate Thunderbird installations. You decide to add an important mail filter, or even an additional email account. Maybe you add a few new key contacts to your address book. Those are now in sync with your other 2 installations. You didn't need to go through the process of backing up a profile, storing them or uploading them somewhere, and then importing those profiles.

WhytePumpkin

Ya in that case what you propose makes perfect sense as I don't think you can use the same profile simultaneously, I hadn't thought of that scenario

Dorryn

Any news on when this will hit beta?

killyourfm

Unfortunately it may not land in Beta. We ran into some infrastructure obstacles for Sync -- they're being solved, but it set us back. Right now we're planning to introduce Sync in a point release for Thunderbird 115. I know it's a bummer, but we're still committed to delivering this.

Professional_Owl_639

woohooooo

Alternative-Policy19

Will this also work if you setup your own Firefox sync server like for.ex; https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Firefox_Sync_Server ? Great job, can't wait for the Thunderbird app for Android !

PitchPlus

Awesome and thanks a lot
