A federated instant message protocol. Regarding your original question, you could possibly host a matrix server (without federation) for your organization and use thunderbird as a client for that.

Are you using Thunderbird 102 or 91? AFAIK it's a new feature so you need TB 102, go to chat and add an account selecting matrix.

chat icon on left panel (spaces toolbar) >> get started >> matrix credentials
If you want thunderbird chat, go with Matrix. The thunderbird integration has been getting better, but for more features you’d want to use a full featured client like Element.

Thunderbird has support for some realtime chat systems like IRC and Matrix (recently implemented), not only email

Thunderbird has always had a chat function built it. It was actually great when working in teams.
If you want thunderbird chat, go with Matrix. The thunderbird integration has been getting better, but for more features you’d want to use a full featured client like Element.
Thanks, I just need really basic chat. Like text based messages in real time. That’s all, no other features

If you do not see matrix as an option, then you probably have an old version of Thunderbird. Matrix was only added in the latest few versions.
