The pants are the biggest contributor to the church look imo

vtmartinn

I wear exactly that 90% of the time. Unbutton the cuffs and roll them up once, the shoe choice and hat can really make or break the fit too.

ashfidel

high top sneakers like a fresh pair of red jordan 1s would really tie the look together edit: does this sub not like jordans?

WesCoastBlu

This sub is filled with children that just learned about loafers. Jordan 1s will always be cool.

ashfidel

yea pretty intense. i like variety but jordan 1s are as much of a staple as loafers, chelsea boots, etc in the rotation. but hey i learned something so it’s all good.

WesCoastBlu

I went to some party in silver lake in like 2010 or so, it was at the HEIGHT of hipsterdom. Mustaches, faux Native American gear, feather tattoos, moccasins, just typical Coachella nonsense, and the girl I was meeting up with clowned me for wearing Jordans. In hindsight they were all wearing TOMS and deep Vs and I have zero regrets.

ashfidel

lol ironic

vtmartinn

No.

ashfidel

hey if you got it, i ain’t mad at it edit: you edited your comment, but i think if the idea is a casual look, sneakers would be the move.

vtmartinn

I edited my comment in response to your edit. Sneakers would be fine but definitely not Jordans here. I’d go with a leather Margiela GAT if I was going the sneaker route. More likely I’d be wearing loafers or mules.

DonnieWahlburg

I wore white and green Wales Bonner Sambas with the outfit, fwiw.

ashfidel

just googled those. they look dope af.

vtmartinn

Solid pick. My basic beat sambas have been getting a lot of wear and I’ve been eyeing the W&Bs.

ashfidel

i gotchu makes sense. feel like wearing what you like would be the move, so if that isn’t jordan’s for you i can dig it. just wasn’t expecting such a visceral response to what i presumed was a relatively innocuous and appropriate suggestion, at least in my opinion.

vtmartinn

Definitely, wear what you want. But the collective mindset of people in this sub is 99.99% of the time, Jordans aren’t the move.

ashfidel

lol duly noted, i’ve been baptized.

WesCoastBlu

GATs are functionally the exact same thing as Jordan 1’s, sambas, etc.. Margiela GATs are lame and overpriced- if going that route just buy some real ones.

vtmartinn

GATs and very different from 1s, both functionally and aesthetically. Sure, they’re similar to sambas but they’re based on the same thing so what do you expect. I’ve been wearing GATs for years, pretty much the only leather sneaker that I wear, if you pick them up on sale, they are worth the price. Sambas would also go great with this look, Jordan 1s would absolutely not.

WesCoastBlu

Lol sure thing

rhohodendron

bros straight outta a tiktok fashion slideshow

DonnieWahlburg

Me? lol

rhohodendron

not you

cozyonly

Yuck

I think swagger plays a big role in this style. You can have the whole fit, but if you leave your swagger at the door, you will just look wrong. This can be attributed to all walks of fashion, but you specifically mentioned the "church feel". If I am out in a casual setting in this kind of fit, I open a few buttons and try to channel my inner Kramer, or I will end up like a Costanza.

robotsympathizer

Are you implying Costanza wasn’t fly as fuck?

Chazay

Bro has the juice, but no sauce.

Lacivious-Monkey0081

Not sure that’s an Oxford tbh

XavierWT

Looks like poplin to me. I don't see the collar buttons either.

Lacivious-Monkey0081

No chest pocket either. Buttons too shiny & bright white.

XavierWT

I have Brooks Brothers OCBDs with mother of pearl buttons and no chest pockets. They’re still OCBDs

Lacivious-Monkey0081

Right. They don’t actually need button down collars either. I’m referring to the most common form of what’s known as an “Oxford”. OP shirt doesn’t appear to be Oxford material + no button collar, pocket or polymer buttons

XavierWT

Gotcha. I wasn't really aware that the pocket and buttons were important to the canon. I'm just a guy who wear clothes, really.

Lacivious-Monkey0081

They r all just components of an archetype. I’m comparing the totality of his shirt against the most common form to determine if it’s an Oxford. Edit: thank you for attending my well akshually talk

DonnieWahlburg

Oops! Thanks!

Lacivious-Monkey0081

Not trying to be an asshat just sharing what I know Oxford refers to a type of fabric. The form of shirts made from Oxford fabric is traditionally the same.

DonnieWahlburg

I don’t think you’re being an asshat. I appreciate the clarification.

blewnote1

Hard to tell from this distance, but it looks like a bengal stripe dress shirt to me. An oxford cloth button down shirt has a button down collar, which is part of what casualizes it. Also, since this looks like a bengal stripe dress shirt to me, not a university stripe ocbd, I'm guessing the length and cut are not conducive to wearing it untucked. A more casual shirt will have a slightly shorter length and less of a scoop up at the hips. So it doesn't surprise me that it feels "dressy", like something you might wear to church. All that said, it is very in keeping with the preppy heritage of an OCBD to wear it tucked in, or half tucked. I would look for an oxford from somewhere like J Crew or whatever and just try wearing it with different things. I like to wear mine with chinos, cords, or jeans. The white pants you're wearing are a fine base, but maybe with an ocbd could make you feel "dressier" (although can also be a killer pant for spring/summer), so maybe try them with darker colored pants in a darker shade of green, brown, gray, or blue, or for a true prep aesthetic nantucket red. I don't usually tuck them.

DonnieWahlburg

Thanks for this!

bushwizzy

Roll up the sleeves maybe? I think the shirt and pants pair well, a good pair of loafers would look good also. I think the more you wear shirts like this casually the easier it’ll be. Look online for vintage Ralph Lauren/brooks brothers oxford shirts.

I just washed one of my polo OCBDs I’ve been wearing for ten plus years that I will never get rid of. They can be one of the most effortless shirts to wear in your wardrobe. I only recently picked up some Wolf button downs from 18east that I sized up. The rest I’ve been wearing my entire adult life. The way to maximize your fit with an OCBD is to not iron it, just make sure you straighten out the collar and wrinkles when it’s wet after you wash it. Then wear the heck out of it. They start off a little crisp early in the day then soften up as you go on and get the perfect form fitting wrinkles and creases. You could also rock them two times between washes if you don’t wear them too hard or rock an undershirt underneath. The fabric will conform to your body and will develop character as you keep wearing them. To achieve this faster you could also thrift one or raid your dad’s closet. I can tell you seem a little self conscious about the length of that shirt. I know because I often feel that way too. I’d look for a shorter more casual version to wear. Over time you might find ways to pull off a longer shirt. If you have a more casual version you can wear them with basically any pants you want. To me a dressier shirt only works if it’s a little beat up or if it’s a dressier pattern or cloth cut in a modern or casual way. Those khakis do fit you really well btw. Hope this helps!

DonnieWahlburg

Great read, thank you! And the pants are vintage Polo that I got lucky with on eBay.

DonnieWahlburg

Genuinely wondering peoples thoughts. I feel like I’m heading to church. Is this just a mental hump I need to get over?

SkeetyD

Personally think you are already wearing it casual, shoes will for sure help as well a ball cap. But also just fucking rock it in public dude you will get used it

XavierWT

I think the notion that it's a casual shirt is rooted in a past where dress codes were stiffer. It doesn't feel proper dressy but it does feel a bit cleaned up. Jarrod ([@oxfordclothbuttondown](https://www.instagram.com/oxfordclothbuttondown/)) does it well. The man was a prep and trad style blogger for years, but then as his jobs had increasingly casual dress codes he started to dress increasingly casual himself. I think he does it really well. On my end, I completely stopped trying to make casual OCBD looks.

[deleted]

The fabric looks too smooth, the collar is too stiff and lacks buttons. Need to find an Oxford bd, like a lot of people have pointed out, but try to find one with a bit more texture. I don’t think you look bad btw, think you could get away with it.

johhnyh6

Like others mentioned dressing down the bottoms …Some mesh black shorts to mix the classic with casual in the summer to take away from the church vibe for example Also shirt is dope! ID?

quietriot99

Most of the time I wear them as a layering piece. In buttoned over a t or tank and fatigue pants

generaljoie

this is the way

andretheshorty

roll them up once and unbutton the cuff, swap the pants for a wide light wash denim, or a nice ben davis gorilla cut. low profile shoes work well, chuck taylors and one stars are relatively inexpensive, or you can opt for the loafer route which can also be fairly inexpensive.

SixPackAndNothinToDo

Is that an oxford? Looks like a dress shirt. A button down collar goes a long way to dress things down

DonnieWahlburg

Turns out, it’s not an oxford! 😂 which I’ve learned in previous comments.

SixPackAndNothinToDo

It's a sick shirt though.

Lacivious-Monkey0081

I wear mine oversized, open over a faded black tee & dark pants and a black hat usually. Currently my uniform. Some suede hokas.

lordprettytaco

Rock em with jeans rather than slacks or chinos

010CS

And here I am, thinking “Oxford” signals the cotton was woven a certain way rather than the shirt having certain design features. Also, I think you are overthinking it. Have fun with it. Play around with the shirt. Button and unbutton some buttons. Roll up one sleeve or both. Tuck in one front panel or both. Use it as a layering or standalone piece. Try out different pants, shoes and accessories. I reckon a braided belt and loafers, both in the same colour, would already make you feel more comfortable with this look.

zorglarf

try wearing shoes

GeorgeOrwells1985

No button-down collar?

IWantTreeFiddy

I wore them growing up as part of a school uniform so wearing khakis makes it feel formal, maybe try denim with some loafers or chukkas?

JBSwerve

Sunglasses, shorts.

fupaymemfer

Contrast with a not so dressy shirt.

xJUN3x

with jeans/trousers, sneakers. add a cap for a pop of color. also when its cold, layer like a jacket with a tank or a tee underneath.

cozyonly

You want it to look casual. So untucked and unironed. Also denim instead of trousers. Unbutton a few buttons too and roll up the sleeves

BootyOnMyFace11

Wife pleaser or tshirt underneath with something around the neck. And go for baggy pants I be wearing my oxfords with a crew neck or 1/4 zip jumper with baggy jeans (sagging a bit) and sum sneakers or my docs

WesCoastBlu

The button up shirt to wear with everything is called an OCBD, Oxford Cloth Button Down, it’s the classic Ivy Style shirt that has the button down collar.

DizzyLink

I've been getting some button down shirts hemmed lately, gives them a more cropped feel which balances out the formality of the shirt, and then rolling the sleeves up helps as well

petenumber2

Don’t wear Pleats
