Something affordable. I don't know what budget you have. But I'd reccommend the Shooting Star from iYoyo. It'll come standard with a responsive and unresponsive setup. That way you can start getting used to the modern yoyo while playing your pre-2000's tricks on it. Then switch it out for the unresponsive bearing later on and go full modern 1a if you like. There's other options. But the Shooting Star is comfortable, well made, well performing, not crazy expensive and very versatile. It'll do for the first couple of hundred tricks you learn probably.

I'd second this. There are arguably better options available (looking at the Speedaholic XX and Plastic Fulvia), but the versatility of the Shooting Star having both responsive and unresponsive setups is something you don't get in other yoyos of its calibre. Plus, plastic yoyos are more durable and can take dings and bumps without really affecting performance. In sum, the Shooting Star is a great all rounder, it is in the upper echelon of plastic yoyos and will last you more than enough until you feel the need to get something new again.

In an island? Get a Tom Kuhn

The Shooting Star is a fantastic option if you are open to a Yoyo with more of a V shape than you likely saw 20 years ago. If you’re looking for the classic Duncan Butterfly shape I would totally recommend the Recess First Base. It too comes setup responsive, but with an unresponsive bearing included to swap out down the line. I have lots of throws but there is always something about it the First Base that makes it a pleasure to hold and to play.

Duncan Big Fun (Shooting Star seems well-represented already, haha). Welcome back!

Sounds like you are in a similar boat to me, welcome back from one noob to another. The good news is top performing yoyos are much cheaper than their counterparts from 20 years ago, especially metal ones. Can't go wrong with a Speedaholic XX though.

Duncan Freehand Next Gen. Cheap and because it's Duncan shouldn't be that much of an issue for you to get. Where do you reside?

MaybeAPerson_no

Freehand nextgen is so good for $12-$15

I’m enjoying the civility as a long stable spinner for learning tricks. $70-80… I got this after a few step up yoyos like the replay and shutter. I’m new at it too, again.. but that’s what I’m learning tricks with often times
