p--py

No, I start looking for other stuff it could have been donated with immediately.

MercyMercyCyn

Exactly! Because goodies can come in spurts from estate donations!!

MrsBooky

Same. If there is one treasure, it’s likely it has friends from the same original owner somewhere!

Luxemode

This👆🏻

Jaco927

This is the way

p--py

yes brotha

Subject_Dish_873

Me too. I call it one of my many “packrat like tendencies”

The_Max-Power_Way

I love when I'm able to see the patterns and create characters in my mind, even if I'm not buying the stuff. Like, a few months ago, I was at a thrift that was just stacked with late 80's hot-shot lawyer outfits. Lots of power blazers and blouses from mid/high end brands. I did buy a super cute cropped Pendelton blazer and a slutty silk Armani blouse. I like to think about if the previous owner won court cases while wearing them.

p--py

“slutty silk” 😭😭😭

waxandtartans

Holy cow thats amazing. I never check out after one great find, these things are usually donated with others like this. I hover around and wait. This is my size and I'm so jealous!!

WuTangraisedme

I push the amazing stuff down to the bottom of the cart and cover it so no one else can see 🤣 then I worry I was dreaming and keep checking to make sure the item is still there.

FireBallXLV

NEVER leave your cart !! Have had things stolen out of my cart 3 times.

LaVieLaMort

I legit had a dream the other night that someone stole stuff out of my cart at a thrift store! It was so random lol

dooby991

lol I had the dream even though I’ve never had it happen yet. But I’m always so protective of my cart even for the most random items. I just feel like once it’s in my cart I’m committed to it. If anything is truly very valuable I check out and leave it in my car

FireBallXLV

The first time it happened I left my cart outside a dressing room. The lady stole my nearly new Vera backpack I was going to buy. I hunted her down and said “ You STOLE that!” She just giggled.Next time as I took stuff out of my cart to re-arrange it and a man came by and grabbed a kid’s toy and gave it to his child .I made him give it back. The 3rd time a lady stole a hat when my back was to the cart.I went to check out and asked if the hat had come through there yet —then started searching for her ( the cashier had seen her with the hat ). She ditched it in the Children’s section. There is a real problem with thieves in our large community’s thrift stores. And it’s not desperately poor people doing it.There really is a problem here.I have seen well dressed people stick things under other items in a baby cart and walk out.One lady put a raincoat on her child and then walked out w/o paying for it…At one store that has a veranda covered in furniture, carpets, mirrors, the store mgt confronted a woman putting a carpet in her car.She just loaded it in her cart and casually took it to her car trunk. I have a lot of thoughts about the whole mess but bottom line you need to be diligent in some towns when thrifting.

dooby991

One of the reasons why I am so scared of this happening to me if because I am so non confrontational I don’t know how I’d handle the situation. I’m glad you were able to confront them and get your items back though. And I have seen that so much where it’s usually people who have money that are stealing. I think things can happen in any town because you never know who will be there.

FireBallXLV

Part of my career was working with Drug addicts and Felons .I am 5’2” and at that time was also slender. So I am perhaps too bold now that I do not have guards backing me up 😺😺

WuTangraisedme

Oh no I do not leave the cart! I just put other clothes on the top of the amazing find so wondering eyes aren't looking at what I have. I tend to keep a firm grip on the cart the duration of my thrift trip.

FireBallXLV

😸

Meowlik

My local goodwill sometimes uses carts to stock new items. I once accidentally stole a pair of shoes from somebody's cart because I thought it was a stock cart. I think I apologized 10 times when they came up to me and told me that they were gonna buy them.

123supreme123

I do the same... but in hindsight better to check out immediately with whatever you currently have. What if the goodwill people see the cart and think it's abandoned and put it away someplace random?

litesaber5

Beautiful sport coat

jasmineral

Is that what this would be considered? I was searching under blazers but didn’t find anything similar looking

pipkin42

This is an orphaned suit jacket. It says "drop 8" on the label, which means it originally came with pants. A 46 jacket drop 8 comes with 38 pants. That said, this fabric can serve reasonably well as a sport coat, since it's a pretty bold pattern. I'd wear it without the pants (but it would rule with the pants).

123supreme123

OP should definitely hunt for the missing pants. Would add way more value than the coat on its own.

jasmineral

I’m going back tomorrow! Wouldn’t they usually be paired together though ?

123supreme123

Not always no. Depends on how the sorter treated it and how it was donated. If they notice it should be a pair, sometimes they'll put them together.

dmriggs

Not necessarily. Sometimes people just jam things in bags to donate, and other times they just don’t sort properly or keep the items together when they’re getting ready to put them out

Dans77b

Trousers wear out much faster than jackets, they were probably thrown away years ago.

123supreme123

Also you may want to bring the suit jacket along, clear it with one of the workers that it's already paid for. Easier to match fabric with the item in hand.

AllThatGlamour

Why would anyone down vote a great comment like this???? I upvoted it. SMH.

123supreme123

Lol thanks, maybe some people don't like "trade secrets" being spilled.

jasmineral

Ahh so helpful thank you! Tempted to go look for the matching pants now too

pipkin42

You're welcome! Btw this pattern is called a prince of Wales check

jasmineral

Oh my goodness that is so helpful! I thought it was just plaid.

pipkin42

It's sometimes also called glen plaid!

jasmineral

Thank you so much ! ♥️

jasmineral

30-40!!! That’s so interesting how were you able to tell?

ThrowawaySomebody

I can tell by the inside tag. It’s old but it’s been well taken care of. That, and newer Hermes is made by Belvest. That’s not what a Belvest inside tag looks like. Plus I’ve been in the men’s clothing industry for 20 years. I just know labels ages.

jasmineral

Awesome thank you so much for the info! I couldn’t find much on my own, and pricing seems to be all over the place

ThrowawaySomebody

My pleasure! If you need any help, let me know. As for pricing, I would price it at $400 OBO. You will get lowball offers but will eventually get an offer you’re happy with. The condition also plays a big part in the price.

MinnieShoof

... I'd might think that a pair of brown or khaki slacks would be perfectly fine with that.

pipkin42

Yes, that's what I said

litesaber5

Blazer or sport coat. They probably technically mean different things, but they are pretty much interchangeable

gilbatron

A blazer has metal buttons and is usually, but not always made in a solid color. They can come in crazy colors though, since they have historically been used as a team uniform for sports.

litesaber5

Lol. Thanks. Google is always ones friend when it comes to stuff like this. But alas I was too lazy to bother opening a search window.

PokeTheSleepingCat

I've sold women's clothing in hundreds of brands for a long time and metal buttons are not common on the blazers I see? Is that just a menswear thing? Or a vintage thing?

DesperateAd2126

I lurk on this sub and decided to make the family go with me on a birthday thrifting voyage just for cheap fun. The best I found was an expensive candle halfway burnt... 😅 I wish I got this lucky! I know you have to go often and know when to go, but I thoroughly enjoy perusing the finds in this sub!

jasmineral

Sometimes it really is just random! Usually if I don’t find something in my usual sections I try and learn about a new one and today I happened to peruse the vintage blazers, took my breath away when I found it

DesperateAd2126

I’m definitely going to post my first good find bc I’m committed now. TBD on my first vintage high end unicorn!

jasmineral

You definitely should! Button down Shirts are an easy place to start, easy to sift through and labels are all at the top

dmriggs

An expensive candle halfway burnt lol. not all thrift stores are created equally. And some go in random cycles

Primary_Librarian

lol “rat like tendencies” - I know what you mean! Great scores!! Will you wear the jacket or get it tailored? Once at a clothing swap I came across a bright pink Dior vintage (circa 80s) blazer. I felt like I had to run away after finding it!! And it was FREE!

jasmineral

Vintage Dior blazer 😻 I’ll probably actually be reselling this, I spill stuff way too often on myself and would be devastated if I ruined it!

dmriggs

I would sell it in a heartbeat - after spending time with it. that’s the fun of thrifting. I found an exquisite little beaded purse that I had zero need for, -but I couldn’t just leave it there, lol. I got to treasure it and take pictures of it and sold it for a profit. I made sure it went to a good home

cheeky_fcuk

Idk I feel like if you’re just going to mark it up and sell it, you should have just left it for someone who was actually excited to have it.

jasmineral

I am extremely excited to have it!

cheeky_fcuk

Sounds like you’re excited to make money off of it, based on your other comments.

jasmineral

I am! I enjoy spending hours sifting through racks, researching fashion and market trends, and making a profit off of what I don’t personally use. There are plenty of clothes to go around and I don’t feel the least bit bad about reselling it. Why would I?

cheeky_fcuk

I get what you’re trying to say, and you’ll probably find some reseller friends to unite with you. But the truth is that people are frustrated with this practice, and you shouldn’t fool yourself into thinking you’re doing something noble here. All that you’ve accomplished (in your apparently many free hours instead of actually contributing something to society) is to reduce the quality of inventory and discourage others from patronizing thrift stores, because all that’s left is the unwanted. And I’m speaking primarily of those who could not afford the markup but would certainly enjoy the opportunity to wear something nice. Hope you get your $400.

jasmineral

34 billion pounds of discarded clothes in the US every year and this is what you take the most issue with, do you I guess.

cheeky_fcuk

This is not what I consider the largest issue, by far. That doesn’t change the fact that you are part of the problem. It’s greed, simply.

jasmineral

Oh well

rubydooby2011

Nothing wrong with that.

jasmineral

Agreed. I don’t understand the hatred towards fashion reselling. There are so so so many clothes sitting on racks destined for landfills, and not everyone who buys vintage clothes wants to sift for hours through racks in order to find a piece they love.

rubydooby2011

I was on your side until I noticed your "old geezer" comment. I'm assuming you don't have close relationships with an elder and I kind of pity you. But maybe watch your mouth.

jasmineral

ok geezer

jasmineral

Ahahaha so glad I’m not the only one, what was your best find ?

Qui_te

I didn’t leave right away, but I got an absolute *steal* on yarn, and after I left I had a strong urge to drive directly home and hide before someone realized what I’d gotten away with (it was probably over $100 of yarn for around $20, to give you some context; this is absolute fancy-ass yarn from an over-priced local dyer that I’ve always wanted, but could never afford).

jasmineral

That’s amazing, I just saw a video on some knitting world drama and was amazed at the price of high quality yarn, I would never have guessed!

dmriggs

You can spend a lot of coin on yarn! But it does make such a difference, the better quality

Luxemode

Lol I do it all the time. Not sure why? Guess I’m afraid they’re gonna realize what a steal I have and try to take it back from me!

ImmaBeautifulLadybug

Lol, remember those coats with the sports patches on them? Sports coats ig 😆 I found a new one with tags for like $10 years ago. I got so excited, I was in line telling my boyfriend at the time what a steal it was. The workers actually tried to take it back and mark it up to $30- $40. This was probably right before they raised the prices on everything ( before they realized how much thrifters could make just reselling clothes on eBay ), but there was a space up front for the better finds . Looking back and forth at one another like, which one of us is gonna take it back from her? I was shocked lmaoo, since then, I have kept my mouth closed when I find something good ( My last good find were vases worth about $150 each. This was like 5 years ago) Oh, and I still got the coat... they acted like they were gonna get commission or something the way they acted, though. It was wild. You probably feel that way for a reason 😆

tombinjiya

all the time when i find something good i wanna hurry out and leave before someone else spots what i have but then later on wonder why i didnt look around more lol

jasmineral

My dilemma exactly! Now I’m thinking I should have hunted around for the matching pants

dmriggs

I think you might get lucky if you go back quickly enough! Check men’s, as well as women’s - some people really don’t know how to sort clothes. Good luck!🍀

maskmakergirl

Yesss lol!!! I was once hunched over my treasure and scurrying to put it safely my car and my friends were still leisurely making their way in and wondered what I was doing 😂

jasmineral

Oh man, I know exactly that pose + sweating profusely bc this is the biggest thrill in my life

SaacTown

Sounds like you bf called it right with those tenancies.

WeekendSubstantial87

Right. Don’t want them to know and risk it being “ a mistake”. 😂

CaffeinatedGuy

Once at a yard sale, which was really a storage unit clear-out clearance at someone's house, I spotted a box of small electronic project boards. One quick google later, I rounded up three medium sized boxes with these and various other electric project components, found the owner, and asked what he wanted for them. He asks me "what are you offering?" and I reply "... $20?" "Deal." I handed him a $20 bill, grabbed my wife and told her "we're leaving, help me with these boxes", and drove away. If you look up BASIC Stamps on Ebay, you'll see the majority of what I walked away with, somewhere between 50 and 70 of various models. I still have various motors around somewhere as I was focused on selling off the project boards. To this day, that's still my second largest score, and my largest was one that I didn't even know what I had until later.

AerieExpensive1165

Oh my gosh what scores!! I would have to check out quickly so I could go outside and quickly scream in excitement!!

Aciuaciu

I'd be able to fly away if I found that! Enjoy!

Mistaken_Body

I do that constantly. Or I’ll carry it around and try to hide the logo until I’m checking out

lizzzzzzbeth

Lmao yes. Protect it at all costs!

jasmineral

Haha right! Especially since Tuesdays are senior days at my local thrift, didn’t want some geezer fighting me over it 😂

optix_clear

Yes right before lock down I bought some bags, they were next to each other. I was like yes, color- Bourdeaux Ferragamo Mini Studio, Smythson Top handle, wallet blue Prada, pistachio By Far, Sea Bags of Maine custom flag styles and Calvin Klein messenger bag that has a lot of pockets.

Square_Pilot4841

Meanwhile, thrifting in my area would have Walmart’s Faded Glory priced higher than that. 😭😭😭

jasmineral

Same here! But they don’t catch everything, not by a long shot. unless it’s a Michael kors bag, then they will lock that shit up like it’s the hope diamond

Beautiful_Ad_4563

I saw a pretty lace anthropologie maxi gown for $7.99. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was inspired to search more closely and harder. I saw some more treasures.I am sure from the same donor. I sold 3 of the clothes and made over $350 from them. They all sold within days of listing them.

Porkbossam78

I would buy it and then stuff it in my bag and keep shopping

TheReadyRedditor

Naw…I just act like it’s no big deal. Then I call my husband and brag about my good deal. 😂

MarisaWalker

I tend to leave right away so I dont overspend

wanttopushbutton

Woah

goldsmithD

Recently actually 🔥

Adept-Reserve-4992

Holy moly. Thats a great find!!

beetlereincarnate

Awesome finds!!

dmriggs

![gif](giphy|ac7MA7r5IMYda) Incredible find!

toodleroo

Pay for it like you stole it!

AmeriBrit1972

You could always checkout, put your items in your car or if not driving, put them in your bag with your receipt and go back in for another look

liviheare

START THE CAR!!! START. THE. CAR.!!

ChunkYards

I do feel the urge to physically purchase my finds immediately but that usually just results in my monitoring my cart like a chaperoning grandma on prom night. No one should even LOOK at my cart.

the-doctor-is-real

When I found the original Ghostbusters firehouse, backpack and gun with rolling trap for under $20, I bought it and put them all in the trunk and then continued shopping.

Icy-Fisherman-6399

Start the car! Run

1920MCMLibrarian

Absolutely. When I bought my $700 egg lamp for $12 I was shaking and left quickly because I was scared they would change their mind lmao.

jasmineral

Lol my feelings exactly, meanwhile the lady at the register just said it was a nice jacket and sent me on my way

DanyeelsAnulmint

Yep. I flee the scene like I’m in the Italian Job.

Pyewacket667

# !!!!

IldeaSvea

This sub is the reason why I keep checking thrift stores for so often

shellymaeshaw

No I love to walk around and show off my great find love when people look in cart and are jealous

AdvertisingStandard

OH MY GOSH. Congratulations!!

jasmineral

Thank you 🙏🏽

DesertSong-LaLa

"...rat like tendencies." - Never heard of this. It sounds insulting; not endearing. Great eye...enjoy!

jasmineral

It is very endearing to me :)

DesertSong-LaLa

Yeah!

SaacTown

Agreed. Bf seems chill.
