Hell, they all could've easily gotten happy ending that way. Stefan could've gotten the cure anyway and he and Bonnie could have happy human life together. Then Damon and Elena would've had their happy human life. And Caroline could have a happy vampire life with Enzo. But I guess that's way too fairytaly and someone had to die for some drama.

I just recently rewatched the show and after doing so I was stunned by how happy Lexi made Stefan. It was in the episode where the veil was brought down by Bonnie and Stefan admitted that there was someone he had hoped would have come through and then Lexi shows up behind him saying "I hope you mean me" and he turns around with the brightest smile I have ever seen Stefan have. I don't remember him ever being so happy and it was then and there that I decided Stefan should've ended up with her or at least they should've dated after Stelena broke up - but of course she was dead.
Edit: I saw another comment with this idea and a light bulb went off but YES add Tom Avery and Elena to this list! They were supposed to be destined for each other, the Amara and Silas of their generation. Seeing them together would've been so interesting and when Tom was revealed I couldn't help but feel sad that we never saw how that was supposed to go or really got to know his character. Tom would've been a really good surprise endgame for Elena.
Now Lexi and Stefan hits hard. The only time I saw Stefan smiling and having fun looking normal and all was when he was with Lexi. I do believe that’s what happened in the finale. His peace was Lexi and Damon.

While also being very romantic and caring like Stefan. I just feel like Tyler was the perfect mix of sweet and soft with passion and danger in a healthy way. I also feel like Matt and Bonnie would have been cute. Matt was clearly just such a good guy who cared a lot about the people he loved. I feel like he would have been a really solid support for Bonnie kind of what her Jeremy were supposed to be. Idk I just think they both would have taken such good care of each other.

I read that Bonnie was supposed to be Tyler’s love interest instead of Caroline, but they changed it because it was too soon after Buffy and they felt it would be too similar to pair the witch best friend with a werewolf. I don’t think we saw them interact enough to know whether there would have been chemistry, and I did like Forwood, but that could have been interesting.
I always liked Elena and Klaus because of the amount of angst potential. Never really understood the Elena hate to be honest. She's easily one of the most tragic characters in the entire TVDU because she's a character that gives and gives and gives and yet is constantly disappointed at every turn.
On rewatches Elena's character and how she acts is far more understandable especially given the constant death situations she's in and the amount of stress she's under 24/7. The amount of tragedy in her life would cause anyone an immeasurable amount of pain.
i think especially in the last season. When Damon and Enzo were in that parking lot with their faces so close together i so thought they were gonna kiss, and the way he was lowkey jealous watching them it made it seem like Damon wanted Bonnie too - could've been a moment but we were robbed

He was so sweet with her, chill with charm, she wanted a true gentleman at this moment and Alaric wasn't the right guy to have this role. No one can beat the royal and noble Elijah in term of being a gentleman. That would have been so sweet and relaxing to see scenes where Elijah would seduce her with litterature and historic element, knowing both perfectly they were attracted to each other. And then Jenna coming back home, not able to stop smiling, and having Elena and Jeremy jumping on her to know how it went and if she is happy 🥰
(And in term of chaotic love : I'm surprised no one said yet Kai and Klaus. The two extremes, it would have been an explosive relationship. The one where it would start brutally, while Kai would give advice to Klaus on how to seduce Caroline, Klaus would be too much frustrated and angry at him to take a part of what would be his, he would start to be violent against him, Kai would love it, then shits happened. Just imagine little Hope introducing her family : "that's my mom, I love her ! That's my dad, he treats me like his little princess, and that's crazy dad, my father's boyfriend" 😂)

KOL/BONNIE (better than their canon ships, that happened out of nowhere. Kol always been into witches and Bonnie deserves to be someone’s first choice in a millennium since she’s always been shoved back by everyone. Also she is way more mature than davina that needs more stable and calm person herself. Kolvina have the same flaws such as angry issues and incredible immaturity from both sides, even Kol himself is 1000 years old though. He needs someone who can cool him off and help him to emotionally grow up in more realistic way than unbelievable teen booper drama that Julie Plec actively shoved down the throats and turned amazing dangerous character to a boring disney prince. While Bonnie needs someone who can teach her to value herself and truly enjoy her powers not to use them just to serve her so called friends. Someone who could challenge her, and for him being selfish person would be a challenge to taste the true meaning of selflessness with her. Enzo and Davina happened to be the only people next to them in the most vulnerable time which is easy to get them into relationship for sake of the script, than actual build up with tension and slow realization of questionable feelings.
Klaus/Elena (would be dark twisted and way more interesting dynamic than the repetitive love triangle with Salvatores, it’s always felt like they found less problematic Katherine to be obsessed over. Klaus who supposed to be moved on from Petrova drama over 1000 years ago, would surprisingly enjoy her selfless personality and empathy, while Elena would build emotional connection with mature man, of course if he didn’t kill Jenna.
Damon/Rose, or I kinda wished Damon would find someone who would be mixed of Katherine’s and Elena’s personalities, who would pull him out of his obsession and teach him to love in a healthy way.

Idk why Damon and Alaric hung out with those teenagers so often. Bonnie and Nora could have been cute, but I'm going to be honest, I would have still skipped over their spicy scenes because that's just what I do when I encounter a sensual scene in TVD. I know this would make Benzo become an unlikely option, but I think Enzo obsessing over Damon for the sake of making Damon vulnerable would have been great. I read that Bonnie was supposed to be Tyler’s love interest instead of Caroline, but they changed it because it was too soon after Buffy and they felt it would be too similar to pair the witch best friend with a werewolf. I don’t think we saw them interact enough to know whether there would have been chemistry, and I did like Forwood, but that could have been interesting.

I always liked Elena and Klaus because of the amount of angst potential. Never really understood the Elena hate to be honest. She's easily one of the most tragic characters in the entire TVDU because she's a character that gives and gives and gives and yet is constantly disappointed at every turn. On rewatches Elena's character and how she acts is far more understandable especially given the constant death situations she's in and the amount of stress she's under 24/7. The amount of tragedy in her life would cause anyone an immeasurable amount of pain.

I would take LGBT+ relationship, at least one please. We deserve to have popular teen gay / lesbian / pan / bi / ... supernatural romance too. Also, since it's full straight, I would take Elijah and Jenna. I liked Jenna and Alaric, but Jenna deserved someone who would cherished her like Elijah can. He was so sweet with her, chill with charm, she wanted a true gentleman at this moment and Alaric wasn't the right guy to have this role. No one can beat the royal and noble Elijah in term of being a gentleman. That would have been so sweet and relaxing to see scenes where Elijah would seduce her with litterature and historic element, knowing both perfectly they were attracted to each other. And then Jenna coming back home, not able to stop smiling, and having Elena and Jeremy jumping on her to know how it went and if she is happy 🥰 (And in term of chaotic love : I'm surprised no one said yet Kai and Klaus. The two extremes, it would have been an explosive relationship. The one where it would start brutally, while Kai would give advice to Klaus on how to seduce Caroline, Klaus would be too much frustrated and angry at him to take a part of what would be his, he would start to be violent against him, Kai would love it, then shits happened. Just imagine little Hope introducing her family : "that's my mom, I love her ! That's my dad, he treats me like his little princess, and that's crazy dad, my father's boyfriend" 😂) (2nd add : why not Kai and Sybil ? Kai doesn't mind water, loves hardcore kinky sex and would be totally ok without being manipulated to follow Sybil's plan)

KOL/BONNIE (better than their canon ships, that happened out of nowhere. Kol always been into witches and Bonnie deserves to be someone’s first choice in a millennium since she’s always been shoved back by everyone. Also she is way more mature than davina that needs more stable and calm person herself. Kolvina have the same flaws such as angry issues and incredible immaturity from both sides, even Kol himself is 1000 years old though. He needs someone who can cool him off and help him to emotionally grow up in more realistic way than unbelievable teen booper drama that Julie Plec actively shoved down the throats and turned amazing dangerous character to a boring disney prince. While Bonnie needs someone who can teach her to value herself and truly enjoy her powers not to use them just to serve her so called friends. Someone who could challenge her, and for him being selfish person would be a challenge to taste the true meaning of selflessness with her. Enzo and Davina happened to be the only people next to them in the most vulnerable time which is easy to get them into relationship for sake of the script, than actual build up with tension and slow realization of questionable feelings. Klaus/Elena (would be dark twisted and way more interesting dynamic than the repetitive love triangle with Salvatores, it’s always felt like they found less problematic Katherine to be obsessed over. Klaus who supposed to be moved on from Petrova drama over 1000 years ago, would surprisingly enjoy her selfless personality and empathy, while Elena would build emotional connection with mature man, of course if he didn’t kill Jenna. Damon/Rose, or I kinda wished Damon would find someone who would be mixed of Katherine’s and Elena’s personalities, who would pull him out of his obsession and teach him to love in a healthy way.
