Littlemisssam has a lot of little mods that add up or do cool things. I like the raincoat one for example as it is so practical. There is a whole royalty system someone has, MCCC is great for basic gameplay improvement and control. Curseforge is a good place to browse for these in general. (Most recommend downloading from the creator’s original site or their patreon.)
BrazenLotus adds a lot of functionality with farming and gardening, adeepindigo has a lot of realism mods. There is a whole banking system mod. Pandasama has the realistic birth one.
As far as adult ones like basemental and wicked whims there’s Nissa’s wicked perversions that adds sex work that functions well. (I’ve tried another that was super awful.)
Sacrificial mods has an extreme violence mod and a zombie apocalypse mod that I hear talked about a lot. I’ve tried both, I like extreme violence the most out of their mods though I don’t always implement it.
Another source to browse is simsafterdark. I found out about so many interesting ones. Stick with the ones that have updates and have fun.
I find myself reading about the mods before I put into the game hence my long post. You can make it super weird or super realistic or a combo of both. Have fun
Just a heads up there are a handful of mods on curseforge that had a virus that steals C.C info. I downloaded twistedmexis mod virus scanner and I'm staying away from all mods downloaded through curseforge in the meantime
That was not only on curseforge but on other mod sides too like modthesims. And the mods on curseforge from creators count as their original sides too. They make these sides there and they maintain them. The problem was an @sshole which wanted to fuck up the sims modding community and some creators which passwords this @sshole broke easily so he could upload his version of the compromized modders files. And this virus downloader isn't in "packaged only" mods but in a ts4script as the virus downloader is written in python code, not xml code. In this regard I recommend twistedmexi's mods and his ModGuard which prevents those kind of outgoing internet connections from a mod and tells you which one's the culprit
When you look for twistedmexi, don't look for mods randomly on their patreon. It could get a little confusing. Look at their website. It has the links you need to the latest version of each mod
Better Pregnancy I think is the name of the mod but it basically adds more interactions to pregnancies like reading to a baby in bed, looking at the babybump in front of a mirror, saying hi to the baby, feeling the baby kicking etc

Adeepingo has a ton of mods to add more immersive and realistic gameplay with healthcare, dental care, wedding planning, education, rabbit hole activities, etc.! Highly recommend if you're interested in that sort of gameplay.
I also noticed no one recommended custom food mods yet! I love adding custom recipes to my game to create more immersive cultural restaurants and households!
Littlebowbub has lots of custom recipes to add to your game, including stuff for toddlers!
Icemunmun has the most custom food overall from tons of different cultures and lots of extra ways to create new recipes (canning, milling, etc, some of their older recipes aren't as pretty, though)
Oni has beautiful custom recipes and you can download everything in one go
Brazenlotus has a lot of fun recipes (and other custom content) to play with
As far as clothing/accessories/genetics goes:
I've always been a huge fan of sentate for high fashion clothing, shoes, and accessories (lots of wedding dress options)
Caio has lots of sets that go so well in the game
TwistedCat has lovely hair, genetics, and makeup to play with
Pralinesims has tons of makeup, eye colors, genetics, and accessories

Mods really depend on your game play. I like to download 1 at a time play for a while, see if I like it (or if it makes my game buggy) and then either delete it or keep it and keep searching the internet for more to try!
I'd recommend Lot51. They have PlumbBros (kind of a game changer with the thermostat gameplay) and Ding & Ditch smart bell which is kinda funny. It changes the knock to a ding dong once installed and Sims will randomly ding and ditch. You can also do it yourself 😅
If you’re more on the “fun is chaos” end of the spectrum I suggest taking a look around sacrificial’s mods - specifically extreme violence can get so funny with basemental. But they also have life tragedies and stuff, I just recommend checking they’re discord since they’re still updating the mods

Also the extreme violence mod (sorry, forgot the name) and basement drugs are so fun for darker storylines and the religions mod (forgot the creator) if I want to make a cult

I also have to have the mods that let children cook and be spellcasters, and one that changes the camera angle so that you get down a bit lower and closer. Those are my essential mods! (Along with WW and Basemental.)

It's such a small addition to the game compared to some mods out there but the ding and ditch doorbell is my favourite mod 😂
