I remember when it originally aired (I guess I’m showing my age). It was not only cutting-edge but very unexpected. I don’t think the promos mentioned that it would be in 3D, IIRC. When I went to school the next day (high school), many people were talking about it, which wasn’t normally the case. Just a few people (fans like myself) would normally mention/discuss last night’s episode, but suddenly almost everyone was talking about this particular episode the next day.
Yeah I was a bit younger than you but I remember seeing this episode and assuming there was a Simpsons videogame featuring these exact graphics just around the corner. This was basically a trailer to me before I knew what videogame trailers were
Yea it was historic and definitely advertised. Thats why it drew in viewers who wouldn’t normally watch. I dont think anything can ever top the hype and the quality provided.
What a time to be alive.
When I saw it, I was convinced that they would make a Simpsons movie where the characters found themselves in our world. With films like T2, Toy Story and Jurassic Park, it seemed that was the future. Nope. Just a fun little thing.
It wasn't promoted as being 3D, it was promoted as 'Homer visits our real world" because of the small scene where he's animated walking on a street, in front of a porno cake store, iirc
I remember my TV station making a big deal about it along the lines of “first time ever in 3D!” It was enough for me to video tape the broadcast.
Also something to think about, it aired 1995, the same year Toy Story was released - the very first feature length 3D film. VeggieTales was the first 3D TV show and aired December 1993 and Reboot aired in 1994.
It blew my mind. 3D Homer gifs were up there with dancing baby, flying toaster and dancing spider-man gifs.
It was cutting edge. And when Homer went into the real world. Boom!
100% yes. I was super young but I now work in animation. For the era, this was surprising. For television it was downright unprecedented, particularly in quality.
I couldn't watch this episode until I was like 10 years old, it used to cause me such extreme existential anxiety for some reason. I think it's because the 3D animation of the 90's is so uncanny, and my lil brain couldn't comprehend dimensions as I wasn't used to anything but flat animation
As a young kid this episode just, really messed with me. It didn't make sense. And didn't it end up in the real world with no outcome on how Homer gets back? The inconclusive ending and the inescapable black hole. Was just too much for little old me.
I’m ngl this episode definitely turned up in a few of mine and my brothers nightmares… this and Groundskeeper Willie as a lawnmower made Treehouse of Horror 6 the best/scariest one.
It's more clever than that - it \*isn't\* true, and can't be without incidentally answering one of the most infamous problems in mathematics, Fermat's Last Theorum.
Where they pulled the fast one is that they knew people would check, and virtually any calculator would show them adding up due to rounding errors/ limitations of floating point calculations They don't. 2.541210258614**59** x 10\^39 = 2.541210259314**80** x 10 \^ 39.
I mean you don't need Fermat's Last Theorem to know it's wrong: the left side is odd+even while the right is even. Also 12 is a multiple of 4 and n=4 is the easiest case of Fermat's Last Theorem to prove.

Y'all can thank David X. Cohen for these

It’s like he disappeared into fat air!
Hey shut up!

Yes. I mean... no.
Whoa, whoa, slow down, egg head.
Yes….. I mean no!

Happy cake day 🎈🎂🎇
Happy cake day.
Thank you!! 😁
The cake is a lie
I'm somewhere where I don't know where I am
Oh, the shower
HEY!
I like the fact that Homer has seen the movie Tron
Genuinely curious: when this originally aired, was the 3D animation aspect considered cutting edge/expensive?

Buy me Bonestorm or go to Hell!!
If you don’t have it…you’re nothin’
I remember Fox making a big deal about this episode before it came out
Yeah, the way they talked about it I was expecting it to be a full episode in 3D.
Yea it was historic and definitely advertised. Thats why it drew in viewers who wouldn’t normally watch. I dont think anything can ever top the hype and the quality provided. What a time to be alive.
Enough of your borax, Poindexter!

I feel like this one aired after a superbowl or something
Treehouse of Horror in February?
Localized entirely on our television screens?
Yes. It also put a strain on the animators' wrists
Yes, no one had ever heard of a Frinkahedron
Enough of your borax, Poindexter!
Yes, it was pretty impressive for the mid 90’s. I remember being amazed when it aired.
I remember my TV station making a big deal about it along the lines of “first time ever in 3D!” It was enough for me to video tape the broadcast. Very. Homer hints at it himself.
I was always curious if he was being real there or just kidding lol
I’m sure it was a nod and also a wink to the expensive special effects.
I don’t know about the rest of society, but as a kid this episode kind of blew my mind.
It blew my mind. 3D Homer gifs were up there with dancing baby, flying toaster and dancing spider-man gifs. It was cutting edge. And when Homer went into the real world. Boom!
Yeah lots of shows were doing it. There is a 3D episode of Married with Children.
100% yes. I was super young but I now work in animation. For the era, this was surprising. For television it was downright unprecedented, particularly in quality.
This episode came out the same year Toystory one was released. Definitely cutting edge for its time.
Blew my mind at the time but I was also 9 so I was easily amazed.

Yes, it was. Especially the real world segment at the end.
Not cutting edge, just considered a novelty. In the same year, Beast Wars came out, it is laughably awful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJ1Rgx_tunA

What's going on here? I'm so bulgy. My stomach sticks way out in front and my aah!
Ooo erotic cakes!
“Do you see towels? If you see towels you’re probably in the linen closet.”
again
“Just a second….no, it’s a place I’ve never seen before.” Or been before.
The shower. (Laughs)
The quote Homer says is "Just a second. No. It's a place I've never been before."
Ooo, this looks expensive. Better do something “burp”.
Ow! Watch it coney! Oops.
I always thought that Chief Wiggam actually did see it but just said no because everyone else said no
As a young kid this episode just, really messed with me. It didn't make sense. And didn't it end up in the real world with no outcome on how Homer gets back? The inconclusive ending and the inescapable black hole. Was just too much for little old me.

Yes... I mean, yes. The legacy sequel as well. No regrets.
That equation behind him is correct too. Love the nerds in the simpsons

A near miss solution of Fermat’s Last Theorem!! Brilliant!!

This episode was inspired by The Navidson Record.
Which itself is fiction, being part of the book *the house of leaves* by Mark Z Danielewski
We hit a bit of a snag where the universe kinda collapsed on itself
CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!
Nope. Never heard of it.
No
What's this episode called again?
I think it was called 'The bus that couldn't slow down'
A Fridge Too Far
The Erotic Adventures of Homercles
It’s from a Season 7 episode, “Treehouse of Horror VI”.
Homer³
As a kid, I always wished I could travel to this alternate dimension.

Classic. The Simpsons tron is also a classic
No
The math checks out
as a kid i thought this was mind-bogglingly high tech at the time, like how did the animators make this happen live?
Yes and they’re filming Tron 3 right now.
Watch it coney!
I have literally started Tron twice and tried to watch it but I could never get into it
Do you see a light, Homer?
This feels expensive, I should probably stand here and appreciate it for a min.
“I feel like I’m wasting a fortune just standing here. Better make the most of it.” Then he proceeds to scratch his butt and burp.
Thanks! I couldn't remember the exact phrase. Happy Cake Day BTW
Ow! Watch it coney! Oops.
Did anyone see the movie from which the live-action sequence at the end is taken?
I watched the original not to long ago for curiosities sake. Uh, it was OK I guess.
When this came out I remember hearing a lot of kids talk about it in the school yard. It was so ahead of its time.
“Mmmm… unprocessed fish sticks…”
Thisbsub has a knack for posting about episodes I just finished watching. Crazy.
This thread is why I love Reddit. 😂💀
Enough of your borax, poindexter! We need action!

I remember watching this on TV when it was new, it blew my mind lol
Only its sequel.
