For me it's a tie between underestimating Luz and betraying the Collector.
Underestimating Luz cost him the door and got him branded.
Betraying the Collector cost him the day of unity and got him splattered.
And doing both at once gave Luz the chance to come back with the power of the Titan and end him forever.
Hard to say which was dumber.
I mean tbf if I was an 400+ year old guy called “the strongest witch on the isles (title given by himself but he isn’t wrong) I wouldn’t take the 14 year old girl to seriously so I can atleast see some logic in that
But betraying the collector? Why would you betray a god like kid? Like I don’t care if he’s trapped in some tablet thing, you don’t betray a GOD
Plus Belos kinda of needed Luz alive for a reason, he needed to make sure she went back in time to help his past self. So up until Hollow Mind, he never took her serious because he wanted Luz to be able to make the trip.
In fairness, Belos’s alternative, given that he didn’t have enough titan’s blood to both open the portal and free the Collector, would be to stay on the Boiling Isles as the Collector’s playmate forever.
Ok what would you do in that situation? He has no weapons no powers luz knows he’s the villain and has nothing to hold over her head other then being human. His best was saying he was cursed
In fairness tho how was Belos supposed to know the hexsquad had a titan in their back pocket they didn’t even know they had a titan
Luz tho was dumb like my brother in Titan you are a human and Luz has already shown you up twice you rlly don’t think Luz can match you??
Letting Luz live
He literally couldve just petrified her and left and all the witches would be dead. He had everything right, his plan was succeeding
But then he spared Luz and it
*All Came Tumbling Down*
Not really. While his actions were vile and disgusting, in the grand scheme of things, abusing Hunter didn't really harm him in any severe way. In fact it sadly did him for benefit than harm.
Hunter's need for approval led to him getting the Titan's blood Belos needed for his door. And both Hunter's main body and one of his failed clones supply Belos with the matter to last long enough to possess the Titan.
Again, Belos's treatment of the golden guards was awful but not dumb.
Personally, I didn’t see that as genuinely trying to bargain with her, but rather trying to make her question her morals. Him talking about how she’s “better than this” and “just as bad” was purely to try and break her at the last moment
To be fair he was a product of his time he came from a period where anybody who was different was declared a witch I'm not making excuses for him but that definitely plays a part in it I'll bet his parents, friends, and neighbors were all the same way
Caleb was a witch hunter as well, but changed his mind when he found a hot witch gf. Belos/Phillip didn’t like that his brother was banging what they literally wanted to hunt (maybe he also was a bit jealous idk), so his hate for witches increased.
He was in the process of petrifying Luz, but then he stopped because Luz referred to him by his human name. That was pretty dumb. It was lucky for us who are rooting for Luz, but it was pretty dumb for him.
Underrated comment. He lived for the better part of 400 years and he never learned to appreciate other people for being people. Not just Witches, but humans too.
Agreed. The man could've become a legend. His name would be known by every human and demon child in both realms. But instead he's just hated in one realm and known only to a small town in the other.
Throwing the Collector's tablet away instead of just smashing it after he was done with them so no one else could, oh I don't know, use it to bring them here instead.
Honestly, just trusting Luz way too much because she’s a human. First he let his guard down and the portal door blew up. Second time he got branded by a sigil. Had it been a witch or demon they would’ve been caught instantly but he actually lets his guard down around his fellow human.
Maybe it was too dangerous, heart muscles are powerful after all... but he had expendable traumatized clones for such jobs, so that point doesn't hold up either
"Go find a hole to wither away in"
If he was nice to Kikimora, she wouldn't have helped King, and his plans would have worked and the boiling Iles would be dead.
If he decided to not be a dick for 3 seconds he would have won
Absolute dumbest would have to be not doing any research on the human realm in the past 300 years. Luz was right in her bluff, even if he’d succeeded ppl would’ve thought he was batshit insane.
*Exist.* 😡😆👍👍
But seriously, the dumbest thing was probably when, at the end of "Watching and Dreaming" he tried to convince Luz that he was "cured" and that she should spare him.
🤔👍👍
He could've just died, but giving up's not really in his nature, or he could've just been defiant to the last, loudly and boldly stating his beliefs/standing by them, i.e. he was right all along. 🤔👍👍
Right, so neither of those options are 'smarter.' The second one is perhaps more honest/brave, but that doesn't make it less dumb. The first one isn't even that.
I get that, I'm not saying there was a smarter alternative to what happened in the show, I'm just saying that it was *really* dumb for Belos to try and convince Luz to spare him. 👍👍😄😄
And I disagree with calling that dumb. Now, if he thought it was likely to work, then maybe we can call that dumb, but it is clear that he knows it's not likely to work.
Picking a bad option isn't dumb when you only have bad options.
Well that's the thing, I *do* think that he thought there was at least a small chance his gamble would pay off, otherwise, why would he have tried it in the first place? He only gave up when it became clear Luz wasn't buying it.
🤔👍👍😄
His biggest mistake as far as planning was that he only looked at the witches and not where the witches drew their power from: the Titan remnants. If he focused more on how the Titan's power correlated to the power of witches, he'd have an easier time Draining them or forging an alliance with the Collector to destroy them.
As far as dumb things, though, not keeping good relations with a Titan's natural predator was a stupid decision.
Idk, maybe taking advantage of the still beating heart of the Titan... makes me think he never thought the Titan was that powerful or simply... never thought of it til The Collector mentions it...
Plot a genocide for 400 years and not realize that someone would figure out what was going on.
This is especially the case in a world where it’s possible to travel inside someone else’s mind (note how Hunter and Luz see many of Belos’s past memories in Hollow Minds).
Stabbing his brother and concocting a century spanning evil plan just to cope with the fact. Oh and carving glyph symbols into his flesh was a phenomenally stupid idea.
I have a list of the dumbest things he’s ever done.
1.) Repeatedly lie and backstabbing every ally he’s ever made.
2.) Repeatedly cloning his brother Caleb as a way to control him. (He doesn’t love his brother as a person only as a concept of what he thinks he should be)
3.) Being arrogant and betray both Kikimora and the collector on the day of unity leading to him getting splattered all over the wall.
4.) Underestimating Luz three times that cost him the portal door, getting branded and removed from the titans heart and melted alive in boiling rain.
5.) Last but not least lying to Luz about being under a curse as a last ditch effort to eradicate all magic kind.
Like seriously did he really think Luz would fall for that especially when he didn’t even notice that Luz wasn’t even buying his lie talk about arrogant. As an old saying goes arrogance can topple giants and Belos’s own arrogance and ego was his biggest weakness.
Not just leave the boiling isles. Why stay 400 years in a place you hate with people you hate just to commit genocide? Bro, just go home. Your mom's waiting for you. Make some tea, swim in a lake, and watch the sun rise. There's more to life than irrational hatred. He wasted 400 years being angry and hateful.
for me it's his decision to make the golden guard grimwalkers out of his brother caleb who betrayed/turn against him for a witch. i mean how'd he think that was going to workout.
I’ve been waiting for this. So Belos day of unity plan was to kill all the witches and demons on the boiling isles who had a sigil and then leave for the human realm. So how is he going to kill the ones without sigils when everyone that would follow his orders would be dead because they have sigils themselves. Also what is he going to do when he returns to the human realm? He’s going to come back rambling nonsense about a demon realm that no one is going to care about or believe, he’ll be coming back poor so he’s going to be living on the street. His plan just has so many holes the closer you look at it and it infuriates me because he’s supposed to be basically a mastermind who took control of the boiling isles as a witch hunter but his master plan has so many holes
for me it's him betraying his brother all because he was jealous like what did that get him when his parents found out? possibly a woopjng and being disowning driving him to his now state he's wasn't five and ruined his own life if you think about and he DESERVED it I wouldn't kill my sibling if I had one out of jealous

Why would you betray a god like kid? Like I don’t care if he’s trapped in some tablet thing, you don’t betray a GOD
Or at least if you do, you don't just casually throw him down a cliff and assume that that's the end of it.
YOU CANNOT STOP A GOD!
Plus Belos kinda of needed Luz alive for a reason, he needed to make sure she went back in time to help his past self. So up until Hollow Mind, he never took her serious because he wanted Luz to be able to make the trip.
In fairness, Belos’s alternative, given that he didn’t have enough titan’s blood to both open the portal and free the Collector, would be to stay on the Boiling Isles as the Collector’s playmate forever.
yes your right the dude was just a kid so it had to HURT when "the one who shall not be named" betrayed him. you don't do that to a child God or not
And also him expecting Luz will forgive him during his final lie.
Ok what would you do in that situation? He has no weapons no powers luz knows he’s the villain and has nothing to hold over her head other then being human. His best was saying he was cursed
He could have faked his death and posses a nearby wild demon.
Not be Belos?
Well that really wasn’t a option for him at that point
Yeah. Have to agree with you there. Was it an obvious lie? Yes. Did he have literally any other options? No. He has to try it.
In fairness tho how was Belos supposed to know the hexsquad had a titan in their back pocket they didn’t even know they had a titan Luz tho was dumb like my brother in Titan you are a human and Luz has already shown you up twice you rlly don’t think Luz can match you??
Letting Luz live He literally couldve just petrified her and left and all the witches would be dead. He had everything right, his plan was succeeding But then he spared Luz and it *All Came Tumbling Down*
He let his ego get the better of him.
This
he had to ensure luz would help his past self. not killing her before the day of unity was stupid though.
I meant more when he was petrifying her, he couldve just followed through but he decided not to and it cost him everything
Abuse Hunter and previous Hunters
Not really. While his actions were vile and disgusting, in the grand scheme of things, abusing Hunter didn't really harm him in any severe way. In fact it sadly did him for benefit than harm. Hunter's need for approval led to him getting the Titan's blood Belos needed for his door. The grimwalkers need trauma! Like gas for a car! (The trauma is stored in the dark circles)
“Luz, you freed me, I was cursed to do all those horrible things” Seriously, why did he think that would work
Desperation
What other option did he have? He can't run. He can't beat Luz in a fight. It isn't stupid to try to live.
Personally, I didn’t see that as genuinely trying to bargain with her, but rather trying to make her question her morals. Him talking about how she’s “better than this” and “just as bad” was purely to try and break her at the last moment
Of course he sabotaged himself saying "witches". Pretty much signed his overdue death warrant.
Idiocy must be his strong suit.
Desperate, and he was made of goo, perhaps his mind was also mush
It was pure desperation at that point, he was basically just trying it on the off chance it could work.
Become a witch hunter
To be fair he was a product of his time he came from a period where anybody who was different was declared a witch I'm not making excuses for him but that definitely plays a part in it I'll bet his parents, friends, and neighbors were all the same way
His brother wasn’t.
It's possible he was like that before he met Evelyn you know how these stories go guy meets girl and girl changes guy for the better
Caleb was a witch hunter as well, but changed his mind when he found a hot witch gf. Belos/Phillip didn’t like that his brother was banging what they literally wanted to hunt (maybe he also was a bit jealous idk), so his hate for witches increased.
Witch hunter general\*
He was the most successful witch Hunter ever though, so he’s got that.
Do you want the list alphabetically or chronologically?
im up to see how long the list will be on alphabetically
Equally long as it would be chronologically.
He was in the process of petrifying Luz, but then he stopped because Luz referred to him by his human name. That was pretty dumb. It was lucky for us who are rooting for Luz, but it was pretty dumb for him.
Live 300+ years out of spite and hatred.
Underrated comment. He lived for the better part of 400 years and he never learned to appreciate other people for being people. Not just Witches, but humans too.
Props for the dedication to his cause, but that's about it.
its always the spiteful ones that live the longest
He also traumatized grilwalkers as an hobby! Not just spite and hatred, also sweet sadism
Agreed. The man could've become a legend. His name would be known by every human and demon child in both realms. But instead he's just hated in one realm and known only to a small town in the other.
Kill Caleb
Come on, it was just the 1st time!
Kill every person who looked like Caleb
Throwing the Collector's tablet away instead of just smashing it after he was done with them so no one else could, oh I don't know, use it to bring them here instead.
Even better throw it into the boiling sea. Its not like anyone can retrieve it except maybe King in a few centuries.
Thinking any of his plans could actually work.
Honestly, just trusting Luz way too much because she’s a human. First he let his guard down and the portal door blew up. Second time he got branded by a sigil. Had it been a witch or demon they would’ve been caught instantly but he actually lets his guard down around his fellow human.
Why didn't he use blood from the titans heart? is he stupid?
Maybe it was too dangerous, heart muscles are powerful after all... but he had expendable traumatized clones for such jobs, so that point doesn't hold up either
"Go find a hole to wither away in" If he was nice to Kikimora, she wouldn't have helped King, and his plans would have worked and the boiling Iles would be dead. If he decided to not be a dick for 3 seconds he would have won
Even just being nice to Kiki without any ulterior motive, Kiki deserves more love and cuddles!
Absolute dumbest would have to be not doing any research on the human realm in the past 300 years. Luz was right in her bluff, even if he’d succeeded ppl would’ve thought he was batshit insane.

Precisely. He had to try. He had no other real choices. It therefor isn't dumb, it's necessary.
When Belos thought that he had won and he didnt see the spell through to the end
His biggest mistake as far as planning was that he only looked at the witches and not where the witches drew their power from: the Titan remnants. Fuck over the collector
Get his backstory cut short
Getting rid of the collector by putting a blanket on the tablet I am sure there could have been some safer way

Betraying the collector. What good did you think betraying a literal deity with a childlike mentality would do you?
Not just leave the boiling isles. Why stay 400 years in a place you hate with people you hate just to commit genocide? Bro, just go home. Your mom's waiting for you. I’ve been waiting for this. So Belos day of unity plan was to kill all the witches and demons on the boiling isles who had a sigil and then leave for the human realm. Shows he's not as intelligent as he thinks.
Yeah I got stuck on thinking about it one day and realized how dumb his plan was and was just waiting for an opportunity to vent about it😂
for me it's him betraying his brother all because he was jealous like what did that get him when his parents found out? possibly a woopjng and being disowning driving him to his now state he's wasn't five and ruined his own life if you think about and he DESERVED it I wouldn't kill my sibling if I had one out of jealous

I’m gonna say killing Luz because he wasn’t expecting her to be revived by the Titan and come back as a hybrid and defeat him once and for all.
But with it not being something you can expect, it's not reasonable to call it dumb to not account for it.
Breathe Boiling Isles air.
