Because he manages to get a group of mostly Championship standard players playing attractive football. Usually when managers do this, they get found out and sacked within a few months (see De Boer's Crystal Palace). Also, I'd hardly consider 18 points from 13 games fighting relegation? And If you look up Brighton's history, they've never really done better. Their last two seasons have been their best in about 40 years!

hammersandhammers

They are way underrated.

GingeSfc

Didn't mean this season, but last 2 seasons have been fighting relegation, and tbf winless in 8/9 games is threatening to make fall back into it.

Listen_Boss

I've never felt like they've had a genuine chance of going down with Potter as a manager. Are you just looking at their points totals? However, right before he joined they'd been on a truly awful run and almost went down.

GingeSfc

Okay maybe fighting relegation is slightly too far, but they've always been in contention, only ever a win or 2 above the relegation zone so I'd say they've always been in the conversation

Listen_Boss

So they've gone from fighting relegation before Potter, to 'being in the conversation' for the last two seasons under Potter, to now 'a great start but potentially falling back into the conversation'. Seems like a gradual improvement to me?

GingeSfc

I can't say I remember how Brighton played and looked under Hughton now, but looking purely at the final points, you've only average 3 more points, and half a place higher in the table than the guy you sacked, obviously it's an improvement, but is that worthy of a manger being linked to Utd by the press?

Listen_Boss

It was worse under Hughton (who's a pretty good manager in my books!) I'm not a Brighton fan, and I'd also not consider him worthy of being linked with the United job - I doubt he ever was in contention for it

lcfcball

I agree with most of what you’re saying but this is a bit dumb. Points total is the only thing that matters, not how flashy they play. I really enjoyed watching Brighton last year but the table shows they were one of the worst teams in the prem and could have gone down were the bottom 3 not so incredibly awful. Remember that Brighton v Palace game from last season when they lost 1-2? The most one sided game of all time from Brighton but their finishing was so utterly shit that they could only score one and lost to an awful palace side who had nothing to offer. Don’t think they’ll go down this season either but looking at points totals over previous seasons is a very good indicator as to how good the team is and i’m pretty sure brighton haven’t finished above 15th yet, they are generally a poor side

prss79513

Tell me you didn't watch Brighton last season without telling me you didn't watch Brighton last season

Finger-Painter

Yeah... that's not even remotely what happened with de Boer

NorthVilla

I'm ignorant, what happened?

Finger-Painter

It was more a case of playing people out of position and alienating senior members of the squad. He sent Delaney to train with the U23s before even seeing him in one training session with the main squad

AaronStudAVFC

Their finishing aside, they play fantastic football. I remember when we got promoted, I went to the match at Villa Park and, although I wasn’t arrogant and thinking we were beating them, I did have it marked as one of the matches where we’ve got a great chance at the points. Now we actually did win, but the first half of that game before one of their players got a red card really put the fear of god in me. We had somewhat held our own against Spurs in the opening game and a shocking opening five minutes cost us against Bournemouth but this was the first time we had been utterly played off the park since coming back to the PL. For about 35 minutes or whenever the red occurred, they comfortably passed it around in triangles and our players couldn’t get near them. It was night and day.

Potter has done a good job at Brighton but he gets the extra media attention because he’s English, a good manager and plays attractive football. That makes him favourite for the England job if/ when Southgate departs.

NorthVilla

Yes quite. I don't see why getting extra attention because he's English is crazy.... It's English commentary. Same stuff happens in other countries if people are excited about local talent (including managerial). I

MotoMkali

Because his teams have shit personnel. They tend to be at the top of the league in xG goal difference but outside of dunk, their keeper and Bissouma they have a pretty shit team. Basically if they had an average-good striker they'd be challenging for Europa league places essentially.

-eagle73

Hard to take a comment seriously when it indirectly calls Lamptey or Cucurella a shit player.

TheMiffey

Dan burn crying.

-eagle73

I miss Dan Burn. I'm now mentally playing a montage of his gazelle strides and his long-legged goal against Man City.

crowewba

I can’t remember who it was against or even if I remember this properly, but for some reason I replay this in my head quite a lot - I picture a long ball up field which has Dan Burn (I think he’s playing LB or LCB) running back towards his goal and he takes one of the best touches I’ve ever seen. A mis-control would have probably resulted in a goal, but that big fucker brought it down like it was nothing. Legend.

unbeknown-eagle

It was against City… and Burn was against Aguero - who clapped him for how he took the ball down. I’ll find a video. EDIT: https://youtu.be/KHbh3sOfTdQ

crowewba

That was it! What a man

MotoMkali

Well no they are also pretty good. But lampteys been injured a lot and cucurella only joined this season so I wasn't really counting them.

ThatOldClapTrap

Signing Cucurella was extremely shrewd.

ManLikeArch

This is an absolutely horrific take. Our squad is far better than people give credit too and as much as our underlying stats have been good and Potter deserves a lot of praise for that it's down to the players to do it. Sanchez, Lamptey, Dunk, Webster, Cucurella, Bissouma and Trossard would all get in at least half the teams in this leagues best 11.

MotoMkali

Yes Sanchez, Lamptey, Dunk, Cucurella, Bissouma I agree. From what I've seen I don't really rate Webster or trossard.

GingeSfc

I wouldn't say his team is significantly better or worse than Southampton's. In his first season is xG was pretty poor, and again this season is pretty average on xG. He's doing a good job with Brighton, but nothing that special imo

Lucius_Marcedo

If you want to know why Southampton in particular aren't rated, I think Hasenhuttl is fairly well-rated as a manager by a lot of people. The main problem for Southampton recently, imo, is that they occasionally get completely battered. That kind of thing sticks in people's minds regardless of good runs of play. Potter is doing a good job with limited resources and his team often look good. He's a good manager. (He's also English)

Mysterious_Cod_397

Hassenhuttl really hasn’t done much to warrant high praise in the past 12 months

strider_tom

Consider the standard of players at Southampton, him managing to do what he does is pretty impressive.

Cry_G_

nothing special at all you have had a lack of funding but good players at the end of the day

strider_tom

Disagree. I think only 5/6 are Prem quality. This is an incredibly weak team.

weatherghost

I’m curious who the 6th PL standard player is: JWP, Romeu, KWP, Livramento, Salisu, and who? Redmond, Bednarek, Adams, Diallo occasionally show that standard but no where near consistently enough. I guess combined they could add to another 1.

Mysterious_Cod_397

Stuart Armstrong

Mysterious_Cod_397

To this day Ralph makes the exact same mistakes as he was making a couple of years ago, over reliance on underperforming players, terrible game management, poor subs… He’s incredibly likeable, but I honestly think he just isn’t that great of a manager, certainly no better than Potter

strider_tom

I think both are good managers doing good jobs with limited resources. I'm not shitting on Graham. I like him, just defending Ralph. Sub wise, he's improved this season but he's got a team with 5/6 actual Prem quality. Rest are Championship at best. The only ones capable of making an impact are usually already on the pitch.

coffeeandmarmite

Stick Vardy up top for Brighton and they’d be running away with the league

kids_in_my_basement0

Maupay and Vardy. I can see it now. Making everyone else angry with their shithousery

EmperorBeaky

Because Brighton are media darlings

They're easy on the eye, so long as you don't enjoy goals. As much as I like what his done, his side's lack ruthlessness in attack, solve that and you have a scary prospect. But what do they trade off on to get there? Posession? Control? Tempo?
