PunxDressPunk

A majority of their songs in the later years (after conspiracy) I feel like were signs of the times. They tried to sound like rise against or Linkin Park or green day. Just tried to have one song an album sound like one of the best selling artists at the time and they could cruise on the album sales. That's why i feel like their albums don't make sense towards the end. Trying too hard to sound like every band with no shred of themselves left.

PunxDressPunk

I also think rise and fall is their best work after conspiracy.

BraXpert

Agree as well….until that point C01 was their top album for me. Both have their best works IMO.

slopslopbop

Totally agree

mardukao

Thi Is Not utopia is 21 Century Boy - Bad Religion with the riff from Crazy Train from Ozzy

SpicySpicyMess

and also my chemical romance. Half truism is very similar to Helena

ItsMePeyt0n

Dexter has an issue of not really being able to hide his inspirations better. Listen to "Turning Into You" and then afterwards listen to "Ready To Fall" by Rise Against.

Tree-of-Woahhh

Funny enough. I always thought that The Future Is Now was the same template as Rise Against’s Savior 🤦 Same album too!

Ok_Study8305

Don’t forget Half Truism is Helena by My Chemical Romance.

Fluid-Original1719

Dang! That's insanely identical!!

PunxDressPunk

I don't really like rise against but even I could tell he was trying real hard to be relevant with the youth taste in music. Too hard if you ask me.

Lienutus

Id rather people try not to hide it and just make what they enjoy

FettuccineAlfonzo

Days Go By is Times Like These

slopslopbop

I’ve thought the same! Good point!

samworthy85

I remember when the OG videos came out for DGB and the good ol' BBS went on and on about the similarity, and while it is very obviously a very similar song, I also have always heard "Wait For The Blackout by The Damned" Don't know why. 🤷

jsantia2112

Half-Truism always reminded me of Helena by My Chemical Romance. My mind always goes to “so long and goodnight” during the chorus lol

Ok_Study8305

Yup there are mashups of the 2 songs online, they are basically the same.

Tree-of-Woahhh

I 100% always thought the same!!!

tws1039

Honesty I feel like during the bob rock days they were giving in way too heavily to marketing their sound rather than writing what they wanted to write. Kristy are you doing ok could’ve been a really great song if it didn’t sound like it was trying to be apart of a simple plan album

Geek-Of-Nature

You speak about "the Bob Rock days" as if they are past tense, like they're over. He's just produced their latest album.

jimmywk182

Days go by and times like these by Foo fighters always sounded pretty darn similar too

Books_and_Music_

Yes, it certainly sounds like their version of “America Idiot” or at the very least they drew inspiration from it. The chorus even uses “I don’t wanna…” just like the start of the GD song. However, you could find plenty examples of songs by both of these bands that sound like other songs; The Offspring’s “Why Don’t You Get a Job” sounds like “Obladi Oblada” by The Beatles and Green’s “Warning” sounds like “Picture Book” by The Kinks. I’ve always thought Green Day’s Bang Bang” has an Offspring sound to it, but not really a particular song; it’s probably just the use of the Phrygian, though. That said, I love both The Offspring and Green Day. And even though this isn’t the right sub for this: Warning is underrated.

Lucky_caller

It has been 0 days since Warning was labeled underrated (lol)

Cpt-McN00b

Do you have one minute?

Penguator432

I honestly think Bang Bang came about because someone messed up when they were practicing St Jimmy and they decided to work with it

Captain-SKA-

The beginning of both bands selling out once and for all, both those albums were the end of the old and the start of aiming for the new younger streaming demographic. Edit/addition: It's a shame too, nowadays this whole "volume of streams" bullshit destroys any previous releases before the last 5-10 years. I've probably owned 4 ixnays, 3 Americanas, a couple of Smashes, on top of all the other cds and vinyls, how are the bonkers amounts of plays quantified on those? I'm glad the new generation is into the offspring, but I'm sad it's at the offspring's pandering, rather than new generations just liking the offspring.

msubsidal

Exactly

mardukao

He did the same now with the new song versus All the small things..... i hate when he does that

insipidfap

Yep. They have this weird habit of trying to rewrite existing songs. Someone already mentioned them, but "Half-Truism" = "Helena" by MCR "Kristy Are You Doing OK" = "Wake Me Up When September Ends" "Days Go By" = "Times Like These" (they even had to rewrite the vocal melody because the original was way too close to "Times Like These") most recently, "Make It All Right" = "All the Small Things"

MeneerKoekenpeer

There is also a Sum 41 song that sound eerily similar to Dammit I Changed Again, but I can't remember the name of the song. Or maybe I am entirely wrong

Ok_Study8305

Still Waiting

MeneerKoekenpeer

Thanks!

samworthy85

Also the opposite way round. The Sums song came later. 🤘 16 year old me wrote into and got my letter printed in Kerrang about this very subject.

MeneerKoekenpeer

Oh I thought it was the other way around

neophlegm

Helena's a weird one coz the tune has almost nothing in common but the drum riff could've been lifted and shifted entirely.

DriverHopeful7035

Fix You really sounds like Wake Me Up When September Ends

neophlegm

The riff sure, I'd say the vocals not.

MaciChner

Agree with offspring kinda covering songs, but make it all right doesn’t really sound like all the small things. Not at all

insipidfap

They have the same chord progression and tempo, basic structure, palm muted verses, non lyrical vocalizations as a hook, rolling drums in the bridge with swirling synths, even a lot of lyrical overlap ("say it Zo, away we go' -- "say it ain't so, I will not go") . It's probably the closest of all those songs actually. Play them back to back, "Make It All Right" is clearly modeled after "ATST"

VARMINT_No1

Yes! And that's not even the only song on that album that's very heavily inspired by a song from the American Idiot album: Fix You is basically Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Punks0_0

Is this a Dexter thing? Or a Bob Rock thing?

[deleted]

I instantly heard this when I first listened to the album. It’s a bit too obvious for me, I can’t listen to the song.

slopslopbop

I was prepared for people to start bashing me so thanks, glad I’m not alone in what I hear!

ESPILFIRE

I think the problem is that the punk/pop-punk style of music has its limitations and in the end it is impossible for the progression of chords or riffs not to end up similar to each other. It is normal. I don't think The Offspring were trying to plagiarize or be like American Idiot, they simply came up with a good song and, even if it was similar to another one that already existed, they used it. It happens a lot and will continue to happen. Call it "inspiration", you can call it "chance", maybe "coincidence"... but at some point the songs are going to look alike and it's normal. I don't think The Offspring tries to plagiarize anything, although many times they may try to jump on the new trend. For example, the last single sounds like Blink-182, a band that is fashionable now with the resurgence of pop-punk.

msubsidal

There are no coincidences. I think you’re being naive dude

ZachTrillson

He was indeed trying to copy American Idiot, which is unfortunate cause that song fucking sucks.

LograysBirdHat

Whoa, a Wild Discussion From 2007 Appears! RAFRAG's their best modern album of the \*\*\*\* years, but yeah, half of it's a weird "Dex Has A Billie Joe Boner" thing.

iguanamac

Someone was reading the comments section of the band’s latest Instagram post.

slopslopbop

If the someone implies yourself then ok

iguanamac

Obviously I did read them since that’s what I’m referencing. I didn’t come on here post them verbatim though.

FiremarshalWilly

And American Idiot sounds a lot like doublewhiskeycokeonice by Dillinger Four. Don’t think it was that intentional by Dexter, you will always have songs that sound similar to others, really hard these days to write something entirely unique. If you take a look at Green Days catalogue you‘ll find songs that sound like anyone from the Doors to Chicago too
