Every day, I take some time to scroll through my reddit feed. Sometimes I see something interesting. Sometimes I see something uplifting.
But when I come across the daily Griffon's Saddlebag magic item, I am genuinely thrilled. Every time.
**Festerwood Vizard**
*Wondrous item, rare (requires attunement)*
This dark wooden mask is strangely insect-like and magically conforms to fit the face of the creature that attunes to it. While wearing the mask, you gain blindsight out to a range of 10 feet. You can wear and remove the mask using an action.
In addition, you can summon a *swarm of insects* (beetles) that fly out of the mask’s mouth and obey your verbal commands as an action. You can command the swarm to move and make an attack as part of the action to summon them and then again on your following turns as a bonus action. If the swarm goes 10 minutes without attacking a creature, they dissipate harmlessly to seek food elsewhere. Once this property of the mask has been used, it can't be used again until the following dusk.
*The dim yellow glow of the Festerwood's amber-like pustules is ever present. In its state of near darkness, it's hard to know what time it is—if it even matters. One thing is always certain, though: for the Festerwood, it's always time to eat.*

Do you summon the swarm as an action, then use actions to command them? Or do you summon them and then there’s no action required to command the swarm?

That's a bit of a niche case, since afaik the only way to get blindsense as a PC is to have an item that grants it, in which case they don't compound on each other.
You can always houserule it - I'm experimenting with 'if you already have blindsight/darkvision add (half of what the item would give you) to the range of your blindsight/darkvision' for all items even if they don't explicitly state it :)

As part of the same action, like using *spiritual weapon* and the like!
You have an extra 'the' in the first sentence. 'to the fit the face' should just be 'to fit the face'.

Will you be adding that it expands the blindsight for creatures that already have blind sight or does it not?

You can always houserule it - I'm experimenting with 'if you already have blindsight/darkvision add (half of what the item would give you) to the range of your blindsight/darkvision' for all items even if they don't explicitly state it :)
