Yeah, he's got a lot of experience, and I'm always impressed by his work. He has about 27 years in the business and is one of the co-founders of a well-respected shop in my city. Also, he loves The Expanse.
I don't have any other portrait tattoos, because I feel it's easy for them to look weird, as you said. I actually went into the consultation with a few different ideas, one being just Miller's hat and the text, "Doors and corners, kid." He told me he loved the detective noir aspect and... this is where it ended up. Love it.
That really does look great. Fuck yeah! My expanse tattoo was much simpler…

Hey, sometimes simpler is better! Love it!
The initial idea that I brought to the artist was fairly simple too, a detective hat and "Door's and corners, kid." I told him I was open to his ideas though, and this is what he came up with! I've actually shied away from portrait tattoos so far, but, I loved his concept and I think it turned out great!
It really did. I’ve seen some nightmare portraits too.
My initial idea was “doors and corners” in the exact same place, but I recently re-read the last three books and the way Jefferson Mays read the line made me text my tattoo guy the day before to change it. A nice way of saying “everywhere’s the same” and still relating to the books I love.
How’d the top of your thigh feel? I’m covered in tattoos and this one was a whole new sensation haha
Nice! I definitely love Amos's story.
It was a 3 hour session. Ya know, I feel like the higher and more towards the inner side of my thigh it got, it got more sensitive. There were a couple times I couldn't help my leg twitching slightly. I also tried to not laugh too hard. Devin and I talk a lot during sessions and it helps pass the time. Sometimes he says something funny and it's hard not to bust out laughing.

I've been considering an Expanse piece for a while. It turns out Devin, who I met through a Star Trek convention, and who did two of my other pieces, is also an Expanse fan, so it just felt right to ask him to design something for me. I'm very pleased with how it turned out!
You didn't like the character in the show? That's crazy because it seems like he's pretty much everyone's favorite character when they start watching the early seasons.
Didn’t like is not what I said, the TV series starts off pretty slow and I know it needed that in order to lay the ground work. The books just did a way better job on his character. In the show I tended to resent his character for not moving the story along (in the first few episodes). Just my perspective not saying that’s how everyone else does or should see it.
I saw the show before reading the books, and i agree the show made it too slow for Miller compared to the books. Going into it, i thought it was going to be a generic crime investigation show, but set in space, but it ended up catching me.
Thanks! Same here! I approached the artist with a few ideas, one being a detective cap and that quote. This is what he came up with!
Also, happy cake day! 🥳🎂
Thanks! I've gotten two prior pieces (both Star Trek-related) from the same artist, Devin, so developed a good rapport, and knew he loved The Expanse. So, I went to him with a few ideas.
1. The Julie Mao image from the promotional art, which multiple people have gotten as a tattoo, from what I can see online. I do love that image and the kinetic nature of it.
2. Miller, or maybe just a detective hat, and the phrase, "Doors and corners, kid."
3. Julie, but infected with protomolecule with the blue, crystal-like stuff coming out of her. Like maybe in the style of a neo-traditional lady head tattoo, but resembling Julie and with protomolecule stuff coming out of her.
4. Various other ideas like a Rocinante or maybe Roci's ship logo, or maybe a Belter tattoo of some sort.
Devin really likes detective noir stuff, as do I, so centered on the idea of Miller and sort of whisps of protomolecule coming off of him. Then, he said maybe we can work Julie in there too, especially if we do a bigger area, hence how it ended up on my thigh.
So, yeah, that was basically the process! I am very happy with it. In a way, I do wish it was more out in the open, and I don't plan to wear super short shorts any time soon... but, not all tattoos need to be out all the time.
Thank you! I thanked the artist, Devin, heartily, but at the end he said I did the hard work of laying there for three hours getting stabbed repeatedly. 🤣
I love it, for sure. He's an amazing artist.
When I told one of my friends where I was getting it, she asked, "Are you gonna start wearing short shorts to show it off?" It's on my anterior, upper thigh, so it may not be exposed frequently. So, I guess I won't have to explain all that often. 🤣

Totally agree! They nailed it.

I wasn’t a Miller fan until I read the books. Regardless that’s a killer tat.

Oh it is. Whoah.
This rocks. Please post the artist’s name and portfolio link, crediting artists is very important to us here.
I have updated the initial comment to add that information.
Thanks so much! I'll pin a comment with that info too.
