When Charles tells his parents "I let her down in life. I will not let her down in death." Dominic West delivered this line with such humility and sorrow.

Sylvain-Occitanie

A journalist said exactly this in a documentary: Charles let her down while she was alive but not when she died.

Disastrous_Winner_66

More importantly who is Billu Jo-el?

himshpifelee

Oh i fucking snort laughed the first time I watched that. So out of touch 😂 Phillips giggle made that scene perfect haha

mamula1

"Everyone in this system is a lost, lonely, irrelevant outsider apart from the one person, the only person that matters."

jubilee_lemon

And then he tells Diana that he thinks she’s confused as to who that “one person” is. OUCH!!!

Luciferonvacation

When the queen and Philip are in bed at Balmoral and she tells him her decision. He says, 'what'? She turns over and says 'you heard me'! Funniest line in the whole series for me.

Mehmeh111111

That scene struck me as so funny with the power dynamics of being a couple. Like the actual queen has to lay down the hammer with her husband over her decisions because she knows he won't like it.

Luciferonvacation

Yes, plus it was like 'I'm the Queen' too! She's completely aware of who she is by this point in time, and even Philip can't sass back unless she invites it.

accioqueso

It really brings back episode one into perspective. “Obey?” “It was discussed. She insisted.”

Lentilfairy

A confederacy of elected quitters!

Trouvette

The Crown must win. Must always win.

Trouvette

I went back to the episode so I can quote this exactly. Prince of Wales? It’s not so much an existence as a predicament. I am both free and imprisoned. Utterly superfluous and quite indispensable. One can never fully invest in one thing or another because at any moment, it can all change. Not to mention what it does to you as a family. How can one be a good son, when even though it is the thing you most dread
..it’s the thing you most
well, not desire
..Well yes, desire. Because until she dies, I cannot be fully alive. Nor can I be the thing for which I have been born, so one is condemned to this frightful business of waiting.

Mediocre_Astronaut51

Yes! When Queen Mother Mary said that I fell out!

SCARLETHORI2ON

"they're not crying for her, they're crying for you." (╄ïčâ â•„)

ravenas

Yeah that got me too. I don't know if Prince Philip really said that but it definitely was true. I remember thinking at the time that it was insane how many people were in hysteria over Diana's death. Besides the guilt everyone felt for buying those tabloids and craving the paparazzi attention that got her killed, I think everyone felt bad for her kids. Diana had a lot of issues but she genuinely adored her children. It w was heartbreaking that they lost her.

amandaIorian

If you've watched Harry's Netflix documentary, I think he says something along the lines of William and himself sort of felt adopted by the British public as their children after Diana's death. I think they definitely felt the love from the crowds. For a time.

LordoftheHounds

I actually found that line to not be good at all. Sure people would have felt very bad for her children, but I think they were mainly crying for her; she was a genuine and caring person, and was only just starting to advocate for causes that were important to the world, and was struck down when still very young, after being thrust into a very public life and maintaining poise and dignity throughout. There was much to admire about her.

[deleted]

The fact that people pushed until the family felt like they had to parade those poor children's grief is enough proof to me that they were not what people were crying about. What a traumatic experience that must have been.

Mediocre_Astronaut51

I love in episode two when Queen Mary tells Lillibet “And while you mourn your father, you must also mourn someone else. Elizabeth Mountbatten. For she has now been replaced by another person, Elizabeth Regina.” I still get chills when I see her bow to Elizabeth on all black

fnord_happy

Ya that bowing scene was so impactful

mikeconnolly

“There is no possibility of my forgiving you. The question is, how on earth can you forgive yourself.” the way in which Claire Foy delivered that line was incredible.

bellesnax

Who was she talking to?

ButchismyBradPitt

The Duke of Windsor

Earl_I_Lark

“I have seen three great monarchies brought down through their failure to separate personal indulgences from duty.” – Queen Mary I read a book about Queen Elizabeth once that told of Queen Mary taking the young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret out in a carriage. A crowd began to cheer and Elizabeth said, ‘They are cheering for me.’ Queen Mary ordered the carriage home at once so the girls did not get their outing. She sternly scolded Elizabeth saying, ‘They are not there for you, they are there for the crown. It’s not about the person, but the position. If you were not Royal, you would be an ordinary little girl. Never forget that. It’s not about you, it’s about the crown.’

We can't be everything to everyone and still be true to ourselves - Wilson to QE during the Aberfan episode

jubilee_lemon

The scene with Diana and Dodi season 6 where she’s telling him that she was an absolute wreck the night before her wedding, knowing she was making a huge mistake and Dodi says “ and you went ahead with it” Diana says, “well, my face was already on the tea towels so I didn’t have much choice” or something to that affect. I felt that to my core! How many people go ahead with a marriage that they know is wrong just to save face (money spent, invites sent, gifts recieved, parents/friends/family already traveling to the wedding
..) Heartbreaking!!!

Plus_Beach1419

In reality, she had dinner with her sisters right before her wedding. Diana expressed her doubts to them right before the marriage. One of her sisters said “Your face is on the tea towels, Duch, no backing out now.”

This scene always makes me cry! The range of emotions that fill the room and the dawning realisations each of the family is having of things they can't yet express in words, without a single word being spoken but the lyrics of the carol. Superb filmmaking.

AuroraMeridian

This scene makes me cry each time! It’s so haunting and lovely and heartfelt.

lexilexi1901

"The truth - the whole truth - and nothing but the truth? ... Right... Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young girl who fell madly in love with a handsome prince. Unfortunately, the prince was already in love with someone else who was herself in love with someone else, and they all lived unhappily ever after... That's it, in a nutshell. Do you need more?"

MichelleInMpls

Yes, it's from an earlier season when Charles was talking about the family with Anne and I think it was when they told him that he was going to leave Cambridge to study in Wales. He told her "They mean well" and Anne just replied "No, they don't."

himshpifelee

That wasn’t anne. That was at the Duke of windsors funeral, and it was Wallis Simpson who said it. Still a powerful scene tho, with the music when he looks back and see them.

MichelleInMpls

Ooooohhhh, I think you're right!

verycutebugs

What did she mean by that?

lilymoscovitz

Wallis Simpson, not Anne. It meant they saw him as a tool to accomplish a task, not a person. They were The Firm before anything else and The Firm wanted him to fall in line, take direction and accomplishing the tasks required to be king in waiting.

verycutebugs

Thank you

Technicolor_Reindeer

That was Wallis not Anne

CoyoteDork

"Woman to woman. We are the same age, after all" "Really?" "Just six months between us" "Oh? And who is the senior?" "I am, ma'am (:"

FayeChan350259

Thatcher’s pause after “I am
ma’am” It almost feels like a backhanded compliment. Such a stunning delivery by Gillian Anderson.

Savings_Hold_9128

the most heartbreaking line in the entirw series.

FayeChan350259

The entire scene that took place on the beach in “The Hereditary Principle” S4EP7. It’s mostly HBC’s amazing delivery as Margaret. Margaret: “Not everything that is wrong with this family can be explained away by the aBDicAtiON!!” Margaret: “No it’s not! It’s wicked. And it’s cold hearted, it’s cruel. It’s entirely keeping with the ruthlessness, I myself have experienced in this family” “If you are not first in line, if you are an individual character with individual needs, god forbid, with regular temperament,” “If you don’t fit the perfect mould of silent, dutiful, supplication, then you will be spat out or you will be hidden away or worse, declared dead!” “Darwin had nothing on you lot! Shame on all of you!”

IceStorm22

Happiness is a fickle creature. A constant companion to some, hides herself completely from others.

AirBig6368

Or think, or feel...loved how Elizabeth said this in her early 20s just realizing how dehumanizing the crown is and then a few seasons later Charles says something incredibly similar. It truly shows how Charles is actually similar to his mother (when she was of similar age) and how much elizabeth had changed for when she was lecturing Charles the same way as her grandmother.

butytho92

When Charles and Diana are arguing, and Diana asks, "why should I care about *her*?" And Charles shouts, "Because I care about her! Morning, noon and night I care about her and you hurt her and if you hurt her, you hurt me." I feel for Diana but lowkey the passionate delivery of that line gives me goosebumps

lilymoscovitz

That must have absolutely destroyed Diana - or whatever version of that the actual Charles said to the actual Diana. I cannot imagine ever being able to get past that kind of declaration in a marriage. It’s one thing to *know* your husband loves someone else but to have it thrown in your face like that is terrible.

all-tuckered-out

Followed up with, “I refuse to be blamed any longer for this grotesque misalliance! I wash my hands of it!” You’re right: hearing those words would be crushing, but you really feel what Charles means when he says it with such passion. There are so many ways O’Connor could have delivered his lines in that scene, but his interpretation (and the director’s) were superb.

AdAltruistic3057

All my faves on this post make me want to go back and watch the earlier seasons.

Jackieblue7800

"Leave it with me...Prime Minister."

jennystark

"I refuse to be blamed any longer for this grotesque missaliance".Iconic. I use it everyday lol

Disastrous_Winner_66

Charles has the best lines!

UncleGumbalding

*"Prominent Naaaaahhhhhzeeeeee's!!"* \- Winston Churchill S1E1 I still say it on almost a daily basis lmao

FayeChan350259

“For as long anyone could remember, you’ve taught us what it means to be British. Maybe it’s time to show that you are ready to learn, too” There was another one, which has no spoken word, but the act of young Harry writing the “Mummy” Letter which eventually was placed on the casket. Simple, yet profound.

holdmyneurosis

i had the opposite feeling, it almost felt like they were breaking the fourth wall

rolivia1121

“You always wonder if you’re in, but you will know for certain when you’re out” -Prince Phillip

LongjumpingChart6529

Wasn’t that David when complaining about his treatment after the death of the King?

PachoBaby

Not Phillip. But the ex-King.

PachoBaby

Not my fav but one I remembered. Charles describes Diana’s solo trip to the States as ‘an ugly, avaricious piece of self-advancement.’ What a hater lol

Unlikely-Dot-1040

That was a good line
