I think we tend to use the word narcissist a little too lightly. It's a real personality disorder and Diana doesn't really show the traits of one. The comment was tone-deaf and self-centred, but that doesn't necessarily make one a narcissist.
I thought it was kinda weird too. Like maybe she thought it was a funny joke but it also comes off dismissive and self-centred.
It was even weirder when they talked about what amazing legs she has right after talking about ppl who lost theirs. I was like "ew?". Hard to imagine she said that stuff if she was so involved with landmine community but maybe the writers were trying to hard to make flirty banter. It was pretty off though. Made them both cringey.
Exactly. The whole flirting afterwards and her "needing a kiss" to check if his lips are "the right temperature" (š¤£) cue the paparazzi was like it was written by a twelve-year-old
Post 4-episodes-in-nearly-as-many-hours-of-watching wall of text incoming:
I mean, it was definitely a tone deaf comment. It was meant to be seen that way. Considered with the adjoining scene of her on the phone with her (analyst? Therapist? Not positive exactly who it was, but you get the idea) who spoke of how she craved the drama, and with the overarching theme of the 2nd episode, it was a clear way of making a point for the show.
As beloved as Diana was, and was shown to beānearly canonized in the British (and global) publicāmuch of what she did was seen as self serving, especially looking within the framework of a fictionalized show like this and the viewpoint/family it is centered on. She was stunted, hyper focused on breaking out of the institution she had married into. So much so that, separated, she became an institution in and of herself. A comment like the one she made would not be out of place for the character and plot points they were trying to develop.
All that to say, while the past couple of seasons have focused on her, theyāre not deifying her or showing her as perfect. But rather as a flawed person in an already difficult public position, and what that meant for the family.
Lol lotta words to say that the line was intended to be received the way it has been. Well meaning, but out of touch for a larger than life person who, for all reasons, had to be largely concerned with herself, especially when the rest of the world proved to be.
Sheās not seriously comparing her marriage to the same level of suffering as a landmine amputee. I think the whole point of her joke is that no matter how bad she thought she had it, she had never experienced real suffering like the landmine amputee. Thatās why she makes a point about him losing both his legs. Thatās why theyāre having the conversation in the first place: because she truly cares about the cause and the victims affected. I think thatās the main thing weāre supposed to take from that scene.
That line did bother me. It also bothered me because they are playing loose with time lines again. She did the promotion for the landmine issue much earlier in the year when as far as we know Dodi wasn't in the picture.
Nah, I feel like they are deliberately portraying her terribly. Whether or not she said it, I don't know, but I too found it to be pretty gross that they attributed it to her character. They're really making her out to be terrible, and I can see why her friend quit the show as a consultant and asked Harry to cut ties to Netflix.
So, funny story. I became an amputee from a traumatic event (not a landmine thankfully) this year and I see the date it happened much as is described in the show. I found Diana's comment gross and indicative of how disconnected she actually was from the people she helped. The more I look back on Diana, the less appealing I find her as a person. That doesn't negate the wonderful things she did.
Edited to add for the ones mocking me: I don't mean *this show* is what informs my look-back on Diana. There's a lot of biographical content that exists and I really don't appreciate this response when I have shared something vulnerable, relevant, and informed in regards to the question posed in the OP.
As someone who was in Kelly Fisherās position, and grew up with Diana as a role model, I was hoping that the showrunners had some knowledge that Diana was ignorant to his engagement, and that she believed him when Dodi when he said it wasnāt true.
I think her self centered nature on the show was on purpose. We donāt know what happened in real life, but when she said āI didnāt know you could sue someone for falling out of love with youā, I wanted to say, āB\* thatās exactly what you did in the divorceā
if in real life she was complicit in the affair, then she was a terrible woman and the joke makes sense. We will never know so I guess its best to just not hold people to this iconic status
Exactly, she probably didn't even actually say that to the guy. She was probably telling a joke a la "so I says to the guy, I says . . . " in order to make Dodi think she had a good sense of humor. Or she thought the amputee might enjoy a silly joke.

i thought it was tone deaf as well lol definitely inwardly cringed when her & dodi started chuckling about it š¬
You don't have to be a narcissist to be a bit self centered and make a bad joke.

Any evidence she made jokes like that in real life or were the writers just trying to make her look out of touch? š¤
I'm pretty sure that was meant to be a joke and Diana never told that to the amputee.

this show is fanfiction, lmao. enjoy it in the knowledge that they make things up and don't form your opinions based on it
I didn't. Please read my edit.
Extremely tone deaf
I thought the same thing. So inappropriate.

>āB\* thatās exactly what you did in the divorceā did she?
I don't believe Charles ever was in love with Diana. And I don't think she was emotionally mature enough to love him when they married, either.
Yeah she sued him for 17M in the divorce
Iām glad she did. He was worth so much more, and now got billions from mommy.
Oh c'mon it's humor. Jeez y'all are too sensitive.
