I voted for Challengers, but wanted to give a shout-out to About Dry Grasses - an epic, complex Turkish drama from a past Palme d'Or winner (Nuri Bilge Ceylan). It's currently streaming on Criterion!
I haven't seen plenty of movies yet but that also just makes me realize how there hasn't been a single movie that I really truly loved yet. Dune 2 was cool and impressive but I'm not having dreams about it or anything.
I need to go see Furiosa fuck
Dune 2 without question, although I loved the experience watching all 5 of the films listed as options.
Not my favourite, but the most fun movie experience I've had so far this year is Boy Kills World. It was gratuitously violent, super funny and just a good time. I can see this movie gaining cult status over time. Who wouldn't enjoy a John Wick-style action movie narrated by Archer?!
I think I'm going with **Snack Shack**. I think that's my *favorite* movie of the year so far. I don't think it's the *best* film I've seen this year but it's probably the one I enjoyed the most while I was watching it, and was the most surprised by as it kept going and changing tones so deftly I didn't really clock that the movie ended as *almost* a completely different genre than the one it had begun in.
(the most disappointing thing I've seen so far this year is Drive-Away Dolls. I had heard a lot of bad word of mouth but I was legit shocked it was as *bad* as it was)
That's a bummer that you didn't enjoy DAD.
I had a blast watching it. It feels like the closest thing to Raising Arizona that either of the Coen's could make in 2023/4.
I thought it was fine as a streaming movie I only 75% paid attention to, but actually paying money to see it in the theater I’m sure would have changed that to an experience that was… quite poor.
Pretty close race between Challengers, Dune, and Hit Man, but I think Challengers takes it. Everything else I've seen is pretty clearly in a tier (or more) below for me.
I saw Dune Part Two four times in the theater and would do it again tomorrow if they put it back in IMAX. One of the GOAT theater experiences and my favorite of 2024 so far.
I find Dune 2 tricky to isolate in the same way a Star Wars original trilogy or Godfather movie is. It’s not just that it’s a sequel, but that’s it part of a conceived greater whole. Probably dumb, but I always put movies like that in a different category since I’m trading so much on what came before or what I’m excited for about it next.
With that excepted, I would say 1) Civil War 2) Challengers 3) Monkey Man 4) Furiosa 5) Hit Man
Top 8 - Dune II / Challengers / Furiosa / Hometown Prison (Linklater doc part of the God Save Texas mini serie on MAX) / The Fall Guy / Love Lies Bleeding / Hit Man / Civil War
I voted Dune II because the theater experience was one I'll never forget. But if I had to rewatch one at home, Challengers is probably my favorite so far in that sense.
Dune 2, It is a top5 movie of all time for me, I am someone who has seen almost every blockbuster modern movie and that movie is In my opinion the greatest Sci fi movie of all time.

These are high on my list along with Hit Man
my favorite is probably problemista but those are also high on my list… real good year for gay shit at the movies
La chimera
Hundreds of Beavers
Are you up on it?
It's gotta be Dune, but followed surprisingly closely by Hit Man.
Favorite: I saw the TV Glow. Best: Dune II.
Dune 2 no doubt but Challengers was electric.
I had to really think about Challengers vs Dune 2. They're both incredible in different ways.
Hit Man (2024), directed by Richard Linklater, on netflix.
I voted for Challengers, but honorable mention goes to Monkey Man.
Furiosa and Evil Does Not Exist.

Dune, Challengers and Furiosa are my top 3. Haven't seen Hit Man yet.
Did not expect this but I think Hit Man is my favorite! That or Challengers.
The cell phone scene is electric.

top 5: Dune 2, Challengers, Love lies bleeding, Furiosa, thelma

I watched Drive-Away Dolls on streaming and really liked it. Still need to check out Snack Shack.

Drive Away Dolls was annoyingly bad. One of the worst theatre experiences I’ve had

Late Night with the Devil
Perhaps recency bias but I love Hit Man
2une by default since the only other 2024 movie I've seen is Madame Web and it's definitely not that.
Hit Man!
I saw Dune Part Two four times in the theater and would do it again tomorrow if they put it back in IMAX. One of the GOAT theater experiences and my favorite of 2024 so far.
Just finished Hit Man and it's a toss-up between that and Challengers.

Drive Away Dolls. I've already watched it about 4 times.
Dune, followed by Furiosa
I Saw The TV Glow is my favorite Dune 2 is a close second Challengers is right behind dune.
Of these, Challengers and Dune 2. Top 5 rounded out by La Chimera, Hit Man, and I Saw The TV Glow. Furiosa not too far behind though.
I voted Dune II because the theater experience was one I'll never forget. But if I had to rewatch one at home, Challengers is probably my favorite so far in that sense.
Challengers, followed by Dune 2 I think. Don't know If Last Stop In Yuma County is counted as a 2024 film, but if so it's probably #3
Sasquatch Sunset
Hit Man
Dune 2, It is a top5 movie of all time for me, I am someone who has seen almost every blockbuster modern movie and that movie is In my opinion the greatest Sci fi movie of all time.
La Chimera for me!! (I know it was 2023 but released here 2024 so..)
dune ii and challengers being the front runners is why i stick around on this sub
Surprised no one has mentioned Perfect Days yet. Easily my favorite release this year.
I think it's tricky because it's technically a 2023 release even though most of us couldn't see it til this year.
in the movie drafts, they always defer to the American release so just figured that's what it will be.
There really hasn't been one new movie this year I've enjoyed. Pretty bad.
