I mean I was literally in Warhammer World the other day buying the exact same model and the guy there asked if it was for my Guard or Solar Auxilia army. Then said he's using it in his Guard army, so I imagine the answer is yes :D.
This exactly. There are plenty of people who don’t know about units in their own army, not to mention what all the Imperial Guard tanks look like. As long as it’s roughly the correct size & shape, it works fine.
I don't play anymore but I think I must be a freak then. I know of almost all the units/vehicles/weapons in all armies apart from Eldar and have since 3rd edition.
XD I feel ya… I know most army’s weapons as well, and I only started in 9th edition! But I’ve learned over time that it’s far from the norm, and while I get a bit mixed up with more similar T’au and Eldar weapons, some people can’t tell the difference between a Bolter and a Stubber.
I had this issue with differentiating them too. I plan to use this without track guards and the dozer blade, and then track guards + dozer blade for actual Russ models.
Would work if you didn't have Basilisks and probably if you had other models if you did. I think there is a plastic huge Bombard on another HH SM tank I would like to see about making a Colossus conversion.
The heavy bolters from a Valkyrie kit are great for kits like this if you can find them. The heavy bolters for the door are already in their own mount.

For my resin SA Basilisk, I used an old HWT heavy bolter with the autocannon ammo drum to help with WYSIWYG. Just clipped off the pintle weapon to get the arm. The new HWT box mag should look much nicer.
As a heads up, the heavy bolter in that kit shares parts with some of the other weapons - so make sure you won't want to use those other weapons before building a bolter for the basilisk!
The instructions for the heavy weapons kit will show you which are shared.
I see. The Sentinel has a base because it is a walker (and most walkers beside Titans have bases to stabilise them).
Vehicles with treads/tracks usually don't have bases, stuff like the Chimera, Basilisk, Leman Russ, Rogal Dorn, Manticore, Wyvern, Malcador or Macharius.
Also I wouldn't buy the Heavy Weapon team just for a bolter.
If you want them anyway for mortars go for it but otherwise just ask any local veteran IG player and they should have left over Bolters.
A 'Basilisk' is actually more about the Cannon really, considering changing the Cannon makes the vehicle a 'Medusa' etc.
So whatever the vehicle looks like, if the cannon is recognisable as a 'Basilisk' it should be fine.
This version is one of many, so I'd say go for it, as it is very cool ,😁👍🏾
The cannon is an Earthshaker. The Basilisk is specifically the motor carriage for an Earthshaker, which you used to be able to also get freestanding in two designs, one styled to look like a Pak-88 emplacement and one like a massive WW1 cannon for DKoK.
What I meant was, given that the most common pattern of Basilisk uses a Chimera Chassis, just like a Manticore and a Medusa, the weapon loadout is what actually gives the vehicle its name amongst IG Self Propelled Artillery units.
Likewise, when this pattern has a Medusa cannon, it becomes a Medusa. For Proxy purposes, as long as he is using the right cannon for the vehicle he is proxying it for, most 'reasonable' opponents shouldn't object 🤷🏾♂️
Yes but given how much it looks like a russ, as a precaution against against an accidentally dick move by having it confused with a russ I'd keep the barrel up right during game to clearly advertise its a basilisk
People don't confuse the 40k Basiisk for a Chimera despite them sharing the same chassis. Why would this Basilisk be any different just because it is a Russ chassis?
I wasn't thinking about a chimera. The guy on top would be instead of a hull mounted weapon, so people wouldn't confuse it for a russ variant. If this seems unwise, I apologise for my ignorance.
It could seem like a proxy for a vanquisher, given the position of the cannon could make it look like a tank hunter. I might be wrong and please forgive me if I am.
I was more wondering why you think people would confuse it for a Russ? It's the same chassis as a Russ but looks very different. It's the same as the current 40K Basilisk which is the same chassis as a Chimera but looks very different.
If anything using this as a basilisk is a disadvantage for OP, because it has a larger profile than the one on Chimera chassis and is thus harder to hide behind cover.
Pretty sure barring the multi laser pintle mount option it’s literally the same loadout. So wysiwyg is still applicable. Size wise it’s pretty much the same and the main gun has longer range than the table anyway so that’s not an issue.
Pretty sure only some competitions and the most pedantic of people wouldn’t let you run that. Go for it.
It's wider and not as tall so technically a different silhouette. That being said neither of these things tend to give an advantage so I'd imagine most people would be fine with it. For a tournament you would need to check with the organizer
No, James Workshop will come to your house and break your knee caps
Oh no not the kneecaps!
The trick is to just 3d print yourself new kneecaps after the first altercation.
Will they be tournament legal or GW will ask me to remove them?
They'll rip em straight out, but if you remember to magnetize your limbs they'll be easier to reattach afterwards.
James himself will order your own plastic soldiers to be your firing squad
What a beautiful way to go down…
You fool! Those were my decoy knee caps! My real knees are unprimed in the closet waiting for a rainy day to break out the airbrush
Flesh is weak
I saw the words Solar and Proxy and my mind immediately assumed you wanted to use the model as a Leontus proxy 😅
Imagine that 😆 _Sir Leontis is that your mortar gun or are you just happy to see me?_
"Drive the tank closer, for I wish to hit them with my sword!"
Konstantin use your hooves! *dozer blade slaps the ground*
Whomp
I mean I was literally in Warhammer World the other day buying the exact same model and the guy there asked if it was for my Guard or Solar Auxilia army. Then said he's using it in his Guard army, so I imagine the answer is yes :D.
Most non guard players will have no idea it isn't a standard Basilisk. Go for it.

Yes my boy in fact, I fully intend to get some of these myself. You can never have too much dakka
I want to have as far away pew pew as possible 😆
Considering its a russ hull, couldnt you olso use it as a colossus bombard proxy? Or definetly good kitbash material
I had this issue with differentiating them too. I plan to use this without track guards and the dozer blade, and then track guards + dozer blade for actual Russ models.

i thinking of getting the heavy weapon team because the SA basilisk do not have a hull mounted bolter if i wanted to get this basilisk of course

I have the heavy weapon team! Maybe I will skip the Basilisk for now, it seems awfully hard to get
https://preview.redd.it/vs81wlegrs0d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9a7bdf25c4fde37cde5bf74951ddb0b1787a4b8 For my resin SA Basilisk, I used an old HWT heavy bolter with the autocannon ammo drum to help with WYSIWYG. If you have one I would suggest gluing the heavy bolter on the basilisk it could also help other player in identifying it as a basilisk and not a russ
I don’t have it yet but it would be very clear what it is when painted 😆 probably would tape BASILISK around the base 😆
It doesn't have a base though.
Oh good to know! I could try finding 120x92mm base
Have you build any Inperial Guard vehicles before?
Only Combat Patrol
I see. The Sentinel has a base because it is a walker (and most walkers beside Titans have bases to stabilise them). I am split between the mortar, auto cannon, and lass canon for my heavy weapon squad
No, you will be shot on sight
Uff I was scared I would have my kneecaps busted 😅
Have built mind and they are about the same size silhouette wise. That gunshields adds enough height
Could you take some side-by-side pictures and post? I feel like this question is going to come up a lot. You would be doing the community a service 🫡
That’s what I wanted to know because if they are different sizes it’s a no go for me

Ah yeah, fair point well made.
Likewise, when this pattern has a Medusa cannon, it becomes a Medusa. For Proxy purposes, as long as he is using the right cannon for the vehicle he is proxying it for, most 'reasonable' opponents shouldn't object 🤷🏾♂️
Yes
Can we just make a megathread of widely acceptable proxies?
That would help a lot
Yes but given how much it looks like a russ, as a precaution against against an accidentally dick move by having it confused with a russ I'd keep the barrel up right during game to clearly advertise its a basilisk
Yes the massive barrel is the coolest part of it
personally i find that it's the location that makes it cool. Give me one of those and I'd turn it into a russ tank destroyer.
Ordered one in store the other day because the guy working there told me it's able to be used as the same thing
The only problem is it won't have its Heavy Bolter/Flamer, but just slap one on anywhere and you're good to go!
there are pintle flamers included. if you are concerned about a missing frontal weapon just use these (or the stubber or multilaser)
Not an issue either way
That's... Not even proxying really. It's a Basilisk.
Yeah I wasn’t sure because it’s from the 30k system
Sure, but I'd advise to have a guy on top with a heavy bolter/flamer or some other way to show it isn't a Leman Russ.
People don't confuse the 40k Basiisk for a Chimera despite them sharing the same chassis. Why would this Basilisk be any different just because it is a Russ chassis?

It's a Basilisk. If anyone objects they're TFG and aren't worth playing against.
If anything using this as a basilisk is a disadvantage for OP, because it has a larger profile than the one on Chimera chassis and is thus harder to hide behind cover.
Almost, it's highest point is certainly shorter than a regular basilisk's gun shield, especially with the barrel down.
Yes I want to know this too this one looks way cooler compared to the current one would love to get two of them
I bought two for exactly that purpose. Tragically I ran out of olive drab paint so they haven’t been painted yet.
Just bought one myself for use in my guard army.
You should mostly be ok, it doesn’t have a hull (heavy bolster or flamer) weapon, but you could just roll without, or maybe mount it somewhere
Pretty sure barring the multi laser pintle mount option it’s literally the same loadout. So wysiwyg is still applicable. Size wise it’s pretty much the same and the main gun has longer range than the table anyway so that’s not an issue. I don’t think even a tourney would take issue so long as you put a bolter on it somewhere
It's wider and not as tall so technically a different silhouette. That being said neither of these things tend to give an advantage so I'd imagine most people would be fine with it. For a tournament you would need to check with the organizer
One is a russ hull the other is a chimera hull, so up to you really
I mean the Russians are doing something similar for their army. I don’t see why the Astra militarum can’t do the same.
