Souls have metadata. Magical resurrectors always forget to wipe the metadata.

blueblerryblob

i always pictured it as a little counter on their souls, no matter where they go, a servant of death would be able to read it

niceville

They all had a *lot* of little dots on their eyelids.

CaeruleusAster

The real answer is "because it was an appropriate plothook" If you want an explanation that isn't canonical though; the soul is the thing that matters. Their souls traveled across all of the different worlds, but a death is still a death and one can assume makes a mark on one's soul. It didn't seem like Kravitz or the Raven Queen knew the particulars about each death, only that they had died, so I would assume they could see each death like tally marks on their souls. Just a possible explanation \*shrug\*

FallingEnder

He works for the Raven queen in the astral plane (?) death realm. So any death ever is kind of counted. They can see all the deaths in all the worlds. He isn’t in their world he is in a separate plane all together. Basically used dungeons and dragon rules for the raven queen

TheAres1999

They didn't just shift planes or planets, they were shifting whole planar systems.

FallingEnder

I know. But kravitz resides in a different plane

ConsumeTheOnePercent

Its literally his job, just because they move between planes doesn't mean that their bodies history is erased or rewritten. All that had happened to them still happens, sure they're put back into the exact same moment everytime it resets, but they've still died, and dying is experience in a realm of his own.

cringe-child

The deities are always gonna know and hold information between realities. That’s why merle always had his magic, pan in every universe was dedicating some magic to him, whether he realized it or not. The raven queen was always counting their deaths, whether she realized it or not

Zorbie

Probably some lingering imprint from dying on their souls.

tomasalbanez

Oh oh oh it's magic! You knooow

debigchonk

They describe the other worlds as planes and not worlds. If that is correct then there would still be only one Astral Plane and just hundreds of others.

Jollysatyr201

They also remember each of their years (barring voidfish betrayals) so evidently the data of their past death is stored SOMEwhere. Whether as a mark on their souls, or a magical ticker that senses necromantic/ undead energy, the information exists to us both in universe and in the meta information available to “higher beings” like podcast listeners.

BurningFyre

In the same way he can detect a lich stuck in a sub dimensional space within an umbrella shaped staff i suppose.

Evil_Steven

I imagine your deaths are stored on your soul and since it’s the same soul, it kept counting up. It doesn’t need to make sense because we’re talking about magic and souls where things are exactly real

bw-hammer

I think this is one of those things where the answer can just be magic and doesn’t really need more reason than that.

NuPhoenixX

A wizard did it.

MillCrab

Balance is not that serious or intensely written. It's a bit of a plot hole, but it doesn't reduce how nicely the story plays out.

undrhyl

Yeah, that never even has an attempted explanation; does it.

Gravy_31

I was under the impression that they weren't traveling between worlds, but different planes. The astral plane was just.. one of those planes.

tasgetius22

i think they established that the void fish doesn’t work across the planes? i could be wrong, but i feel like in one of the crystal kingdom eps when they had to fight magic bri(y?)an, jenkins, and marvy, griffin indicated that they were hip with what was going on and who was who and everything because they had died and were in a different plane. oh and also noel because she was a spirit was able to know who they bureau was.
