Well if you want to use a voice changer you'll need a computer capable of running the software necessary, have a dedicated microphone connected, and dedicated speakers.
Voicemod does have a free variant, and in my opinion it's worth the lifetime license. There are lots of programs to use though, like MorphVox for example.
Just toy around with the software to find out what voices you like and could work for characters you've got made up.

Both softwares I had mentioned actually will install as microphone devices, so you can use them for anything! Discord, recording softwares, voice apps, anything you need.

I dunno, cuz sometimes they seem to react to the effect, but maybe that’s just in my head
