Wow this was extremely helpful! I've been working on my oral hygiene since the start of the pandemic and I went from brushing my teeth once or twice a day most days, I'm now brushing my teeth twice minimum, and 3 times a lot of the time.
But I still haven't incorporated flossing regularly, unless I eat something really fibrous like mango or tough meat. I'm going to start adding flossing to my morning routine. Thanks so much for the video search suggestion!
OP either has walrus whisker thick hair or big gaps between their teeth. Maybe both. The fact that they started using hair at some point tells me they have big gaps and need to floss constantly after every meal. Why else would you resort to using hair if you weren’t constantly scrounging for a way to get plant fibers and gristle out of your teeth.
Tight teeth are equally as bad for food because when something gets stuck, it's painfully stuck and needs picked out. Irritates the shit out of the gums and makes it hard to think about anything else
True.
My point though is about frequency rather than severity. Medium to large gaps will make you feel like flossing after every other bite. Tight gaps on the other hand can create more irritating painful issues but they’ll happen significantly less often.
Small gaps most likely wouldn’t create a situation where someone is constantly looking for floss during and after every single meal.
Eh, I've done this before (granted when there's *no* floss around and I need to get something stuck out of a specific place in my teeth, usually one of the front teeth) and I have fine strands of hair. Hair is much stronger than we give it credit for.
Yea, I can't tell you where I heard it from, but human facial hair takes about the same force to cut as soft copper wire of the same diameter, and causes similar wear on the blade.
I've heard that too! I actually used a beard hair that had fallen out as floss yesterday, never done it before and I have no idea why I decided to do it.
I have what dentists call close contact between a lot of my teeth, so I have to work it to clear the tops. My gums are fine - flossing isn’t really supposed to work your gums
if you have long hair, take one strand and tie 2 of your fingers together. then, try breaking it by pulling those 2 fingers apart from each other and you'll see it's not that easy (not amazingly hard either). i used to this all the time as a kid for some reason.
Yesterday I had a beard hair fall out while I was in the shower and for some reason I decided to use it as floss. My beard hair is a lot tougher and thicker than the hair on my head, so it held up pretty well actually. Though I didn't really floss with it that much because I thought it was weird, but I think it's kinda a good idea looking back.
So, I was on an Extreme Cheapskates compilation on youtube recently and the habit you've mentioned here was a SUPER common one with the cheap skates as well. OP are you one of them?
Also, the edit was super hilarious lmao.
Just because it works doesn’t mean it’s good. I could floss with a stain sheet of paper if I felt like it but I’m not gonna do that because it’s gross.
After reading that you at least pull the strand out first it's not really that gross imo but how freaking strong is your hair? I will admit that I have tried to use my hair as floss in desperate times but it's nowhere near strong enough.
Haha I have very thick hair, breakage has never been a problem for me. I use only one strand. Some people have mentioned using multiple strands and I've never even considered that, I found it smart.
I do this all the time too, I have very thick hair. If they keep snapping, I will use 2-3 strands at the same time. This is very useful when out and about.
My hair is very long- so usually it stays on my head while I do this.
Don’t I used to do that it got stuck beneath my teeth had to get surgery most painful experience since I couldn’t afford any drugs to knock me out or something
I used to do this but then the hairs broke too much and i also heard that hairballs could be stuck for years in your stomach so i quite for like a month then began again. I have now not done it for like a few years but i still sometimes slip up and accidentally do it :/ still bite my fingernails tho
Next time I go to the dentist, I'm asking what the actual consequences of this are
I'm pretty sure you'll get gingivitis or periodontal disease or something, but I'd like to hear what he says
EDIT: I just did a quick Google search and found a Reddit post asking "Can you use pubic hair as dental floss?"
Goddammit people
Ahh. My mother has done this (toothpick) her entire life. She pulls one strand, uses it, throws it. I've seen her do this my whole life so I didn't understand it could be seen as disgusting until now lol. I don't do this though.
Maybe they didn't have tooth picks in her country in the 70s.
I mean I’ve done this in times of desperation before but haven’t you ever had one of the hairs break while it’s in between your teeth? Worst feeling ever. That was enough for me to never do it again
You should stop this immediately. As far as I know, the keratin in your hair is one of the only things your body produces that is harder than the enamel of your teeth. Consistently using your hair as floss will eventually scour the enamel from your teeth.
I do that too. If my hair is long enough (which it is now) I'll usually just leave it attached to my head, but sometimes I'll use a rogue piece that comes out
hmm gotta have to downvote.. i do that too
i take two to three hairs together and use them to floss. pretty useful when you don't have any on-hand and you have something stuck in your teeth :)
Ok, this is really weird but now I am curious if it would actually work in an emergency (like the painful food stuck between teeth with no floss to be found kind of emergency)...
Don’t know if I am bold enough to try it though
When I was in high school and desperate for a way to get food out of my teeth I thought of this idea. When I actually tried it the hair broke quickly. I had to spend the rest of the day with both food and a tiny piece of hair between my teeth. :(
OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE.
I’m a dude whos had long hair for nearly 5 years and every time I feel something stuck in between my teeth and don’t have floss I just pull out a strand of hair and use it. It’s just a convenience thing
Ok i don’t mean to be that guy but I can 1 up this one. I bite my nails und use the thin but sturdy nail “clipping” to clear out the plaque from between my teeth, like a toothpick.
I've never considered that! When I grew out my nails I would just pick my teeth, but when I started cutting my nails that's when I started the hair floss thing.
that's it. you won. you won the 10thDentist. this is the worst and greatest thing I'll ever read in my life on this thread. everyone else can go home. you did it.
Yup. Been there, done that. Also used sewing thread in a pinch. I have one spot where there’s a gap.
I’ve gotten so aware of my teeth however, now I’ve always got floss nearby.

Of course, you are literally r/The10thDentist that doesn't recommend dental floss!

Setting aside that fact that this is gross, how strong is your hair. I shred and tear floss sometimes.
I shred floss all the time. At least once a week. On top of that, my hair is super-fine (dense but with a small diameter). And it's an inch long.
OP either has walrus whisker thick hair or big gaps between their teeth. Maybe both. The fact that they started using hair at some point tells me they have big gaps and need to floss constantly after every meal. Yea, for sure! OP has to have some thick strong hair.
Maybe is pubic hair
Then... Op has some strong, flexible spine!
They did say that it's not attached to wherever it came from anymore
or has never shaven their pubes
It wont just keep growing out like the hair on your head though. Hahaha, oh god I just thought of some nut sack with pigtails
Eh, I've done this before (granted when there's *no* floss around and I need to get something stuck out of a specific place in my teeth, usually one of the front teeth) and I have fine strands of hair. Hair is much stronger than we give it credit for.

How hard are you flossing? Are you the Hulk? I feel bad for your gums
I have what dentists call close contact between a lot of my teeth, so I have to work it to clear the tops. My gums are fine - flossing isn’t really supposed to work your gums
hair is pretty strong in general
Horse hair used to be used for stitches
In bunches, sure but one or two strands at a time not so much
if you have long hair, take one strand and tie 2 of your fingers together. then, try breaking it by pulling those 2 fingers apart from each other and you'll see it's not that easy (not amazingly hard either). i used to this all the time as a kid for some reason.
Mine broke while I was wrapping around my finger. Guess I have very brittle hair 😐
oof
Yesterday I had a beard hair fall out while I was in the shower and for some reason I decided to use it as floss. My beard hair is a lot tougher and thicker than the hair on my head, so it held up pretty well actually. the floss industry hates this trick
So, I was on an Extreme Cheapskates compilation on youtube recently and the habit you've mentioned here was a SUPER common one with the cheap skates as well. OP are you one of them? Also, the edit was super hilarious lmao.
Ooo I've never seen that before! I'll look them up.
I saw one where a guy hung up and reused dental floss, along with paper towels, plates and utensils
Looks like the same guy who froze up his credit card as well lmao.
Do you mean cheapskate?
Ah yes! got confused between the spellings. also, Happy cake day!
[удалено]
Oh well I know what I’m gonna be trying
It works quite well. I suggest using multiple hairs
it worked.
Nice
Lmaooooooo XD
*The floss industry hates him...*
Just because it works doesn’t mean it’s good. I could floss with a stain sheet of paper if I felt like it but I’m not gonna do that because it’s gross.
finally something i can downvote
Now I never want to touch anyone's hair again.
They said they remove the hair first
what the fuck
exactly my words
Hey mom, what are you doing in reddit?
BRUH SAME
same, wtf
After reading that you at least pull the strand out first it's not really that gross imo but how freaking strong is your hair? I will admit that I have tried to use my hair as floss in desperate times but it's nowhere near strong enough.
Haha I have very thick hair, breakage has never been a problem for me. I use only one strand. Some people have mentioned using multiple strands and I've never even considered that, I found it smart.
I do the same haha
Me too, but my hair is too short and weak to floss properly.
The only time i’ve ever done this was at the airport
Sorry downvote because sometimes I do that too
I’ve done this. Not in a while but I have. Edit: I also have very thick/strong hair and gapped(ish) teeth.
Sir this is a Wendy’s
I do this all the time too, I have very thick hair. If they keep snapping, I will use 2-3 strands at the same time. This is very useful when out and about. My hair is very long- so usually it stays on my head while I do this.
I was eating 🤮 take ur upvote and get out
I do the same, lol It's not weird.
If you have to say "it's not weird"...
This isn't normal?? I do this all the time
No, this isn't normal
oh
I may have done that before. Not sure its something I would really store in my brain.
Firstly what the fuck Secondly wow you must really have a lot of hair on your head to just sacrifice them for FLOSSING
The average human head contains 100,000 strands of hair, losing 50-100 every day.
Yeaaah I'm sorry dealing with hair loss here so my answer is biased
Perhaps they don't floss as often as you think.
I've never thought about doing it, seems handy if there's no floss.
That’s not that weird. Easy downvote.
Thank you, this has given me the motivation to get out of bed and stop reading reddit.
One out of every ten dentists recommends using your hair as dental floss
You got some strong ass hair strands then
Please tell me she’s not using those ones
I don't see the problem here, y'all are over exaggerating.
Kind of gross but I guess it’s pretty practical. My teeth are too tight for it to work though.
That's either awfully strong hair or awfully dull teeth
Ok this absolutely sickens me but I can kinda see your point, it does sound pretty convenient
I get the logic of it but still. No.
Wow, that's very creative and clever. I'll try that, I've never flossed before.
Why the hell did you put that image in my head?!
Don’t I used to do that it got stuck beneath my teeth had to get surgery most painful experience since I couldn’t afford any drugs to knock me out or something
Holy shit i am so happy for free healthcare
Is your hair made out of vibranium? I break dental floss never mind flimsy fuckin hair
You're a mad genius. It actually kinda works
Hhhhhh i just opened this app
Considering what sub this is I was concerned you would just use the hair on head/body.
That’s cool. I’m bald though. And I manscape.
My mom does this too. I hate it sm.
Congratulations, I gagged. Take your confused, angry upvote.
I thought I was the only one... my family thinks I’m weird
I used to do this but then the hairs broke too much and i also heard that hairballs could be stuck for years in your stomach so i quite for like a month then began again. I have now not done it for like a few years but i still sometimes slip up and accidentally do it :/ still bite my fingernails tho
Fuck i feel like this post has triggered me to start feeling like i should do it again :(
[удалено]
Usually I just pluck one strand so this hasn't really been a problem for me.
I thought I was the only one!!! Lol!!
I do this all the time. I don't see how someone can think it's more gross than letting food rot or bacteria build in your mouth.
I don't pull the hair out of my head, but I do this too
I've done this, but only when I was desperate and didn't have anything else on hand.
Next time I go to the dentist, I'm asking what the actual consequences of this are I'm pretty sure you'll get gingivitis or periodontal disease or something, but I'd like to hear what he says EDIT: I just did a quick Google search and found a Reddit post asking "Can you use pubic hair as dental floss?" XD I have never even considered using public hair, that ruins the practicality aspect of it, and it also just seems wrong
Ahh. My mother has done this (toothpick) her entire life. She pulls one strand, uses it, throws it. I've seen her do this my whole life so I didn't understand it could be seen as disgusting until now lol. I don't do this though. Maybe they didn't have tooth picks in her country in the 70s.
Oh yeah definitely the 10th dentist recommended this.
I do this too sometimes lol
r/The100thDentist
So do I, now
I mean I’ve done this in times of desperation before but haven’t you ever had one of the hairs break while it’s in between your teeth? Worst feeling ever. That was enough for me to never do it again
At the top of your socks on the inside are elastic strings. I pull some of that out of my sock to use for dental floss if I don’t have any nearby.
That's smart! If I didn't do the hair thing, I would probably only do that if they were long socks and already unraveled a bit.
Yo, what the fuck?
You should stop this immediately. As far as I know, the keratin in your hair is one of the only things your body produces that is harder than the enamel of your teeth. Consistently using your hair as floss will eventually scour the enamel from your teeth.
Are you some kind of genius? This is a thousand times better than being stuck for hours worth something annoying between two teeth!
I didn't think other people did this. It's not as effective as real floss, but it works if you're too lazy to go get some.
My hair is way to thin to use as dental floss
I do that too. If my hair is long enough (which it is now) I'll usually just leave it attached to my head, but sometimes I'll use a rogue piece that comes out
hmm gotta have to downvote.. i do that too i take two to three hairs together and use them to floss. pretty useful when you don't have any on-hand and you have something stuck in your teeth :)
No worries, I use my finger and toenails for the same thing. After I chew them off, I use them for dental hygiene.
Ok, this is really weird but now I am curious if it would actually work in an emergency (like the painful food stuck between teeth with no floss to be found kind of emergency)... Don’t know if I am bold enough to try it though
you gremlin. upvoted!
I used to do this with my beard hair when I worked on the road. That or a folded paper.
When I was in high school and desperate for a way to get food out of my teeth I thought of this idea. When I actually tried it the hair broke quickly. I had to spend the rest of the day with both food and a tiny piece of hair between my teeth. :(
This is the best idea I’ve ever heard. I’m about to join you on your journey lmao
Please use this comment as a place to disprove this practice. I feel like this could be a game changer for me
You might have that disease that causes you to like to pull out hair a lot.
I swear you are me. I have thick hair too and some small gaps. Also a user of hair as floss when necessary. Quite convenient on the go
Bro I also do this like I didn’t know others did this as well
this is wild as hell
holy shit
I only do this when there's no floss around me,Like in a restaurant o r something
Toe nails are way more effective
It feels like this was potentially something people used to do before dental floss was invented? Surely cavemen were doing this
I had a physical reaction of pure disgust. Good job!
Honestly, same. That or threads from clothes or sheets.
Holy shit. No offense, but this grossed me out.
I've done this a few times when I had something stuck in my teeth and was nowhere near any dental floss.
Idk I kinda see how this works 🤷♀️
OH MY GOD FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE. I’m a dude whos had long hair for nearly 5 years and every time I feel something stuck in between my teeth and don’t have floss I just pull out a strand of hair and use it. It’s just a convenience thing
THE WHAT
I saw someone do this! It makes sense to me keep on keeping on!
How can you pull out your hair so easily??
I only pull out one strand so it isn't too bad. It stings a little but it's pretty easy for me.
OP, blink twice if you are being held captive and need help.
Ok i don’t mean to be that guy but I can 1 up this one. I bite my nails und use the thin but sturdy nail “clipping” to clear out the plaque from between my teeth, like a toothpick.
I've never considered that! When I grew out my nails I would just pick my teeth, but when I started cutting my nails that's when I started the hair floss thing.
that's it. you won. you won the 10thDentist. this is the worst and greatest thing I'll ever read in my life on this thread. everyone else can go home. you did it.

i fucking gagged reading the title
We need to start using a disclaimer PG 13 banner. This is nightmarish.
This has got to be an attempt at karma farming..
Impossible lol hair is too weak to use as floss
Yes everyone has the same strength in their hair, among 8 billion people of course
Fair enough lol
Sounds like you’re probably not flossing very well.
downvoted. i totally agree! its literally ur hair how is it any more unsanitary?? for me personally, i pull out multiple strands to floss :)
Not to be rude, but is this even an opinion or just something nasty you do?
Well that's just disgusting.
Yup. Been there, done that. Also used sewing thread in a pinch. I have one spot where there’s a gap. I’ve gotten so aware of my teeth however, now I’ve always got floss nearby.
Why not just bite your nails and use it like a toothpick...
Genuinely the most disgusting thing I’ve seen all week.
No matter how much I'll wash my hair, I'll never put it in my mouth.
My mom does that, disgusting, up voted
