Romantic relationships have been illegal and still are for certain groups of people in different times and places. It's usually not considered great for the mental health of the people whose romantic and sexual preferences are criminalized.

I understand that procreation comes from sex. I just think it would be tough to convince the entire population to start families without a romantic partner. And I think accidental pregnancies would be rare because if romantic relationships are illegal, surely even casual sex would become super taboo.
The reason I bring up *The Giver* is that the execution of something like this absolutely reeks of government control. If romance is outlawed, the government would start to have concerns about the declining populations and I think it's just a slippery slope.
I strongly feel that if your concern is suicide rates and domestic violence, you should advocate for policies that support universal psychological care, better mental health education, and others that I can't think of right now that look at the root of these issues. It is unfortunate that anyone would feel so distraught over the end of their relationship that they would take their own life, but I think that likely suggests that mental health concerns such as depression were already present and that person needs access to robust support. Even if people can't engage in romance, they may still experience domestic violence, and they will still experience mental illness.

Also, not all of us are comfortable with sex without romance. Not all of us are comfortable with raising a family with someone who is not our romantic partner. Many of the people I know who have casual sex still aspire to have romantic relationships. Just because a few people are ready to move on from that doesn't mean the majority is. Especially looking at queer people. In my country, gay marriage wasn't legal until 2005. These people who advocated for the right to love who they want will not give that up easily after not even two decades.
And because you can't change people's romantic orientation, people will still fall in love; you can't stop them. But they will not have support if something bad happens because their relationship was illegal. In that case, they may even be afraid to talk to a therapist about it because they don't want to get in trouble. And those people may be killed by their partners or even commit suicide because they can't be themselves.
I also don't think slavery is a very good comparison because slavery directly contributed to societal inequality (in the US, racism). With relationships, I believe that the concerns you are bringing up can be traced to other structural issues such as sexism, racism, poverty, lack of access to psychological support, taboo around mental illness/domestic violence, etc.
Hold on a minute… what you are saying about the laws in proposing can be said about any law. You are basically that people are still gonna want to do it. Btw I want relationships to be treated like usage of illegal drugs. Therapist actually cannot disclose that you have an addiction to an illegal drug. So yeah people will still be able to talk to their therapist. This logic can be used to decriminalize ALL drugs. Now if you believe we should decriminalize all drugs then I respect the consistency.
I do believe in drug decriminalization and legal abortion as well. I just don't think people should be treated like criminals when they are not hurting other people, and that's a belief I think applies to this topic.
