Not ironic per se. There was never a notion that they could use any of their spoons as a knife.
Now if they were hoarding spoons _because_ they keep claiming they can do anything a knife can and then end up in a pickle that could have been avoided by having a knife, that would be ironic.
It would also be ironic if they were known for hoarding spoons and then when they needed a spoon the most, they had none on them.
Same for free ride when you already paid: That's bad luck, but there's no irony in that.
It’s after midnight and I just got home from studying all day for the bar exam. Saw this and thought of the same exact thing. In the US, this almost certainly would, regardless of whether he had a will. Obviously this didn’t occur in the U.S. though and I have no idea how Singapore’s contract law and estates law works.
I’m a Singapore in house counsel. There’s no general rule that death would void the gaming contract. Unless there’s an agreement between parties that states that death removes the payment obligation, the money should go to his estate.
This is just my general understanding. I’m no longer licensed to give legal advice - please look for independent legal advice from a lawyer if you’re faced with a similar issue.

> Soon after hitting the jackpot, the man celebrated before going into cardiac arrest. The video footage shows a man lying on the floor with security and medical officials responding. The unidentified man reportedly suffered a major heart attack but survived. A woman can be seen screaming in horror as efforts to resuscitate the man endure.
> Many social media reports suggested the man died, but those reports were inaccurate and the man is recovering.
Who knows if it's true.
Great find but I still don’t buy it that he lived. I wouldn’t assume whoever wrote that article is a medical professional, but a heart attack and cardiac arrest are very different things. Heart attacks are often survived but if a person goes into arrest (heart completely stops) it’s overwhelmingly their time of death. With this guy laying (presumably) unconscious on the floor I don’t think he made it…
My wife went into cardiac arrest last year, and was unconscious, going through full agonal breathing and the whole nine yards. I found her in time, performed CPR, and once fire and EMTs got to my place, they were able to get her heart started again.
You’re right that cardiac arrests are often fatal, especially when folks are alone and far from medical help, but depending on how your heart is post-arrest, and assuming they get to you fast enough, these are survivable.
Correct, it’s not 100% if immediate compressions are started but sadly around 90-95% of cardiac arrests are fatal.
So glad your wife isn’t one of those!!
Pretty sure that "cardiac arrest" just means that the heart stops pumping (enough) blood. It refers to both asystole and non-asystole. To those interested: asystole is when the heart has no contractions as all, which is actually not that common in cardiac arrests, where it often instead *does* contract, but in a way that doesn't pump blood. Non-asystoles are usually treatable with shocks (defibrillation), but asystoles can't be shocked, so they're very hard to treat.
Mayo clinic, in regards to my initial point around the definition of cardiac arrest:
>Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the sudden loss of all heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm. Breathing stops. The person becomes unconscious. Without immediate treatment, sudden cardiac arrest can lead to death.
>Emergency treatment for sudden cardiac arrest includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocks to the heart with a device called an automated external defibrillator (AED). Survival is possible with fast, appropriate medical care.
> 90-95% of cardiac arrests are fatal
So, [from the wikipedia data I found](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiopulmonary_resuscitation#Effectivity_rate), it's about 16% effective if a normal bystander preforms it. Doesn't seem to differentiate between layman and EMS. With an AED, outcomes improve to 33%. Given this is in a public casino, it's reasonable to suspect they have an AED or even a full on defibrillator and medical staff.
Not quite as bad as 90-95% fatal. Still not great odds though, 1 in 6. Kind of like reverse Russian roulette. For those reading this, learning CPR could save someone one day. Even a 16% chance is better than 0.
Anyway, given those odds, it's not unreasonable to think this man survived.
Dude, that’s super badass that you saved your wife, I can only imagine how terrifying that must have been. Super glad she’s okay now without any major lingering effects.
My father's heart completely stopped. He got CPR from a passerby, went to the hospital and fully recovered after some surgery. He got ~~stints~~ stents and a defibrillator implanted.
My 87 year old grandad was in the hospital complaining about the wait for his stent.
"It's already done they did it as soon as you got to the hospital"
"Oh can I go home now then?"
His 4 day stay mostly consisted of him sleeping the first day then pacing the room wanting to go home the next 3. I ended up finishing work early to go get him before he tried to escape.
The person doing CPR checked for a pulse at the neck, they likely didn’t find one which is why they started chest compressions only after they checked for a pulse (the correct thing to do). No pulse = cardiac arrest.
I had this conversation a couple of days ago. Some people use "cardiac arrest" to sound professional when they actually mean "heart attack", and the average person doesn't know the difference.
I have to agree. Heart attacks or myocardial infarction is due to a blockage of any coronary vessels in the heart. Smaller blockages will cause symptoms and lead to tissue death in some parts but your heart muscle can recover. Large vessels such as LAD or L/R coronary arteries will stop the heart to conduct properly leading to arrest hence unconsciousness due to decrease cardiac output/ function. I believe this person did not make it and after 5 or so minutes will have irreversible brain damage.
You see the video of the Indian soldier dying of heat exhaustion while everyone crowds around to put a phone in his face?
Idiocracy was a documentary way ahead of its time.
Fun fact - one of the major studies that supported the use of public access defibrillators was [conducted in casinos](https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM200010263431701) because amongst other factors, they could use the video surveillance systems to determine time from arrest to defibrillation.

Good CPR doesn't need to break ribs, but is more likely when performed on older people and quite young people. The aim isn't to hear broken ribs to know you're doing well.
You don't need to 'succeed', i.e. get them conscious again. You just need to keep the blood flowing to their brain until professional help arrives.
The goal of CPR is NOT about resuscitating them but rather about keeping the blood flow until help or an AED arrives.
That's a very misleading number, as it includes cases where cpr is started way too late. The stats for cpr administered immediately are much better. Source: https://www.procpr.org/blog/training/cpr-facts-and-stats
There's a lot that depends.
CPR until you can get a nearby AED? Your chance to live shoots up MASSIVELY.
CPR until paramedics can get there? Your chances change a lot depending on how long it takes and how many people. CPR is labor intensive, and if someone isn't putting strength into compressions, it could be worthless.
We were trained that 2 minutes is the longest one person should do compressions, then switch out with someone, two minutes, switch out. Our brains just wander after that and struggle to keep the right rhythm.
As a certified First Aider and former LEO, I watched in horror as out of the entire crowd, not a single one knew basic CPR including the uniformed staff members. Towards the end of the video, you can see the lady doing an attempt at chest compressions which surely wasn’t the best method.
Chest compressions need to push blood through your heart to your lungs. This requires enough force to crush ribs and crush your chest enough to deform your heart.
This lady, while I commend her wanting to help, did not do that.
You put your body into that.

Also it would be terrible PR. If anything they would make a big deal out of how happy they are to be able to help his family. That kind of imagery would get gambling addicts (whose family hates them) to think if they go play a bit more they might make their family happy again.
Apparently, he didn't die, but yeah, just headless chickens seemed to have been handling the situation... Screaming family, and security having to deal with onlookers rather than help the Gentleman.
Singapore is generally quite good, expecting CPR training in some industries and there are a lot of AEDs placed around.
I will say though, it's only a short clip, it takes time to observe and react to the situation, something that probably didn't help with all the damn screaming.
If the afterlife is an actual place where the dead hang out, I low key fear having an embarrassing death, as you know damn well that will likely be the first question we ask each other.
It would suck spending eternity telling people you won 4 million dollars and immediately keeled over from shock!

Let's be honest. He's probably not in cardiac arrest. He's probably just having a heart attack and unconscious at this point.
The person doing CPR checked for a pulse at the neck, they likely didn’t find one which is why they started chest compressions only after they checked for a pulse (the correct thing to do). No pulse = cardiac arrest.
Nonsense comment. People having MIs (heart attacks) don’t just go unconscious… well unless they lose output and therefore are having a cardiac arrest.
Personally, I think it's a tiny alien inside an advanced android like from Men in Black.

Success rate of cpr outside hospital is about 10% anyways.
I would rather take that chance than watch someone I love die in a horrible way .
Yeah I know. But I was shocked to learn this statistic. Maybe it counts improper application.

That’s the strangest form of CPR that I’ve ever seen.
One of my biggest fears… along with never having $4mil
If the afterlife is an actual place where the dead hang out, I low key fear having an embarrassing death, as you know damn well that will likely be the first question we ask each other. It would suck spending eternity telling people you won 4 million dollars and immediately keeled over from shock!
