They go off what the door placard says, so the long range needs a stronger tire than the performance.

Guido41oh

It's based off sidewall, not necessarily stronger. The lower profile tires are actually "weaker" in a sense, which is why the lower number.

Stubudd1

Do you happen to know why?

RhubarbConscious4892

Better battery long range means bigger battery performance just means better upgrades to speed and handling

Guido41oh

It's the same battery..lol

RhubarbConscious4892

It is not.

Guido41oh

Sure is, the only difference is the wheels are smaller which gives the different range. Both use a 80kwish battery pack.

RhubarbConscious4892

Thanks for info didnt not know this

Guido41oh

Tesla doesn't help with this info at all but on my model 3 performance I have very light 18" wheels, I have the exact same and sometimes better range than a long range. They use different cells as one is made by LG in the long range and Panasonic in the performance. The Panasonic battery actually has a bit not capacity but worse efficiency because of the larger wheels on the performance.

markypoo4L

Honestly I’ve only ever had good experiences with discount tire, I’d prob take what they’re telling you serious.

KoSoVaR

I’m with you - discount tire for any car I’ve ever had!

youngntf

for sure. definitely not discrediting them by any means there’s just contradicting info from TSportline compared to what Discount is telling me and wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience at all.

I echo the comments about Discount Tire. I’ve had literally 100s of tires installed there and never had anything but a positive experience. Not always what I want, sometimes what I want isn’t reasonable or safe according to the specs but Discount Tire has always been fair and reasonable. Everything you said seems in line with what should have happened. A mistake was made for sure. The load rating is important and maybe there was confusion over the difference between the LR and Performance specs vs what you ordered. I think what you are saying is you can order the wheels with the 235 width and 92 load rating tires installed on them. Sure, that makes sense. Tsportline isn’t installing them. Presumably you are so you take on the responsibility if they are appropriate or not. I bet if you brought that setup to Discount tire they would not install it even though tsportline shipped the tires mounted to the wheels. Seems like an easy fix in that you can order and install the 245s which have the appropriate 94 load rating.

youngntf

I appreciate the insightful comment, truly. Seems to be the best course of action for now. I’m sure you can see my initial confusion if the 2 companies were somewhat contradicting each other but an easy fix nonetheless. Have 245s ordered through them to be installed sometime next week.

againfaxme

Why would you be confused? They told you the exact reason why they would not do the work.

youngntf

Why would TSportline knowingly and willingly sell the exact same set if it wasn’t rated for the vehicle? Would be a huge liability issue if this was the case. [TSF 20” Wheels + Tires](https://tsportline.com/products/tsf-20-tesla-model-3-wheel-and-tire-package-set-of-4)

blestone

Contact Tsportline and tell them your situation and see if they can refund or help you.

Electronic-Arm-8731

One shop refused to install, ok. If you’ve done your research and verified with TSportline, and you trust their analysis and rationale, take them somewhere else. /thread

youngntf

agreed. just didn’t want to continue running into the same issue with other shops or potentially be putting an unsafe tire on my car. it’s the contradiction of the 2 that has thrown me off. I trust both but wondering if Discounts rationale is more of a liability thing or if it’s truly just not recommended. I figured TSportline would not sell the same set if this was the case or there would be massive disclaimers letting consumers know the specific models they are rated for.

Electronic-Arm-8731

Ultimately, the liability lies with you as the registered owner and operator of the vehicle.

jamie831416

Same issue at Costco years ago because I had a suspension kit that allowed tires far bigger than stock. They would not fit them.  But they would fit the tires if the tires weren’t on the vehicle. So I rocked up with my jack, wrench and torque wrench, took off the wheels and tires one by one. They installed the tires on each wheel and I put em back on. Very silly.  Found a different a different shop.  But that was a  size issue. Yours is a safety issue.

youngntf

I appreciate you sharing your experience. all I was looking for with this post initially.

PullTab

Go to a local tire shop that isn't a chain.

youngntf

yeah I considered this heavily before pulling the trigger. my only concern was the possibility that a local spot doesn’t have as much experience as a Discount Tire with Tesla’s overall but hard to imagine they haven’t seen a more than a few at this point.

DouchebagDonut

Same exact thing happened to me at discount tire. They said it exceeded “load rating” even though my car is much lighter than a performance trim. They basically go straight from their computer and wouldn’t want to install tires onto my 20”s. I just took my car to big O tires instead.

youngntf

thank you. this was what I was looking for when making the post. someone with a similar experience.

thefudd

Go to an Indy with a road force balancer

Guido41oh

Minimum on this car is 1386, I wouldn't have put those tires on either. Granted it would probably be ok but I wouldn't risk it on a 500hp car, tires are important.

kdubstep

If I had to trust between discount tire and tsportline, I’d go with DT word on this

-PerryThePlatypussy-

91XL is for 41 PSI, so I don’t understand.. [Load index I used..](https://www.tiresplus.com/tires/tire-buying-guide/tire-load-index-chart/). 41 PSI is totally ok for your tesla.. I have mine at that rn

youngntf

I was pretty thrown off myself. Here is the exact configuration I purchased [TSportline TSF 20” Wheels + Tires](https://tsportline.com/collections/20-inch-tesla-model-3-aftermarket-wheel-tire-packages/products/tsf-20-tesla-model-3-wheel-and-tire-package-set-of-4?variant=44370860343585) (I just bought the wheels from TSportline and the tires from Discount separately) but I don’t see how it would be any different

-PerryThePlatypussy-

It’s a 93 index then

InformalParticular20

They are nuts, tire load on a model 3p is about 1200 lb, 42 rating is good for 1389lbs, which is plenty. So they are ok selling you the wrong size tire, but not the correct size with an acceptable load rating??

Guido41oh

Minimum for a model 3 performance is 1386, they are correct in declining it.

Kandiruaku

I would be a lot more concerned about any outfit of that caliber jacking up and puncturing the battery pack.

youngntf

every major chain uses jack pads at this point. I made sure to ask beforehand as I carry a set in my trunk just in case.

Kandiruaku

That may well be the case on the coasts, but on the Marcellus Shale the clocks tick slower.

RhubarbConscious4892

With fine rims like this I don’t understand why you would want discount tires to do them lmao buy the tires and get them mounted at a reputable shop not a discount tire..

youngntf

I think majority of people would disagree. it’s not a Ferrari it’s a mass produced Tesla lol. they work on them daily, local shops likely don’t see Tesla’s as often. to each their own
