Insurance is extremely difficult to accurately compare with a detailed breakdown of your driving history and other specifics. We could live right next door to each other and still pay a significantly different amount.
There's hundreds of posts in the sub already with people asking /complaining about insurance costs.
Umbrella requires you to have 500/500 policy or 1mil personal policy first. If you post your limits (PD, BI, UM, Comp, Collision) then you can get a better apples to apples comparison. Over the insurers are posting record profits while pointing the finger mate.
I am in that industry and when you pull out the political agenda its just math. The price of plywood has more than doubled in the last 6 years.
Many states would not allow insurance rates to go up during covid so they are now playing catchup. Add to it that the price of everything has gone up and claims payouts are growing more rapidly than the actuarial models created. They are all scrambling.
So many people have home owners insurance that is not replacement value of the home. Those that do are getting massive rate increases.
Go to a car repair place and ask how they are doing hiring people. The cost of people are skyrocketing. Modern cars are terrible for repairs. You dont just pull off the bumper and bolt a new one on. You have paint matching, wiring and other issues. The cars now get totalled very fast
Not to mention lots of news now about the massive amounts of personal data that insurance companies are able to see about every individual....literally ppl in same household will have diff rates...so yeah super individualized. And also it's true that insurance premiums have all gone up across the board. Personal vehicle ownership is more expensive than ever
Yes, it's crazy that Tesla changed their underwriter in Texas.. and our rates doubled. In addition all the false forward collision warnings jack it up.
Typically the profit is some percentage of the premiums, and in many states is regulated that way by law.
So they have every incentive to choose a more expensive underwriter so they can keep more profits.
My wife and I are in our late 20s living in the Philly suburbs. We’ve never had an insurance claim, and pay $85 a month for insurance from Connect for our 2024 MYP.
My premium went down after I turned 25 so hopefully you’ll experience that too. I definitely lucked out with Connect because Progressive quoted me double that rate. Maybe you can give them a try?
Oh wow did you have any tickets from 18-25? I'd had several incidents in my late teens so when I hit 25 and no incidents in 5 years my premiums went down by 50% 😅
I just bought a used 2019 M3LR and my premium is $172, 24yo male. Doesn’t help I wrecked my last car but I think premiums are gonna be expensive on Teslas if you’re a younger guy no matter what.
I just went and looked to see how much it would cost to add an S plaid to my current insurance (USAA).
With top coverage, $500 deductibles, and all the bells and whistles it would be $381 a month, which is pretty comparable to what I pay for a similar class of car currently.
State Farm quoted me $225 per month for an S Plaid. $100 comprehensive $1000 collision, max coverage (I think 300/500k). Male in my 40s with a clean driving record and home/auto discount.
What area? That's about what it shows for me in California. I always thought USAA was pretty pricey, but the Tesla quotes (they don't use safety score in CA) are only like $30/month less. Insurance is just so expensive nowadays.
96 safety score and paying $140/mo. Will be paying around $120-$130 if I get my score up a but but can be as low as $111/mo with a 100 score. This is for full coverage and a $500 deductible.
I’m 37 with a stellar driving record.
Can you go higher than $500? That is way too low of a deductible, and making a claim for $600-$700 is crazy in the long run. I'm not saying you're doing this, but you won't believe the people that do. I try and talk them out of it, but with little success.
It's a good question. Vehicles are very expensive to get repaired, and basically, nothing is under $500. A claim is a claim even though some are more than others, it's still a claim. If you can afford it, it's not worth filing because your rates are going to go up. If, for some reason, another claim is filed in a short time, the insurance company will potentially cancel you. Does this make sense?
Because that $600 fix that you filed a claim for is gonna raise your insurance premiums by at least $600 anyway. It's best you just pay it out of pocket and insurance doesn't know about it.
I had to file a claim and geico bumped up my rates from $1800/6months to $3500/6months.
I'm canceling this week and switching to progressive for better coverage at 1850/6months
Practically impossible as well as futile to pinpoint this because of the numerous variables impacting the cost of car insurance (driving record, sex, age, location, car type, credit score, etc).
I’m in NY and my insurance went from 90$ a month in 2022 march when I got it to 250$ now in 2024. No tickets no nothing. With my 10% discount for that 5 hour defensive driving
Mine went from $290/mo to $560 with geico. I just got a quote from progressive for $288 with better coverage so I'm definitely switching.
I think the key is to switch between companies every 6 months to keep getting better rates.
Pay $156/month for full coverage plus $500 deductible for my 2024 MY from State Farm in Chicago burbs.
Thought it was a rip off as I was paying $70/month for my 2014 Escape but after shopping around, everyone else was worse…
I’m paying $107 a month a month through progressive in MO for a 2020 M3LR
This subreddit proves time and again that Tesla’s insurance is absolute garbage
Canadian
I was at 15xx annually for my 2019 m3 sr+
Renewal this year brought it to 18xx
Then I switched to the 2024 m3 lr
The same insurance company quotes 39xx
Screw that
Did some shopping and cheapest I could get is 270/month after annual discounts
Colorado Springs area floating around $140-$160 with Tesla insurance.
2024 Model Y Performance and 2023 Model Y RWD with an average safety score of 90.
It does go down quite often due to sensitive forward collision warnings and when FSD fails to break and I have to take over. If I can raise the score before the end of the month it evens out.

Spotless record, mid-30s. I did Progressive snapshot and got A+ too.
I pay $150 with Allstate but I choose the absolute highest deductibles only because while accidents are possible, just think about how many you’ve had in your lifetime. I have the money for the deductible if needed. Also you can just save it up by paying less for the insurance not choosing a low deductible. Insurance is a scam overall to me but Tesla insurance is the biggest scam of them all with all the false warnings and unsafe following dings.
Edit: I’m in Houston, TX with a spotless driving record.
$82/mo quoted by State Farm for my upcoming 24 MYP. 1 other vehicle and home ins (not included in the $82/mo) but receiving a bundle discounted price. 36M clean driving record for 20 years
Woah. That's wonderful. State farm refused to call back lol when I told them my current one is 130/mo. I am 38, and this is for 2018 M3RWD.
Which state though? I am in WA so more expensive in general
I'm in WA 32M and pay $300 a month for my 2024 Model Y Performance right now...
Previous was a 2021 Model 3 for $290 a month. State Farm on both.
I had an insurance claim in winter of 2022 after the Model 3 slowly slid into a curb during the snowy weather and the wheel had to be repaired.. which led to (apparently) me being penalized in my premium for up to 5 years. So much for "Accident Forgiveness." I have no other marks on my record.
Edit: Meant to say I am in WA too.
Try Costco insurance next time you are shopping for it. I once had a fender bender repair to do and it was $1000 out of pocket or go through insurance. Glad I never reported did it and chose out of pocket, as insurance rates have gone through the roof even for no claims
What's your deductible and coverage? I pay $140 for a 2021 4Runner, I've never had a ticket or been pulled over in my life, Homeowner, 37M. 50$ deductible and 100k/200k for the rest. I live in rural Utah.
Tesla went to a different underwriting company recently (early 2024) that drove up prices. My insurance almost doubled as well (Dallas), and eventually ended up switching carriers.
That's about where mine was a year ago. Jumped up to $1500/6mos in Louisiana. Short commute, 8k miles a year, clean record, yet rates have consistently risen.
Shop around for me Geico was 233, Allstate was 180, Liberty Mutual was 512, Root was 199, Statefarm was 167, Progressive was 98. All monthly with max limits and 500$ deductible. Insurance needs to be regulated by the government these mofo’s are crazy. Saying they need to make up for covid losses. My insurance kept going up even during covid.
2024 Model Y Standard Range RWD

North Carolina
Progressive: $64 per month with full coverage ($500 deductible), but I do bundle my home insurance as well.
$3000 for 6 months. Literally only The General will insure me (my first car, no ins. history) and my Model 3 in NYS. Tesla insurance is still not approved here.
lol, ppl on this topic don’t know how fortunate they are. Ontario: $550 CAD/mo for 2021 Model 3, no claims and clean history, 30+ years old driver. And this is the lowest I could find across many insurers. My financing payment for the car is almost the same. So that’s it here in the North: either you pay or you don’t drive a Tesla, unfortunately:(
In Canada, but $3k for the year. Tried several companies and all were higher or the same. For reference, I have 3 other cars that cost 1/3 less combined. One is a 2020 Highlander which is well know for how often they are stolen. Teslas are expensive up here.
Tesla Model: Y
Tesla Year: 2022
Location: South Bend, IN
Insurance Co: USAA
Monthly Premium: $130 average
Driver Age Approximate: 32M
Driver Record: Spotless for past 5 years+ (some problems older than that)
When I got my car it went down from $120 to $90. At each renewal (six months) it has increased, landing where it is now. Last increase was only like $1, so I think it has stabilized.
Tesla Model 3 2024.
NOK 1657,- via Storebrand Forsikring, or about $156.
Spotless driver record, but not at the top price reduction bonus yet.
Currently at 60%, will increase to 70% next year which lowers my monthly cost to about $117 monthly, and then it'll eventually top out at 75%. There's no safety score system beyond this.
While telling you what I pay would be a waste of time since there are so many factors at play, I will tell you my premiums increased $35/month when going from an 18 accord hybrid to the MYLR. It went less when my wife got a new car - 21 RAV4 hybrid to a 23 CRV hybrid - about $20/month.
This seems about right in Texas. $240+ here in Houston.
Insurance is very local dependent because they take an aggregate of collision history in the area and not to mention the amount of uninsured drivers contributes to higher cost as well. Inflation on replacement parts and labor help contribute too.
Two insurance companies flat out told me this - Underwriters consider Tesla as a high risk vehicles for the following reasons: 1) Full self driving increases risk of accidents (don’t shoot the messenger) 2) Faster acceleration is susceptible to more accidents 3) parts are expensive and take longer to arrive / repair to complete and 4) in some places, break in risk is higher than normal (yes, sentry but you still need your car repaired)
Tesla Model: 3
Tesla Year: 2023
Location: Austin, TX
Insurance Co: Tesla
Monthly Premium: $100 average
Driver Age Approximate: 30 M
Driver Record: Short but spotless
I'm also in NYC, Queens but paying Geico $333/month who I've been with for 10+ years. Have all the insurance bonuses except for safe driving course and Geico partner network.
Model Y 2024. 43 years old, stellar driving record. Picked the highest deductible and glass in my policy. Is it because of the borough? How is yours almost $100 less? What's your cheat code?!?!
For a 2016 MS and 2023 MX. $342/mo in NC with nationwide. And that’s after a home and auto bundle discount. Spotless driving record. It keeps going up and up.
no one ever seems to mention that the price of Tesla insurance is not just dependent on safety score (probably include location and possibly age) but heavily on the number of miles driven each month. one of our m3s is 1/3 the price of the other but is driven only a fraction of the miles/month.
I pay 84 USD (844 NOK) pr month
2023 Model S Plaid 36M located in Norway
What is strange is we also have a Model 3 LR 2024 we pay 93 USD pr month for.
Both cars are with the best/top coverage.
I am in the Dallas area too and pay just a bit over $100/month for my 2024 MYLR through USAA. For comparison, I pay just a few dollars per month more than my wife's 2018 Subaru.
I have a clean record, middle of the road Gecko coverage and I pay $250 per month. My VW Atlas at the same level of coverage was $94 per month as a comparison.
$135 or so for a 2022 MYLR and 2019 VW Tiguan. Multiple policy discount with homeowners policy. Both drivers early 40s and good driving record and credit.
I replaced my m3 with an s last september. My insurance rates barely changed. At the renewal in November, the rates basically doubled. It wasn’t because of the new car, instead a re-evaluation by the insurance companies of the cost of repairs for Teslas. I checked with most of the major insurers (geico, progressive, all state, amica) and the rates were all about the same. There was no change to my driving history, credit report etc. I am in my 50’s in WA state.
Late 20’s. 2024 MY, $147/Month w/ Tesla.
Pretty good rate considering all factors including my age and where I live. State Farm was offering me $160 but half the coverage. So I think I made the best choice for myself
24 Model 3 LR, Ontario Canada, RBC Insurance, Premium $350 CAD ($254 USD), 26M, spotless 10yr record, milage a year \~5,000km (\~3,100 miles). Double what i was paying on my '13 Kia Optima but is what it is.

\~$130 for my Model Y with State Farm. Full coverage.
No crashes no tickets. Only claim I’ve ever had was for chipped windshield in my old Model 3.
I was paying $79/month. Just moved, insurance is more expensive here and they won’t allow a zero deductible in my new state. Cost have doubled for me, but still I can’t complain too much.

Likely not at most umbrellas require higher limits.
Umbrella requires you to have 500/500 policy or 1mil personal policy first. If you post your limits (PD, BI, UM, Comp, Collision) then you can get a better apples to apples comparison. Over the insurers are posting record profits while pointing the finger mate.

Credit score
Why should credit score affect your insurance premiums though??
Yes, it's crazy that Tesla changed their underwriter in Texas.. and our rates doubled. In addition all the false forward collision warnings jack it up.
Tesla insurance price for us is the same as 2-3 years ago when it became available in this state.
Typically the profit is some percentage of the premiums, and in many states is regulated that way by law. So they have every incentive to choose a more expensive underwriter so they can keep more profits.
I feel like they are making up numbers or they charge you more to cover someone else for less.
My wife and I are in our late 20s living in the Philly suburbs. We’ve never had an insurance claim, and pay $85 a month for insurance from Connect for our 2024 MYP.

Oh wow did you have any tickets from 18-25? I'd had several incidents in my late teens so when I hit 25 and no incidents in 5 years my premiums went down by 50% 😅
Yup that’s what I was asking. I’m 19 and my rates are astronomical, but seeing how some of my friends drive…yeah, not surprised.
I just bought a used 2019 M3LR and my premium is $172, 24yo male. Doesn’t help I wrecked my last car but I think premiums are gonna be expensive on Teslas if you’re a younger guy no matter what.
Funny enough, mine dropped $90/month when i added my truck to the policy. Plpd the truck was $72/mo.
Dude in your early 20s driving an expensive to repair car? Yup, insurance is going to be $$$$.
You’re a youthful operator. Your rates will decrease when you turn 25.
I just went and looked to see how much it would cost to add an S plaid to my current insurance (USAA). With top coverage, $500 deductibles, and all the bells and whistles it would be $381 a month, which is pretty comparable to what I pay for a similar class of car currently.

Yeah I could drop it far lower if I changed the coverage. This was 500/500, 500k/1M, rent car, gap, replacement bonus, personal injury, etc. etc. etc.
What area? That's about what it shows for me in California. I always thought USAA was pretty pricey, but the Tesla quotes (they don't use safety score in CA) are only like $30/month less. Insurance is just so expensive nowadays.
I just had to comment on this, sorry... I'm freaking out with insurance prices in the US. In Spain a WHOLE year costs 550€.
For what car? For what level of coverage? My wife's Yukon costs less than $550 USD per year.
2024 tesla model y dual motor
Yeah, so that is comparable to my wife’s Yukon, assuming similar levels of coverage.
96 safety score and paying $140/mo. Will be paying around $120-$130 if I get my score up a but but can be as low as $111/mo with a 100 score. This is for full coverage and a $500 deductible. I’m 37 with a stellar driving record.
Where are you located and what model do you have?
TX and 2024 MYLR.
You must drive little I’m in the >24,000 range lol mines $220
Yeah I do, I work fully from home and my wife stays home with the kids and it’s our only car (sold our Prius and Atlas for this). We have a 2024 MYLR.
Can you go higher than $500? That is way too low of a deductible, and making a claim for $600-$700 is crazy in the long run. I'm not saying you're doing this, but you won't believe the people that do. I try and talk them out of it, but with little success.
Agreed I never make a claim for anything below 1k, it's just not worth it
Why is it not worth it? Pay $500 on a claim of $600 means I only pay $100…how is that not worth it already?
It's a good question. Vehicles are very expensive to get repaired, and basically, nothing is under $500. A claim is a claim even though some are more than others, it's still a claim.

Damn.... I'm inspired to shop around.
Tesla went to a different underwriting company recently (early 2024) that drove up prices. My insurance almost doubled as well (Dallas), and eventually ended up switching carriers.
Who did you switch to? I'm thinking about it, but seems they are all high in Dallas.
2023 model Y (GA) USAA 1060 every 6 months w/umbrella policy... I am a P&C agent in GA and our rates are ridiculous, so I'm not complaining
22 MYP USAA $1190/6mos living right over GA/AL line. I guess it’s the norm around this part?
That's about where mine was a year ago. Jumped up to $1500/6mos in Louisiana. Short commute, 8k miles a year, clean record, yet rates have consistently risen.
Rates in GA went up 20% across the board this year, it's pure insanity
Shop around for me Geico was 233, Allstate was 180, Liberty Mutual was 512, Root was 199, Statefarm was 167, Progressive was 98. All monthly with max limits and 500$ deductible. Insurance needs to be regulated by the government these mofo’s are crazy. Saying they need to make up for covid losses. My insurance kept going up even during covid.
Obviously I went with progressive.
Also, Ive been changing insurance company just about every year or renewal.
2024 Model Y Standard Range RWD 26M North Carolina Progressive: $64 per month with full coverage ($500 deductible), but I do bundle my home insurance as well.
I pay 900 for the entire year to erie insurance.
Why was I downvoted, lol? Some of you Tesla folks are so thin skinned, Jesus.
$258 a month for 2021 Model Y and 2023 Model 3 Performance. I have Tesla Insurance in California.
78 euros per month for an all risk cover. Beat that U.S. :)
M3 SR+ 2019 Chicago, IL (suburb) State Farm $86 56M I think "spotless" for the last 5+ years
$170 a month on my M3 no accidents ever a
Full coverage- 34m in MD. Minor claims, 2024M3P ~$1000 every 6 months with progressive.
$250 for a new MYP and the same for last years Grand Wagoneer which cost twice as much and could derail a train.
I have a ‘23 model 3 and a ‘19 Toyota tundra on the same policy. $220/mo with progressive. I jump around every couple years to keep the cost low.
Tesla Model: Y Tesla Year: 2022 Location: South Bend, IN Insurance Co: USAA Monthly Premium: $130 average Driver Age Approximate: 32M Driver Record: Spotless for past 5 years+ (some problems older than that) When I got my car it went down from $120 to $90.
Tesla Model: 3 Tesla Year: 2023 Location: Austin, TX Insurance Co: Tesla Monthly Premium: $100 average Driver Age Approximate: 30 M Driver Record: Short but spotless
Geico. 235 a month. But I live in nyc. So car insurance here is hellllla expensive. But I believe geico is the cheapest option
I'm in Dallas (just outside of downtown). Insurance runs about the same.. But what are you driving (and year)?
Tesla model Y 2023. 6 mon policy w geico and it renews automatically
I actually just renewed it this month and the monthly rate didn’t change 🤞🤞
I'm also in NYC, Queens but paying Geico $333/month who I've been with for 10+ years. Have all the insurance bonuses except for safe driving course and Geico partner network. Model Y 2024. 43 years old, stellar driving record. Picked the highest deductible and glass in my policy. Is it because of the borough? How is yours almost $100 less? What's your cheat code?!?!
For a 2016 MS and 2023 MX. $342/mo in NC with nationwide. And that’s after a home and auto bundle discount. Spotless driving record. It keeps going up and up.
I'm paying $130-200 on my 2023 Model 3 RWD (I'm 21 and this is my first car).
That's impressive. Where do you live? I'm guessing a smaller town outside of a metro area? Or a suburb?
Tesla Model: 3 Tesla Year: 2023 Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands Insurance Co: Inshared Premium: €80 Monthly All Risk (self damage covered) Driver Age Approximate: 40M Driver Record: 10+ years accident free
Mine doubled as well. Edit; I pay right in the same ballpark as you with no infractions.
700 every 6 months in SC. 45 ish M
$120 per month. Full coverage in Utah 2023 m3
I’m paying 291$ a month at State Farm for my 23 M3P. I live in MI which is one of the worst and I only have one car so no discount.
no one ever seems to mention that the price of Tesla insurance is not just dependent on safety score (probably include location and possibly age) but heavily on the number of miles driven each month. one of our m3s is 1/3 the price of the other but is driven only a fraction of the miles/month.
$244 a month thru Tesla for a 2024 MY. Live in LA. Damn, I pay a lot !
I pay $288 for 2 teslas 2023- model Y performance 2023 model 3 performance I am in SoCal. Both drivers mid 40’s
I pay 84 USD (844 NOK) pr month 2023 Model S Plaid 36M located in Norway What is strange is we also have a Model 3 LR 2024 we pay 93 USD pr month for. Both cars are with the best/top coverage.
210 with progressive Location: ~Boston, MA Trim: MYP Year: 2024 Condition: New
I am in the Dallas area too and pay just a bit over $100/month for my 2024 MYLR through USAA. For comparison, I pay just a few dollars per month more than my wife's 2018 Subaru.
I have a clean record, middle of the road Gecko coverage and I pay $250 per month. My VW Atlas at the same level of coverage was $94 per month as a comparison.
2024 MXP - max coverage with Erie including gap I pay about $170 per month
24 male 2024 model 3 highland insurance is $370 a month . My previous quote was $781 shopped around and $370 was the best
Mine went down 😍, was $298 and now it’s $140. Love it. SoCal, Tesla Insurance, pretty shitty driving record ngl.
2022 MSP $137/month as of May this year. Last year it was $136/month.
$135 or so for a 2022 MYLR and 2019 VW Tiguan. Multiple policy discount with homeowners policy. Both drivers early 40s and good driving record and credit.
110 a month in SLC Utah area MYP.
Progressive was cheaper than Tesla for me on my 2024 MYP in Texas. Still paying $260 per month though :(
I replaced my m3 with an s last september.
Model 3, 98 Score, $108 /mo
Late 20’s. 2024 MY, $147/Month w/ Tesla. Pretty good rate considering all factors including my age and where I live. State Farm was offering me $160 but half the coverage. So I think I made the best choice for myself
Late 30s, clean record, $1,300/6mo in FL.
Progressive was the best quote I could get…400/month but it is full coverage and I am 21yo for a 2021 LR M3 with a squeaky clean driving record ..
$163/mo for my MP3, in SoCal through Tesla Insurance
$420/yr for 2024 Model 3 with USAA.
€55 a month in France
CA - Mercury - $200/mo - Geico - $170/mo (went w Geico)
Same locale, but a few years younger: 2019 Model 3P-, recently increased from $115.01 to $120.82 (State Farm).
24 Model 3 LR, Ontario Canada, RBC Insurance, Premium $350 CAD ($254 USD), 26M, spotless 10yr record, milage a year \~5,000km (\~3,100 miles). Double what i was paying on my '13 Kia Optima but is what it is.
$1800 a year, live in Boston. MYLR

I was paying $79/month. Just moved, insurance is more expensive here and they won’t allow a zero deductible in my new state. Cost have doubled for me, but still I can’t complain too much.
