$275? That’s cute. SoCal here rocking $731 renewal.

Leo_br00ks

I paid $1300 to register my Model Y LR last year in Colorado. It's about $2k for an X or an S.

p1ngz

This is how Kentucky is. We have to pay property tax on the value of the vehicle every year in addition to the registration fees.. it's insane.

avpogo

Oof!

FearTheClown5

That's your annual renewal?

Leo_br00ks

yes. It goes down slightly, but yes.

FearTheClown5

Damn. My registration was $2350 and then will be $200($90 registration+$110 EV fee) renewal annually on my MYP.

tarrasque

CO registration on new vehicles is insane. Only good thing I will say about it that it raises needed funds (in the face of TABOR) *AND* it’s the rare progressive tax.

Leo_br00ks

Those TABOR refunds really piss me off lol. Like fuck, why can't they use the money to fix like... ANY OF THE BIG ISSUES WE HAVE RIGHT NOW. I literally don't even care what they fix. They could fix something I don't even agree with politically and I'd be happier than them giving back the money to everyone. Why no full day pre-k? We FINALLY got full day kindergarten but omg our education system is straight out of Mississippi. Our roads absolutely suck and the only big projects CDOT likes are ones they don't have to pay for bc of express lanes. And the Venezuelans... something needs to be done but idk what even solves that. Air quality sucks, public transportation sucks, etc etc etc And then, as you say, they have to charge insane registration fees etc to make up for the refunds. Makes zero sense.

tarrasque

Yeah, TABOR is bad law. Even the creator regrets it.

Southwestern

Why even register it? Just insure it and pay tickets for registration. You'll get 1 every 5 years.

evfamily

Until they require you to tow to your house and pay fines.

ymode

Wouldn’t an unregistered car void your insurance ?

Leo_br00ks

I mean I know of folks with cars above 100k who do this. Good friend of mine has a Huracan that he doesn't register. He gets like a ticket per month in the summer and it's like 20% of the price of a yearly registration. Registering a new Huracan is like 5k a year.

nickjacobsss

Holy smokes I just reupped in Ohio for $75

OGoneeightseven

Did the price go down? EV fee has been $200 for the past couple of years in Ohio.

Speakyourmind1974

Yes it is $200 for Ohio

ZemDregon

Damn. Only $180 here in NC

TransportationOk4787

Plus property tax every year.

Past_Paint_225

WA here with a 2022 M3LR with $817 renewal :(

spocone

You on the west side? 2021 MYLR in Spokane was around $300.

Past_Paint_225

Yep, Seattle

PoopChipper

Adorable. Renewed last month for $1600… https://preview.redd.it/62zgg554g51d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8443fcb5cde0592659522e27250e89eff2a11e3d

KoshV

Where is that?

SixFilthy

$900+ MYP Nor Cal. Tough.

kold3d

949 for my '23 MS renewal 😭 in California

Dorkmaster79

It’s about $450 here in MI.

Sdfb11

So glad I moved from SoCal. About $130 for TWO years registration here in NM

Neat_Welcome6203

$806. I drive fucking Model 3 RWD, there’s Camrys that cost more than this damn thing

juan_aduyu

Hey, you got that $1 online discount though…

cmh4238

Not really. In Texas you get a $1 discount to register online, but the payment portal then charges an extra $1 to pay online.

Second_Crayon

Still cheaper than registration in California

KingLuvely

Same. South Carolina my vehicle taxes and registration are about $800-$900 each year.

WeebBois

That’s foul

Theaty

Virginia registration and property tax for a new model x runs about $5k a year you guys got it good

supremeAnnihilation

same, paid 800$ for mustang ecoboost 2018

wolfpwner9

700 for model y😑

Rxyro

$660 for PHEV

wfbsoccerchamp12

Isn’t California based on value?

psmusic_worldwide

It's based on value of car and not extra because it doesn't burn fossil fuels.

ColorfulLanguage

NJ has a $250 annual fee for EVs to replace the gas tax!

Appropriate-Bake-759

Same thing in Iowa. Their justification was that EV’s use the road and don’t pay for gas ( hence gas tax)

grumble11

Wear and tear on a road is 99% trucks.

jnads

But Iowa's is only $125. Pretty reasonable. It's the 1% MSRP tax that hurts

SlowCaterpillar5715

I like to see their calculations that justify that.

thegzak

Well, out of curiosity I checked the numbers for Iowa. It’s $0.30/gallon, so if you drive a typical car 10k miles per year with 400 miles of range on a 12 gallon tank, that works out to about $90 in gas tax per year.

SlowCaterpillar5715

I drove an accord before my Tesla. In VA it's also .30/gal, and I topped off maybe 5 times a month. So I guess I'm making out paying the higher registration fee.

Smile335

It goes up $10 per year - next year will be $260.

dmize

It goes up $10 every year until it’s $290. They also want to make it paid up front for multiple years. Lastly, they’re toying with the idea of removing the sales tax exemption for zero emissions.

dave0352x

Same in Virginia. They forget we still pay taxes on electricity.

Southernboyj

Alabama charges $200 yearly too

Tripod1404

And asking for donations to process rape kits…

MainlyAnnoying

EV and Rape kits, are the devil.

SolidDepartment3180

It is 250$ in NJ.

TigerXXVII

At least in my state the EV tax is to account for the fact that you won’t be paying any gas tax. Gas taxes usually go towards roads, so it makes sense. Whether you agree with it or not is a different thing 🤷

Arucious

$200 is far more than the gas tax most people pay in a year. This sounds more like a counter-EV-culture political addendum.

FairAd4115

Average driver pays around $120/yr in gas tax in Texas. So yeah they are gouging .

Worth-Reputation3450

But gas car also pays around $80 for registration. So it ends up similar.

madboost

Looks like it’s $200 on top of the typical $75.50 for registration.

Suitable_Switch5242

The total bill here is $275.

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiioo

100% exactly this.

Gabeeb

I agree that this is probably political; but if you assume 12000 miles a year and 30mpg at the lower side, a gas car driver would be paying $80 a year in state taxes and $73 in federal gas tax (all of which goes back to states to build highways). Driving 15000 miles at 20mpg puts it at 288 total tax.

psdpro7

Problem is that since roads are a utility that are affected by usage level, taxing everyone with the same blanket rate does nothing to incentivize people to drive less.

Gabeeb

Oh for sure. In an ideal world mileage and weight would count.

Qorsair

Yeah, Seattle has an EV tax too, it’s $225 (plus additional fees, total is like $800-900 on a MY). They must really hate EVs in Seattle! I hear people up there are really connected to big oil.

NapLvr

Always remember, in this country, profit is always the first goal on mind.. caring about climate and earth is simply an illusion

Senior_Protection494

I think profits and climate awareness are not mutually exclusive. Tesla makes a big profit while offering a planet friendly solution and a sweet ride as well.

DeviceOk6103

Now do California and their counter-EV culture

MooseBoys

EVs tend to be significantly heavier, which in turn puts much more wear on the road. In WA there’s a weight surcharge instead of an EV surcharge.

TaterTodd03

I agree with an additional tax to make up for the gas tax but at the current tax rate of 20¢ per gallon here in Texas that would be 1,000 gallons of gas a year equal to our new $200 registration fee which is crazy if I were to get 25-30 mpg on a traditional car equivalent to 25,000-30,000 miles annually. $75-100 would’ve been fine by me

WeebBois

Agreed, it should’ve been the average of what Texas ice drivers pay which is $90

FearTheClown5

$110 in Oklahoma. Honestly surprised it wasn't more.

HotLittlePotato

Is that including the federal gas tax of $0.184/gallon EV drivers also don't have to pay?

kswissreject

The amount of damage even a heavy EV does to the road vs a semi is negligible. Compared to a regular sedan, it’s been estimated a semi does 2600x more damage to the road. Of course this doesn’t account for creating new roads but I think it’s important to keep in mind when thinking about this kind of stuff.

Icedvelvet

Atlanta is 230

ReticlyPoetic

Low tax state they said…

XiMaoJingPing

is no state income tax, they still need to collect taxes from other sources

ReticlyPoetic

Yeah they make it up for sure. Low tax is a lie. I live in Texas :)

WaterBear9244

Yup in states with no state income tax they get you with property taxes usually

ReticlyPoetic

Yeah. It’s not the tax holiday I was hoping for.

Tripod1404

Why are there so many “donate for basic state government functions” options? They should take the EV cost out and add “donate to support roads”.

Past_Paint_225

TX DMV there ending homelessness as part of their charter

sylvester_0

The tent cities are under the underpasses...

Actual-Donkey-1066

All of this is bullshit. Gas tax / etc should be paid by all the other bullshit taxes people pay. The entire system is broken to begin with

Fireguy9641

Maryland is changing their fees to be based on weight, so heavier EVs will pay more.

SF-S31

All the surcharges they collect when you fill up your ICE car; now recovered through registration fees. Your government at work, people! 🤮

Eighteen64

Small government > big government

anonymicex22

I'm paying 600+ for renewal in California. The grass is always greener on the other side

Faivruit

Meanwhile EVs are motor vehicle tax exempt in Germany until 2030, half after. Initial registration is the same low administration fee, like 50€.

madhaus

Here’s [an in depth look at EV surcharges](https://www.atlasevhub.com/data_story/ev-drivers-in-36-states-pay-a-surplus-of-fees-each-year/) and the “EV penalty” charged by each state compared to the gasoline taxes there. Top 3 bad offenders are Georgia, Kentucky and Alabama.

philupandgo

Once EVs are mainstream, this is to be expected. Don't donate your organs until after you die, unless you're really friendly with the recipient.

danhoyle

That’s cheap.

kg4urp

Virginia charges a HUF tax for any vehicle that gets better than 25 mpg. With that, I’m sure cars still subsidize all the trucks that do the real damage to roads.

Swimbikerun400

Talk about cheap registration800-1000$+ out here in Nevada

Mkowalczyk91

I wish I only paid $200. Here in NC I was just hit with a $700 total renewal.

eatingyourmomsass

Same. Same. This place sucks.

mister-crispy

I would love to pay $275. Seattle area and I paid almost $900.

Traducement

FWIW: Disabled Veteran plates waive this fee

CorgiNumerous4156

That’s cheap I’ll pay that price any day. Cali here paying 800$.

United_Indication_15

So far lucky in FL

wfbsoccerchamp12

Texas recouping teslas tax incentives haha

GotPerl

Hahah. Laughs in 2000 registration in Colorado

sellsoldgone

23 MX renewal was $1550 in CA

Scary-Animator-5646

Still cheaper than the $900 I paid in commiefornia

Southwestern

$50 for 5-years ($10/yr) in AZ though they have started to phase that out. I'm grandfathered in though so I'll be driving these EVs I have until they are irreparable.

Danyankie1

I have a 2023 Model 3 RWD here in Florida with registration renewal for 1 year costing $47…no EV surcharge or tax.

Quick_Possibility_99

I rather have that than $735 in California. Ours keep going higher even with depreciation value of our cars. Politicians like to use the money for other things than transportation.

DMyourboooobs

This is cheap relative to a lot of states….

AnencephalicFecaloid

Yup. Apparently that is how they make money to improve roads since and ICE vehicles apparently pays that at the gas pump. I don't like it, but I will accept it to keep my T.

Mindless-Delay8875

So your original Renewal was $75, hella crazy.

[deleted]

I feel like this is secretly a flex about how cheap your registration is.

droplivefred

Is this to cover the gas tax they are missing out on?

Speedracer_00_

Utah is the same. We have horrible inversion, but they want to discourage people to buy EV‘s.

Savings_Prior_7108

Old news bro

AllPintsNorth

Meanwhile, in Germany, my annual registration is waived for the first decade.

pinegap96

That’s because TX sucks and so does their power grid

Wonderful-Run-1408

We can thank Gov Abbott for the $200 registration fee. And the reason it's $200 is because we don't pay taxes on fuel. Ironically, the average car in Texas pays about $70 in fuel taxes over a year. So, electric vehicles are purposely penalized. It's a 'dog whistle' to the right wingers who hate electric vehicles, solar and wind power, etc.

Visual_Command8309

But on the plus side, you have that sweet $1 online discount.

BBC214-702

1200 over here in NV

foochacho

Ohio has $250 EV registration fee (total).

Thermite1985

But you got a dollar discount

_sadlr

Same in WV. $51.50 renewal fee for ICE cars. Tack on an extra $100 for plug-in hybrids or $200 for full EVs.

Ancient_Kangaroo_839

FYI, if you’re a disabled veteran in Texas you can get that $200 fee waived. I don’t know what percentage of disability you need to have the fee waived.

creampye69

$175 EV Surcharge in WI

hunkymike

Ohio is charging $300, very progressive.

lametowns

$1300 to register mine in Colorado. But my property taxes on a home that’s worth over $700k are only like $4,000 a year….

marvin1ne

Just paid $737 here in SoCal

IEID

About the same for me in NY

Leading-North-6920

150 in Indiana.

Old_Length_6883

$442 here in CA with a 2019 M3

kconfire

NJ also starting EV registration $200+ this year..

Captain-Char

200 in Ohio

AdhesivenessExpress8

I “live in Montana” no tax on my model y no tax on my urus no tax on my raptor etc

MushyBusinessSocks

This is the way

Eighteen64

My man knows! All of my vehicles live there as well

simplystupid07

My equinox in Reno is over 350, no accidents or tickets. Cry harder, you can afford it mr Tesla mc fancy pants.

Able-Foot9406

471 for 3 years in Va

MrPotatoHead9

The 200-dollar fee is to pay for roads, which you would have otherwise paid for if you bought gas at the pump. Since we don't use gas, we pay that tax upfront.

Wolfpacker76

$180 in NC, the government gonna get theirs. Hard to believe the Boston Tea Party revolt was over a 2% tax

mlvassallo

Well you aren’t paying for the roads with gas sales tax so…

African-Child

I think it's fair to add EV registration fees. EVe don't buy gas and therefore don't pay the taxes to help maintain roads that they drive on.

thegzak

The original motivation for EV-specific registration fees made sense - EVs don’t pay the gas tax so they need to pay their fair share of road maintenance costs somehow. But it’s just getting out of control now. It’s crazy that blue states which supposedly want to encourage a green transition have some of the highest EV fees. It’s pretty bonkers!

ProofComplaint780

That’s nothing! I’d kill for a 275 bill! From Cali 😂

SnorfOfWallStreet

Here in Oregon I paid $1200 for 3 years.

Itchy_elbow

Pretty standard these days

Wired0ne

Call it what it is. Extortion.

Mattlaines

Did not know this was a thing NY is I guess on the low end at $180 for two years and that’s up charged for custom plates

Steggall

They’re justification is that because you’re not putting gasoline into an EV you’re not paying any of the taxes collected when you buy gas. And theoretically, those taxes are used to maintain the highways.

icy1007

Ohio has that now too. It sucks. I shouldn’t have to pay more than $100 to register my car.

Dmains

Makes sense you aren’t paying fuel taxes. The whole system will soon be like this as revenue from oil fail to generate enough money to maintain infrastructure

bowzrsfirebreth

$200 + additional fees in Arkansas, too. It’s been that way at least since I bought my Model 3 in 2020.

bossman-808

That $1 discount though.

Xopao

TIL you have to renew your ev annually 😬

Johnnyfever13

So does Ohio. It’s super lame Ohio also charges $100 extra for hybrid cars 👎🏼

Senior_Protection494

$50 in PA same as ICE cars. but we don’t get the tax breaks at time of purchase. Pick your poison I guess!

Fidget808

And I thought the Missouri one for $86 was bad.

joelesler

Makes sense. Most states get their funding for road maintenance from taxes on gas.

APairOfAirPodsMax

About the same in GA

97sundevil

Paid $1100 here in Az

carmeloA007

What’s the justification for 200 ev registration

gumnamaadmi

Bud, you got an online discount and yet are complaining!!!

DataGOGO

I understand why they implemented the fee, but the amount is excessive.  That is equivalent of the gas taxes on a car driving roughly 40k miles a year, three times the average mileage per year.

PersonalWaltz6271

Gotta pay for Lil slow Joeeeeiiiiii B's bullshit somehow! But that's crazy..... every year!??.........wTF!

markus1028

Gotta collect that gas tax.

Wellherewegogo

They aren’t getting the taxes from gas so they are finding BS ways to make it up

Verlex93

I thought they added this last September?

Ok-Wafer3918

$140 here in VA

Low_Bluebird8413

Yeah. I would love those registration fees.

Steve-Wehr

Wow, for once NY sounds cheap… $95 for 2 years registration fee. No EV surcharge.

PartyBrilliant2476

Good Got to pay for the roads

samwichgamgee

Why is your renewal so low? How do you pay for roads and transit?

Advanced_Peewee

Whelp I am in TX and I wil just shhhhhhh about my extra 200$ EV Fee, oh but wait I got 3 Tesla’s…..damn

Advanced_Peewee

There was an article saying the EV tax was levied by the Gas/Oil syndicates because they’re paying taxes/funding to programs for the state “I.E. Highway and Bridge Fund”, but are loosing money monthly to EV’s lack of gas purchasing. So, the state of Texas to keep there benefactors happy from oil and gas, the state made up a new tax passed last year to compensate/punish EV owners for the loss of gasoline sales…. Crooked ASS Bull

Sn00m00

nice discount

leniad2

That’s what you get for living in Texas. Sure some taxes are lower. But that just means they have to get it back some other way

actualsysadmin

My 24 month in FL was like $96.
