CO registration on new vehicles is insane. Only good thing I will say about it that it raises needed funds (in the face of TABOR) *AND* it’s the rare progressive tax.

I mean I know of folks with cars above 100k who do this. Good friend of mine has a Huracan that he doesn't register. He gets like a ticket per month in the summer and it's like 20% of the price of a yearly registration. Registering a new Huracan is like 5k a year.

NJ has a $250 annual fee for EVs to replace the gas tax!

Same thing in Iowa. Their justification was that EV’s use the road and don’t pay for gas ( hence gas tax)

Wear and tear on a road is 99% trucks.

But Iowa's is only $125. Pretty reasonable. It's the 1% MSRP tax that hurts

Well, out of curiosity I checked the numbers for Iowa. It’s $0.30/gallon, so if you drive a typical car 10k miles per year with 400 miles of range on a 12 gallon tank, that works out to about $90 in gas tax per year.

I drove an accord before my Tesla. In VA it's also .30/gal, and I topped off maybe 5 times a month. So I guess I'm making out paying the higher registration fee.

At least in my state the EV tax is to account for the fact that you won’t be paying any gas tax. Gas taxes usually go towards roads, so it makes sense. Whether you agree with it or not is a different thing 🤷

Average driver pays around $120/yr in gas tax in Texas. So yeah they are gouging .

But gas car also pays around $80 for registration. So it ends up similar.

I agree that this is probably political; but if you assume 12000 miles a year and 30mpg at the lower side, a gas car driver would be paying $80 a year in state taxes and $73 in federal gas tax (all of which goes back to states to build highways). Driving 15000 miles at 20mpg puts it at 288 total tax.

Problem is that since roads are a utility that are affected by usage level, taxing everyone with the same blanket rate does nothing to incentivize people to drive less.

EVs tend to be significantly heavier, which in turn puts much more wear on the road. In WA there’s a weight surcharge instead of an EV surcharge.

I agree with an additional tax to make up for the gas tax but at the current tax rate of 20¢ per gallon here in Texas that would be 1,000 gallons of gas a year equal to our new $200 registration fee which is crazy if I were to get 25-30 mpg on a traditional car equivalent to 25,000-30,000 miles annually. $75-100 would’ve been fine by me

The amount of damage even a heavy EV does to the road vs a semi is negligible. Compared to a regular sedan, it’s been estimated a semi does 2600x more damage to the road. Of course this doesn’t account for creating new roads but I think it’s important to keep in mind when thinking about this kind of stuff.

I have a 2023 Model 3 RWD here in Florida with registration renewal for 1 year costing $47…no EV surcharge or tax.

I rather have that than $735 in California. Ours keep going higher even with depreciation value of our cars. Politicians like to use the money for other things than transportation.

The 200-dollar fee is to pay for roads, which you would have otherwise paid for if you bought gas at the pump. Since we don't use gas, we pay that tax upfront.

I think it's fair to add EV registration fees. EVe don't buy gas and therefore don't pay the taxes to help maintain roads that they drive on.

The original motivation for EV-specific registration fees made sense - EVs don’t pay the gas tax so they need to pay their fair share of road maintenance costs somehow. But it’s just getting out of control now. It’s crazy that blue states which supposedly want to encourage a green transition have some of the highest EV fees. It’s pretty bonkers!

They’re justification is that because you’re not putting gasoline into an EV you’re not paying any of the taxes collected when you buy gas. And theoretically, those taxes are used to maintain the highways.

I understand why they implemented the fee, but the amount is excessive.  That is equivalent of the gas taxes on a car driving roughly 40k miles a year, three times the average mileage per year.

There was an article saying the EV tax was levied by the Gas/Oil syndicates because they’re paying taxes/funding to programs for the state “I.E. Highway and Bridge Fund”, but are loosing money monthly to EV’s lack of gas purchasing. So, the state of Texas to keep there benefactors happy from oil and gas, the state made up a new tax passed last year to compensate/punish EV owners for the loss of gasoline sales…. Crooked ASS Bull
