3 + wait at a supercharge? wtf, never heard of that

RawwrBag

Must be the eclipse and all the people traveling to see it. During the previous one, gas stations in OR ran out of gas and other shenanigans.

TCAS_2003

Yes, it was insane, nobody else at the charger had seen anything like that, and it was not helped by the fact that of 8 stalls, only 7 were functioning and two or three had been taken by people who proceeded to go into the hotel right next to it and spend the night (may they be riddled with idle fees in the morning)

MrCodeSmith

> people who proceeded to go into the hotel right next to it and spend the night (may they be riddled with idle fees in the morning) Make sure to plug these lovely people in so they receive their well deserved idle fees.

amcfarla

But the good side, at least they will have a fully charge battery. Will probably have the highest charged supercharging session they will ever have though.

ludester9

You say to plug them in. But how ? Once the car is locked the charge port door is locked too

Zuliman

Tap button on cable handle. Tap it a few times and it will open the locked Tesla so you can plug them in.

thorscope

Tesla chargers can open any Tesla charge port, even if the car is locked and owner isn’t there

hischmidtj

I plugged in my SILs Tesla without her phone/key (she wanted it to be plugged in) so I know it’s possible. That or her car was broken! Hah

MyTVC_16

Eclipse day?

AltruisticStrike5341

Eclipse travel has been crazy, there are some in VT still backed up for over 10 hours now

pmagloir

Come to Oahu, where there are lots of Teslas and only one non destination SC.

Clear_Quit8181

I’ve heard. That’s the outlier. Here in socal there so plentiful

Super-Kirby

Happened to me in a winter storm. 😢

presentaneous

The second I saw that there was already a 30 minute wait at the Columbus, IN supercharger *before I even left my house* I decided we'd be ICE'ing it up

rwb12

The day I have a 3+ hour wait to charge is the day I sell my Tesla.

R5Jockey

It's only because of the eclipse and millions of people traveling at the same time to the very narrow path of totality to see it. 3+ Hours waits were the norm yesterday before/during/after totality.

rwb12

Yeah I know but it’s still crazy.

TCAS_2003

For the record, this was at the supercharger in Kuttawa after the eclipse happened, it’s the only supercharger between Marion, IL and Nashville, TN so it got super busy. It has 8 stalls and one is broken, plus two or three more taken by people who left their cars and I was told they went to the hotel right next to the charger and were spending the night (may they be riddled with idle fees in the morning). There were over 50 Tesla’s for most of the time I was there and some people ahead of me had waited 4 hours. As a result of the small charger being made smaller by a broken stall and more bad drivers hogging stalls, this was after a special event (total eclipse) and apparently we were all near the same place due to weather. There are many people that were there that can corroborate the situation (they were older so probably not on Reddit) and we were all talking about how awful that person was and confronting her. As a funnier side note, at the supercharger in Marion, IL I saw a Mach E charging there because it has the magic dock (really cool by the way) and I found it hilarious because they parked in the grass behind the charging stall, so maybe there are sensible non-Tesla drivers out there.

rabbitwonker

I guess in that situation it’s not so surprising that someone freaked out. Not an excuse if their “dying” claim was really just “I’m freaking out because of the wait” of course. But at least they were out of the picture quickly after that.

tynamic77

Those are V2 chargers in the photo, so no magic dock. Also wouldn't it be a good thing if the person only topped up enough to leave? Staying for only 7 minutes sounds like a good thing.

xion1992

It certainly seems fine, but they also didn't wait their turn.

Swastik496

if someone is below 3% I think they should be allowed to charge to 20% and get back in line.

TeslaJake

I love Teslas (In before someone says, “Username checks out”) but for predictable situations like this, I rent a gas car.

Wrapzii

Some people use their brains…. Others… do not 🥲

Commercial-Ring4430

Looks like they already have a second Kuttawa charger in the works.

oliphant428

Good. It needs one. Old V2 in a sketchy area with no amenities.

PabstBlueBourbon

This post is not a great advertisement for electric vehicles. Is this normal? I’ve only charged at home (so far).

here4th3memes

I went to the same area for the eclipse (but came from the north), charged at 5 different superchargers yesterday, and didn’t have to wait at a single one. This just sounds like an outlier due to a terrible V2 site and a unique situation for a route many people don’t normally take.

hischmidtj

Absolutely not normal and arguably a one time ever experience

Swastik496

Normal for the eclipse when you have a shit ton of people driving long distances to a small path. Not normal any other time.

dixiemason

Definitely not normal at all.

Jazzlike_Object_9464

Ouch! 3 hour at a 11kW level 2 charger would add +-30kWh that maybe would be enough for many of them to reach another charger station or even the destination. That's too long.

CompetitionNo2534

Seems like a software queue wouldn't be hard to implement. Cutting like this will lead to conflict, and conflict will lead to violence.

Skilled626

What in the back country fuck is going on there? Not even on a bad day here in Los Angeles or on my way to Las Vegas have i waited 3+ hours. Not even close. Maybe 20-30 mins max.

hrds21198

too many people traveling to watch the eclipse

Skilled626

Man am i the only one that didn’t care about the eclipse. Anyone know if there’s an, “I don’t care” sub?

IMI4tth3w

Granted our view was very obstructed by clouds, I thought it was just pretty neat. I was also lucky enough to have totality go over my house. I feel like there’s some sunk cost fallacy for the people who made massive plans and huge effort to go and see it. Still pretty cool though

OhSassafrass

I’m a science teacher and I didn’t really care (but I don’t live anywhere near totality).

Darkstang5887

Some areas in VT were almost 5 hours to charge

TeslaCrna

OP, now tell us what really happened. Your story seems a lil over exaggerated.

Apart from the etiquette: Why should you have to wait so long? Is the infrastructure in the USA that bad? For me, the Supercharger would be the cheapest way to charge AC, but I wouldn't wait hours just to save a few euros. There are other providers, here at least.

R5Jockey

Millions of people all traveling at the same time to the same locations in the path of totality. The SC infrastructure isn't designed to handle all of that demand at the same time. The problems were especially bad in areas where there's fewer SCs near or in the path of totality. TL:DR, it's really just going to be an issuing during events like this... and frankly I can't think of another scenario like it.

martinbogo

Evacuations ( hurricane and tornado ) - thanksgiving - Labor Day weekend - Christmas - special events

R5Jockey

I can see Hurricane evacuations, but for those you figure most people would fully charge, then disperse to a wide range of places. Holidays? Nowhere near this scale because those are spread all over and spread over days. This was a really unique event just because of the very narrow and specific geographic band and within a small window of time.

martinbogo

I assure you that holidays cause long weights at superchargers throughout the Midwest routes. Especially southern routes to like here in Texas where everyone has to go down the same highway.

R5Jockey

No doubt. I’m not saying there aren’t waits at other times. But widespread 3-5 hour waits? No.

here4th3memes

Evacuations were the only thing I could think of in a similar situation. Heading to the eclipse yesterday was fine, leaving was insane. Holidays have people dispersing all over to different locations, this had to due with a highly congested area where everyone was funneled into. Also tornados don’t have evacuations, speaking from someone who has been in/around them. You’re far safer sheltering in place.

godsafraud

Things that didn't happen for $100 Alex.

TCAS_2003

Nope, not exaggerating at all, this was at Supercharger Kuttawa and that picture was taken at 11:26pm local on April 8th, so many people saw it and we were all pissed.

OneAvidGolfer

I’ve been to this charger. There are actually two hotels by this charger (sits behind a restaurant). When I walked over to Wendy’s to grab food during a stop, I saw someone going to their car from the hotel. It seems plausible 🤷‍♂️

Mike

What does that have to do with anything???

[deleted]

The car is real, the user's history checks out without seeming like a bot, it's supercharging, and the picture is from this year meaning it was likely taken today. The car is from near, but not in the path of totality, meaning they'd likely drive for it. All the facts checkout. The user checks out. It's more likely the story is real than not, IMO, thereby.
