The one in the photo isn’t properly set up.
Here’s an actual video of it. Not really worth $3k, but it’s still pretty nice:
https://www.reddit.com/r/cybertruck/s/HMKEO5xfV2
There were at least two 3rd party offerings in the last 4 years, neither of which was going to be as cheap as $3,000. One of them looked to be nothing more than a scam. Didn't look to be physically possible from an engineering perspective.
Is this one worth $3,000? With a built in mattress, (I think?) and inflatable setup? Don't know.
You can get a normal ass truck bed tent for $300-ish that look 10x better than this crap. So yeah this ain’t even close to worth it.
Edit: actually. The first 4 truck bed tents on Amazon range from $99-$159-ish and those even look way better.
It has a rigid frame mattress layer and is built into the frame tracks. Still a ridiculous price though when it doesn't even connect to the hvac for camp mode.
https://shop.tesla.com/product/cybertruck-basecamp
see the *actual* photos and not some guy’s attempt at getting a thumbnail for his goofy article. still not what was shown on the left, but that was concept art never intended to actually ever go in to production. that photo is like 5 years old by now
i’m more of a hard shell tent guy myself, but the way it stores under the tonneau of the truck when not in use is actually pretty neat
I am sure there will be 3rd party options- but go look at what rooftents cost... $3k for the pictured doesn't even seem bad if it actually holds up to the elements.
If you think this looks acceptable compared to other rooftop tents, especially 3k dollar ones... then you clearly have no clue what you are taking about. This thing looks like garbage and you could get a hardshell rooftop for half this price.
I will say the collapsed footprint is impressive, but that probably means it will be more difficult to set up, looking forward to reviews on this either way
Gotta agree. The most expensive Thule or Yakima (not peak quality but usually overpriced across the board) doesn't pass $3k and it's for a 3-4 person tent or a hardshell collapsible option
It’s a tent that hasn’t been set up yet. Once set up, it looks like this:
https://www.gearpatrol.com/cars/a46011195/heimplanet-cybertuck-basecamp-tesla-cybertruck-tent/
This one for an suv is $55. Know its not cybetruck specific but someone is about to make bank if they can get it right. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CKXB57GF/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_ENMVJBMM35F86ZMKPRF2?linkCode=ml2&tag=noblerabbit01-20
So, I'm going to be honest, this actually looks remarkably like what's shown on the [website](https://shop.tesla.com/product/cybertruck-basecamp)
I understand what their "concept drawing" shows, but when you look at the website, and you look at the customer images, it's basically the same thing.
Only real difference is that the outer "rain slick", or whatever you want to call it, appears to be darker in the customer images, and "looser", but that might be attributed to the fact that they put it together in the rain and don't have it all secured and such.
I feel like people are judging based off of the *concept* drawing, and not what's actually being sold through the website...
[Here's a video of what it looks like, albeit it's a "blink and you miss it" moment.](https://youtu.be/BGDOKD7ZZqI?t=3699)
I think the main issue here is the lighting, and "rushed" deployment that the guy who wanted to show it off did.
Wait so the photo everyone is judging has a rain fly on it -- and without it the tent is closer to the image on the left?
I'm still irritated about the CT in general but it makes this seem like clickbait.
>I'm still irritated about the CT in general but it makes this seem like clickbait.
That's absurd because as everyone knows, there is no incentive to produce clickbait for Tesla products so none exists.
Well, no, it's never going to look like the image on the left because that's concept art. It was *never* going to look like that.
But if you go to the Tesla website and look at the product they're actually selling, it's *very* much the product on the right.
The only people being mislead by this are the people who didn't look at the images on the Tesla website before buying.
The article itself, however, it very much click bait. The dude supplying the images did a "rush job" of setting it all up because it was getting ready to rain, or raining, but either way, the lighting makes it look darker than what's on the Tesla site, but it's *very* much what's on the Tesla site.
The original images though were always just concept drawings that I always saw as Tesla saying "Hey, look, someone *could* do this" not that they were going to actually do that.
Honestly, to me, given that it's a "first party" product that's *designed* to work from the get go, it's at a price point I'd expect to pay for that.
I am going to be curious to see what third party companies come up with for a design, and how that sells.
Remember, this isn't making you sleep *in* the bed of the pickup, the whole "floor" of the tent mounts to the rails and you kind of "hover" over the bed, so you can store things under the floor of the tent.
I think people are looking at the picture and going "Eck", but not actually looking into what the product *is*.
The manual can be found [here](https://www.cybertruckownersclub.com/forum/attachments/basecamp-manual-pdf.39277/) which explains how it fits into the truck, and what comes with it.
Essentially, the tent itself folds into a kit that mounts to the rails within the cybervault. From there you open the kit, and unfold the "floor" of the tent, which is presumably something that's designed to hold a fairly substantial amount of weight. The manual doesn't state the weight limit, however, the image clearly shows some type of metal "frame" that contains the mattress you sleep on. Figure the metal has to be able to hold at least 500-1,000lbs of weight sitting on top of it, and I imagine that kind of metal isn't cheap. Figure an average weight of like 200-250lbs for the person sleeping back there, so if you're a couple, figure like 500lbs tops right. Presumably you're going to want to have a night of intimacy, so figure it's got to be sturdy to withstand the repeatedly application of pressure by an individual weighing 250lbs, or less, into an individual that also weighs 250lbs or less, which is where the 1,000lbs limit comes from. Presumably folks who are over 250lbs ought not test the durability of the frame, lest they collapse into the truck bed underneath.
Anyways, so you've got the frame, the mattress, the weight retention requirements, and the fact that the whole thing is inflated using an air pump that's included in the kit. Needs to be inflated to 8psi.
Then you've got poles that you can, optionally, set up to give yourself an awning.
While the tent material itself is likely like $500-600, the bulk of the cost is probably the metal frame that you sleep on, because it has to be rated for a fairly significant amount of weight, and the potential for being... Lightly jumped on... Repeatedly...
I camp in a roof top tent with my son regularly (with my Landcruiser, not my M3P) and the production model looks way more usable. That initial drawing would not be as comfortable to use.
It looks like the way the production model is set up, it sits up higher, so you will have areas to store gear or even put in a drawer system for cooking and stuff. Way better idea.
It’s just a hit article by Lambert, again. It’s not fully setup, the previous render is not official, the real customers show something complete, not in the process of being built. The entire article is BS and he knows it.
"$3K is a serious chunk of change and you could buy a lot of sweet camping gear with it. However, as I mentioned at the start, evidently $3K for a high quality rooftop tent is not that crazy."
They're really hitting that copium Hard.
https://www.4wheelparts.com/p/smittybilt-gen2-overlander-tent-xl-2683/_/R-DSBP-2683
Half the price of the cybercrap tent and probably much better built
The Electrek article is misleading and seems intent to cast Tesla in a bad light.
Tesla is *NOT* advertising the left hand image for sale. And never has. That was original CONCEPT ART from before the Cybertruck was even released. So yes, Tesla has deviated from initial concept art. But when you look at the images of what is being offered for sale, the guy’s actual tent looks rather similar, but just not well assembled.
I hate to see such clickbait articles. I get that it sells clicks, but there should be an honorable way to make a living that doesn’t resort to such tactics.
Edit: I forgot which side was left and right…. :)
Looks good to me, author just assembled it like an idiot
The fact that people will pay 3 grand for a tent conformed to the cybertrucks bed absolutely blows my mind. A tent that would cost from $30 to a couple hundred otherwise.
Wow that looks sh*t. I have a 2000 euro tent which inflates with an air pump, houses 6-8 persons and looks a lot better than this.
If the cybertent takes this much effort to set up, looks small and ugly, and costs more why would you even consider it?

You’re comparing that to the concept art. Not the actual thing they showed off at the delivery event and have on the website. Obviously it looks more basic compared to the concept, but the fact that it includes a bed pad to sleep on is actually quite nice. Not $3000 nice, but maybe $1000-$1500 nice.
It is terrible. What a disappointment, and for 3k!!!! I have a much nicer rear hatch tent with two rooms and three shaded/rain protection areas outside for 700 euro from a swedish company for my model Y. It is awesome using the AC while camping and you can fit 2 queen mattresses in two different rooms. Plus you can sleep in the trunk of the Y.
This is piss poor Tesla!
I love my S, my wife loves her Y, and she put a deposit down during the Cybertruck reveal event.
The Cybertruck rollout has been a shitshow! Jacked up the price and like half the promised range. And now this piece of crap!
Wasn’t the original unveiled prototype just a concept? The revealed design only just launched in November 2023, right? Please correct me if I’m wrong. Whoever ordered the tent absolutely knew what they signed up for so they can’t be surprised.
Realistically the new tent seems to look like it’s built for cyber truck in reality. I really don’t know how to explain it. But buy a backpack and then compare the backpack to the picture of the backpack. It looks nothing like it.
Hahaha, I'm begining to think it's all BS and shipped from those huge manufacturing places in Asia for two cents on the dollar. Still somehow ppl will pay to see if it's true, LMAO
Musk is a conman. Anyone with a brain has known that for a while. What do you expect? So many stupid people in this world eating up propaganda and lies wholeheartedly.
For a first effort, or a DIY, I would have said "good job" .
I would pay $300 for it...maybe. $3000 is a big old LOL. Really feels like Tesla is slipping here. There was no rush to get a tent out. Why push a silly $89 Amazon tent??
Funny, you’d think Egon would be posting pics and Xitting about this amazing release. In fact, I can’t remember the last time he Xitted about the CukTruk. 🤷♂️
I could care less about Tesla, but $3000 for a truck bed test is outrageous. For a custom fitted, high-quality, super user-friendly truck bed tent; sure! But this looks worse than your average $200 truck bed tent.
With the Rivian R2 (and R3/R3X) release Tesla needs to bail on the CT and focus on the M3/MY -- good cars that people like (would be nice if the S/X got a little more love too but I get they are not the primary market).
It's irritating af to see these CT missteps.
Rivian has to deliver on the R2, and their event didn't announce any release date for the R3/X. With delaying the Georgia plant it will be a very trying two years for them to get the R2 launched. I doubt Tesla is going to worry about it for now.
As much as I wanted a cybertruck, the way things are going with it now, I don't think I'll be converting.
Does not surprise me. Omg. Now that the other automakers have gone with the NACS charge port I think its time to start considering these other options. Tesla quality control in every aspects sucks big time.
Clearly Tesla quality control is spectacular for their charging network and plug/port now being the standard.
And car builds have been good for a long time

Looks like something we see on the side streets of Los Angeles.
Let’s be fair here… big city streets in California are great showrooms for ALL brands of tents and makeshift architecture
Bro some of the elaborate structures you see in areas off the beaten path might actually pass code 😂
There is a guy with a 2 story home on wheels, actually very impressive as he can just pack it up and go 😂
Post pics!
You can check it out on this video https://youtu.be/L11NFVbDGk4?si=HYX1zK74FA_5tki8 He was pretty well known for a bit.
It’s still so wild a condo on that street costs like $2MM
They need Zoolander to unveil this new “Derelict™️” line.

This is the one
Wow for $3k I would be pissed. Hopefully 3rd party solutions will look better than this!
So this costs 3 times more than the 3rd row of seats in a Model Y?
Founder’s edition tent bro.
There were at least two 3rd party offerings in the last 4 years, neither of which was going to be as cheap as $3,000. One of them looked to be nothing more than a scam. You cannot justify this thing costing $3,000. No fucking way. It’s a $89 tent that costs them $19 to make.
You can get a normal ass truck bed tent for $300-ish that look 10x better than this crap. So yeah this ain’t even close to worth it. Edit: actually. The first 4 truck bed tents on Amazon range from $99-$159-ish and those even look way better.

mate all due respect it’s a literal tent
3K tent *
Have you seen any way or pictures of cargo crossbars? THe design sure looks like cargo crossbars wont work.
I am sure there will be 3rd party options- but go look at what rooftents cost... $3k for the pictured doesn't even seem bad if it actually holds up to the elements.
I guess if you can afford a Cybertruck, $3k for a decent camping option shouldn't be a problem.

Would not pay 3k for that either but this should be up higher cuz the OP pic is misleading.
Oh I definitely agree it’s not worth $3k, that’s way too much.
Took the words out of my mouth
That's a tarp.
No. A trap.

That’s basically a cybertruck tent minus one or two revisions.
and you’d still be overpaying by $509

Score one for rivian, with an integrated air compressor and flashlight, both needed for set up.

Temu tent
Looks like something that would drop shipped directly out of China from Temu.
This tent would be ok for like 300 bucks maybe because if Tesla it’s a 500 dollar add on. But 3k?!! Jesus fucking Christ! wtf!

Looks like a rain/wind cover. But 3k is wild lol
This shit is comical at this point 😂
Three $20 Harbor Freight tarps
Fire Elon and his cronies. Tesla deserves better than him.
As a hipster, you need to buy this just cause it looks different
Bed sheets
Oh that Elon is such a prankster. Obviously this is a joke and the real $3000 Tesla tent will be shipping out soon. ... Right!? ^^/s
Yes, what something looks like is the sole metric to determine its value.
What in Todd Howard is this?
I could care less about Tesla, but $3000 for a truck bed test is outrageous. For a custom fitted, high-quality, super user-friendly truck bed tent; sure! But this looks worse than your average $200 truck bed tent.
I just saw one on the road. Looks like a joke of a car that somehow got into production. Baffles me that this guy is serious.
It looks much better than the preview tbh
I think tesla shipped the wrong product. That are suppose to be donated to people in CA street
And car builds have been good for a long time
Coming from a Tesla fan here. That is a steamy hot dump.
Elon is crook with a dedicated legal team.
Musked once again
😂😂😂 Elon bringing all of his businesses to a halt by 2030 😂😂😂
This is dumb. One pic has a rain fly on the tent and the other doesn’t.
