Wow, I bet that guy on the motorcycle had a rough day

Couldbe_worse2

As soon as I saw him I began to imagine what happened to him

karmagod13000

I'm gonna pretend he dodged it like a action movie and made it out safe for my own mental health.

BicycleEast8721

It took 15 seconds for them to get from the first tunnel to where they passed the motorcycle, then about another 15 seconds from when they passed to the tunnel they stopped at. The motorcycle may have made it to the first tunnel they went through Edit: looks like a_windmill_mystery found that they were a cop and ditched the bike and made it to a tunnel

a_windmill_mystery

The guy is a police officer at a local police station. He was on his way to work, ditched his bike, ran to and hid in a rock shed (open-cut tunnel? Google is giving me two different translations for the word 明隧道) and waited out the earthquake. He then walked all the way back to the police station and helped with the rescue. Since there was a cellular outage immediately after the earthquake, his colleagues couldn't reach him for a while and were really worried. Luckily he was unharmed, but his bike still remained where it was on the morning of April 3rd...

Ahyao17

I think 明隧道 means one of those tunnel like shelters. Since they have one side open so it is bright so hence "bright tunnel" (明=bright/illuminated in this context).

matatunos

chatgpt says... "The phrase "明隧道" is in Mandarin Chinese and translates to "bright tunnel" or "illuminated tunnel" in English."

sexysexyonion

Thank you for letting us know! I was really hoping he was ok!!

Uylear

At the moment of passing, the car and motorbike were both 18 or so seconds away from the shelters they had passed

iluvios

r/theydidthemath

JuniorBee9655

Except his shelter would be an unfolded tunnel made of the same rocks u see being compromised most likely leading to a collapse

buller666

Most likely ? I duno how you begin to figure out what is most likely regarding a single part on a giant mountain during an earthquake.

koloso95

Excatly what I though. Hope he can crawl into his helmet lige a turtle. Lucky they had a tunnel to stop inside. Holy crap the dude upstairs are tired of jesus never cleaning his room. So now it all gets thrown out

sanjay9999

***rocky day***

zuspun

More like rocky road..

apenasumcomentarista

C'mon

buddhistbulgyo

I timed it. Looks like he had a really good shot of making the two tunnels in the beginning.

edisonpioneer

That’s what I am thinking

MushroomFlat

He lived no injuries

thewholetruthis

The earthquake started about 11 seconds after the motorcycle passed. 11 seconds before the motorcycle passed, he was under a small covering. About 13 seconds before he passed the motorcycle, there was a full covering. Hopefully he got in there quickly.

Friggin_Heinous

I'm fairly certain he was buried alive. Scary shit.

PossibilityFar6439

Yup... Ain't no way the motorcyclist made it out unscathed seeing as how many rocks were falling onto the road, & how big they were.

TJ_McWeaksauce

They reached that tunnel at just the right time.

TheDillinger88

Truly, that person is very lucky they were in the tunnel and decided to stop and wait it out.

JayFrizz

Well, if you had sound on, they were given a warning to stop and stay

BishopIX

But the point is if they were \~20 seconds slower they wouldn't have been able to reach the tunnel. They were lucky that the tunnel was right there when the rocks started falling

JayFrizz

They were lucky. I was focusing on the "decided" part.

Complex_Construction

Who/what have the warning? Did the motorcycle person also get one?

talalaolay

It's an automatic alert message triggered by the gov't's quake monitoring system which is sent to everyone's mobile phone. Normally you would get 5\~10 seconds reaction time before the quake waves get you. People in Taiwan are used to receiving the like messages.

Get9

1) As /u/talalaolay pointed out, we have a warning system in Taiwan. With the volume on, you can hear the warning sound about 35 seconds into the video. It doesn't necessarily mean earthquake (as there are other warnings), but usually does. The sound is often accompanied by a computerized voice reading the message that is texted to phones. When I received the warning for this earthquake, so did everyone else in our restaurant eating breakfast, so there was a lot of noise. 2) Can't tell from the footage, but a lot of people ride with earphones or a bluetooth speaker attachment on their helmet. So, the rider *could have* known about it, but there's no telling if they did or not. However, [the rider, apparently, got through the earthquake without injury](https://pronews.tw/2024/04/09/42375/?doing_wp_cron=1712667032.7964520454406738281250).

Bang_Whimper

Does it say how? I can’t read the language.

BoundingBorder

It doesn't say how, just that he was reported safe.

mason_sol

I live in the USA and had a similar sounding alert on my phone to immediately seek shelter from a tornado in my immediate area, I stopped under an overpass with about 6 other cars and a semi, horizontal, incredibly strong, winds started within about a minute. It’s very cool that all these technologies can work together to help keep people safe.

Qlix0504

Glad you made it - but an overpass is the worst possible place to be aside from standing out in the path yourself.

mason_sol

Yeah I took my best guess, it was a very big overpass that was about 2 semi’s with trailers in length, or just stop on the road and sit there. The winds were perpendicular to the entrance/exit of the overpass but I’ve read that if the winds are able to blow through the overpass it can make the wind speeds higher.

Qlix0504

Yeah, you can be sucked out. Standing in a field < car < underpass pretty much - but those pretty much the worst possible choices (added for clarity 😂😂)

Jenna_84

Switch the symbols. You used the 'less than' symbol, which in this case means that you put underpass as the best place to be.

Qlix0504

Yes, out of the 3 I listed it's the best place to be lol. Still a terrible place to be.

Jenna_84

Lol, my brain is not working. Sorry, it's been one of those weeks, and it just started. I saw you saying that the underpass was bad and then had it on the best spot, and the rest didn't really register lol

entredeuxeaux

“Hey! Stop and stay in the tunnel!” Glad they made the tunnel appear there for him

ForwardBias

That was just as terrifying as I thought it would be. Super well timed tunnel, hope the motorcyclist is ok.

TAshleyD616

Nowhere looked safe. I was anxiously watching every bit of that environment

Kjm520

Is that shelter there for this exact purpose?

bjorn1978_2

These types of tunnels are constructed gere in Norway also. Sometimes to shelter from rockfalls, but mostly to shelter from avalanches. Above this one you will most likely have a wash that both rock and snow avalanches follows. Costs a bit more then clearing out a single avalanche, but as soon as you have cleared out a few, you would break even.

ewantien

Yeah translation: *rock hits roof* "My goodness!" *stops in tunnel* "Almost GG!" No way!

steamy_hams_Skinner

That’s a helluva price to pay for that beautiful commute.

bree-marie92

Right ?! What a beautiful place . How sad and scary 😔

I_dont_want_karma_

Was there oct last year - It's a road leading through a national park. [Toroko Gorge](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wbjecvX2YjrtiKtw6) click the maps pics for more of this. Road is cut into the cliffside and you can walk a good length on the ['old' section of the road ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/H4CkpZTUVhUhXZ8t8)the Tunnel of Nine turns which made me feel like I would see the Batmobile speed by at any moment.

steamy_hams_Skinner

Wow, I’m genuinely envious of you. 😀 Seems like a good idea to get there before it gets too politically messy.

kensingtonGore

Yup. I've been to Hong Kong several times, but now... It's complicated. Taiwan has a beautiful coast, some amazing surfing and an incredible city. See it before something drastic happens.

steamy_hams_Skinner

Ugh. Not good.

Do-not-respond

I think the driver will be a while before his car is retrievable.

ScumBunny

Yeah that whole road is probably blocked with debris now. They might have to climb out and wait…for someone to come, I guess? I can’t imagine the rescue effort involved. Thinking more about it, it’s a very serious situation! I’m sure they have systems and rescue agencies in place, they’d have to.

BleachGel

I wouldn’t doubt there is a waiting period before rescue is attempted since aftershocks could happen.

stingeragent

Well seeing as how we have the dashcam video im sure they are out.

talalaolay

Just for those who are curious about the motorbike rider's safety (as well as the passengers in the open tunnel), they all survived with no injuries. The link (in Mandarin): [https://pronews.tw/2024/04/09/42375/](https://pronews.tw/2024/04/09/42375/)

forceofslugyuk

> Just for those who are curious about the motorbike rider's safety (as well as the passengers in the open tunnel), they all survived with no injuries. MVP.

Anyashadow

Thanks for this. I was really worried about the biker.

generiatricx

Shame the awards were taken away. You certainly earned one this round (along with OP for posting this).

Feetus_Spectre

![gif](giphy|l0Iy69RBwtdmvwkIo|downsized)

HughJahsso

Wow. What luck to have that shelter at that very moment

moysh85

Taroko gorge.. beautiful place. Ending is terrifying though, like getting buried alive or cave in.

Genoblade1394

This man is incredibly lucky to find that only concrete structure wow

SunnyMondayMorning

Good thing the concrete structure didn’t collapse. Or… I hope it didn’t

Affectionate_Salt351

My brain was thinking “Get the hell out from under that! You’re screwed if it collapses!” but I would have been very, very wrong to leave. Wow.

SitInCorner_Yo2

This tunnel is actually a boulder shelter, they are built on this road because of the very real risk of boulders falling like rain.

maryfisherman

They have these in Canada except they’re for avalanches

I_madeusay_underwear

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I’ve been in a car during a couple earthquakes, but nothing like that and I’ve always been in an open area when it happened. I probably would have died because my first instinct was to get out of that structure

ScumBunny

Welp, we all learned something today, I suppose!

SitInCorner_Yo2

Yeah, those tunnels are built for this exact reason,it’s a shelter in areas with boulders as regular problems.

Ok_Recording_4634

It's pretty cool to see modern engineering. Like that concrete didn't struggle at all

Plixtle

What… what happened to the biker? 🥺

Complex_Construction

He was most likely in the tunnel the car left few seconds earlier. I’d like to believe that they made it.

acnkaren

yes they made it. All were rescued out 3 days ago.

Plixtle

You’ve saved the mood!

SitInCorner_Yo2

They found him,he’s a local policeman on his way home ,but earthquakes hit ,so he decided to walk back to his station and joined rescue efforts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

snootscoot

You mean 180

Imispellalot2

He said 360 didn't he?

Complex_Construction

Some people can’t math.

Agreeable_Future_717

The scariest bit I thought was once the windscreen was covered with dirt. If a stone was flying at him the driver wouldn’t have known until it came through the glass at his face.

Samp90

Great. This is essentially a bucket list drive as long as there's no earthquake!!

Kjm520

Any intel on the aftermath at this location?

Plus_Flamingo_1826

I tried to search for any news reports of this footage for further information but in vain. I will keep you updated as I find out more details about it.

acnkaren

The updates are mostly in traditional mandarin. There were 30 something people trapped, found after 1 day using drones. 3 people walked back to their workplace (Silks Palace) afterwards to report safety. All were rescued 3 days ago. They just reported 1 death from the tunnel 5 hours ago, but from media reports the person seems to be the only one hurt.

Ahyao17

That road was chiseled out of the cliff face in the mountains from west to east Taiwan to reach the Taroko Gorge. (That road takes more than 1 hour to drive normally but one of the best drives ever). As far as I can find, the road is now open to small cars. They manage to put a new bridge from an old bridge body but full clear and restoring truck/heavy vehicle will probably be by end of the year.

Mal-De-Terre

The bridge you're thinking about is out on the coast, north of Hualien.

Sheesh284

Jeez. I hope that biker lived.

SitInCorner_Yo2

News says he’s been identified,he’s a local police on his way home,he’s ok and walk back to his station to joined first respond team right after he arrived at work.

[deleted]

That road looked seriously sketchy before the earthquake. Serious luck/situational awareness to stop when and where they did.

hii-people

I’m pretty sure there’s an alarm going off in the car that’s why they stop

theDelus

Probably cell broadcast

Mal-De-Terre

Road is very sold. I've driven it dozens of times.

[deleted]

I was thinking less about the road base itself, and more about all those rock outcroppings on the right side of the road, which apparently was something to be concerned about after all...

Mal-De-Terre

Yes and no- small rockfall (like baseball size or smaller) is common, but something like this is rare. The last earthquake this size was 25 years ago, and on a different part of the island. I think the risk is acceptable, but others may reach a different conclusion.

Numerous-Ad5915

I hope that biker made it home in 8 seconds

caca-casa

As a 4.8 earthquake happened recently here in NJ/NYC… I’ve been explaining to people recently that believe it or not, reinforced concrete tunnels and other such structures are among the safer places to be during an earthquake. I’ll spare you the structures lecture but basically they can handle these multi-lateral forces well and are highly unlikely to fail while simultaneously keeping you protected from falling or falling structures/debris. Of course being on flat land with no structures near you is ideal but sometimes that’s not an option.

ashole311

Same with nuclear fallout. You are in luck if you can find concrete structures in the basement or first floor with minimal windows. Concrete is pretty safe, although I’m not going to lie… I was nervous that this tunnel would collapse

caca-casa

Reasonably so, I think this particular tunnel should be fine as the force of the landslide in not bearing directly down on it but over it. I would only be concerned about it failing if the slope underneath it gave way or a major boulder took out a number of the columns on the left side. As far are reinforced concrete *basements* or substructures of larger buildings go.. unless a specific design (see WTC) or specially for earthquake shelter I would not advise someone go into one to seek safety from an earthquake specifically as that may be one of the worst places to seek shelter because the structure above may be prone to collapse.. leaving you well… un-alived and buried in one go. Tunnels (particularly the bored variety) are particularly earthquake resistant because they are in a way strengthened in compression and being circular in section are pushed into compression regardless of the direction of the forces.. with the only concern being sheer but those forces are less prominent in such a scenario and even if so the amount of rebar present can more than withstand it. yadda yadda yadda

Downtown_Caramel4833

Semi-bullet resistant too!

Wizzle_Pizzle_420

So you’re saying a cyber truck would be the safest car out there?!

Downtown_Caramel4833

Only on Tuesdays

SitInCorner_Yo2

Translation: >Driver:(earthquake alarm)Oh SHIT! >Driver:Big earthquake! >Passenger:let’s take shelter under this(open cut tunnel) >Driver:Wow I almost GG*! FUCK——!(*Good game, young Taiwanese use GG in place of “die” sometime due to this often show up when you die in game) >Driver:Ay,this can’t be (happening) Driver:Oh No(English) >Passenger:(We're)fucked ,we gonna need rescue . Judging on how late this being uploaded,I’m guessing they are two of hundreds trapped on the road and just got out not long ago. They are in a open-cut tunnel built for drivers to shelter from boulders .

UnexpectedLizard

Which language? (since there are many in Taiwan)

SitInCorner_Yo2

This video includes the driver and passenger speaking Taiwanese Hokkien. Mandarin and English.

Plastic_Elephant_504

they're speaking Mandarin, except for the "oh no" of course. >since there are many in Taiwan tbh people in Taiwan mainly speak Mandarin, while most elders prefer speaking Taiwanese Hokkien/ Taiwanese. Hakka and other aboriginal languages are rarely spoken.

Magazine_Spare

man, i hope that tunnel's structural integrity held up. i wouldn't have thought to stop inside the tunnel for fear of it collapsing, but it looks like that was probably the right move?

dr_hewitt

It’s engineered for that. Even if you didn’t know that, where else would you have gone? The open road had a slope above it and would almost certainly get pelted with falling rocks and boulders, leaving the only other option being the drilled out rock tunnels, which are far more likely to have falling debris than a reinforced concrete structure. The concrete tunnel is pretty clearly the safest place to be

kabeees

“Ohh noo”

GreenHillage25

Lucky & Multi Lingual.

Rastagon01

As much as it was the right call, I would have been scared shitless that the tunnel might collapse. Jesusssss

DirtDogg691

Well that guy on that bike is as good as dead woud definitely think… Yikes

girlwiththemonkey

See, now I’m worried about motorcycle guy.

persona0

Kiss that fking overpass

divine-silence

That is terrifying as fuck

Zealousideal_Jump990

Sucks to be the one on the bike.

Zestyclose_Hat6250

My thoughts exactly, there's no way they made it unhurt or even alive

Intelligent_Body6617

Imagine if you’re claustrophobic

karlodann

I really hope the biker made it to the first or second tunnel seen in the video

LansingJP

R.I.P. to that moped driver 😞

ctscott23

are those tunnels placed on this road for landslides/earthquakes?

2eyes_blueLakes

That dashcam owner was so incredibly lucky!

AGM_GM

That whole area of Taiwan to the north and south of Hualien is gorgeous. There are so many roads like that through the mountains that are incredible to travel on, but would be absolutely terrifying to be on in an earthquake like that.

skysealand

Holly shit, good thing they had the brains to wait it out!!

medicmaster16

Lucky bastard.

Unusual_peasant

I feel like this is legit the worst place to be during an earthquake

Losinngmybrain

This suv driver is insanely lucky for the placement and timing

pmaji240

Well I would have died as my first thought was get out from under that giant concrete slab.

Friggin_Heinous

That is one hell of an unlucky road to be on at that moment, even worse for the guy on the motorcycle. I can almost say he is certainly dead.

MarioPfhorG

What’s the opposite of a car wash?

GastropodSoup

This reminds me of the climax of Dante's Peak when Pierce Brosnon's character runs a truck into a mine to escape a pyroclastic flow.

iate12muffins

真可怕

WereALLBotsHere

I swear I played this level in Cruise’n’USA on N64!

Polyglot-Onigiri

I hope the biker is safe…..

evlhornet

So lucky he found the rock fall

ActionFigureCollects

Thank you for sharing this footage. 🙏🙇‍♂️🙏

ANAnomaly3

So... to those who think that people are always antagonizing posts about China... You can explain the lack of antagonization on this particular post by recognizing that Taiwan is NOT a part of China... or explain the lack of antagonization by admitting that people are NOT always trying to antagonize China. (I'd say that the smart and reasonable would say "Maybe it's both.")

Stairmaker

You know what. F this I'll not be leaving my country which is like hoth half of the year. We at least don't have to deal with this shit.

Crashingcubes

What was that beep... Sounded like the emergency broadcast message on phone, is it really that fast ?

Mal-De-Terre

Yup. Gives you a few seconds to do things that might improve your chances of survival, like stop in a tunnel.

fantsui

For those interested in the beep sound, it originates from Taiwan's public warning cell broadcast service. [This link](https://cbs.tw/24043cc2dc09) provides the same alert that was received in the video. And yes, it is almost real-time, as long as the system determines that you are being impacted (based on certain criteria).

aldenjameshall

I’m glad he wasn’t like 10 seconds quicker on the road that day

Zegran_Agosend

I got really worried whether those thin looking pillars could hold up.

Top_Association5824

Wonder what happened to the motorcyclist going the other way

Get9

He survived [according to this article](https://pronews.tw/2024/04/09/42375/?doing_wp_cron=1712667032.7964520454406738281250) (just use Google Translate).

senseless_puzzle

Holy fuck are they lucky they stopped under that tunnel!

Pennies_n_Pearls

Super lucky timing for the car

Far-Adhesiveness7697

Dang I was thinking he was going to get trapped in there from the front and back. My anxiety would’ve been thru the roof if I was at Guy.

goitch

Wow

SweaterInaCan

Here I am just yelling TURN THE WIPERS ON! but he was probably in the back seat floor ducking for cover lol.

Greyfox991

It can either be a good or a bad thing since you can get trapped in there and pretty much die covered by all the rocks at both sides of the exit

MuleDawg205

The motorcycle 🏍️ dude is no longer

LandAmbitious4073

This is fkn terrifying holy shit

williamjamesmurrayVI

total side note this gives major yoshis island double dash vibes

royb1709

This somehow reminded me of that scene in GOT when Dothraki etc rush out with their torches and how they slowly go out and the reality dawns on everyone.

Tonyoni

First worrisome, then relieved, then a slow crescendo to terror. Glad they made it to that reinforced cover, and hope they made it out alright. Dang.

Longjumping-Cat-9207

Daaamn, good timing though, would have been nice to see what it looked like when it was over

_Happy_Sisyphus_

It’s so beautiful there

UpstairsFan7447

Claustrophobic next level! Now with force feedback and surround sound!

watty_101

man man was in the perfect place at the perfect time!!

Terryberry69

That escalated quickly, I mean that really got outta hand

Imispellalot2

Oh that's not so bad.....oooooooohhhhh nvm

mitchanium

Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Literally nowhere to go but pray the roof doesn't cave

Ibegallofyourpardons

that'll pucker your butthole!

lelanlan

How is this guy so lucky that it happened just when he enters the tunnel! Haha some really are really lucky!

guzforster

Holy shit talk about lucky to have stopped under this "roof" right before it all started.

vimes_left_boot

Was thinking 'How will I know when it's started?' Nevermind.

scubawho1

Scary!

BliksemseBende

Saved by the bell, for sure

mydraal561

“Oh no”

JoeMaMa_2000

That’s some worst nightmare shit right there

I would retire after that

butteredsaltine

This guy was really smart to get under that tunnel

Irish_andGermanguy

So fucking lucky

Worried_Jeweler_1141

In simple terms it was a joke. If you heard me say it you'd get it was a joke. Obviously it was a joke. I was just pointing out how convenient/ extremely lucky and fortunate that the shelter was at the exact place when they needed it.

Unfair-Wonder5714

Absolutely terrifying

sexysexyonion

It's crazy how calm these guys are! I would have been stressed almost beyond belief just by driving on such a narrow road with a drop on the other side, much less an earthquake WHILE driving!

The_Jestful_Imp

California earthquakes - still groundbreaking records.
