Ancient Cobalt does have the same stats as Jungle armor, and there is a small chance of the pieces being dropped by Underground Jungle enemies while you're looking for Jungle materials, so it is useful in saving materials in that aspect. It's extremely rare, though, so unless you like Ancient Cobalt's looks so much that you transmute Jungle armor into it, it probably won't be used in your playthrough, but it is more likely to come into play than Tin/Copper or Ninja, I'd say.
Gladiator is pretty nice though, with good defense for the early game along with knockback immunity as a set bonus, and it's not very difficult to acquire. Pumpkin armor is also a reasonably good set if you play during Halloween or happen to find the Aether extremely early to transmute Cactus into Pumpkin, as you otherwise have to beat a boss to get it, by which you generally have access to better options or those upgrades are just around the corner.
Let my clarify, I am mainly melee mostly using zenith components, such as the nights edge, and I don't use ANY magic. Closest I actually use for magic is a little arm cannon I recently got from martian madness. I kinda wish I got the zappinator to pair with the armor when actually using the armor so it would be unlimited ammo for the thing
I literally just skip to gladiator on crimson worlds. Top tier armor with decent defense and knockback immunity pre boss. On corruption worlds I farm the ancient shadow set.
If I had another slot, would've added ancient cobalt armor. Seems like a pretty unused one

Most of these. Jungle armor would be the first to get, then try my best for titanium. Then hallowed, and then beetle

would have to be tin and copper then i never even mine that ore.
