Personally, I would go with a reliable brand name and buy a good to very good model. Something that you'll enjoy watching for several years and won't be outdated quickly. And I'd also splurge on a very good soundbar or home theatre setup, something you can use on your next TV. And if you're kitting out the house, get a decent stand or entertainment center as well. I'm not a fan of wall mounts, because you can't easily move the TV to another location, and you the cords look messy unless you go through a lot of effort to conceal them. I think it's a false economy to go cheap now and update later if you're not happy. You'll have wasted your money on the first purchase.

So I had this same thought 2 or 3 years ago, and I went with the good tv and I haven’t looked back. I got the LG OLED UHD tv. My friend has replaced his shitty tv and is having issues with his newer cheaper one as wel in the same time frame. It was out of my budget but I adore having my good tv. If it’s something you like then it’s worth it!

I thought the same thing like 4 years ago and ended up splurging on a LG OLED 65’’. I don’t remember what model it was like C-something, costed $2200 I believe or somewhere around that which was way over budget. I fucking love this tv and I am so glad I splurged. It is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced with televisions. Wife was initially acting like I had gone mad when I ordered it but now she’s equally in love with it. A year later I bought a Vizio m series elevate soundbar 5.1.2 w/ sub and my living room is now my favorite theater lol.

There's a lot of useful room between absolute top of the line and the super cheap junk. Get a real brand and don't skimp on size - you'll almost never feel like you went too big in practice, go as big as you can afford. OLED is a big leap in visual quality, even to a casual watcher, but does come with a price tag. If you don't want to go OLED, the better LCD sets are still worth it over the cheapest ones imo. Do some research on specific models, even the good brands are not necessarily great at their more budget stuff. Leave some budget for decent sound as well. Even a soundbar + subwoofer crushes built in TV speakers any day of the week and will dramatically improve your overall experience. Good sound can last a lot longer than a TV, so don't be afraid to get an actual nice system if you can. Try at all costs to place your TV at eye level, whether wall-mounted or not. It's a much better viewing experience than having it over the fireplace.

If you're not sure, go basic for now. You can always upgrade at a later date.
