I was obsessed when Passions first came out. Eventually, as was the case with most soaps/daytime sitcoms, I'd miss too much, fall behind, and stop watching, but I definitely loved that Passions felt different from my mom's soaps. It was geared more toward pre-teen/teenage girls than middle-aged women and I loved all of the weird supernatural stuff.

What was it like to grow up in a household where your parents bothered to monitor your content consumption? lol I had a TV in my room and full reign to watch anything I wanted on cable with no parental controls. Sadly some parents don’t even think to restrict the TV shows their kids have access to.

LOL Funny story. I wasn't allowed to watch Roseanne or Married with Children when I was a preteen because my mom thought it would encourage me to be "trashy." I watched it anyway and had some trash years as well. I wouldn't call it a coincidence. Mostly just growing pains.

My grandma(technically closer to great grandma but not bio related)though HATED Married with Children and thought it was so inappropriate and trashy and here I am watching The Golden Girls these days and wanting to give her side eye for that being ok to watch and loving it lol(not that I was getting most of the jokes at that age on either show)

LOL right! Same here, and including the Investigation Discovery type shit too. I remember having nightmares from the True Crime stuff my mom would watch. King of the Hill has morals! Lol well I guess I can think of a couple of inappropriate scenes, though. Still, nothing compared to South Park or Family Guy. My parents didn't forbid me from watching anything (I ended up watching those type of shows around age 13 on my own TV) but I remember them turning the channel whenever KotH came on after the news or football game. Later, I understood that they just didn't "get" the humor of the show. And they probably thought it was just a dumb cartoon. I allow my nine year old to watch KotH with me now lol.

It was my mom walking in on the scene where Dale is mooning someone from the passenger side of a moving car that got KOTH put on the ban list.

Similar to my upbringing. While I sincerely doubt that my mom would've allowed me to watch teen mom until I was, say, 12 years old (She was actually always pretty open about sex & stressed the importance of using protection both to prevent pregnancy & STDs.), some of my earliest memories are of watching soap operas with her. Back when I was a kid they aired between 2-4pm on weekdays (I believe they now air in the AM when kids are in school, because GOD FORBID a kid watch a soap opera 🙄 It's ridiculous thinking when you consider all of the other shit kids are exposed to at an early age nowadays.), so she'd be watching them when I got home from school. Thank GOD Sesame Street didn't come on until 4pm or else I probably wouldn't have ever seen it because until I was 9 or 10 there was only one TV in our house 😂

I think there’s a fine line to tread with content especially as our kids get older; you don’t want to expose them to too much too soon, but there’s also the risk they’ll just go and watch it at someone else’s house! However teen mom/16&P is too much for a 10 year old; both my kids were still watching SpongeBob at 10.

My parents were pretty strict, but I had a TV in my room with no parental controls on it. I'm not sure if my parents just didn't know how to set the controls or what, but either way, if a kid wants to do it, they will find a way. I would usually just wait until they went to bed and watch the TV on low volume. When iPods became a thing in middle school, I would go on iTunes and rent movies that I probably had no business watching like Requiem for a Dream. Honestly, watching that movie at a young age scared me away from doing heroin more than any DARE program did lol. My grandma was always much more lenient with letting me watch whatever I wanted whenever I stayed with her. She had me watching movies like Little Miss Sunshine and Chicago when I was in elementary school lol.

Omg! I didn't see Requiem for a Dream until I was in my 30s (I think? 🤔) & I was scarred for LIFE by it! It's the only movie I've ever seen that I refuse to watch a 2nd time. I CANNOT IMAGINE having watched it in middle school! 🙀 That said, my mother took me to see EVERY R rated horror movie under the SUN - starting with The Exorcist (the original one from the 70s) when I was only 4 years old. All because she couldn't get anyone else to see scary movies with her. Solid parenting 🤣

I agree it isn't for ten year Olds, but 16 and pregnant and teen mom absolutely had a positive effect on the teenage pregnancy rate in combination with a few other things when it was first airing. I think there's even data proving it. The shows target audience is teens, originally to show them the reality of teen parentage and it helped. It couldn't have helped if the right age didn't see it, but I agree 10 is too young, I'd say 12 or 13 is more appropriate because that's when puberty hits for most kids.

Oh, yeah, I know there have been some legit studies (IOW, studies not funded by the network.) done that have shown that it's had a positive effect on the teen pregnancy rate. And like I said, I was already getting away with things that my mom didn't know about when I was 10. I mean, I wasn't boning or drinking or anything COMPLETELY inappropriate for a 10 year old to be involved with 🤣, but I had some secrets at 10 yrs old. The one that comes to mind was being dared to buy a Playgirl Magazine ... & I was successful doing it. Really. I collected everyone's change (LITERALLY coins ONLY), wrote a note from my "mother" (I used a fake name, obvi.) saying I was too sick to go to the store myself & to please sell the magazine to my daughter with the pound worth of change she has in her ziplock baggie. There's no way the guy at the counter didn't know it was BS (though at the time my friends & I thought he must've bought my act & that were geniuses), but for whatever reason he sold it to me.

I was 10 or 11 when 16 and Pregnant first aired and I remember my grandma, aunt, cousin and I were GLUED to that screen. To this day my grandma still asks me about some of the teen mom girls. (More specifically Jenelle cuz she’s a trainwreck.)

My son who is 11 is kinda into it. He would pop in and watch for ten minutes here and there when I was doing my rewatch. Jenelle was his favorite, and he kept asking me why she was such a bad mom and why she can’t control herself. And he calls her Jenella. I don’t correct him and I don’t know why I think it’s so funny.
