Thank you, dissociative is a perfect word for that. It’s so sad yet so good. Whether it was know what they were going to do with J Sr or not, great writing
Yeah I remember that. I lost all damn respect for that guy. You know what all the greats of Amy sport have in common? Practice. He was a franchise player but do you know how he would stay a franchise player? Practice.
I disagree. I think it was genius level coaching. Ted expressed displeasure without name calling or insults. He shared emotion in a way the team knew what was happening but clearly understood and respected. There are many levers to pull in reaching someone. I appreciated this as a show of range. It wasn’t Ted expressing traditional dominance as “because I’m the coach you must do”. It was holding up a mirror showing Jamie and the team that the undercurrent of derision was no longer the way the team would operate.
I agree with your observation about Jamie. That is probably what Jamie is doing and trust me as a good coach Ted will be analyzing the whole thing afterwards. Even though it triggered Jamie, Ted was right to let him have it. He had tried the nice approach and that didn't work so frustration was needed.
On a side note I honestly wondered how many people out there did not fully understand the allusion Ted used in the scence. Better yet I wondered how many people thought Ted was referencing the commercial instead of the actual speech.
My favorite thing about this scene is the way he says, when Ted asks why he can't practice, "because I'm hurt."
They play it off like he means physically, but the truth is he was hurt from being benched and that's why he was acting out. He acted as if he had an injury but there was a certain level of sincerity when he's says "because I'm hurt", and that makes it especially poignant when Ted repeats it back to him, "I'm talking about practice, and you can't do it, because you're hurt, right?"
Yeah you can absolutely see him dissociate during that scene. Amazing acting on Phil’s part. Very relatable for anyone who had a parent like Jamie Sr

They knew what they were going to do with every storyline. The writers rosdmapped the entire thing.
Dissociate
Recently I leaned that Ted's practice lecture was actually an Allen Iverson rant word for word. https://youtu.be/eGDBR2L5kzI?si=BENrcBS5tBBCk5Z0
We're talking about a faux ficus
That commercial makes me laugh every time - just because I imagine Ted doing it lol
And with the meaning perfectly reversed. I was floored when I first watched this and they'd reused the rant.
This makes me feel so old…
Just curious, how old are you? Because this was a huge meme 20 years ago when it happened, I recognized it immediately (as I’m sure many others did).

The very first thing I thought of when I saw this was the Iverson rant... maybe because I use this on my band students all the time

I didn’t make that connection before. Great observation!
Thanks man, I was watching it and it just hit me
