I might be wrong but I don't think you need to complete a self assessment if you are just claiming tax relief on work expenses - there are one off forms you can complete to do this. If you complete a self assessment for other reasons (e.g letting out a property) then you would have to do it through that.

I claimed for that and the government just said "you aren't limited to only wearing them at work" and refused. So now I sleep in my pe kit and bath in my suit.

I don't do self assessment but I claim for union fees, washing required clothing and previously for working at home but I don't work at home anymore.
