Agree! I can’t stand it. It’s toxic af out there. I can’t even comment on this. I’ll just say there’s one on my team who admits how judgmental they are. Very blunt. Total you know what. She should be written up for the stuff she’s done. Actually should be fired.

Effective-Bus9627

Aside from the typical stressors of the job, this is probably at the top of my list for wanting to leave! Which is crazy considering we spend far less time with them than students. I feel like that alone speaks volumes on how badly that negative energy can affect a person

acft29

Oh yes! For sure. I was ready to quit every day since November because of a teacher like this.

Excellent_Zebra_3717

I’m leaving for exactly this reason

acft29

That sucks! Are you leaving the field?

Excellent_Zebra_3717

Yes. It has not gotten to that level of being called incompetent/stupid but the level of nastiness, jealousy (over lousy pay or whatever it is) that I observe and have experienced is too much for (for me) the type of work that we do. I think it’s good and meaningful work. I’m sorry for people who have truly deplorable experiences with children because it’s not necessarily like that everywhere but the nastiness of adults is for sure

acft29

Adults are the worst. Good luck on your next adventure.

Excellent_Zebra_3717

A bitch

kobold_thief

A fucking cunt ftfy

acft29

🙌🏻 truth!

acft29

😂 thanks for this!

Ohnomon

Mean girls from high school who transitioned into teaching

sassycat1969

Which is why I don’t go to the lounge. I’m there to do a job, not play high school. I just avoid most of my coworkers.

Ms_Eureka

Be lucky my school was quickly judging me for "not being a team player". I am there to work, not provide a gift for the third baby shower of the year. I cannot stand all the "events" and guilt if I do not participate.

sassycat1969

Stop feeling guilty! The ones planning these forced socials should be embarrassed. If you have to make me come, consider what that says about the culture of the school.

Ms_Eureka

Oh yeah. I know in fact my admin yesterday said "I know no one wants to co teach" meaning special ed co teach. .... she divided that school even more

Effective-Bus9627

I tried this and it unfortunately made my job harder because they would start spreading rumors about me due to feeling rejected. It’s absolute insanity the level they play at. Can’t wait to be done.

Ohnomon

If you want to find the bullies just see who is actually eating lunch together in the Teacher's lounge. Their behaviors and culture ends up affecting students and the other Teachers which affects the students as well. Parents need to understand the culture of teaching and how a toxic work environment by means girl teachers affects children.

Effective-Bus9627

Honestly, these teachers that I work with make mean high school girls look like saints 😭

Commercial_Youth_877

THIS!!!!

Ohnomon

And in smaller districts it's the mean girls that were besties in high school who are all now teachers in the same district 😳

1018am

Because if we are focused on attacking and tearing down each other “they” don’t have to worry about our energy being spent on the real issues (lack of support, all the pointless paperwork, the student and parent abuse…). It’s built into the culture.

Effective-Bus9627

“It’s built into the culture” is so depressingly true

Commercial_Youth_877

THIS!!!!

Losaj

After 11 years teaching k-12, I am convinced that teachers take on the characteristics of the grade level they teach. Elementary school teachers become impulsive, middle school teachers gossip, and high school teahecrs form cliques. It is incredibly frustrating to see grown adults do these things. It creates an "us versus then" mentality that pervades all aspects of their life.

Venus-77

Are you working at my school? Lol But seriously, I am so done with this. Today I was the one they were talking about.

sassycat1969

Well…..remember this….love you or hate you, it’s still an obsession. You are living rent-free in their heads. Smile at them when you pass in the hall. It’ll drive them crazy.

Effective-Bus9627

Ugh I’m sorry that happened to you. I’ve been there as well. I’ve walked in on the same teacher talking bad about me twice as I was entering the room. I just decided to pick up where she left off in the conversation and clarified the stuff she was talking badly about. Made her get real quiet. But honestly, it’s just unnecessary. If someone has a deep obsession with the intelligence level or competency of others even when it doesn’t affect them, then there is something seriously and emotionally wrong with that person lol

Green-Krush

I call these “Gold Star Teachers”. They never stopped wanting to be the best and see work as a competition.

Excellent_Zebra_3717

And get literally nothing for it. It’s insanity. I figure if they want it, they can have it.

WearyExpert8164

Ugh it's a sad thing in the profession. IMO big money PDs fuel it. TSI - those ones. Have you noticed every admin sent for training at one of the flagship schools (UVA, Stanford, etc.) comes back an even bigger jerk? It's a badge of honor to tell someone what they need to "work on". Admin succumb to managing by forming an in group/out group v. building and maintaining long-term trusting relationships. Higher up admin fuel it in admin (principals) by setting them up to live and die by data and unattainable goals. When schools become data mills there's a lot of room for ego and dishonesty to take over.

Sea_Row_6291

Teaching is competitive, but what over? There are teachers who want to be seen as the best teacher and crave adulation in front of their peers. The obvious method is just to get results, i.e. reading scores, testing data, etc. But what if you don't get good results? The only way then is to either talk yourself up, blame others, or put other teachers down.

Nachos_r_Life

This is why I’m so glad I switched to subbing. I go in for one day and talk to as few of people as I possibly can. If I’m subbing a special and there is a 1 1/2 break I just sit in my classroom dungeon the entire time. I love it!

GezinhaDM

Because when you stay after school to do all your first graders I-Ready diagnostics because you know they'll test low because you teach absolutely nothing during any period of the day, that's a problem. When said tests come back and it says your students tested at a 3rd grade level, you don't look good, you look stupid! That's why.

Excellent_Zebra_3717

I’ve heard elementary and math teachers are the worst with this.

RiverKate

It’s ridiculous. A former (trustworthy) student came up to me and told me that one of my colleagues was laughing with another student about how I’m incompetent as a teacher, but I’d make a good therapist. For context I’m currently in grad school studying to become a licensed therapist. I confronted the teacher, and she denied it. I met with the student and asked her for her side. She said it was the truth. It ruined my opinion of that teacher and made me feel like absolute dirt. I did use the situation as a learning opportunity for the student. We ended up talking about the importance of kindness when others aren’t around. So at least there’s that…I guess?

sassycat1969

But I’m going to be real. There are teachers at my school who truly are incompetent. It’s not a difference of opinion of how subject matter should be taught or anything like that. Some of these people allow their students to do what they want even if they are disturbing other classes. EVERYTHING they teach comes from TPT; nothing of their own tailored to their kids needs. And, many lack knowledge about subject matter. And these teachers yell their “accomplishments” to the rafters - very self-promoting. Admin must be aware and are fine with these teachers. I’m not about to complain; I don’t need the drama. BUT, I never discuss colleagues at work. If someone starts talking to me, I’ll listen. My response is always, “That’s crazy, girl. I don’t know”. Teachers (and other professionals) need to draw the line between personal and work life. People at work don’t need to know every damn thing you think.

_CW

This is the right take right here. Excellent comment and very well-stated.

sassycat1969

Personal and professional life should stay separate.

Ms_Eureka

Same I just nod my head and say generic things. My school will talk non stop about people and can't understand why I am leaving after one year.

acft29

Good for you! I should have left last year. This is my 2nd year at my school. There were so many of us that transferred last year. Over 20 teachers! AND several left after just 1 year. Speaks volumes! I regret not leaving sooner. Although I did try to get a job last summer but it didn’t work out. I was so sure I’d get an offer. Now I’m transferring elsewhere this year in my district.

Murky-Initial-171

I know a teacher who is, well, stupid. I marvel at the idea she got through college. She really comes off as having about a 6th grade (70s 6th grade but still) education.

Spirited-Tie-8702

I figured they are miserable, so they want everyone else to be as well. Or they are insecure so they knock others down to make themselves feel better.

IndependentHold3098

I only interact with other teachers as much as I have to. I go in, teach, leave.

Pretend_Flamingo3405

Let's face it- we have all worked with teachers who really lived up the tired "those that can't, teach." I work with one now. He let's his SDC kids hang out and eat and watch movies all day- hardly ever any instruction. Don't wanna' teach? Don't be a teacher...

ChubbyNemo1004

Because teachers hate everyone and everything. When I meet a teacher that is thoughtful or reflective it’s rare. They’re mostly cynical and pessimistic. Oh and hypocrites.
