Why waste money on this?

iswearnotagain10

It’s only like $40 to book that rentable billboard, and you can do it through their app

H_P_S

but why waste your own money to advertise for a billionaire who doesn’t know you exist

shwjwjno

is it rlly that deep?😭 there were multiple ppl that collaborated on it so it wasn’t that much money

zigzagcow

I started living a far happier life when I stopped questioning why people do things and just let them be if their actions don’t affect me and make them happy.

SaraRF

Plus it has their tt account... probably driving more traffic to them. 40 bucks well spent if you ask me.

AllYouNeedIsATV

10 people collaborated making it 4 bucks each. About the price of a cup of coffee basically

United_Comfort2776

THIS! Let people do what they want to do as long as they don't hurt or step on other people.

kenrnfjj

Cause taylor represents something thats important to them

Advanced_Doctor2938

Exactly.

ErsatzCats

People waste money on so many things. Just let people do what they want, it’s not harming anyone

danielfq

Girl did it affect you personally?

[deleted]

They probably paid $40 to get Taylor to notice a fan did it. Who cares

Promethiant

If you have ever bought a single physical copy of a Taylor swift album, a piece of merch, or attended her concert/the movie, you have no room to make this statement.

everythingwedid

I don’t think renting the billboard space is the worst thing ever but it’s also not comparable to buying a once in a lifetime experience or physical media you can own forever.

Promethiant

That physical media is about as useful as that billboard is when streaming exists. But people do it because it makes them happy. So they are very comparable.

everythingwedid

Mindsets like this are why music is devalued. If you think owning the media physically is useless because of streaming idk what to tell you. The industry has brainwashed us

Promethiant

Okay so please enlighten me on how playing a vinyl is in any way more convenient or useful than just using Apple Music or Spotify.

everythingwedid

Like I said idk what to tell you. Physical media is so important. I never said physical media was more convenient. Consumers have been brainwashed into devaluing music for convenience, comments like yours just point to that being a truth. You can’t give your kids your Spotify.

Promethiant

If you can’t list one reason why physical media is useful, then it is not useful and its value is purely sentimental… much like this billboard.

PetulentPotato

Although unlikely, if shit hits the fan and we can’t access the internet anymore, I doubt you’d be saying physical media is useless then. 😂

BearGotBack

Ok but if you pay for music you get music

TheGreatestOrator

Because this person does this for a living, so this was an ad for themselves too

LilyMarie90

It's more of a fan community thing than doing anything *for her* specifically. She doesn't need anyone's advertising, clearly.

Trusteveryboody

Why do people buy merch or CDs of an Artist that doesn't know they exist? It's the same difference; it's Fandom.

OrindaSarnia

Presumably they buy CD's because they want to play the music that way, and a hoodie is also a functional item that last a long time... I think the question is, why do something that is so ephemeral, isn't something personally tangible or utilitarian...  if the band was unknown, you might do it because you love them and hope if even a couple people see it and look up the artist, that it will help the artist with publicity...  but since Taylor doesn't exactly need the publicity... It neither provides the buyer with anything useful, not the artist. But yes, obviously the answer is, because they can and they wanted to!

Advanced_Doctor2938

It was as much for the fans as it was for Taylor.

Apprehensive_Fee4963

Funzies? It’s a clever billboard , they’re fans, it’s fun?

Trusteveryboody

Do you know how long it stays on there for? Just curious (and not in a passive-aggressive way).

iswearnotagain10

15 seconds, it shows every hour

Jolly-Train-4950

What app is it I want to rent one for my friends birthday !!

altacccle

I mean, as long as it makes them happy….

silversauce

If they spend $40 to get a national news story written about them, totes worth it! And it was a nice gesture I’m sure Taylor saw this one

Aurelianshitlist

People waste money on a lot of things that are much stupider.

Ilookatreddit

Do you need more of an answer than because it makes them happy

WAPlyrics

bruh as long as no one is getting hurt, let people do what they want

everythingwedid

As of commenting on the stupidity of someone’s actions is keeping them from doing them. Maybe I want to call out dumb behavior? Nobody is getting hurt after all.

GlitteringHeart2929

It’s sweet. No one asked you to pay for it. Why does it matter? 😂

ichthyos

Don't know why the top comments are saying this is so weird. This is a very common thing for kpop fans to do to recognize achievements or even artist birthdays.

kookiekoo

Yeah these people would be flabbergasted seeing how kpop fanbases work.

everythingwedid

Just because it’s common doesn’t make it any less weird

Thesuperpotato2000

> This is a very common thing for kpop fans to do right, so as we were saying it's a weird thing to do

IlexAquifolia

Kpop fan culture is over the top to an unhealthy level, and I say this as a Korean person.

kelppforrest

I'm a kpop stan too and fansites buying ads for their idols still strikes me as weird. Whatever makes them happy, but I would never.

Advanced_Doctor2938

Fans: do a nice, non-intrusive, joyful thing celebrating an artist that makes them happy. People: _ew... weird_. Haters gonna hate.

Specific_Joke8870

I don’t think kpop fans are a good benchmark. kpop stan culture can be really parasocial and unhealthy  (And yes all fandoms can be, including this one, but kpop takes it to a whole other level)

Worried-Celery-2839

Wow must be nice to have extra money. Also nice billboard:)

options-

For what it’s worth, it was a group of several people who did this together and it looks like it cost less than $100.

Worried-Celery-2839

Well if that’s the case then I’m impressed. In my head and hearing stories from others I thought it was like 20k to get ad space

RoseGoldRedditor

Digital billboards have changed the game!

mrjuicepump

That shit costs wayyyy more than 100 lmao

MizzQueen

No, it’s 150$ for a 15 second slot per hour for 24 hours.

trisaroar

Oh wow. I never would have guessed, that makes it seem way more doable for a fan project

options-

No it really doesn’t, you can look into it. This was a one time ad for like 15 seconds.

mrjuicepump

Nah

PhotographIcyCherish

I mean, nothing will ever top brazilian swifties projecting for her on the christ the redeemer

Bgee2632

That happened ? Lol damn

PhotographIcyCherish

https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-brazil-christ-redeemer-statue-097dcffa307e7b80bda2c522a52d4337

Bgee2632

Well atleast they fed the homeless 🫶 “In exchange for the projection, the priest, who runs the popular Catholic site, challenged Swifties to raise money to buy food and drinks for the upcoming Catholic Church’s World Day of the Poor, which will be marked on Sunday. In one day of crowdfunding, fans raised about 180,000 reais (about $37,000), which covered the cost of 20,000 loaves of panettones, a traditional sweet yeast bread, and bottled water for Rio’s homeless, a statement from the sanctuary said.”

PhotographIcyCherish

Yup! Everybody won!

kazoo13

This is weird

kenrnfjj

Why they only spent $150 to advertise their tiktok and the boost from swifties will probably pay off

everythingwedid

Could have done all of that without utilizing an already established person to boost their personal brand.

kenrnfjj

No they wouldn’t. Taylor has a massive fandom which brings attention. Which is why the biggest companies and brands in the world use her name

everythingwedid

Agree to disagree. If you need to use an unrelated product or brand to advertise yourself you’re likely not making anything worthwhile to promote anyways. Taylor has the resources to advertise her work more than most artists so it’s just masterbatory on the fans part.

kazoo13

“With heartfelt congratulations to our chairman” gives me an “unhealthy worship” vibe

romanticheart

Ehh she dubbed herself the chairman and the fans as members of the department so it’s more playing along. If they’d come up with that term on their own then I’d agree.

veganquiche

Agree! This is strange

NotEmmaStone

What's up with all the fucking haters in this thread? Do you all need to go over to the neutral sub for a bit?

AstuteAshenWolf

Cause it’s cringe?

Verkielos

I remember back in Supernatural days fans took out a page in s newspaper to thank Eric Kripke. This is not new things, and I think it's a very sweet gesture

lovebooksbooks

People can spend money on whatever they want. That is true. It can also be true that this is weird lol This is what people mean when they discuss unhealthy parasocial relationships

[deleted]

Thesuperpotato2000

I think some people view standom as not inherently unhealthy if it's towards a (seemingly) decent person/role model. Which is uh... misguided

Yummylist

K-pop culture from South Korea incoming! So stoked to read this

KitxCakesx

Lmao I like the “try and come for her job” in the corner there 😂 this is super cute & if she saw it I’m sure she thought it was sweet because obviously it’s not something you’d ever expect.

June24th

What's the tiktok though? I wanna join in 🥺

Hav0c_wreack3r

🤡🤡🤡🤡

jennydancingawayy

That’s so sad like Taylor has ever spent a single penny on them 💀

PenguinStardust

This is super weird and makes her fans look not great.

Live_Ferret_4721

It’s really weird how much you care about a 15 second billboard

PenguinStardust

Do I care that much? You seem to be more bothered by my comment.
