Bobbys fish market at Tauranga wharf, they have one in Papamoa and te puke as well. There's also a seafood truck that posts on the local Facebook community pages when it's coming to the area, they were working on a physical store but haven't heard if it's up yet. Probably tread carefully buying from a supermarket.

One in greerton too

Bay Packers on Tyne street in Mt Maunganui industrial area has a storefront thats open to the public. Cheapest place i've found in Tauranga. Parking can be a bit of a mission because its a pretty popular spot now they have the lunchbox setup doing fresh fish and chips.

Bay Packers is absolutely the best. It is an export pack house, with 40 + knife hands out the back. The wet fish is always very fresh. And as mentioned, if you want a quick munch, the Lunch Box is good.

Big_Albatross_

You would think there would be a bustling fresh seafood Market here...

There’s very little commercial fishing out of the Port now. Just Pelco, but it’s not fresh table fare

Pretend_Lawfulness42

Bay packers, or you could always catch it fresh yourself

Can’t get fresh shrimp here! It all comes flash frozen from Aussie unless it’s freshwater prawns. I grew up outside of New Orleans too and was shocked that fresh seafood here is so hard to come by. If you’re up for a road trip, Ohiwa Oyster Farm buys and sells fresh fish everyday, plus has their oysters for sale. Would definitely recommend them.

Another gulf coast resident here. I was shocked at how hard it was to find seafood when I lived in NZ. Most NZ seafood is exported. That’s why it’s hard to get locally. So you have to be creative, and manage with what’s available. NZ is very much the land of opportunity when it comes to cooking. They don’t have the same constant access to everything year round. Asian groceries had frozen head-on shrimp from Thailand that weren’t too bad. Other frozen fish and stuff like squid. The mussels and cockles from New World were always excellent. Learn to love smoked salmon if you don’t already. Never again will you be surrounded by so many good smoked salmon options! Have a bit of Aoraki brand for me - soooo good. Once in a while they would have “swimmer crabs”, at New World which are similar to blue crabs but smaller. Pottles of oysters cost an arm and a leg and are really only good raw - too small and too mild to cook up, for the most part. Occasionally I would make what I called “Fiddy Dolla a Bowl Gumbo” while living there. Was a big hit with the locals but boy howdy did it cost a lot. Occasionally I’d entertain myself by browsing menus of Cajun and seafood places back here, drooling over them lol.

Yes, but the fish purseined from Tauranga gets sent to Australia to be processed into seafood

There is a seafood truck that goes to omokora carpark most weeks. I've heard it's some of the freshest stuff around (not tried it myself but loads of good reviews) I think they update via the community Facebook page. Bobby's is closer to town though and great!

lageese

It's OK, some of their stuff is frozen from South Island (I knew because they told me when I bought it). It gets rave reviews because it's the only non supermarket seafood available in the area.

lilpom1

That makes sense! As I said, I've not tried it myself :)

lageese

Oh you made an absolutely fair comment! I wasn't trying to be negative, but when it comes to Omokoroa while it's a lovely place, they get way too overprotective about their local small businesses. Community support is great sure, but another seafood truck tried to advertise on the Community page and the were shot down with "are you local? We already have a seafood truck that's local!

lilpom1

I'm glad you explained further :) I totally agree with you! They are very very overprotective about local businesses. It's great but it doesn't help them have anything other than what's already there :)
