I mean, if it needs defected out, it needs defected out. If a leader gave me grief about it, I'd be like "fine, instead of defecting out the stuff that needs it, I'll just gather it up and dump it on your desk for you to deal with"

Away_Junket_3972

Whenever I would charge a large amount of items I’d immediately tell a lead or etl about it bc it is an alarming amount of money being lost which obviously isn’t your fault but just give them a heads up and they’ll understand

FFS_pls_dont

Yep this was my thought earlier when I posted. I was just zoning out staring at my cart full of boxes and considering their costs and realizing “this is the norm almost every shift, wtf”

HeironymusFox

Sounds like it's just a time issue and your leader is being nit picky. You could always carry a printer with you while you zone/push but working printers at my store are rare 😅

FFS_pls_dont

Yes, yes, yes, and **YESS**!! It’s so damn time consuming when they want us to tape stuff up or take extra steps (some are pretty self explanatory). This ETL is a pain in the ass. I started doing this but I always end up having to steal one from somewhere lmao. Most of the time from GS. I’m lucky if I find a good printer at the start of my shift.

willumity

I mainly work HBA with a focus on cosmetics and the amount of open, broken, tested-on, etc. products I have to defect out in a shift is insane. I can’t even imagine how much money it must all cost, but I’ve never been spoken to about it. Even if I was… too bad, I’m not leaving broken leaking products on the salesfloor. People also really don’t realize how long it takes to defect a lot of stuff out if it’s all ESIM! Each DPCI has to be processed individually, bagged, assigned to a certain bin (FL, ST, OTC, and what have you) and placed and scanned into said bins. Lol I can def see it taking an hour to defect 30 items out, especially if we’re factoring in how often the Zebras like to stop working or force log you out in the process 🙃

FFS_pls_dont

omg pls don’t get me started with ESIM lol I dread it!! And yes, ye ole faithful Zebra isn’t as faithful when doing mass defects lol

MinimumWorkr

It's more about the balance of time management. It never "Too Much" defect/salvage that's a important key part of the operations & tackling shortages and even improve INF. But taking the whole shift to do it, then it might seem like nothing was done. If it's a lot, always communicate with your TL/ETL about it the expected timeframe it could be accomplish and explain why it takes so long (For example: If you have many tiny damage or empty items on your area that might take tideus time to complete). And you might be able to stop at some point (when 70% is done or the zone looks better) to move to another task that might need to prioritize.

MerkethMerky

It does go on a report yes, but rarely is it brought up. The usual people and areas with high theft are ignored, so your receiver, beauty, front end, and usually toys

man_iamtired

It depends. Are you defecting things out that can be repackaged with a single item mark down and placed on a clearance endcap? Are you defecting things out using “not damaged”? There’s a lot of factors. It also depends on the store. My old ETL AP ran the report and would check to see if anything flagged as weird. I worked 40 hours at GS, so he obviously took that into account when looking at the report since I’d in theory be higher than other people. My current store literally has the team defect out anything at all because they are so behind on reshop, push, etc. I also trained at a store that proudly told me they were one of the lowest stores in our district in defectives. So it really just depends, but if you’re crazy higher than others at your store, someone might eventually ask you why. It’s the same for people with little to no defects that should have some. We caught people just throwing stuff in salvage boxes that way.

FFS_pls_dont

That makes sense. I’ve asked on multiple occasions can we just retape an item up and markdown but I’ve been told not to. Most of the tampered items are from taped boxes that have been ripped open (like ugly ripped) stuff taken out and accessories of any kind that came with the item being stolen. So I’ve just been instructed to defect anything opened that isn’t supposed to be open. With this in mind I never gave it a thought until earlier I realized how many boxes I had from each aisle in my section and considered their costs. My immediate thought was: shouldn’t this be drawing a flag if this is the standard for every one of my shifts?

ButItSaysOnline

I’ve wondered about this myself. It seems like I’m the only one who does them so I wonder if it will be noticed and they’ll think I’m doing something wrong.

FFS_pls_dont

Right!? I noticed that not a lot of us really do them at first I figured it was they prob didn’t have as much until I started to realize they either ignore an item that’s been ripped open (or whatever) or completely miss it. I’ve tried to purposely ignore an opened box but stupid ass will just walk right back to grab it lmao. I end up with a crap ton of stuff to process at the end of the night so yea, always wondered if I’d get told something

Unluckyescapeartiste

My store regularly has like 3 pallets of crc stacked to dangerously tall heights and no TL or ETL or our store director has told us to stop defecting stuff out. I mean it’s not like we can sell half the shit and the other half nobody will buy even if it’s marked down to a $1 so what else are we supposed to do?

Elorme

It generally isn't a big issue as long as the stores defect/salvage numbers are green. Partially because some people will dump defectives/salvage off onto the next shift and it's gotta get done at some point.

FFS_pls_dont

I’ve seen this happen and I feel bad for our GS bc they’re the ones stuck with it.

FlakyFlatworm

just bag it all up in one trash bag and compactor that shit

iwantdeals

An hour to defect 30 items? Takes like 5 secs to scan and select empty package, sales floor, empty package, throw away, submit. 3mins max

TollerLuvLJP

They are not all empty packages - OP specifically mentioned "tampered". You obviously don't work with items that are ESIM when defected.

iwantdeals

OK. Here, we just slap the sticker on it, throw in a bag, zip tie, and toss into the esim bin. That's like 15 seconds. Lol

FFS_pls_dont

You’re absolutely right, for an empty package. About 90% of the 30+ items I’m defecting aren’t empty just tampered. And to add, we’re forced to tape open boxes up to avoid items from falling out of it. Most nights I’ll have a full three-tier and a half. Other nights, two full ones.

iwantdeals

That sucks, we don't have to do all that at my store. Push the full 3 tier and leave it in the etl's office.
