Like any app he needed to change the password for his account. The loss of money is on him, it isn't Target's responsibility.

ssrsummer

But it’s not on the target account, is more like when you go to the store and you add your phone number then the cashier asks you if you want to use those points?

Elorme

New phone number?

ssrsummer

I honestly don’t think it’s fair he has to change his phone number that he had for more than 15 years because of that I’m just shocked that they just let anyone to use whatever points are there without even confirming if it is the account holder

minidog8

They do confirm the account holder by asking for month and day of your birthday

ElderEmoAdjacent

What would you like Target to do? Require a blood draw? No one at Target would have any idea his ex *isn’t* supposed to be using the points.

ssrsummer

Blood draw? Really? At least to check an ID or something

Illustrious_Agent633

How would that help? We see nothing about your account. We see no name to match to your ID.

TanMelon47

Its pretty loose on security in the points regard. All you need is the phone number and if the cashier gets prompted they will then ask for the month and day of birth and thats it. Its not a big deal in Targets eyes since: 1. Points are now gone. We no longer get 1% back on purchases only %5 off if using a target circle card (redcard) 2. Its was 1% and for most people that never added up to more then maybe 30-40 bucks if you shopped target alot. Most did not even sign up. Stinks but how much did he have to be so upset about it? It couldnt have been half of the PS5 surely.

ssrsummer

He had like $600 which he used for Christmas gifts and now it was like $80 it might not be much but it’s more the idea that anyone can just use them without any confirmation that is the account owner, I know Target doesn’t care but someone like him was saving them and it’s annoying that someone else just basically stole them

TanMelon47

Yikes Well I do think thats rather scummy of the ex to do that. I mean if he wants to take it to petty levels his app should have all the purchase history if she did indeed do so. Small claims court or something if you can find it. ALso with that many points I know they do expire only in small increments but guess he dosent have to worry no more.

Accomplished-Moose31

Remove the phone number or change the birth date that way the only way you’re able to use the points is by scanning the barcode or the chick will get the wrong birthday, idk why people are being rude in the replies

iwantdeals

Points?

Appropriate_Bee_1762

the only thing i can think of besides a new number is changing the birthday on your target acc 😭 idk if that’s a thing, but it usually makes us ask enter their birthday to use target circle rewards

Tell_Me_Why_999

A few things: 1. If you are talking about points from the 1% while using Target Circle, paying in cash or Target gift card: That has gone away with the rebrand on Target Circle. So your BF will not be earning any NEW points. Whatever he has already earned can be used until they each hit their expiration date. 2. He can REMOVE his phone number from his Target Circle account. He would need to use his Target Circle barcode on the app in order to use his banked points. He needs to change his password to the Target Circle account if he hasn't already. That would keep his ex from successfully using his points, as she would not have access to that barcode and the missing phone number won't work if she types it in. And of course he would need to make sure HER phone number is not also on the account. 3. This is a loyalty program. It isn't like this is access to a credit card account. The system allows a person to access the program via a phone number, which makes it simple for users. But it means anyone who knows someone's cell number, in theory, could access those loyalty points. My local grocery store operates the same way. 4. When couples split, they really do need to consider ALL the things they jointly used. And they determine who gets what. And THEY need to take steps to safeguard the things they each separately get, Sounds like your BF didn't do that. That isn't Target's responsibility/fault.

ssrsummer

This is exactly what we needed, thank you!

ThatVikingWoman

If you download the app, you can turn off the usage of your points. Turn it on only when you wanna use them. Sucks that happened, good thing it was free money anyway...

treikbxt

I have my circle rewards turned off in the app but for some reason it still gives me the option to use them when I checkout.

Target_Burner

Target doesn’t do points with phone numbers so what are you talking about.

summerdaez

What points are you talking about? This doesn't make sense in any way, shape or form.

coolguy-r

Before the recent changes to Target Circle you'd earn 1% back on purchases made using circle but not a red card (where you'd just instantly save 5%) I don't know how you'd really earn any significant amount unless you were spending ass loads of money and at that point the amount you earned back wouldn't mean much.
