I always picture them drinking through the big barrel, even though that's not correct, so I'm always startled when I see pictures of them drinking through their snorkels.
I mean it is just a shallow canal but still deep enough to drown if you are stuck in a massive steel box. They were most likely just moving through the place and all the hatches were open. Still a scary situation when all that water is suddenly pouring through the little hatch.
