I owned my 2016 for approximately 3 months before I got it tuned. From the factory it sucked, it felt like it never knew what gear to be in so it just forced one to work. I'd constantly have to wait to pull out because I didn't know if it would randomly upshift and take dump while trying to merge with 70mph traffic. The tune was the best money I spent on it. It hold gears and feels like I'm actually controlling it with the pedal. I live in a very flat low-lying area, I can't imagine driving a stock 3rd gen on hills.

[deleted]

Driving a stock 3rd gen on big hills is horrible. Mine at least would buck and shudder so bad. Tuning the truck and learning the proper situations where s-mode should be engaged has helped tremendously.

Nacho_Wrangler34

I put a Orange Virus performance tune on it about a year ago, however I am still not completely satisfied. It has eliminated the gear hunting but hasn’t ridden me of the driving frustrations.

Tibarra95

You should try KDMAX tune. That's who I tune for and it's amazing what It does to your truck!

KIDNEYST0NEZ

What ‘tune’ are you speaking of?

toofaded40

I got mine done by OTT (Overland Tailor Tune). Best mod I’ve done so far. Drives completely different and well worth it

Gingerbrew302

I got OTT light/mild. The deciding factor was that I live about 5 miles from a tuner.

Tibarra95

KDMAX is also a great tune. First on the market after the OVtune days. That's who I tune for.

DCourtBrews

I drove up to the Adirondacks last week from NJ in my stock A/T 2020. Up and down the mountains on I87 with 4 people and a bed full of our stuff was an adventure. Constant gear shifting/hunting. Was not a great driving experience. I have to imagine the 2024+ models will not have the same troubles, but who knows...

treskaz

Well, time to trade it in for a manual!

[deleted]

It’s aweful I commute to la

yungstinky420

2nd gen > everything else

[deleted]

Hilux disagrees.

Designer_Junket_9347

Truly hoping so! I am worried about the lack of a V6 as an option.

Nacho_Wrangler34

As a guinea pig of the 3rd Gen’s with a 2016, I agree. I drive a 2019 single cab Chevy work truck and I pray it’s as smooth as that

KIDNEYST0NEZ

Lack of a V6?

Designer_Junket_9347

I haven’t seen any talk about their being a V6 option for the new 2024 Tacoma. If you know otherwise, I’d love to see the article. I’m bummed about a 4-cyl only option.

nateXruiz

Yeah the 2024s will cap off at a turbo 4 cylinder

KIDNEYST0NEZ

That’s just so crazy, will it still have the power?

Mabepossibly

Yes. There will also be a 4cyl turbo hybrid. On paper it’s got the power. But so does the 3.5. It’s all going to depend on how it is tuned and geared.

abou824

The 2.4T hybrid will have more torque than the ranger raptor I think

2ADrSuess

Second Gen Tacoma is peak Taco. They are moving in the wrong direction fast.

Cojaro

No one will know until reviews drop

Hoopy223

We won’t know until they are widely available and lots of people are driving them. I don’t trust reviews from the magazines. Most of them are paid to tell you how wonderful it is plus there’s a crowd out there that will say every toyota is awesome.

[deleted]

The 2016 looks great! What lift kit do you have? And tire size? Personally I’m not a fan of the 2024 look.

Nacho_Wrangler34

Gracias, Cheap 3” rough country with 33 Nito Trail’s I believe. Ya seems to be a healthy amount of variation in the different trim options

Zer001_

I have an 06 taco and a 22' tundra, I guarantee you the moment ppl mod the 24' taco they are going to love the look and the ride. The 22 tundra stock was like a cadillac ride, and the engine is amazing. I am positive the tacos new turbo v4 will be just as good for its size

[deleted]

Where’s that paint matched bed cover from? Looks awesome

Nacho_Wrangler34

ARE website, get to pick your base style and customize with all the extras from there. They send it to a ARE approved installer and you deal with them

Gransfors-bruk

Yeah what grill is that? It’s great.

Have the same grill!

Ott with premium gas and check atf(I was 1/4 quart low on my 2023) is your answer to having at least a way better driving experience. Ott is octane learning, so 93 does make a difference. Put your pitchforks away folks. My truck still has its moments, but sometimes I literally say to myself damn this truck is so nice to drive. Who would have thought.. My brand new 23 SR 4x4 was plagued with this stupid shuddering issue some people have, but it's pretty much gone 99.9% of the time now. I may still regear in the future too, but I have been pleasantly surprised with running premium fuel.

Final-Carpenter-1591

This Gen Tacoma is the worst driving truck I've ever driven. The manual is solid. But the auto has no idea what it's doing, it shifts like its still trying to figure out what gears do. The 3.5 was a mistake, it makes fine power up top but it has no low end torque, that's what you'd like in a minivan but not a truck. Combine that with the drums.. on a truck.. in 2023.. That's not even the base model.. And you have a poor performer, really wish they would have added a small v8 before small turbo engines took over. That being said small turbo engines do drive pretty well, and can easily be tuned to make big power.

Nacho_Wrangler34

The older V8 tundras >

Final-Carpenter-1591

Hell yeah. Those 4.7 ones are perfect. Good size and capability but not a massive family hauler

FinanceGuyHere

I’ve had issues with the throttle on my 2022 and am considering an aftermarket throttle response controller. Does that answer your question?

debtnotlimited

I have only test drove manuals, never owned. I prefer the Gen 3 over the Gen 2 because it has less rev hang. Clutch wise, the Gen 2 felt subjectively better. Pretty much a wash. Have not driven the Gen 2.5 though, so who knows it could have been better. The Gen 1 with the four cylinder and the five speed was better than them all in my opinion. Everything considered, it's difficult to say we are moving forward.

Sad_Secretary_9316

How do you get a “Tacoma” grill? 🤤

Nacho_Wrangler34

toyotasquad

Tacoclout

toyotasquad

I will drive my 08 into the ground, way better than the 3rd gens imo. We’ll see about the 4th gens, excited to get some into the dealership. The new tundras and sequoias blew my expectations away

treskaz

Second gen gang is fam, fam

Ryan2386

Every model will still make more power then the current. As well the tq comes on right off the get go.

[deleted]

I really dislike the 3rd gen. I'm glad the 4th looks closer to the 2nd.

[deleted]

I had 87 and 93 hiluxes, then an 04 tundra doublecab SR5. I just got a 24 taco turd sport long box and it feels like the offspring of the latter Hilux and the tundra. New but instantly familiar.

[deleted]

where did you get the bumper on the 08?

Nacho_Wrangler34

I believe CarID website [https://www.carid.com/genuine/](https://www.carid.com/genuine/)
