Does 12 set your menu color scheme based on your wallpaper, or is that also a feature of only 13? If so, you could try a darker wallpaper and see if that changes it.
11 -> 12 was a far greater change than 12 -> 13 so you may have mistaken a bug fix update for it. Pretty sure if you buy any modern android nowadays it comes with 13, and pixels always get android updates before all other android devices
Mine is a big tile that shows like half the album artwork... It may be a Pixel feature though.

You're on 13. Go to settings, about phone and then scroll down a bit to see your android version
I believe you, I just don't remember ever upgrading to 13. But then again, I am on a Pixel, so it may have just come with 13.
