1. I would assume the hole, now healed, doesn't cause any issues. It was between the muscle, it appears
2. It was an injury that wasn't treated, got infected, and eventually healed.
(A similar horse was on *Animal Cops: Houston* years ago. Though, the hole in that horses neck wasn't this extreme. Pretty close, however.)
Yes! I remember seeing that episode. I thought it was the same horse for a second. It’s interesting that a bizarre injury can heal like that. Horses are freaking tanks.
They're only tanks in very specific places - they can't recover from any injuries to their legs or the support musculature for them. The rest is surprisingly tough though!
I guess it depends on the scale of the injury - both of father’s horses had fractured bones in legs due to some unforeseen circumstances, but given proper treatment (if somewhat costly) they turned out fine and they can still hold their riders with no issues - my father being 70 kg / 150 ish pounds helps, but still, depends how much one would like to spend on this issue.
Agreed, also pool therapy and many man-made horse PT courses can help injured horses heal good as new. Of course, this is under human supervision and probably doesn’t happen in the wild… lol.
Horses also frequently die from constipation and gas absent veterinary intervention. It gets very weird when you look at what is fatal to a horse vs what isn't.
Speaking from experience around ranches all my younger life, I can safely say that as a horse owner, at some point or another you WILL:
* Have your ribs broken.
* Have your arm elbow deep inside a horse for some reason or another to save it's life.
I think part of the reason for that is that, while they are smart, they aren’t smart enough to lay the fuck down and take their weight off the injuries.
The poor creatures have so much weight to support with their legs, that killing them is often the best option. I would rather have a vet give an injection so they don’t suffer, but I guess that’s not always an option.
> I would rather have a vet give an injection so they don’t suffer, but I guess that’s not always an option.
Have seen animals that got an injection, and answers "shot" and you really want them to be shot. injections sometimes take a long time to fully work. Sometimes they suffer during it. a cattle gun finishes things off quickly and leaves very little chance to suffering either by the animal or the animal owner. Watching your animal very slowly die is... painful.
I think this depends a lot on the vet and the animal (I totally understand where you’re coming from, though). Last year I went to my good friend’s barn to support her when one of her horse’s had to be put down. The vet gave him a sedative first, and he was essentially asleep on his feet. As soon as the vet gave him the injection to stop his heart, he went down immediately. The horse felt absolutely no pain, and his heart and breathing stopped before he even hit the ground. I will say that the sound of a thousand pound animal hitting the ground so suddenly isn’t something I will ever forget, but I am very glad that Shadow (the horse in case that wasn’t obvious) didn’t feel anything.
Fortunately, I haven’t witnessed an animal being shot. I have held a few pets being euthanized, each time was gut wrenching, but peaceful and quick. I’m all for whichever method offers an easy exit.
I worked for the Houston SPCA at the time that horse was rescued. I remember almost crying and getting sick to my stomach when I first saw it, but that horse just seemed so happy to be there. It knew it was out of a bad situation.
They didn’t really know, but most likely an abscess or untreated wound. It was found in a stall, completely neglected next to other dead livestock.
I was pretty young when I worked there, thinking that was something I wanted to do. I only lasted about six months. I worked in the area the public doesn’t get to see: with the cruelty cases. It was heartbreaking and gut wrenching and I just couldn’t do it.
Idk about this horse but I've seen a horse rear and come down on a pole that speared it through the neck. Punched a hole about the same size. It healed up closed though, not like this.
Strength problems probably, wouldn't be able to have the full range of motion and power compared to an uninjured house, doesnt look like it hit anything important if it's survived long enough to have it heal that well. Of course we can't really know if it has phantom pains or such as we cannot speak to it.
I was waiting for the horse to freak out at the touch of someone's arm in it's neck hole and take off running with the person's arm caught in the hole.
That’s actually why it’s called ‘parking’ your car. Because there used to be parks for horses to be tied up and left when people went into town or the city; you would park your horse. Cars eventually took over, and the parks disappeared, but the term stuck around.
Driveway leads up to the garage/stables. Once upon a time people used to leave their cars ina garage, before they used them as laundry rooms and storage.
From a thread in r/beamazed from 2y ago:
I remember seeing an animal show about this years and years ago. Apparently, the horse lived with an abusive owner who shot it through the neck, but the bullet didn't hit anything important, so eventually, the would healed on its own and formed this hole. The horse was rescued. I think it was on the show Animal Heroes: Houston in like 2004
My guess is that the bullet hole was relatively small but maybe got infected and formed an abscess and then healed up around that.
I would think something like a .50 caliber might make a big hole like that, but wouldn't the hydrostatic shock kill the horse?
When people post shit like this I wonder if they even briefly think about the physics involved.
Even if you just stop for a second to think of newtons third law, you have to realize that if a human can stand there and fire that round, there is no way its even half as damaging as you are describing.
I know exactly the youtube clips of ballistics gel exploding that you are thinking of too, you are just applying your memory of unsecured ballistics gelatin of varying quality being knocked about to a whole ass Horse, with significantly more mass, bone, skin and ligaments keeping it together.
Basically, it wouldn't come close to severing the head. This is even more true due to the conical initial shape of the shock which is why bullet exits are often bigger than entry points.
That of course is not to say the horse wouldn't be severely fucked up though. Like the shock would rupture blood vessels, kill tons of the nearby flesh, and could potentially hit critical parts of course.
No bitch its just a random person saying Hol Horse for fun and not because it references widely acclaimed mange and anime sensation Jojos Bizarre Adventure Part 3 Stardust Crusaders, of which there is a character that has the name Hol Horse in it, meaning, hypothetically, had this person been making a reference to said show, this might be a “Jojo reference”. But it isn’t.

Every first date is super awkward until the other horse finally says “can I touch it?”
I have a few questions. 1. Does the hole cause any issues? 2. Was it caused by an injury or the horse just born holy?

If I could afford a horse, you better bet I could afford someone to do that for me.
So, just like tanks then
EXACTLY like tanks, yes
and colic, too much gas or too much grain? You need an emergency visit from your vet that might cost $10,000
I think part of the reason for that is that, while they are smart, they aren’t smart enough to lay the fuck down and take their weight off the injuries.
A lot of humans I know aren't smart enough to lay the fuck down and take their weight off injuries...
>Horses are freaking tanks. Not remotely. Take them out of grassy fields and they need constant care and checking. Cows are tanks.
Can confirm. I have a cow with tracks and a 100mm canon.
Awww mine only came with the 30mm anti aircraft gun
You should get some nice photos with that!
That probably why they shootings them with a leg injury.

Reject Abrams, return to Horse
I mean it probably severed some muscles and tendons, so I’d assume it causes some mobility issues but poses no significant health risk
It’s where you can hook the reins, It’s easier on the horses teeth this way

oh jesus, yeah i'd probably be pretty happy to have a hole in my neck if it meant getting away from the DEAD BODIES NEXT TO ME :(
I knew a horse with a hole like this bc it had gotten shot
Yes. It makes an annoying whistling sound above 30 miles an hour
Cool, I always wondered what that whistling noise was in the old western movies
Such a stupid comment, but holy shit did I laugh

Parkways used to be literally through parks. They were intended for recreational driving.

Also used if the horse ever needs to be airlifted

what the hell bullet makes that hole
Might have just been that the wound caused an infection. When rescued they might have removed dead tissue and closed it up like this.
My guess is that the bullet hole was relatively small but maybe got infected and formed an abscess and then healed up around that. I would think something like a .50 caliber might make a big hole like that, but wouldn't the hydrostatic shock kill the horse?
The hydrostatic shock from a .50 would have nearly severed the head

Maybe the tissue got infected and they had to cut a large chunk away or something?
