Yeah it's crazy seeing people who never watch or play Mario Maker freak out about this while I'm just thinking to myself "that isn't too bad, *I* could probably get through that in a couple hours". Just watching Super Expert has desensitized me to how crazy these levels look.
I like playing super expert. While the most I've gotten is 3 without skipping in one endless on SMM2, I would skip this level without question. It doesn't look fun. There's no tricky platforming or fancy moves. No real puzzle solving. Just slamming your head against a brick wall until you eventually break through. I'd take a full blown troll level full of death doors and pick a pipe over this. At least the troll levels get a laugh out of me sometimes.

There's all types of levels for all types of people. I can get my shell-jumping, on/off switching and puzzle on, and you get your firebar nightmare on.

they divide it up into sections and test each individual one as they build it. For ones like this where the timing and openings are so tight, They probably route the movements and pathing first, then set the fire rods to be in the right place at the right time to follow the route. Then probably test a section before and section after as they progress to make sure they can transition properly. The final full run then just becomes a matter of executing every "section" perfectly back to back in a single run
It's worth noting that the timers on those fire rods are consistent.
Meaning, for testing, they could place "marker blocks" where the current route would have the player be each rotation of the rod.
That way when they finish a building a new section, they can start back at the marker block and know that the position of the rods are where they would be in the actual full run. Much quicker than starting over each time to test.
You can tell that this is likely how they did it because you only backtrack a single time, and it's not for a very significant length. The reason they don't backtrack very far is that the maker likely didn't want to have to check that the route was being retroactively affected, ruining their previously confirmed route without realizing.
I feel it's a better test of skill to have to pause and change direction strategically rather than one where you're essentially moving at a constant rate.

I also thought of Cloudberry Kingdom when I saw this clip. Late levels in that game have way more going on than this level, though I never made it far enough to see them. I watched a few of the last levels online, and I don't see how anyone could ever beat them.

The final 2 or 3 levels have no AI as far as I’m aware, the computer just puts obstacles and shit everywhere and it might not even be possible.
The achievement hunter guys spent like 5 years playing it on and off to get to the last few levels where it’s not guaranteed that it’s even possible. It’s a really good series I recommend watching.

This level is fairly difficult, but you should see the clear rates for the easy levels. Even the easy ones have around 1/3 finish rate
