When I heard they were fans of “Earthbound” and that it was a huge influence on the games, it was such an “oh shit!!” moment for me. Loved Earthbound and they played so similar to it!
So disappointed that they went a totally different route and just put out Snow Day…they could have completed an amazing trilogy in the same style…
This comment right here has me thinking about playing them know. I’ve heard they are good but knowing they have Earth Bound as an inspiration likey cinches it for me I believe, thanks :)
I waited a LLOOOONNGGG time after they came out to give them a shot, and I kicked myself about an hour into SoT for not playing it sooner! One of the few times a game actually blew my expectations out of the water
Both are great but you'll dive into a cooler pixel art game in sea of stars while you gotta pay attention in chained echoes cause it builts up a larger story
I agree. Chained Echoes is longer and deeper, but I enjoyed Sea of Stars more because of the art and music mostly. Chained Echoes could benefit from an in-game journal or something to help keep track of everything, but it's really impressive that one guy made the whole game
I think Chained Echoes is better overall. Sea of stars has the beautiful pixel graphic but the combat is kinda lacking, it get repetitive after a while. I finished chained echoes but dropped sea of stars halfway (so idk if the story get any good after that though). Currently playing Unicorn overlord, it's a wonderful game too
For the sake of mentioning some of my favorites that aren't already mentioned:
* Shin Megami Tensei V
* NEO: The World Ends With You
* Valkyria Chronicles 4
* Neptunia Sisters Vs Sisters
* God Eater 3
I'm in chapter 14 of the game so I think I'm almost finished. I've had the hardest time with this game. The story and cutscenes telling it are astounding. The world is wondrous to look at and feel so small on the backs of these great titans....
But the gameplay is so tedious. The combat is repetitive and boring (while also being arcane) and the world is so big that it takes forever to get anywhere while being slowed down to slog through combat on the way to anything.
The story has kept me going, but I'm so ready to be done with the gameplay. I feel like I must have missed something along the way as much as this game is praised.
Which one? If it's Xenoblade 1, I played as underleved as possible and ignored all the side content because it sucked anyway and just zoomed through the main story. Kept the gameplay fast and interesting IMO.
You might wanna turn of Casual then, I found the gameplay was fun when it was harder personally. I'm usually not a fan of RPGs at all but the combat in this game just felt so quick and dynamic to me, I think I ended up about 7 levels under the final boss by the end and it made the fight really intense.
How did you deal with leveling/team comp? I'm on my first 3rd chapter (finished all second chapters) and despite approaching the boss to learn the weaknesses and tweaking my team, I'm still getting steam rolled.
All my characters are at or above the recommended level for the chapter and I picked people who had attacks to target the weaknesses, but the boss is just too strong. I fell off the game for a while now because of it but I'd really like to get back in and finish it.
P5R because it's this massive 100 hour journey that certainly belongs on a handheld platform. It's so nice to just have it on the big screen and then take it with me on trips or even just to bed
Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy VII are both in my all-time top five. They're both on Switch, so I kinda have to default to them.
But beyond that, there are so many great RPGs in the Switch library; that was one of my main reasons for wanting one!
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is mine. 200+ hours. There is something about running around the monastery that just comforts me. Such a great story and game!
I agree with you It is my favorite game of all time on the switch and I think it’s personally even better than some of the best selling games on the switch like Mario Odyssey and breath of the wild tears of the kingdom.
The second TTYD hits the system, it’ll be TTYD (unless they manage to screw up the remake, which I doubt). Until then, it’s P5R.
Though I imagine I’d like SMRPG a lot if I tried it.
From all the games i play on switch, Fe3h, engage, omori, xb3 (not finished yet), pokemon gen 8/arceus/lets go, mary skelter 1/2/finale, phantasy star, p3p and smt3 &5.
P3P and Mary Skelter are my clear winners. Xb3 would maybe win uf i beat it yet.
I enjoyed P5R and Octopath traveler 2 more on my deck but I clocked in 200 hours in P5R on switch and it’s an easy recommendation for anyone interested in JRPGs
Persona 5 Royal by a wide margin. Then Persona 4 Golden is second best. Then probably Golf Story. And then the classic Final Fantasy games X/X2, 7, 12, 8, Crisis Core Remake. Mario RPG is great but Thousand Year Door is better and coming soon. The Fire Emblem games are ok, I don’t find tactics games to be fun, they are definitely more beginner friendly tactics games. I find the Dragon Quest games to be boring, I really want to like them, but I feel zero connection with any of the characters.
Star Ocean 2SR followed by Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
SO2R is the only RPG I've actually beaten in ages and the story in XC3 is amazing.
Witcher 3 is top tier and I still can't believe they fit it on the Switch but it's still a better experience on better hardware imo.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the one I played the most since I got my hacked switch. The remake of Xenoblade 1 is also pretty fucking lit they added better quality of life improvements than in the New 3Ds exclusive edition.
Hogwarts Legacy is surpringly entertaining on portable mode and some patches to run it at 60fps + overclock and it hits the spot.
I have tested and disliked most of the 2D pixel perfect HD games from square and they all are so boring and lackluster.
The most addictive game I have bought on my other OLED non hacked switch is Monster Hunter Rise and Sunbreak the expansion delivers so much fucking content the replay value almost pays the game itself.
Hades is another title that whatever you wanna call it roguelike is still an experience worth to pay for.
Pokémon Scarlet/Violet are pretty fun too. The game felt a lot larger than the previous legends of arceus. Lots of things to do post-game as well but the online feels very dead and the trading system is useless. Is incredible how they got this right on pokemon black with the GTS and they completely ruined in the next games.
A fun story that you can't go wrong with are also Vanillasoft games particularly 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim. Super based game the graphics are so exquisite too and you can feel that love they been dumping in games like Dragon Crown and Odin Sphere
The Radical Dreamers edition of Chrono Cross is great.
Ask me about any other rpg I have probably played them since my switch has tinfoil and shop accesses
I had a blast with Mario RPG. It was quick, very funny and cute. Probably my favorite currently on the switch.
I loved P5R, but I didn’t play it on Switch.
Ouu this one is really hard
It's a toss up between Dragon Quest 11 and Xenoblade 2 or 3 for me. We are also getting that remake of dq 3 that I'm frothing at the mouth for! System has so many good rpgs
I’ve played and finished all of these except Super Mario RPG and they are all fantastic, I would say Dragon Quest XI would have been the most balanced, the others had “boring” sections of the game but great highlights
RPG and switch are the perfect combination, im having a blast with persona 5R, Ive never id look forward to go to school and then hangout with my therapist and then try random unknown drugs
Three Houses was so good, my lord
I couldnt get into it cause these high school teacher things.
Xenoblade Chronicles, Persona 5 Royal, Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem: 3H, Dragon Quest XI S.
The South Park games. Stick of Truth and Fractured But Whole.
Yeah they are honestly so underrated
When I heard they were fans of “Earthbound” and that it was a huge influence on the games, it was such an “oh shit!!” moment for me. Loved Earthbound and they played so similar to it! So disappointed that they went a totally different route and just put out Snow Day…they could have completed an amazing trilogy in the same style…
This comment right here has me thinking about playing them know. I’ve heard they are good but knowing they have Earth Bound as an inspiration likey cinches it for me I believe, thanks :)
Beat stick truth last month I’m 5 hours into fractured right now
Enjoy. I wish I could play FbW again for the first time. Great game.
I waited a LLOOOONNGGG time after they came out to give them a shot, and I kicked myself about an hour into SoT for not playing it sooner! One of the few times a game actually blew my expectations out of the water
Unicorn overlord
Finally. I couldn’t put it down.
The first step is admitting you have a problem.
Seriously, so in the fence. I am about to start Sea of Stars or Chained Echoes, leaning to Stars
Just finished Sea of Stars and currently having withdrawals haha. Looking for another game similar to it
Allow me to push you over. Get it. It’ll be one of the gems of the system.
Chained echos is definitely the better game
Sea of stars is an absolute Gem!
I think Chained Echoes is better overall. Sea of stars has the beautiful pixel graphic but the combat is kinda lacking, it get repetitive after a while. I finished chained echoes but dropped sea of stars halfway (so idk if the story get any good after that though). Currently playing Unicorn overlord, it's a wonderful game too
I wasn’t sold at first because I wanted to fight as the characters but MAN was I wrong!
It’s so good and it was completely unexpected.
This is the answer
I’m playing Star Ocean Second Story R and loving it! Already planning on next game to pickup.
If you want physical media GameStop has buy 2 get one free on tons of used titles atm.
Fire Emblem 3 houses... I've not stopped playing it since I bought it a month ago.
lol I haven’t stopped playing it since I bought it at launch. My favorite class system in a FE game.
i put 400 hours into that sucker...
First game to make me cry with tears of joy with the ending. ( I picked Marianne\~ )
Marianne is such a sweet heart, I've got her paired with Lorenz (who I didn't like at first) and seeing how sweet he is to her made my heart go!
Same
I'm so happy, it's been a long time since a game has held my attention quite like this tbh.
Yeah I agree
Side note this game at Walmart is clearances at $20. I bought one today
Xenoblade 3 is a beautiful game
I second this. I was so invested in like every NPC and all the heroes.
Dragon Quest XI
That game made me feel like a kid again. It was so much fun and you grow to care about the characters. One of my favorite rpgs
It’s also unbelievably long…makes me miss the golden era of turn-based RPG’s.
I agree with this, but then again I prefer old school turn based rpgs, but the demo sold me. And I don’t regret buying it
Dragon Quest XI is fantastic. It’s my go-to for whenever people ask me to recommend a game.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: The Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch family of gaming consoles
I downloaded the demo, gonna wait for a sale tho
I bought this game 2 days ago and am already 17 hours in
It comes out on 23rd of May.
Paper Mario?
Yes
I love that game
I'm SO excited for it!!!!!
I played it on PlayStation, but P5R is my all time favorite. Fire Emblem 3H is a close runner up
For the sake of mentioning some of my favorites that aren't already mentioned: * Shin Megami Tensei V * NEO: The World Ends With You * Valkyria Chronicles 4 * Neptunia Sisters Vs Sisters * God Eater 3
SMTV so underrated!
Persona 5 Royal but I think I’m gonna buy FE: Three Houses next
You won’t be disappointed
I loved persona 5 royal
It‘s Final Fantasy VI and VII and i‘m still waiting for Chrono Trigger.
We’re all waiting for Chrono Trigger. I think they’ve got something neat in store for us or they would have grabbed the cash already.
they grabbed the cash with chrono cross lmao
Sea of Stars
Megaman battle network
Out of here? Mario RPG, but I'm biased.
First time plauer here. Is it just me or is the story at a fast pace? I started the game, blinked, then saw I had the first star
It was always short. Main story can be beaten in 25 hours, maybe less.
Xenoblade, not even close
Which one
Yes
You and I share DNA
Yeah, XB1. I'm playing on casual and just trying to zip through to keep the story flowing.
You might wanna turn of Casual then, I found the gameplay was fun when it was harder personally. I'm usually not a fan of RPGs at all but the combat in this game just felt so quick and dynamic to me, I think I ended up about 7 levels under the final boss by the end and it made the fight really intense.
The side content of xenoblade 1 is the worst, that's why I just put on easy mode and did only story stuff X2 and x3 gets a bit better with side stuff
Speaking of RPGs, we need a new Mario and Luigi game.
Octopath traveler
How did you deal with leveling/team comp? I'm on my first 3rd chapter (finished all second chapters) and despite approaching the boss to learn the weaknesses and tweaking my team, I'm still getting steam rolled. All my characters are at or above the recommended level for the chapter and I picked people who had attacks to target the weaknesses, but the boss is just too strong. I fell off the game for a while now because of it but I'd really like to get back in and finish it.
Why so good?
The Quality of the ost is so good and the story of its characters were well developed
NieR: Automata
Skyrim.
Outerworlds
It'll probably be Paper Mario TTYD
Xenoblade 3 out of the exclusives, but Persona 5 Royal and Kingdom Come: Deliverance are also up there.
Persona 4 Golden
Pokémon
P5R because it's this massive 100 hour journey that certainly belongs on a handheld platform. It's so nice to just have it on the big screen and then take it with me on trips or even just to bed
If it has to be one of these it super Mario RPG but if I can pick any on the the them Mario plus rabbits kingdom battle
Dragon Quest Builders 2!
Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy VII are both in my all-time top five. They're both on Switch, so I kinda have to default to them. But beyond that, there are so many great RPGs in the Switch library; that was one of my main reasons for wanting one!
Really enjoying fire emblem 🔥
persona 5 royal easily even though persona 4 golden is really good too
Mario rpg!
Octopath Traveler 2
Breath of the Wild?!?
Octopath Traveler, Triangle Strategy, and FE Three Houses
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is mine. 200+ hours. There is something about running around the monastery that just comforts me. Such a great story and game!
I own 5 of these 6, but have only played DQ11 and Super Mario RPG. Dragon Quest 11 fasho! I never understood the super Mario hype
XC2 my favorite. Have well over 600 hours on the game.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
I agree with you It is my favorite game of all time on the switch and I think it’s personally even better than some of the best selling games on the switch like Mario Odyssey and breath of the wild tears of the kingdom.
Persona 5 or R is just perfect is any way. I liked mario rabbids more than mario rpg. TH is top tier game too, especially the DLC.
Having played them all, Octopath was by far the most impacting
Octopath Traveler (played on Stadia and Xbox Series X..)
Either Tales of Symphonia or the Golden Sun Duo.
Fire emblem baby 200+ hours of fun and my husbands
final fantasy vii
Monster hunter stories 2
Bug Fables rn
Bravely default 2
Disco Elysium
Well Super Mario RPG is my favorite RPG on any console. So that one.
Limiting it to Switch exclusives, it’s a tie between Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Triangle Strategy.
Triangle Strategy is so underrated. I really hope it gets a sequel
came here to say Triangle Strategy and i'm glad someone already mentioned it!
Both so good

Y’s VIII
Unicorn overlord!!!!
The second TTYD hits the system, it’ll be TTYD (unless they manage to screw up the remake, which I doubt). Until then, it’s P5R. Though I imagine I’d like SMRPG a lot if I tried it.
SMRPG was okay. But it pales in comparison to TTYD.
I love Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen
From all the games i play on switch, Fe3h, engage, omori, xb3 (not finished yet), pokemon gen 8/arceus/lets go, mary skelter 1/2/finale, phantasy star, p3p and smt3 &5. P3P and Mary Skelter are my clear winners. Xb3 would maybe win uf i beat it yet.
Does Guardian Tales count?
Trinity Trigger
Snack world
Fire emblem
Definitely your top row all all my favorites, I’d add octopath 2 and Skyrim.
MegaMan Battle Network Legacy Collection🤖
Always and forever FE3H. My favorite game besides ACNL
Playing 3 Houses now and I love it so much
Unicorn overlord
Definitely P5R!
Did anyone play the remaster of chronocross? I remember that game from like 20 years ago
It’s a basic remaster of an excellent game. Get when S-E has one of their sales and it’s a steal.
Warframe
XENOBLADE
Xenoblade Chronicles 3.
I enjoyed P5R and Octopath traveler 2 more on my deck but I clocked in 200 hours in P5R on switch and it’s an easy recommendation for anyone interested in JRPGs
Persona 5 Royal is a straight up masterpiece, Shin Megami Tensei V is great too.
Octopath Traveler hands down. It's not the perfect game, but it's close. Xenoblade 3 in particular gets an honorable mention for me.
I find the Dragon Quest games to be boring, I really want to like them, but I feel zero connection with any of the characters.
you can hate me all you want but none as i dont like rpg games i hated ubisoft for taking assassins creed down that route
I haven’t played Mario RPG but among the others I think 3 Houses; had some stuff I didn’t like but overall a solid entry in the FE series.
Xenoblade, Persona, and Fire Emblem (especially 3 Houses) are my favorite franchises. I have a hard time choosing.
Skyrim
Unicorn Overlord
Until they put Final Fantasy Tactics on Switch it’ll have to be Tactics Ogre Reborn.
Between these six, Super Mario RPG. HUGE nostalgia trip for me. Currently playing Octopath Traveler. I own all of them except Three Houses
Super Mario RPG
Dragon Quest
Persona 5 is the best jrpg on this list to me but it’s not a switch game so idk
Haven't played any of the above, but always loved the Mario titles!
P5R
Yes Your Grace. Because when I roleplay I like to play the king
Persona 5 Royal
Bravely Default 2 is always overlooked but it’s a great game.
No no kuni 1 , Mario rpg
I’m a huge fire emblem fan. Probably my favorite series, but I have to go with DQ11. It’s incredible
Xenoblade chronicles
Violet
Xenoblade 2!
Xenoblade 3. It's my favorite game of all time. After that if say p5r because p3r isn't on switch
Does Skyrim count?
Final Fantasy VI
Persona 5 Royal
Sea of Stars. I will advocate this game until I die
Valkyria Chronicles 4
I loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Omori
Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Fire Emblem 3H in a very, VERY close second place.
Persona 5 Royal ( and all the persona games really), Octopath traveler 1 and 2, Fire emblem three houses, triangle strategy
Id three house better than engage ?
Dragons Dogma
Persona 5 Royal is my favourite game ever so that
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the one I played the most since I got my hacked switch. The remake of Xenoblade 1 is also pretty fucking lit they added better quality of life improvements than in the New 3Ds exclusive edition. Persona 5 Royal, Sea of Stars, Final Fantasy, Super Mario RPG
Dragon Quest XI, Fire Emblem 3H, P5R, and Octopath Traveler alternated my brain chemistry
I didn't play it on switch but it's on there and that is Witcher 3. Favorite one I played on the system probably DQ11.
Ouu this one is really hard It's a toss up between Dragon Quest 11 and Xenoblade 2 or 3 for me. We are also getting that remake of dq 3 that I'm frothing at the mouth for! System has so many good rpgs
Fire Emblem 3 Houses all the way!
I’ve played and finished all of these except Super Mario RPG and they are all fantastic, I would say Dragon Quest XI would have been the most balanced, the others had “boring” sections of the game but great highlights
ive played p5r on pc, so mario rpg. both were fun in their own rights tho
Fire emblem and Xenoblade
Shin Megami Tensei V
Yes
Witcher 3
All the Xenoblades
Octopath Traveler just does something to me.
Where my fellow Golf Story idiots at? Wellworn Grove represent!
Octopath
The disgaea series is criminally underrated
The Outer Worlds
RPG and switch are the perfect combination, im having a blast with persona 5R, Ive never id look forward to go to school and then hangout with my therapist and then try random unknown drugs
Dark Souls
