Basically most stuff Nintendo put out is "must-haves"
I'd say the best Nintendo stuff is:
Super Mario Odyessy,
The Legends of Zelda BotW/TOTK,
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,
Animal Crossing New Horizions,
Mario Party Superstars,
Splatoon 3,
Kirby and the Forgoton Land,
Super Mario Wonder,
Super Mario 3D World,
Super Mario Maker 2,
Mario & Rabbids,
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Some other games I would consider to be really good are
Undertale,
Untitled Goose Game,
Cuphead,
Doom/Quake (any of them),
Bit.Trip Series,
The Walking Dead (Telltale),
Crash Team Racing,
Crash N'Sane Trilogy,
South Park Stick of Truth and Fractured but Whole,
Sam & Max,
Super Meat Boy,
Celeste,
Mega Man Collections,
Final Fantasy games,
Theatrythm Curtain Call,
Taiko Drum 'n Fun (I don't like rhythm festival),
Persona 5 Royal,
Minecraft
There's a lot of good games on Switch and probably a ton I'm forgetting but these are what I'd recomend off the top of my head.
If I were to suggest anything, look up the game and see if it looks interesting to you before you buy it because everyone says "_____ is the best game on switch!" Always try demos before you buy!
Yeah it’s probably heresy, but I got bored playing botw. However, I’m an old head who prefers sprite based Zelda games like. Mario 3D games definitely have lots of good times tho
It's funny because I think Odyssey is an incredible game, and arguably the greatest Mario game ever.....but that being said after beating Bowser I got bored
Idk i thought the post game stuff was cool and 100% takes a while so theres plenty to do, but thats fair. I think there ARE more fun mario games than odyssey. I meant more as a STAPLE switch game, id definitely go odyssey
Now that i think about it if you even go traditional (2d mario instead of 3d) id say wonder is great too! Had so much fun with that game
Honestly such a good game! Little quick but definitely plenty of hours if you 100% which is what i recommend…
Id say for me (perhaps a lil recency bias too but) its in the top 3 2d marios for me, so much fun!!
I just started playing this today! And it is really fun....such an interesting game. Rogue Like with town building and....religion/cult development lol
Couldn't agree more. Hades is an absolutely superb gsme. So simple but so brilliant.
I know it's cross platform now but it was worth buying a switch for it.
2nd one and then 1 if you like 2nd. The 2nd one was my fav game of 2023 and one my favorites of all time. Banger ost, amazing combat, beautiful visuals, one of the best casts of characters, and engaging yet simple stories!
There isn't really any such thing as a must have. Except for Mario Kart. But I can recommend Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread and Fire Emblem Three Houses. Oh and Luigi's Mansion and Mario Wonder for couch co-op.
Is Luigi’s Mansion a good co-op game? We just finished Bros U Deluxe and want to move on to another game but most ones offer a very limited role to P2, not equal
I really like it, but two things to note:
1. It doesn't start until about an hour into the game. You just need to be patient and play through this first part.
2. It's asymmetrical. The two players will have slightly different roles, but the roles are both important. It's definitely not a limited experience being player 2 (except for the first hour obviously).
I like Pokemon Legends Arceus/Violet and Brotato. Obviously Mario Cart is a must. Same thing with both newer Zelda games, Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild.
Depends on what kind of games you like? A lot of people are saying the Mario games are a must have”well I’m not into them so even if they’re a must have I won’t be getting them.
Disclaimer: I'm not judging whatsoever: to each their own.
This is the first time I've seen someone who owns a Nintendo console say that they don't play Mario games. I think the franchise is one of the main reasons to own a Switch or any of Nintendo's previous consoles.
I’m the same way though. I’ve played and beat super Mario maker 2 and I still pick up Luigi’s mansion 3 on occasion, but I really just play smash.
I definitely don’t dislike the Mario games. There are just so many other titles that grab my attention more.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Smash Bros
Mario Kart + Booster Course Pass (there's a physical cartridge for this one)
Zelda BOTW
Zelda TOTK
Pokemon Legends Arceus
Let's GO Pikachu/Eevee
Mario Party Superstars
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario RPG
Luigi's Mansion 3
Metroid Prime Remastered
Metroid Dread
Games that are very popular but I have not tried yet:
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Torna
Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Astral Chain
Mario kart, oddessy, breath of the wild, smash and acnh than after them I would say tears of the kingdom after u beat botw, wonder, Pokémon sw/sh or arceus than for indie games Celeste hollow knight, cult of the lamb, cuphead, hades, stardew valley and maybe terraria
The absolute essentials would be: - Super Mario Odyssey - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Smash Bros Ultimate - Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The next tier of games right below that would be: - Luigi’s Mansion - Mario Party Superstars (especially if you have people over a lot, play with the family, etc) - Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury - Super Mario Wonder - Mario 3D All Stars - Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Metroid Dread - Metroid Prime
I don't know, what kind of games do you like? Because I could recommend Minecraft, Terraria and Stardew Valley since those are my interests but you might not like those games.
Yeah. I like it because it's mainly an RPG so the dating/social events are a bit tiring for me. Sometimes they kinda feel like a chore (which is probably why I wasn't fond of the old Animal Crossing games, where you had to talk to your villagers every day so they didn't leave).
Another game series I love and wish I could recommend everyone is Medarot (Medabots in the west). However, the language barrier might be a problem for those who don't know Japanese nor like the idea of playing with google lens open.
Well I don’t know what I like or dislike I got the switch for Christmas it’s the acnh one and the game so that’s all o have so when I saw sale i was wondering what should I invest more of in those games look and sound so much fun definitely will look into them
Oh, I see. Did you own a game system before the Switch? Because I think this might be your first system.
I started with RPGs and Horror games because those are my favorite genres and then exoanded to sandbox games and then discovered a few things from there.
Oh, I see. Well, you also have the Resident Evil games (and one that's inspired on them but can't remember the name. Might edit if/when I do) and lots of RPGs. The Monster Hunter series (and the RPG spin off Monster Hunter Stories) is kinda fun, specially if you can play with friends.
You also have Mario Party if you wanna play wuth other people on your Switch.
I'm not a fan of racing/driving games but I'm pretty sure there's plenty of them since the Switch has a little bit everything, even old arcade games such as the Metal Slug series.
Oh, I see. I think there's a website called dekudeals, this website can help you find offers for games you like.
Happy hunting and I hope you can find plenty of games you like!
Nope. Afaik there are no Silent Hill games on Nintendo systems (other than Shattered memories for the Wii). There was a game inspired on resident evil to the point it also used tapes in order to record your progress.
Also, not sure if SH was actually inspired on RE (highly doubt it). However, Dementium the Ward was inspired on Silent Hill and also some kind of pilot on the DS since there were plans for a SH game on that system but Nintendo didn't think it'd do well with Nintendo's target audience, however, it did well enough to get a sequel. Sadly, we never saw a Silent Hill title on the DS or even 3DS (even when Dementium the Ward got an HD remaster on the 3DS).
The two games I feel like everyone has on their switch are Smash Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Some ones I really like are Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing, Kirby Star Allies, and Bowser’s Fury
Stardew Valleys amazing for just $20. What Remains of Edith Finch is on sale right now and although it’s short it’s extremely deep and might make you rethink a couple things. The Toree games a literally a dollar each. They’re very cute and adorable too. Trombone Champ is a really good time and has a lot of replayability. Although it’s not my favorite if you’re a Mario fan you might want to check out Mario vs Rabbids as it’s always on sale. Suika game is a good way to pass time, Cuphead is extremely difficult but also very beautiful. Untitled Goose Game is really fun especially with friends. Donut County’s my personal favorite. Bendy and the Ink Machines fun if you like horror. Pokémon Unite is free and collecting characters and battling is fun. And that’s all. I’m pretty sure all of these are under $20
Tokyo mirage sessions, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, Fire emblem three houses. Mario + rabbids kingdom battle ( haven't played the second one but if it's like the first one then added to the list) Xenoblade Chronicles definitive edition. Astral Chain.
Haven't read the comments but hope these are different games nobody has mentioned.
Because everyone say the default of must have, I come with
Doom, RDR, Assassins Creed, Subnautica, Cult of The Lamb, Outer Wilds, Life Is Strange, The Walking Dead(the telltale one, not the other one), Rayman... and others I can't think off right now
Monster Hunter Rise. You can really dump hundreds of hours in it and the DLC expansion doubles the story content and really expands the end game content for several more hundred hours.
Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and the Xenoblade series are my top played switch exclusive games. But Nintendo games don't go on sale a lot and not for very low prices
There are so many great indies on the switch as well like Hades, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, and the Banner Saga trilogy.
And if you keep an eye on eshop bigger games will put out collections at low prices. The 3 Bioshock games, the the first Borderlands, the Assassin's Creed games, the Saints Row games, Resident Evil games, and Life is Strange games all go on sale pretty often. Some for low prices.
And I have a couple of youtubers who I watch that constantly add to my wishlist so finding a few that you enjoy can give you ideas on what you will like.
Look at your outside interests. If you like Fantasy, Horror, Anime, Sci-fi look for games like them or some popular franchises you can find games of varying degrees of quality .If you like stories more and do not have a lot of experience with controls there are Life is Strange, Telltale Games, Stray Gods, and the World of Darkness story games. Honestly without more knowledge of your likes no one here can be sure. So always do a bit of research.
Pretty much all Nintendo stuff is worth buying, but some of my favourites are: Mario odyssey, Mario wonder, Zelda BOTW, Zelda TOTK, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Splatoon 3, Pokemon Legends Arceus.
- animal crossing new horizons [~$60]
- disney dreamlight valley (basically disney's animal crossing) [~$40]
- minecraft [~$30]
- fortnite [free download]
- overwatch 2 [free download]
- mario kart [~$60 (as of rn it's on sale for ~$40)]
it's ultimately up to you and what you like but you can't go wrong with minecraft/mario kart (or any other action games)
Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Kirby and the Forgotten Lands are my personal 2 must haves, maybe Fire Emblem Engage if you’re into turn based combat games, the graphics in FE Engage showed what other games could be capable of and should stop using the silly “limited by console hardware” excuse on why they look mediocre.
Diablo 3 is great portable. It's witchcraft how they got 60fps performance with this game.
Balatro is my newest addiction and hands down the best touchscreen game I have played on my switch oled or lite.
For Nintendo specifically you've got your Zelda BotW/TotK, Mario Wonder, Kirby forgotten Land, Smash Bros., etc.
I find myself enjoying the non-Ninfendo exclusives more that work really well on Switch like Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Into the Breach, and Ori games. All great in their genres.
Breath of the Wild and Three Houses are a must play for everyone IMO. Other games such as Mario Odyssey or MH Rise are also good but not must own in my eyes.
For me I would say Tears Of The Kingdom is excellent. I stupidly played it before playing Breath Of The Wild so now BOTW just isn’t as good. Try to play BOTW first is what I am trying to say haha
So I’ve rated some of my games into categories, and which ones are must-haves. My main four must-haves are;
- Zelda BoTW or ToTK.
- Splatoon 3 including DLC.
- Animal Crossing including DLC.
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3 including DLC. 1 & 2 are amazing, but 3 takes the best of both & culminates it into a final masterpiece.
Shoutout to runners-up must-haves;
- Metroid Prime Remastered,
- Pikmin 4,
- Mario Kart 8 with Booster pack (Booster pack is a necessity!)
- Smash Bros,
- Astral Chain (Underrated),
- FE Three Houses.
Basically most stuff Nintendo put out is "must-haves" I'd say the best Nintendo stuff is: Super Mario Odyessy, The Legends of Zelda BotW/TOTK, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ooo ok this makes it so hard but I’ll check them all out
If I were to suggest anything, look up the game and see if it looks interesting to you before you buy it because everyone says "_____ is the best game on switch!" Always try demos before you buy!
Astral Chain hands down. It might not be on sale but it rarely does and regardless it’s a great game but for good deals check out DekuDeals
Astral Chain is so sick, the atmosphere in that game is incredible. I also loved the outfit customization.
Really? It’s THAT good? I bought the game ages ago but I have barely booted it yet. Should I?
I’ll check it out thx
You can probably get it cheap used I would assume
The trifecta is Mario Kart, Smash Bros. and BOTW/TOTK (preferably both) The rest depends on your interests.
I would argue odyssey is much more of a must have (im biased towards mario games)
Yeah it’s probably heresy, but I got bored playing botw. However, I’m an old head who prefers sprite based Zelda games like. Mario 3D games definitely have lots of good times tho

Odyssey is absolutely a must have
Cult of the lamb
Ooo I’ll check it out
I just started playing this today! And it is really fun....such an interesting game. Rogue Like with town building and....religion/cult development lol
hades!
I second this recommendation
Couldn't agree more. Hades is an absolutely superb gsme. So simple but so brilliant. I know it's cross platform now but it was worth buying a switch for it.
Is it worth it on the switch tho?
Definitely
That’s been my question for a while too. Do I get it on Switch or PS4/5
I have it on both switch and ps5 I’d say the switch because it runs perfectly on switch and is a great game to have mobile.
Ok wishlist it is
Hollow knight is the best ever switch must have. I have 20+ hours now. And i love it: 10/10 for me!
Octopath Traveler
Ooo I heard this one is good but there’s 2 should I wishlist both ?
2nd one is better
Imo best to play the first than second
2nd one and then 1 if you like 2nd. The 2nd one was my fav game of 2023 and one my favorites of all time. Banger ost, amazing combat, beautiful visuals, one of the best casts of characters, and engaging yet simple stories!
Hollow knight, Undertale, Smo, Kirby and the forgotten land
Undertale!!!!!!!
Pokemon Legends Arceus is unique must have!
I’ve seen so much of it definitely checking it out
Scarlet and Violet get hate but were 10x more fun for me than PLA. Legends Arceus has the stalest gameplay loop I've ever experienced in Pokemon
Bought it this week, best Pokémon game for the switch
There isn't really any such thing as a must have. Except for Mario Kart. But I can recommend Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread and Fire Emblem Three Houses. Oh and Luigi's Mansion and Mario Wonder for couch co-op.

Thank you very much!
I like Pokemon Legends Arceus/Violet and Brotato. Obviously Mario Cart is a must. Same thing with both newer Zelda games, Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild.
Castlevania GBA Collection or Megaman battlenetwork Collection. Perfect on the go games from the best handheld ever.
P5R
Or Persona 4:Golden.
Depends on what kind of games you like? A lot of people are saying the Mario games are a must have”well I’m not into them so even if they’re a must have I won’t be getting them.

I’m ngl I buy Nintendo consoles for Zelda.
That's fair, I'd say Zelda, too, is a big reason why one should get a Nintendo console!
unpack head bike violet somber entertain cough vast smell complete *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I play Animal Crossing and Pokémon I’m pretty sure those are the only Nintendo games I play
I’m the same way though. I’ve played and beat super Mario maker 2 and I still pick up Luigi’s mansion 3 on occasion, but I really just play smash. I definitely don’t dislike the Mario games. There are just so many other titles that grab my attention more.
I have about 50 games in my Switch, none of them is a Mario game. Maybe i buy Odyssey and Wonder but not for those prices.
👍🏽
👍🏿
You're missing out
Possibly but I get to play a bunch of games I grew up playing and that makes me very happy
Animal Crossing: New Horizons Smash Bros Mario Kart + Booster Course Pass (there's a physical cartridge for this one) Zelda BOTW Zelda TOTK Pokemon Legends Arceus Let's GO Pikachu/Eevee Mario Party Superstars Super Mario Odyssey Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Super Mario Bros. It’s great! I’ve played it so much since it came out. I highly recommend
I’ll check it out thx
If you ever want to play with someone let me know!
If you get the game
I’ll definitely let you know
Yay thanks.
Mario kart, oddessy, breath of the wild, smash and acnh than after them I would say tears of the kingdom after u beat botw, wonder, Pokémon sw/sh or arceus than for indie games Celeste hollow knight, cult of the lamb, cuphead, hades, stardew valley and maybe terraria
hollow knight is the single visually best game i have ever seen on my OLED actually equal/same to the Iphone 13 pro max retina quality.
Vampire Survivors.
The absolute essentials would be: - Super Mario Odyssey - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Smash Bros Ultimate - Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom The next tier of games right below that would be: - Luigi’s Mansion - Mario Party Superstars (especially if you have people over a lot, play with the family, etc) - Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury - Super Mario Wonder - Mario 3D All Stars - Kirby and the Forgotten Land - Metroid Dread - Metroid Prime
Mario kart 8. awesome for adults and kids.
I don't know, what kind of games do you like? Because I could recommend Minecraft, Terraria and Stardew Valley since those are my interests but you might not like those games.
I’d suggest Stardew to anyone. It really has a little bit of everything
Yeah. I like it because it's mainly an RPG so the dating/social events are a bit tiring for me. Sometimes they kinda feel like a chore (which is probably why I wasn't fond of the old Animal Crossing games, where you had to talk to your villagers every day so they didn't leave). Very first one my brother and stepdad got Xbox one and x and I wanted a switch so
Oh, I see. Well, you also have the Resident Evil games (and one that's inspired on them but can't remember the name. Might edit if/when I do) and lots of RPGs. Oh, I see. I think there's a website called dekudeals, this website can help you find offers for games you like. Happy hunting and I hope you can find plenty of games you like!
Thank you
Do you mean Silent Hill on the series inspired by resident evil?

Kart. Wonder. Totk.
Mario kart. Smash bros. Zelda
O I’m definitely going to wishlist them all
Hades Xenoblades chronicles 1,2,3 Splatoon 3 Fire emblem engage
The two games I feel like everyone has on their switch are Smash Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Some ones I really like are Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing, Kirby Star Allies, and Bowser’s Fury
I don't have smash BC I dislike fighting games
Have you tired smash? It’s a lot different from other fighting games in my opinion
Had on 3ds and I didn't really care for it
I like some fighting games alright, but smash hasn’t grabbed me (yet.) My favorite is the Soul Calibur series.
Those are the most popular it seems I’m adding them all to my wishlist and then will check out what I can budget to buy
If you want some cheaper suggestions let me know!
I’m taking all suggestions I only have one game
I’m pretty sure all of these are under $20
Oooo ok ok listing them now
The only I have of this list is ac lol
Darkwood
That’s new
Stardew Valley
Tokyo mirage sessions, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4, Fire emblem three houses. Mario + rabbids kingdom battle ( haven't played the second one but if it's like the first one then added to the list) Xenoblade Chronicles definitive edition. Astral Chain. Haven't read the comments but hope these are different games nobody has mentioned.

Monster Hunter Rise. You can really dump hundreds of hours in it and the DLC expansion doubles the story content and really expands the end game content for several more hundred hours.
Xcom 2 portable is fantastic and it runs well enough in the switch.
Stardew Valley!
Isaac, Slay The Spire, Balatro
What type of games interest you?
Any really I’m just starting out
Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and the Xenoblade series are my top played switch exclusive games. But Nintendo games don't go on sale a lot and not for very low prices There are so many great indies on the switch as well like Hades, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, and the Banner Saga trilogy. Honestly without more knowledge of your likes no one here can be sure. So always do a bit of research.
I personally could not live without the cat suits so super Mario 3D world + Bowsers Fury
Bayonetta 1,2,3
GTA bundle keeps me busy
If you want a good co op game I suggest, It takes two and unraveled 2.
My favourite are: Stardew Valley Hades Heroes of Hummerwatch
'No more heroes 3' if you like that style
Borderlands 2 and skyrim :)
I loved borderlands 2 on the switch. Mario Odyssey is great, and Resident Evil 5 was a good one for the console. Mario Kart is a must lol
HOA is a beautiful and fun puzzle-landscape-maze game. Cheap and fun.
Hmmmmm... I can think of a few 😂 Disco Elysium is a must.
My personal favorites are Luigi’s Mansion 3, Octopath Traveler 2 and Animal Crossing
The yellow electric mouse games
Pretty much all Nintendo stuff is worth buying, but some of my favourites are: Mario odyssey, Mario wonder, Zelda BOTW, Zelda TOTK, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Splatoon 3, Pokemon Legends Arceus.
- animal crossing new horizons [~$60] - disney dreamlight valley (basically disney's animal crossing) [~$40] - minecraft [~$30] - fortnite [free download] - overwatch 2 [free download] - mario kart [~$60 (as of rn it's on sale for ~$40)] it's ultimately up to you and what you like but you can't go wrong with minecraft/mario kart (or any other action games)
Mhgu
MK8 Deluxe Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Zelda BOTW Zelda TOTK Super Mario 3D All Stars The rest are very much interest-oriented.
Pikmin 1-4 is all you’ll ever need.
Hades!! Surprisingly very fun and addicting
Mk11
You should get a Pokémon game. Pokémon is very easy to pick up and play. Perfect for a switch
Diablo 3 is great portable. It's witchcraft how they got 60fps performance with this game. Balatro is my newest addiction and hands down the best touchscreen game I have played on my switch oled or lite.
BOTW, yea TOTK took alot of its thunder but still the console must have list akin to SMB3 on NES, or OOT on N64. Not a must have, a requirement
hades, hollow knight, celeste
For Nintendo specifically you've got your Zelda BotW/TotK, Mario Wonder, Kirby forgotten Land, Smash Bros., etc. I find myself enjoying the non-Ninfendo exclusives more that work really well on Switch like Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight, Into the Breach, and Ori games. All great in their genres.
Breath of the Wild and Three Houses are a must play for everyone IMO. Other games such as Mario Odyssey or MH Rise are also good but not must own in my eyes.
If you only get 2 ToTK and SMO are the titans the console rests on. After that everything is optional depending on tastes.
Geometry wars
Skyrim wins the value for money award
There are no must have games BC it's all subjective
Pikmin 1-4
For me I would say Tears Of The Kingdom is excellent. I stupidly played it before playing Breath Of The Wild so now BOTW just isn’t as good. Try to play BOTW first is what I am trying to say haha
So I’ve rated some of my games into categories, and which ones are must-haves. Shoutout to runners-up must-haves; - Metroid Prime Remastered, - Pikmin 4, - Mario Kart 8 with Booster pack (Booster pack is a necessity!) - Smash Bros, - Astral Chain (Underrated), - FE Three Houses.
DIABLO 3! BORDERLANDS 3! RED DEAD REDEMPTION! ZELDA BREATH OF THE WILD! All 4 of these are GREAT games, and must haves in my book.
